The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Suraya Mohamed | January 7, 2022
Enter into esperanza spalding’s safe space for healing through music and song with a Tiny Desk (home) concert of selections from her Songwrights Apothecary Lab, (S.A.L.) project. A constant iteration of evolutionary ideas, her songwriting workshop is both a bold examination of human existence and resilience and a guided research collaboration with a collective of musicians and researchers in the practices of neuroscience, psychology and music therapy.

“All Formwelas (songs) from the S.A.L. are created through our research, divination, intuition, musicianship, taste, inspiration, and collaborative effort to design songs that enhance a specific salutary affect,” spalding writes on her project site, along with brief descriptions for each of the three Formwelas performed here.

“Formwela 3”:”a re-membering with the sun’s vast and perpetual blessing as evidenced by one’s own aliveness and capacity for creating within self and community an un-corruptible home-planet”

“Formwela 4”: “the articulation of needs streaming oxygenation through your ancestral vessel/vein of infinite life”

“Formwela 8”: “a sound at ease, with no urge to move from that comfort place”

spalding’s performance here is outstanding, and her top notch band, Loving presences (aka singers) and the Magical dance presence (aka dancer) add a dimension of creativity that amplifies the music’s message and nourishes the spirit. Green-screened walls explode to reveal a constellation of imagery that complements the flow of this seductive music. Be sure to watch until the end.

Duke is indifferent towards firecrackers and fireworks. Out of six dogs I’ve had only one freaked out from fireworks, a 100 lb keeshond/rottweiler mix. He would stand on my shoulders when the booms started.

It sounds like a war zone outside this year, lots of M-80s and big firecrackers. Way more illegal stuff than ever before.

I see that a few B-52s from Operation Linebacker have fallen into the time warp on their way to Hanoi and are unloading on Fort Worth. Minor strikes are underway in Weatherford and points west, probably Luftwaffe stragglers left over from the blitz.

Last year it was a war zone around here but nothing - literally - around here tonight. I’m shocked actually. We had some rain earlier, but it was done hours before darkness. The only fireworks I’ve seen were in that X music video I posted this morning. How odd…

When you strip the facts of the cases and turn them into just statistics, then it becomes easier to present it all as a nebulous “problem” that needs a “solution.” That’s when you can take refuge in arguing the numbers, like “AR-15s are used only in a small percentage of gun deaths annually” or “More kids are killed annually by pools/cars/feet/etc than guns!” Thus how you excuse inaction, by declaring that there’s no “solution” that will solve all gun crimes without violating “rights,” so you’re left tinkering around the edges and declaring “victory.”

Just read the article and it is just one long puff piece for the “pro-life” crowd. Their cross-section of the young women who supposedly make up the “pro-life generation” are about what you’d expect in 2022: the religiously brainwashed, young idiots who don’t get that all the “progress” made since Roe is now under attack, and (of course) the far-left nutters who are pushing that women are “exploited” by “Big Abortion.”

White?

They do not say. That information has not yet been released.

He was shot re-entering his home, and the SWAT team was able to arrest him whist he lay on his sofa. He has been taken to the hospital.

A Mt. Clemens man brandished a gun when his neighbor tried to talk to him about his dog, leading to an hours-long standoff Monday, authorities said.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Clinton Street, near Gratiot Avenue and Market Street, around 11:55 a.m. on reports of a man with a gun. Deputies said when a neighbor attempted to speak with the man, he brandished a gun and threatened to shoot her. The victim provided the man’s name and description when she called 911.

Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said the man was known to authorities, and deputies had been called to the home in the past.

When deputies got to the scene, they saw the 64-year-old man enter a condominium. He then came outside and fired at deputies before going back inside, authorities said.

“There is always that unknown risk when you are going to a call of what’s going to happen? A simple barking dog complaint or neighbor complaint can turn into a shots fired type call, which happened in this situation,” Wickersham said.

Deputies closed the road and set up a perimeter.

