Following the death of my mother-in-law, we ended up with a third bedroom that is no longer being used.

As a result, I’ve spent considerable time the last several weeks converting the space into my first ever Man Cave.

It will officially be done later today when my Amazon delivery gets here.

I think I’m really going to enjoy this little space. Pics to come later. 😎

I guess the 2nd bedroom in my apartment has effectively been that for a while. Computer, office filing cabinet, 2-3 bookcases of books (Sci-Fi, Naval History, RPG games). And a closet of boxes with board games in them. (Though a bunch of those are in another closet now.)

Part of the space is the cat’s. Her cat tree by the window. Toy box in the closet and a scattering of other things.

All of a sudden, the GOP is kissing the ass of Jeff Bezos because of one anti-Biden tweet.

This would be the same GOP that regularly rails against the evils of “big tech”.

When I looked at the trending tweets it seemed about every third one mentioned Milton Friedman. Those guys.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKRC) - A new Gallup poll found that a record-low number of US adults are extremely proud to be American.

It shows just 38% say they are “extremely proud” to be American and 27% say they are “very proud,” for a total of 65% of adults expressing pride in the nation.

The amount of Americans who feel extremely proud is at a historical low, down from 42% in 2020. However, the 65% who expressed pride is up two points from its lowest rate, which was also recorded in 2020.

Another 22% in the most recent poll say they are “moderately proud” and 9% are “only a little proud,” while 4% are “not at all” proud.

According to the poll, extreme national pride has been trending downward since 2015, before which, the lowest rate was 55% in 2001.

The Women Who Leave Anti-Abortion Picket Lines to Get Abortions

“…A few days before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last month, a woman who described herself as an anti-abortion activist showed up in the waiting room of Dr. Marissa Lapedis, a family-medicine doctor who performs the procedure in Atlanta.

But she wasn’t there to protest—she had an appointment.

“She talked about being in marches, and said she had spent a lot of time volunteering in crisis pregnancy centers—you know, showing patients the ultrasound image and explaining what happens,” Lapedis, a fellow with the group Physicians for Reproductive Health, told The Daily Beast. “She said she had been anti-abortion her whole life, and that her whole family was like her—and yet she was so appreciative of the care she received from us. She literally was like, ‘I’m so grateful that I’m able to make this choice for myself.’”

More on the Newsom pardons:

Kruzan was among nearly three dozen people granted pardons and clemencies by the governor this week, a list that included 82-year-old Henry Pachnowski, who was born to Polish parents who were later imprisoned in Nazi labor camps in World War II.
*snip*

Newsom also pardoned Pachnowski, who now lives in Maryland. He pleaded guilty in 1967 in Orange County to a misdemeanor charge of soliciting a lewd act and was sentenced to 10 days in jail and three years of probation.

In his pardon application, Pachnowski said he was having consensual “intimacy” with another man in a car in a deserted industrial area when they were caught by a security guard who “said we had gone against God and nature.”

He said he pleaded guilty to avoid prosecution on a more serious charge of “sex perversion.”

You sometimes see that. A news presenter interviewing a woman who just saved three drowning children: “People around town are praising your heroic act,” with a response like “I just did what needed to be done. I wasn’t really thinking about it.”

In which case you wouldn’t be extremely proud.

Perfection is stagnation. You can be proud of it and still want more improvement. The pride can be rooted in the ability of the people to make improvements.

re: #83 jaunte

That whole article. Wow.

Abortion providers across the country are reeling from the fall of Roe, and some face the prospect of legal reprisal from law enforcement in their own state or even other states where patients need help. Almost inevitably, they are reflecting on the many patients they’ve seen who came in for a service they claimed to fervently oppose—and in some cases actively protested against.

“All of us who do abortions see patients quite regularly who tell us, ‘I’m not pro-choice, but I just can’t continue this pregnancy,’” said Dr. Sarah Prager, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Washington. “We’ve even seen people coming into the clinic off the protester lines to get their abortion, then return to protesting outside the clinic.” And to be clear, she added, “These are not people who turn anti-choice after having an abortion, but who simply access this essential service when they need it in spite of their personal beliefs about abortion in general.”

According to Prager, the phenomenon is so common that abortion providers have a name for it: the Me Exception.

”We in the movement often say people believe abortion should be legal in cases of rape, incest and ‘me,’ meaning whatever reason is relevant for that person,” she said. And yet, she noted, of the many surveys describing how Americans view abortion, virtually none reflect that reality.

I have a question for those who are coin collectors. Amazon has rolls of new dollars that feature American Innovations. The one for my home state of PA is the polio vaccine which was developed by Jonas Salk at the University of Pittsburgh. Do you think it is worth it to get one roll?

en.wikipedia.org

The American Innovation Dollar is a United States Mint issue, running from 2018 to 2032. They are not being released into circulation, though they are legal tender. They are being released in bags or rolls.

The United States Mint does not profit from the coins; as a reseller, Amazon does. You can buy them directly from the Mint.

