Somebody posted something about the Ritchie Boys the other day; it was tonightā€™s 60 Minutes story.

At the end of the episode, they named some of the Ritchie Boys who went on to be super-famous for various later achievements, and I discovered that one of them was the father of a guy I went to college with.

What happened to the days when Civil Rights activists went to jail by the thousands to defy racist laws? Why arenā€™t we seeing mass civil disobedience when reproductive rights are eviscerated? What will happen when SCOTUS decimates marriage equality?

Suburban liberal white people have been trained that actually standing up to fight oppression, to break unjust laws, inconveniencing our fanatical neighbors will strengthen the authoritarian crackdowns in response. Unlike the knuckledragging insurrectionists, too many of us donā€™t have the courage or fortitude to even cosplay pledging ā€œour lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honorā€ to the cause. Too many of us want to cling to respectability, decorum, and ā€œmiddle class morality.ā€

Same with me. (I count encouraging people in my village to vote for me for village board. /s)

Iā€™ve donated to state senator Carol Bloodā€™s (D) campaign for governor here against Jim Pillen (R-State Board of Regents). Sen. Blood has added righteous outrage to her campaign over Roe.

Republicans here are busy attacking Pillen as being insufficiently loyal for not backing Charles W. Herbster (R-sex pest) and threatening to not vote (letā€™s hope). A bunch of people are claiming they will write in Herbster anyway.

Yes, she supports open borders with Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, and Colorado. Maybe Tammy bunch-of-numbers should buy a map.

Carol Blood tweets out pictures of people with her campaign signs in their yards. I have a sign on the way in the US Mail, so perhaps I can send her a photograph to her campaign E-mail.

Supreme Court rejects Christian hate groupā€™s case over ā€˜hate groupā€™ label (Hemant Mehta at Only Sky)

If you guessed Clarence Thomas was the only justice to buy the churchā€™s argument, please collect your Kewpie doll.

A request by a Christian hate group asking the Supreme Court for help in getting people to stop calling it a ā€œhate groupā€ has finally ended in failure. The Court said on Monday that it would not take up the case, with only Clarence Thomas dissenting.

Itā€™s the latest and final twist in a pointless battle that was fought by Coral Ridge Ministries (formerly called Truth in Action and also known as D. James Kennedy Ministries) after they were included in the Southern Poverty Law Centerā€™s 2010 list of ā€œActive Anti-LGBT Hate Groups.ā€ (Kennedy himself died in 2007.)

The ministry said in its initial 2017 lawsuit that being put on the SPLCā€™s list hurt them financially because Amazon (also a defendant) refused to allow them to fundraise via AmazonSmile precisely because theyā€™re considered a ā€œhate group.ā€ GuideStar (also a defendant) temporarily labeled SPLC hate groups as such on their website, and the ministry said that also hurt fundraising.

Iā€™m on call, but I sneaked off to see my mother this afternoon. She was asleep, so Iā€™ll try again tomorrow. As I was driving back, I saw a campaign sign for Rusty Bowers, who you all might remember as the current speaker of the AZ House, who refused to give in to Trumpian pressure. Well, just to the right of his sign was a smaller sign with the letters RINO and pointing to the Bowers sign.

Rusty Bowers is no hero, but dayum.

CHORLEY, England ā€” It is a perilous time for fish and chips, the golden fried food for the masses, celebrated as Britainā€™s ā€œfavorite mealā€ and ā€œthe national dish.ā€

As it turns out, a lot of that fish comes from Russian trawlers and the sunflower oil from Ukrainian fields.

With Russiaā€™s war raging in Ukraine, that means skyrocketing prices for hungry Brits. The ingredients for an order of fish and chips ā€” by design cheap and caloric ā€” now cost more than twice as much as at the start of the year.

Sounds like the Great Plains storm did not get you, so a band of religious locusts was sent next.