He came out again around 12:35 p.m. and fired at deputies with a rifle, authorities said. No one was hit, but a bullet struck an unoccupied patrol car. A deputy returned fire and believed he hit the man, who went back inside.

she honestly doesn’t believe that Judaism allows for abortion? Pretty damn ignorant of a Jew, I’d say.

In Israel, where the ultra-orthodox chief rabbi has substantial sway over what happens in the Knesset, here’s the Israeli abortion laws:

If it’s for medical reasons, there’s no time limit. They use whatever method the doctor thinks best. The government pays for it.

If it’s not for medical reasons, if it’s purely elective, the time limit is what they call 18 weeks and we call 20 weeks (because we count from a different zero). The government will pay for it if the woman is over 40, under 18, active duty military, or if the pregnancy came from rape, incest or adultery.

A woman who doesn’t fit any of those categories, she wants an elective abortion for whatever her own reasons might be… she has until the time limit to go to a private doctor and pay for it herself.

I say again — the ultra-orthodox chief rabbi is okay with this set of rules.

Or, y’know, the time 11 States tried to secede and start a whole new country. They attacked US military bases, stole the contents of the armories, they even got West Point’s commandant to come lead their army.

The United States government, the president, the congress, the actual US military… did not take this lying down.

I use the Whiskey Rebellion as the example because the whole thing happened so soon after the signing of the ratification of the Constitution that there’s no real way to argue that “Oh, well, the Founders wouldn’t have agreed had they been alive.” No, the ink was barely dry on the paper when the whole thing happened, and it was almost directly responsible for the formation of political parties (Jefferson rode to the White House on a wave of resentment over the whiskey tax).

The Whiskey Rebellion is basically the example of how fucking ridiculous the idea that the Founders as a group would have been cool with violent rebellion against the government or that the 2A exists as a means of allowing such.

Big Bay Boom, 2012 incident

In 2012, a show presented by Garden State Fireworks went awry. On Wednesday, July 4, 2012, 7,000 fireworks, intended for a 17-minute display, discharged prematurely and simultaneously from all four barges and the pier. The entire cache exploded in less than a minute.

The coordinated fireworks are triggered by computer, and the premature discharge was blamed on a corrupted computer file. There were no injuries; workers on the barges took refuge in metal shelters designed for their protection. Garden State Fireworks apologized and promised to do a future show for free. The accident went viral on the internet.

Mass shootings are a distinctly US thing. We have mass shootings in every situation, scenario, and location.

Drive bys? We got ‘em. (too many to identify)
Sniper nest shooters? We got those too (Las Vegas)
School shootings (Robb Elementary is just the latest)
Churches? Yeah, all denominations.
Synagogues? Yup. Tree of Life.
Colleges/universities? VA Tech.
Supermarkets?
Malls?
Movie Theaters?

Yes, Yes, and Yes.

Targeting cops? Yup. Those too.

Know what the defining characteristic for all those shootings? Easy availability of guns. It’s not doors. It’s not lack of good guys with guns. It’s not lack of teachers with guns.

It’s the fucking guns.

And this right wing lunatic asylum of a SCOTUS decided to gut gun regulations in a state with among the lowest per capita gun death rate in nation. States with strong gun laws have far lower per capita death rates from guns than lax states. That’s not a surprise. It’s highly correlated. Easy access to guns, when there’s no requirements for training, handling, or safety, means that it’s easier to shoot and kill on purpose. It’s also easier to have negligent handling incidents.

If all these mysterious Russian oligarch deaths were put onto film by Martin Scorsese, it’d look like one of those “dead men tell no tales” montage scenes from Goodfellas or Casino.

A multi-millionaire Russian businessman has been shot dead at his mansion, the latest elite with links to energy giant Gazprom to die in recent months.

Yuri Voronov, 61, head of a logistics company that held lucrative contracts with Gazprom in the Arctic, was found dead at his home in an ultra-wealthy suburb of St Petersburg around 2pm Monday.