My estimation that this would be over by the end of September if not earlier may not be exactly right. I still think anyone that believes:

A. The Russians will “win”… something
2. This will last years.
D. That the Russians will then have the ability to go after parts or all of the rest of Europe

Is drinking Draino.

The only reason they haven’t completely collapsed yet is their one master ability: The ability to puff out their chests and unleash a tsunami of bullshit. Eventually the reality of this will overcome the tidal wave of bullshit coming from the Kremlin and their assets in Russia media and around the world. The longer it takes, the worse it will be for Russia.

With HIPAA potentially on the block now that Roe is gone, it might become legal (along with a whole host of other privacy-related issues, such as searching your credit card information). That said, ethical physicians wouldn’t do it anyway. On the other hand, Fascist Party states may compel physicians or insurance companies to turn over your information (Florida already tried that a few years ago on women seeking child support and publishing names of the hoors in the newspaper).

From the Pro-Choice Action Network above, there are stories of physicians outright refusing to treat such a person. No abortion provider has ever been sued for not providing an abortion, and physicians note such people tend not to do the necessary follow-up care.

Conservatives are not hypocrites. The idea “I get something and you don’t” is the basis of the exercise of power over others. This is why a conservative does not suffer cognitive dissonance about what is seeming hypocrisy when observed by a liberal.

And the first case of Republicans being allowed to deny election results has been handed down, in favour of fascism.

What The Hell Is Happening In Wisconsin? (Wonkette)

Not to be outdone by the US Supreme Court, the Wisconsin Supreme Court is, once again, back on its shit.

This week, the Wisconsin high court ruled 4-3 that Republican political appointees can refuse to leave and hold their offices for as long as they want, at least until a Republican is elected governor.

Yes, quite literally. The outcome in Wisconsin v. Prehn is a rule that will only benefit the justices’ fellow Republicans.

In 2015, Scott Walker appointed Frederick Prehn (who owns a gun shop, because of course he does) to the state Natural Resources Board. Board members serve staggered six-year terms, and Prehn’s term was up in 2021. Prehn, however, just decided he was going to stay in his seat, because fuck you is why. And since the Republican state Senate refused to confirm any of the Democratic governor’s appointees in his place, the state supreme court let him.

re: #136 A hollow voice says Vaccinate the world!

Yes, as noted by “A hollow voice says Vaccinate the world!” above, some libraries provide online charging out of electronic books. Additionally I think that Amazon Prime users can sign up for a 90 day trial of Audible. One just has to remember to cancel before the end of the trial period.

There are indeed some excellent books on the Battle of Gettysburg and the Civil War as a whole.

However, one thing that I have noticed is that the Southern pro-Confederate crowd has much greater interest in the time period than the rest of the nation. And many authors write to that audience.

Years ago, I worked with a guy who did a lot of Civil War re-enacting. The re-enacting was also far popular with the Confederate side of things. For example at a Gettysburg re-enactment, as a Union re-enactor you could sign up the day of the reenactment. But the Confederate side was filled almost a year in advance.

I went to one of the historical e-enactments he was participating in. The final part of the historical battle involved the outnumbered Confederates withdrawing from the battlefield being pursued by the much larger Union forces.

The finale of the re-enactment involved close to 1000 Confederate re-enactors retreating from, perhaps, 200 Union re-enactors. As the narrator described the vastly outnumbered Confederate “forced withdrawal”.

The Supreme Court Tells the 21st Century to Go Fuck Itself
rudepundit.blogspot.com

This session, the newly-ripened conservative supermajority of the Supreme Court of the United States decided it was time to lift up their robes and piss on the 21st century and reality. The half-dozen justices, John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, looked out at a nation, no, a world that demands progress, that demands care, that demands a government that can act to help people, and said, “Nah. Fuck that.” And their reasoning essentially came down to, in every case, “Because we can.”

Yes!

Meade had just been appointed head of the Army of the Potomac a couple of days before. The rest of his former Corps Commanders in that shark tank were already thinking of ways to get rid of him so they could get the promotion. His intention was likely just to remain on the current fortified lines in Maryland.

Buford basically made the decision that the Union Army would fight at Gettysburg. And Reynolds backed him up.

A couple of years ago I heard an NPR-related program by a white reporter and Black reporter visiting Jefferson Davis’ home where they still hold re-enactments. They compared their experiences. It was a classic of the “lost cause” narrative that JD himself pioneered. Great discomfort at the questions posed by the Black reporter (even though there are lots of school field trips that always have large numbers of young Black students).

Cheryl Rofer, via Lawyers Guns & Money:
The Pandemic Is Not Over

“…Alongside one of the January 6 hearings, the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis, chaired by Representative James Clyburn, released a report, “The Atlas Dogma: The Trump Administration’s Embrace of a Dangerous and Discredited Herd Immunity Via Mass Infection Strategy.” It is based on interviews with Deborah Birx, Brett Giroir, and Robert Redfield, all of whom served in public health during the Donald Trump administration, and none of whom distinguished themselves as a public servant during that time. The report tells us that Scott Atlas, who was worse, began influencing the adminstration earlier than has been publicly known. He was brought in by Jared Kushner.”