It was sounding like a war zone the next block over. But, shortly after what sounded like a multiple alarm fire department response, the war seems to have abated. I guess Iā€™ll find out what happened at some point.

My favorite was the guy in the cul de sac who showed his new neighbor how he would shoot off fireworks from his garage and as soon as he saw the county police squad car looking for the source he would simply shut the garage door.

His new neighbor was a lieutenant in the county police. (Made him soak all the remaining fireworks in a bucket of water. )

He may be demented now, but that wasnā€™t what they were wanting then, rather the fact that he was incompetent and would do what he was told to do. I still say the Anita Hill situation was caused by the RNC so that it would devolve into shouting about that so that no one would look too closely at what an utter incompetent he was.

Looks like I wasnā€™t the only one to notice that maybe the Secret Service knew about tfgā€™s plan to invade the Capitol prior to January 6th. (Ornato was a Secret Service leader who left to become an aide to tfg.)

In a hierarchical organization, there are limits to agent initiative. And a decision to move a President someplace against his wishes sounds like something that would need to be decided very high in an organization.

If the organization could, and did, do it to tfg, why not Pence too?

re: #124 ckkatz

I agree

Which was, I suspect, why they declined to participate and dragged the kicking and screaming tfg back to the White House.

I do find it interesting that they figured it out so quickly. Or maybe, they had an idea on what was coming down and decided earlier?

You will never get him removed for being demented, and any attempt to do so is as stupid as one can imagine.

I seem to recall that Pence was absolutely dead set against leaving the Capitol. Somewhere in what passes for his brain, he realized that if he left, it could be Bad or Very Bad. Bad in the sense that he was kept from doing one of his few real duties. Very Bad in that guys with loyalty to tfg could have decided to end him.

Well, you can sit down at a lunch counter and order a hamburger, you can climb onto a bus and sit in the ā€œwrongā€ seat, you can crowd into the registrarā€™s office and try to register to vote, but itā€™s hard to see how masses of people can go into clinics and demand abortions if theyā€™re not pregnant.

The marches are happening. Getting abortions for women in the fascist states is in the works (but you wonā€™t hear much about it if youā€™re not directly involved).

It took a while for the civil rights movement to gear up (how many decades depends on when you start counting), and it hasnā€™t even been two weeks since the SCOTUS decision came down. But actions against this have already started and they wonā€™t stop.

In 2014, when Russia invaded Ukraine, they took Donetsk and Luhansk provinces. They also took the Crimean Peninsula. Since the February 2022 invasion, in need of infantry, Russia has been press ganging Luhansk and Donetsk males into their army. Now the Russians are starting to press gang Crimeans into the military as well:

Also, the Russians built a bridge from the Russian mainland to the Crimean Peninsula. Earlier in the week, somebody decided to test out the smoke screen machinery which is intended to prevent the bridge from being attacked. But nobody thought to mention it to people driving on the bridge. It went over about as well as could be expected:

The XXI Amendment did precisely what the Dobbs decision did: Tossed alcohol prohibition back to the states. Thatā€™s why nearly 10% of Americans still live in so-called dry counties.

Slowly, and without very much attention by Americans, the third European-started world war slowly picks up speed.

I cannot imagine Putin backing down.

He might surprise me, of course. But I give odds of Putin backing down at less than 100:1 .

The day is going to come when Putin has to call up more men to fight.

If Ukraine continues to rearm with other nationsā€™ supplies, to the point where Ukraine can slowly regain territory lost to Russia, then Putin will need to up his forces.

Americans care more about gasoline prices (though historically not out of line with other gasoline peaks) than resolve against Putin and Putinism.

Indeed, the Trump contingent of the US is fully onboard the Putin train.

re: #73 ckkatz

And this is what I mean. Putin will try to get anyone to fight for him.

Russia can continue this for years.

All that propaganda that claims Russia is doomed because of American monetary pressure seems to have vanished. We were warned last week that the imminent default of Russia on millions of dollars of loans was going to be a big thing.