Voronov was found floating in the swimming pool with a gunshot wound to his head, a Grand Power pistol nearby, and several spent cases at the bottom of the pool.

He is at least the sixth wealthy Russian businessman to die in mysterious circumstances since the start of the year, many of them with links to Gazprom, and two of whom died in the same St Petersburg suburb as Voronov.

It really does seem like someone in Russia (but I don’t exactly who) is wrapping up some loose ends or something.

And if everything is “God’s plan,” then there is absolutely no need to do anything about any sort of crime. (I’ll bet she wouldn’t feel the same if it was her.)

On the other hand, they can then argue “it’s God’s plan to have laws and courts” when it’s convenient.

From The Atheist Experience in Austin:

“You either have a God who sends child rapists to rape children or you have a God who simply watches it and says, ‘When you’re done, I’m going to punish you.’ If I could stop a person from raping a child, I would. That’s the difference between me and your God.”—Tracie Harris

Ms. Harris in that case was responding to a caller about another child rape case who was arguing it was the will of God. When she finished that quip, the caller responded that she was a sinner and deserved it. That earned a well-deserved hang-up on the show.

I remember reading somewhere that it’s possible to create fireworks displays with little to no sound involved. That the booms can be removed somehow. This is way above my pay grade, but why don’t we do this? Especially since we know a lot more about PTSD and claim to care about veterans. And for a nation that supposedly loves their pets, how many dogs and cats run away scared to death or spend a couple evenings in terror indoors over this on nearly every holiday now?

Last night was awful but it ended early because we got hammered with almost 2 inches of rain starting at about 10 pm. Cleo was a mess. I am over this crap. And the assholes who use fireworks as an excuse to fire guns into the air really need to have some Carnation Instant Karma in their grocery cart.

I’d like to live around happy and well adjusted humans, is that wrong?

I’m so sick of the religious fundamentalist narrative that Christianity and Islam have built together that women are responsible for controlling men’s lustful desires. Returning specifically to Christianity, the Bible is pretty clear that “if your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away.” In other words, men, if you’re having problems with ogling the ladies, that’s YOUR DAMN PROBLEM and you need to FIX IT YOURSELF, not complain about how the women are dressing. The Bible says that we should refrain from behaviors that cause other people to struggle as a courtesy, but that’s been warped out of all proportion because apparently it’s way easier to tell all women everywhere to cover up than to tell all men everywhere to quit being creepy and gross.

The belief system of Christianity is supposed to be about introspection; realizing that you are a sinful person, and while you can’t completely remove your sin by yourself, you should still do what you can to live a better life. Somehow that’s evolved into, “I abdicate my personal responsibility; Jesus will forgive me for anything wrong I do, so it literally doesn’t matter how much wrong I do.” We’re back to selling pardons for sins, but instead of invading Israel, they’re going on holy crusades against sluts and gays and gun-hating liberals.

Again, these Christian Biblical Fundamentalists are throwbacks to a morality that was developed thousands of years ago by nomadic sheep and goat herders who were dominated by bearded Patriarchs whose job it was to protect their property: their flocks and herds, their wives and their daughters (roughly in that order of importance).

The Cult of Virginity was important because Patriarchs wanted to ensure that their property was being passed on to their own spawn and not some cuckoo’s egg.

Which parts of the Bible are to be taken literally? “Turn the other cheek?”, “Suffer not a witch to live?” “Sleep with your widowed stepsister to sire her an offspring and heir?”

This is why the Founding Fathers decided to separate Church and State: to keep these sorts of arcane arguments from becoming part of how we are governed.

….This Fucking guy opened fire on a 4th of July parade and has killed at least six people.

The police: “Do me a favor…”

But George Floyd died because he was suspected of passing a fake $20 bill….

TBF — In some cases this happens because different police departments are involved: those shooting someone 60 times are not the same officers as those who capture a suspect alive.