“…As long as we keep the transmission up, we are all more endangered. The best way to slow it down would be with general masking, but apparently that’s not going to fly. We really do need more attention to improving ventilation in schools and other public places, and we need paid sick leave. (New Mexico’s law just went into effect!) But Congress and the Republican courts aren’t having it. They’re done with the pandemic.”

One thing that surprised me, when I realized it, about Pickett’s charge was that the 13,000 soldiers that Lee sent into the attack were just about every effective soldier he had left. I believe that he kept one division as a reserve, but that was all that he had left.

He did have probably an equivalent number or more of other remaining soldiers, but after three days of heavy fighting, they were exhausted, disorganized, unenthusiastic, and out of supplies.

Likewise, I’ll have no business with the yahoos that say the Army of the Potomac should have gone chasing after the Confederates on July 4. War is hell. People don’t understand what a brutally physical conflict the Civil War was. Pickett’s Charge was, in fact, an actual charge - a dead run, under fire - and was met by a counter-charge with bayonets that degraded into a general brawl with swords, knives, and pistols. On July 4, nobody was in any condition to do any chasing. Meade had his victory, and his orders - protect DC - and he was between Lee and the capital. He had no reason to go anywhere.

Interesting. My deep rural Georgia grandfather liked whiskey but swore it off. Except for Christmas when they would make “syllabub” (sp?). It was a drink made with cream and sugar and usually wine. But my grandparents used bourbon. We usually went in the summer to visit, but once went for Christmas when I was in 8th grade. I was stoked about breaking the boredom with syllabub.

I adore Civil War history, so of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the heroics of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. On July 2, General Winfield Scott Hancock had a problem to deal with: Daniel Sickles had led his corps out of position, and it got badly mauled. The Southerners were approaching the center of the line, with a nice big hole in it. He turned to Colonel William Colvill for help, and he, in turn, led his 262 men into the face of two brigades totaling nearly 10 times their number. They lost 215 men killed or wounded, the highest casualty percentage (82%) of any American military unit before or since; but they weren’t done. The next day, reconstituted with two detached companies elsewhere, they earned a Medal of Honor when they again charged into the advancing Confederate line and took the colors of the 28th Virginia. The colors of the 1st Minnesota hang in our state capitol; the colors of the 28th Virginia are in the basement of our state archives. Virginia has asked for them back several times over the last 160 years. We told them - politely, as we are Minnesotan - to get fucked.

re: #146 A hollow voice says Vaccinate the world!

“Just” a novel? Sir, you need to rethink that.

Having read both Longstreet’s and Chamberlain’s own writings on the battle I did not particularly care about Shaara doing first person “internal thought” sections of their point of view. I thought he was making assumptions and stretches on what they wrote later as part of the narrative Shaara was building as a novel.

Thus my preference for a novelist’s presentation of the events being Shelby Foote’s.

I agree with you, the Gettysburg Campaign destroyed the Army of Northern Virginia as a strategic force.

I agree that both armies were in a shambles after Gettysburg. And that Lincoln, remembering the dithering of McClellan, was pressing Meade hard to pursue aggressively in the hopes of destroying Lee’s Army..

Interestingly, I believe that the claim that the US Cavalry didn’t aggressively pursue Lee’s retreating army after Gettysburg is a canard against their good name and faithful service. The US Cavalry captured thousands of Confederates in the pursuit despite terrible weather and Lee’s use of multiple different axis of retreat.

The weather delayed the cavalry several days from figuring out which route Lee took and which Potomac River crossing he had selected. By the time the cavalry caught up, Lee, an Engineer, had dug in and heavily fortified a ridgeline at his selected crossing.

Infantry, in large numbers would be needed to attack that. With expected heavy casualties. By the time the Union Army could disentangle things and start to bring up the infantry, Lee had withdrawn into Virginia.

The Union Army followed but the resulting pursuit and the Mine Run Campaign showed the Army was badly under-performing and needed a rest, refit and re-organization.

I found this book an interesting one on the subject:

I get the same with my Smart. If I wasn’t already married, I would have a lot of dating opportunities. My wife gets the same from men when she drives.

I know I shouldn’t say this, but I feel certain there will be a Tucker reference in the Copenhagen shooter’s social media.

re: #175 William Lewis

Oh, neat. I should budget this in. I like carrying a pocket watch but get nervous sometimes about carrying my Great Grandfather’s watch. This would be far less of a problem if something happened and it’s pretty & neat too. smile.amazon.com

I prefer pocket watches over wrist watches due to practicality: My tiny wrists, and catching the watch on everything.

I’ll have to ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer (my wife) if there’s money for this.

re: #174 Dopamine Fish