Well, that deadline came and went and it doesnā€™t seem to have affected this war.

This may have been missed over the long weekend, but the FBI added a woman to the most wanted list. Her name is Ruja Ignatova, and she was part of, maybe a key part of, a crypto Ponzi scheme.

New YorkA German citizen accused of defrauding investors out of $4 billion by selling a fake cryptocurrency called OneCoin has been added to the FBIā€™s list of its ten most-wanted fugitives, US officials said on Thursday.

Ruja Ignatova, also known as ā€œCryptoqueen,ā€ was charged in 2019 with eight counts including wire fraud and securities fraud for running the Bulgaria-based OneCoin Ltd as a pyramid scheme. Prosecutors say the company offered commissions for members to entice others to buy a worthless cryptocurrency.

ā€œShe timed her scheme perfectly, capitalizing on the frenzied speculation of the early days of cryptocurrency,ā€ said Damian Williams, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan.

Williams described OneCoin as ā€œone of the largest Ponzi schemes in history.ā€

cnn.com

Ignatova went to ground in 2017 and has not been seen since. Itā€™s entirely possible she has had plastic surgery or has surfaced elsewhere under another name. For all we know, she could be in Dubai, where there is no extradition treaty. The BBC did a podcast about her in 2019-2020. Hereā€™s a link: bbc.co.uk

This is the kind of thing that can make this war spread:

If the Georgians who want to join the EU win out and Georgia becomes closely aligned with the EU, then I can see Russia becoming increasingly aggressive in trying to tamp down ant-Russian movement all around their borders.

This is beginning to rhyme with the early 1900ā€™s, where oppressed groups around Europe were jostling for a new order, that didnā€™t erupt into outright war until the Austro-Hungarian empire decided to go for full warfare.

Sorry. It was not my intent to retraumatize anyone. Up here we have fog and snow squalls that can suddenly destroy visibility. With the additional twist that a sudden snow squall can destroy traction and hide any lane markings as well.

Growing up in Pittsburgh, I heard a lot of stories about how the pollution would get so bad that even in mid-day folks had to stop and look for the lane markings.

My grandfather told of driving through Pittsburgh in the 1920ā€™s he said that you could detect it from a very long distance off. By a black cloud of pollution that hung over the city.

When I was growing up in the 1960ā€™s much of the particulate pollution was eliminated by electric scrubbers on the smoke stacks. But the mills would fire up before dawn. And at dawn there was often a grayish yellowish cloud hanging on the ground. It was always referred to as ā€œGround Fogā€. But natural fog did not have a strong sulfur smell to it.

What would you do if you checked your bank account and found you had mistakenly been paid 300 times your normal salary?

Well, one employee who discovered he had been paid nearly Ā£150,000 for a monthā€™s work instead of the usual Ā£450 decided to duck and run.

The unnamed staff member at Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos in Chile did initially raise the eye-watering overpayment for May with his manager who then flagged it to HR.

He agreed to return the cash and promised to go to the bank the following day. But instead of giving it back, the man withdrew it and hasnā€™t been seen since.

One of the lessons we should draw from WWI is that ineptitude is no reason to stop fighting a war.

I fully expect Russia to continue to be of pretty low quality when it comes to actual war-fighting. Their inability to properly train and outfit their military will not stop them.

Thatā€™s why I think the current war is just one part of a very long struggle.

Note that Russia had already successfully invaded Ukraine several years ago and took territory.

This time around all Russia has to do is just keep on fighting.

It does not matter to the likes of Putin how many die for the motherland.

Why, in the big picture, do regional crises coalesce into a big war? Who can tell if something in, say, Syria may ripple all the way up to the Russian leadersā€™ actions?

Currently there are all sorts of atrocities that are happening, but they are small enough that here in the US we donā€™t pay them notice.

Notice we donā€™t even pay attention to what Saudi Arabia is doing in Yemen. It simply gets pushed off the pages of our news.