Then there is the current mayor of HP, Nancy Rotering:

The mayor said she had known the shooting suspect, 22-year-old Robert E. Crimo III, when she was his Cub Scout pack leader.

“Many years ago, he was just a little boy, a quiet little boy that I knew,” she said.

When a suspect is known to the community and is part of a respected family, they are usually treated better than some rando on the street.

On a personal (somewhat related note), my dentist’s office in HP called this morning to cancel today’s noon appointment because the area is still considered a crime scene and most of their patients had cancelled because they were too apprehensive to visit the office. I had figured out a route that bypassed the area under investigation (I thought) but looks like I will be going tomorrow instead.

Oil is plummeting towards $100/barrel today. I don’t know why, but prices at the pump should continue to decline.

Why? The energy market has as much to do with the “Free Market” as it is revered as an ideology by the GOP (and Libertarians) as Christianity has to do with Protestant Fundamentalism.

Disagree, unlike the stock market, which can defy economic reality for years on end, commodity markets are largely driven by supply and demand realities. Commodity markets are starting to price in a recession. It isn’t just energy; metals and lumber are getting hammered as well. The market is saying that inflation is a bigger threat to the downside than the Russia mess is to the upside.

That’s true, and Russia is a big enough component so that their oil cannot be replaced at current demand levels. There’s very little capacity left in OPEC, short of removing sanctions from Iran. Nigeria and Angola haven’t even been producing at the OPEC specified level because their infrastructure is too f*cked. US can bring on more production, but producers are still reeling from the 2020 meltdown. There’s no conspiracy going on here. There were shenanigans by Russia in the nat gas market last year in preparation for the invasion. The oil futures curve out in 2023 never got much above 100; the oil market never expected the price spike to persist. Investment in future production isn’t made based on spot price, it’s made based on the futures pricing. Oil futures are below 80 for the second half of 2023.

oil producers, and refineries, shut down a substantial portion of their potential when the world was in shutdown. Remember that at one point the price of oil was in the negative, because there was no storage capacity available?

When the world opened up again, restarting the closed facilities isn’t like flipping a light-switch, it has to be gradually ramped up. At exactly the time that pent-up demand for gas (for both cars and planes) was jumping hugely.

Supply is catching up to demand, so prices are coming back to what we think is “normal”.

I do love butter, but this is getting out of hand.

A large tub of Lurpak is now close to £10 in one major supermarket, it was revealed today, as it emerged shops have started putting anti-theft devices on staples such as cheese, meat and baby milk because they are classed as ‘high value’.

Shoppers took to social media to share pictures of security tags on £3.99 blocks of Aldi cheddar and £8 Co-op lamb chops in Wolverhampton because people are stealing them due to the cost of living crisis.

Tesco has fitted security tags to large cans of baby milk at Tesco Extra in Streatham, south London, after Sainsbury’s also started tagging tubs of Aptamil baby, toddler and follow-on milks.

Although baby milk near me is under lock and key, as well as razers and spray paint.

Shooter targeted cops. The shooter targeted the “good guys with guns”. So there’s that.

Only in the US can we have multiple mass shootings and it ticks off all the hot button topics that right wingers claim will stop gun violence - good guys with guns, doors, shootings at places other than schools, armed teachers, armed law enforcement, etc.

The one thing that they refuse to touch: gun regulations that make it harder to get guns.

repeating from a day ago

we cannot regulate guns in any way because it might temporarily inconvenience even one law abiding citizen (as if, but ok)

so we must live with almost daily mass shootings by people who obviously, in hindsight, should not have had access to firearms

meanwhile

we must regulate with ruthless and draconian efficiency every possible avenue to abortion lest even one slips through, because that one single life is oh so ‘precious’ above all else, including the life of the mother, even if she’s a child and a rape victim

clearly none of the lives of actually born people killed by guns (including police) are ‘precious’

.

that is not hyperbole.
it’s a fact.
because otherwise there would be regulation with the same ruthless and draconian efficiency. and that could be done without trampling on the rights of responsible gun owners.