All sorts of hot spots around the world contain potential for war to spread.

94
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jul 3, 2022 • 11:10:28pm

The more I see that outlets like Fox News and their less successful, even-more-crazy kin (like OAN, Newsmax, etc.) try to push that the most important stories are high gasoline prices and men-in-drag, the more I am convinced that said outlets are doing propaganda.

Drag queens are irrelevant to 99.99% of the lives of Americans.

Gasoline prices are no higher than at prior high-spots of gasoline pricing and since today more Americans than ever have electric or hybrid vehicles or have cars with better gas-mileage, high gasoline prices are not going to be as impactful.

Itā€™s pretty clear that petroleum (and products), and food products, are experiencing price pressures due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

So when talking heads want to make Americans more antsy about said prices, I do wonder if the goal is to make the US give up its pressure on Russia.

I am finding my food prices go up significantly. I donā€™t like it but I am not blaming Biden for it because I know that the global pressure on prices is due to a plethora of issues that cannot be controlled by any American politician.

But of course there are plenty of Americans who are looking for a scapegoat.

Defund the police looking more and more like a good idea.

The GOP tried to pass a bullshyte law prohibiting municipalities and counties from ā€œdefundingā€ (in the bill reducing the budget of) the police. The bill was laughed out of committee when it was pointed out two-thirds of Nebraska municipalities have no police at all, and there is no massive crime wave.

One of my wifeā€™s superiors at Digital Equipment Corporation, a single woman and vice-president, was denied a Discover credit card in Colorado Springs because ā€œshe did not make enough money.ā€ That was in 1992.

According to my wife, the vice-president specifically applied for the card because a number of women at Digital had all been denied Discover cards for the same reason.

She says they put the vice president up to it was to see if ā€œinsufficient incomeā€ was actually the reason, as there were men in the company who made less than the women denied. The vice-presidentā€™s income was in the hundred thousands range, and Discover turned her down as well.

She says she didnā€™t know how it turned out as she left Digital before the issue was concluded with the women.

Question: Can American democracy be saved?

Answer: That depends on whether enough Americans want to save it and are willing to come out to vote in November.

Getting people out in record numbers again is important, but we also have to make sure those votes get tallied, registered and certified.

The GOP made the mistake of relying on state election officials who still had a few shreds of decency and who put the law above their party.

They have replaced all those people this time around with loyal party hacks.

Not all of them. Trumpā€™s designated election stealers lost in the GOP primary in Georgia for Governor and Secretary of State. The courts will have something to say about GOP election officials refusing to certify elections, for example the County Commission in New Mexico which was threatened with criminal prosecution if they didnā€™t certify the primary results.

One hopes there will be enough GOP politicians in power in 2024-25 who understand that if they try to steal the presidency it could result in civil war. In fact if Biden is reelected based on the actual vote count, I would urge him to refuse to step down if state legislatures try to steal the election from him.

I am sure that the GOP have it a lot more thoroughly planned for next time around: they will even throw out a state or two that the GOP wins to make it look ā€œbalancedā€, the overall goal of course being to refuse to certify enough results to deny either candidate an EC majority so they can then send things into Electoral Chaos.

Throwing out any election would be dangerous for a legislature.

There were old-school credit cards who actually expected you to pay back your credit card debt.

Nowadays, they want to get you hooked in with interest and fees so that you can never pay it back, you are just forking over a monthly minimum to keep your card active.

Even if you default, they are not losing money on you, they just lose out on the interest and fees (which were exorbitant to begin with)

New Scientist: What overturning Roe v Wade means for life-saving abortion exemptions

New laws that ban abortion in US states include exceptions for when the life of the parent is as risk. However, evidence from Texas suggests that clinicians will wait until the person is ā€œon deathā€™s doorā€ before performing the procedure for fear of legal repercussions

New state laws banning abortion in the US include exemptions that allow doctors to end pregnancies ā€œto save the life of the motherā€. But in practice the vague nature of these exemptions could endanger patientsā€™ lives and open up medical care providers to lawsuits and criminal charges.

[rant]But yeah, ā€œitā€™s just a tweet, itā€™s not a reliable sourceā€ when I show any of the tweets that are beginning to appear due to the situation. ā€ Theyā€™re just being mean and hystericalā€, ā€œYouā€™re using _________ as a pawn to get free legal abortion at any timeā€ when I try to raise the issue otherwise. You know the drill.

Like, the Grim damn Reaper *nods to G.R.* is in the room with the woman and the ObGyn staff because of the time consumed before the requirements in these laws for a procedure are fulfilled, or by the time a permission to perform the procedure comes back. For situations which in the worst case may have single-digit minutes or even less than a minute to make a decision.

Like, itā€™s a choice between the ObGyn staff going ā€œfuck waiting for the exemption to be legal, weā€™re gonna save a lifeā€ and getting charged with felonies, or the woman more than likely ending up permanent injured or dead.

Like, I know the willfully ignorant asshats are morally liable for the shit they do, but I really, really want to hold them legally and criminally liable for the harm and death they cause.
[/rant]

As a side note, a pro-lifer (same who broke a little the other day) wanted it to become a bet when I said that itā€™s a coin toss between a ObGyn team intervening and getting charged and a woman dying because of delayed intervention in the specific case of ectopic pregnancy.

Guy noted ā€œyou seem sure itā€™s gonna happenā€. And thinks Iā€™m trying to psych him when I point out that the 10-year old took only 3 days after the overturning to emerge, when I expected more than a month for such a case to emerge (and widdle olā€™ me thought I was being pessimistic there).

Iā€™m gonna make the guy pay if the ever actually properly decides to ā€œtake the Lā€. Like, procure a plush L. Handle it like a baby. Bring it everywhere. Soak it with TLC. Post pictures on social media of him and the L. And if anyone asks, tell them ā€œI earned this L fair and squareā€.
Too sadistic? Not sadistic enough? Just right?

Another thought Iā€™ve had is if a GOP nominee other than Trump would be willing to risk chaos and violence to claim the presidency. I know all GOP politicians are shameless liars, but to date Trump is the only presidential candidate in US history to attempt a violent coup. While I have nothing but contempt for DeSantis, I donā€™t know that he will try to cheat his way into the WH. Maybe he would rather be remembered as the man who restored democracy by returning to the tradition of conceding a lost election, rather than be remembered as Americaā€™s first fascist dictator who ended democracy. If Trump is the nominee, we know that he will never concede, and that there is nothing he wouldnā€™t do to regain power.

The non-repayment was the first missed public offshore payment for the Shanghai-based developer. With an outstanding $6.1 billion international bonds, Shimao is the sixth largest issuer among Chinese developers, according to Refinitiv.

Chinaā€™s property sector has been hit by a series of defaults on offshore debt obligations, highlighted by China Evergrande Group, once the countryā€™s top-selling developer but now the worldā€™s most indebted property company.

Three of the top five issuers - Evergrande, Kaisa Group and Sunac China - have already defaulted their dollar bonds.

They thought they had won when Reagan was elected, but he only used them and then tossed their agenda aside as soon as Nancyā€™s White House astrologer told her that the signs were propitious to do so.

So they started insinuating their people into every level of public life: education, politics, public administration, the military, sports, wherever they could get a toehold and start to influence policy.

Biden and McConnell Make a Deal and Democrats Scream

Joe Biden has decided to fill an upcoming vacancy in a U.S. district court in Kentucky with S. Chad Meredithā€¦

Democrats are furious. Gov. Andy Beshear (KY) said: ā€œIf the president makes that nomination, it is indefensible.ā€ Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY) said he was strongly opposed. Kentucky state Rep. Charles Booker (D) said: ā€œThe president is making a deal with the devil and once again and the people of Kentucky are crushed in the process.ā€ Has Biden lost his marbles, just as Republicans claim?

Actually, no. With 30 years experience in the Senate, Biden understands how the upper chamber works, especially with a 50-50 split that gives the minority leader a fair amount of power. Biden made a deal with Mitch McConnell (R-KY) that entails his nomination of Meredith to a district court position in Kentucky in return for McConnell not trying to block Bidenā€™s future appointments around the country. McConnell didnā€™t get to be the leader of his caucus by double crossing people, so Biden is fairly confident that McConnell will do what he promised. Bidenā€™s calculation here is that this appointment is very important to McConnell, but not so important in the larger scheme of things (Meredithā€™s rulings can all be appealed). Biden clearly feels that getting future judicial appointments through without a fight is worth sacrificing one out of 677 district judge positions.

Yarmuth, in particular, should have understood the situation better. He recommended two lawyers as U.S. attorneys. McConnell blocked them. Assuming McConnell keeps his wordā€”something that will be easy to verify fairly soonā€”Yarmuth will [still] get his suggestions realized quickly. Other Democrats sometimes fail to realize that when dealing with an opponent who has a fair amount of power to block your agenda, compromising with him is sometimes the best available option. (V)

That womanā€™s father is one messed-up guy.

ā€œThere you lefties are pathologizing legitimate political dissent again. You know who else did that? Stalin! Locked up the opposition in mental hospitals!ā€

And yeah, Jughashvili did that. And to this day, mental disorders and outright illnesses which disguise themselves in even the thinnest of veneers of politics or religion, particularly the latter, tend to fly a lot further under the radar before people realize what they are really dealing withā€¦

In the early 1970ā€™s, I was rejected for a credit card supposedly because of my lack of credit history. I accepted that excuse until learning that a male colleague with a shorter work history and similar salary had no trouble getting the same bank card. I complained to the bank about this discrimination; they reconsidered and gave me the card, but only after receiving a letter from my male manager confirming my position and salary.

IIRC, Manson was suspected in a couple of homicides and an attempted murder, but prosecutors could never prove any of it beyond a reasonable doubt so they never brought charges.

That being said, Trump is definitely a cult leader and to his cultists, a messianic figure - much like Charles Manson was.

Of course DeSantis would. 100% confident. He would be ecstatic to be the first fascist dictator that ended democracy. After all Florida was pivotal in the stolen election of 2000; the Brooks Bros riot followed by the outrageous SCOTUS decision.

In southwest Missouri, a Baptist compound for troubled teen boys promises redemption on its bucolic 200-acre campus. Behind the facilityā€™s arched gate, children will find a swimming pool, sports fields, and ranch for horses and exotic animals. AgapĆ© Boarding School ā€œis truly a place where miracles happen,ā€ one piano-filled commercial boasts.

ā€œAt AgapĆ©, we lovingly, patiently, and biblically teach your child the importance of submission to authority and the joys of being an obedient law-abiding citizen,ā€ a soft-spoken voiceover actor says while images of smiling teenagers flash across the screen. ā€œMom and Dad, we want to support you in your effort to rescue your son from himself.ā€

But former students interviewed by The Daily Beast say the school was far from heavenly. Instead, they encountered a climate more like Lord of the Flies, where staff were given free rein to restrain and beat students, and where some kids were emotionally and sexually abused. They claim AgapĆ© has functioned like a ā€œcultā€ and ā€œChristian torture compoundā€ for decades, allowing adults to manhandle teenagers and withhold food, water, and proper clothingā€”apparently without most parents ever knowing.

I complained to the bank about this discrimination; they reconsidered and gave me the card, but only after receiving a letter from my male manager confirming my position and salary.

So the bank still had to hear from your male ā€œkeeperā€ before they would give the card.

Strangely, my widowed mother didnā€™t have problems with credit cards. In the Seventies she received her first offer for a credit card, Dinerā€™s Club. She applied and they approved it.

She tells a story about buying a car with a bank loan shortly after she married my father. Her mother was willing to sell them their Nash, but they didnā€™t have the money. She walked down to the bank and applied for a signature loan, which the bank approved (this was in the late Fifties).

When she returned with the money (small town bank, they know everyone), my father was flummoxed. ā€œDonā€™t they need my signature?ā€ She told him why, they donā€™t know you. So he went to the bank to ask about it, and they told him the same: ā€œWhy, we donā€™t know you.ā€

This was the same bank that when i bought my first car in 1978, I had no credit history so no bank in Tennessee would loan me the money. I called up my hometown bank and asked them over the telephone to loan me the money, they said ā€œsure.ā€ When the cheque came in the mail a couple days later, it included the loan paperwork with a note basically saying ā€œwhen you get around to it, could you please fill in the paperwork and send it back to us.ā€

Itā€™s a weird Independence Day this year ā€” it certainly feels at least a little awkward to eat hot dogs and watch fireworks in order to celebrate our ā€œfreedomā€ from a country where everyone still has their reproductive rights. That being said, hot dogs are excellent condiment delivery systems and everyone loves a day off from work (shhh! I am technically not here!).

It is perhaps in the spirit of this holiday that Democratic Pennsylvania senate candidate John Fetterman tweeted out his latest campaign ad against Dr. Oz, the Republican Pennsylvania senate, a man who previously spent his life much of his life shilling magic beans made of lies. Itā€™s an especially festive ad, given that it features Dr. Oz giving People magazine a tour of his $48 million palatial residence in New Jersey, which once belonged to King George, set to the ā€œLifestyles of the Rich and Famousā€ theme.

But getting in two is much more luck than skill. (Iā€™ve become a fan of octordle, because itā€™s so much less luck then skill (or vocabulary, anyway.)

Alex Jonesā€™ Declaration of Independence against the Transhumanist Singularity got me to open up an incognito window and check out *nst*p*nd*t for the first time in 13 years.

Wags used to describe Reynolds as ā€œa linker, not a thinkerā€ decades ago, but the brainworms have apparently eaten the rest of his away.

Itā€™s Apollo sad.

I never read anything he writes. Iā€™m so grateful this Independence Day that we are independent of his presence in our White House and hope that it stays that way for the foreseeable future.

I hope we are independent of the presence of any member of the GOP in the WH for at least the next 20 years ā€” or longer if they remain the party of white supremacist theocracy and misogyny.

Iā€™m relieved too. Friendā€™s sister lives there with her fam. They were going to go but they were running late. Friends if thereā€™s did go. They got separated from their kids. It was horrible but theyā€™re all safe.

Yes it is. I attended an au pair party at a very nice house there many years ago thanks to a friend who was dating one of the young ladies. Itā€™s a big deal to have a shooting there.

It was when the rich started feeling threatened by the mobsterā€™s machine guns that the NFA was passed. If uncontrolled gun violence starts making the rich afraid now, we might actually see change.

I donā€™t know the area, but Iā€™m seeing comments from locals to the effect of ā€œā€¦if youā€™re not safe in Highland Park, youā€™re not safe anywhereā€ or ā€œHighland Park is pretty much the American dream suburb - if that suburb isnā€™t safe, then there isnā€™t a single place in this country that is safe.ā€

Northbrook just canceled their parade and fireworks. Pretty much everyone in the area has. The asshole is still on the loose.

As William Lewis noted once the threat expands to white folk, especially wealthy ones, the pressure rapidly mounts to actually do something effective rather than ā€œthoughts and prayersā€. Seen time and time again that something that is perceived as just is hurting the poor, minorities, or a looked-down upon group is swept under the table or met with shrugs.

I expect the full gamut of stupid responses to this. False flag. Call to arm all parades. White folk to retreat into armed enclaves. Lone wolf. As many casualties if the shooter had used a bow and arrows. And so on.