Teddy's Person  Jul 5, 2022 • 10:03:38am

DeSantis throws more red meat to the base in anticipation of his 2024 presidential run. At this point, he’s got to be the J6 committee’s biggest fan, particularly with media focus on Trump’s temperament.

Public universities in Florida will be required to survey both faculty and students on their political beliefs and viewpoints, with the institutions at risk of losing their funding if the responses are not satisfactory to the state’s Republican-led legislature.
The unprecedented project, which was tucked into a law signed Tuesday by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, is part of a long-running, nationwide right-wing push to promote “intellectual diversity” on campuses — though worries over a lack of details on the survey’s privacy protections, and questions over what the results may ultimately be used for, hover over the venture.
Based on the bill’s language, survey responses will not necessarily be anonymous — sparking worries among many professors and other university staff that they may be targeted, held back in their careers or even fired for their beliefs.

The only details on the survey come via a passage over its purpose, to discover “the extent to which competing ideas and perspectives are presented” at public universities, and whether students “feel free to express beliefs and viewpoints on campus and in the classroom.”

Though the bill does not specify what the survey results will be used for, both DeSantis and Rodrigues suggested that the state could institute budget cuts if university students and staff do not respond in a satisfactory manner.

When pressed by reporters, the governor did not offer any specific examples of repression and discrimination faced by conservative students, simply saying that he knows “a lot of parents” who worry about their children being “indoctrinated” on campus.

In addition to the survey, the bill also prevents officials from limiting campus speech that “may be uncomfortable, disagreeable or offensive” — a measure that, as Democrats in the state Legislature pointed out, will also make it easier for groups like the KKK or the Proud Boys to hold events on campus. Nah, media amplification plays a role. If you don’t believe that then look at how issues like immigration gain and lose importance in stride with coverage of scary caravans. It may be more a matter of a woman who desperately wanted a child and discovered that it was not viable. She may have just wanted compassion from the doctor and understanding of her feeling of loss. A doctor may be excellent at diagnosis and treatment but fail in offering empathy to someone who is devastated by the doctor’s analytic words in describing what she is facing. re: #217 Dopamine Fish

Also, notice how the drooling moran in the pictured tweet didn’t mention anything about being literally an hour’s drive from some of the most lax gun laws in the country, where he very well could have bought the rifle that morning, for all we know.

Just an FYI, the gun used in the shooting was purchased in the “chicago area”

A rifle used in the massacre and recovered at the scene had been purchased in the Chicago area, Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said at a news conference. Officials found another rifle in the suspect’s vehicle after apprehending him, Covelli said, adding that there were firearms at his residence as well.

The weapons were legally purchased from separate locations, Covelli said.

“The Chicago area” is quite large, and includes parts of Indiana. I’m not ruling out that the gun was purchased legally in Illinois, especially considering that the authorities also said this was planned out weeks in advance, but there isn’t any evidence so far to judge either way.

My wife just pointed out Laura Loomer is the equivalent of “more Catholic than the Pope.”

Apropos of nothing, this brings up a scene from the first episode of season three of the HBO show, Succession. Cousin Greg is monitoring social media for Kendall and he reports that the Pope is following Kendall on Twitter. Kendall expresses surprise and Greg pulls back a little by stating “Yes, the Pope. Well, a pope, anyway.”.

Maybe, but the term “Chicago area” as used in local media tends to refer to that whole corner of Illinois, plus Lake and parts of Porter County in Indiana. Like I said: I can be quite wrong about my belief that the gun in question was brought over the state line. It’s not impossible to buy a gun in Illinois.

Nah, media amplification plays a role. If you don’t believe that then look at how issues like immigration gain and lose importance in stride with coverage of scary caravans. Gasoline prices very likely peaked already and will be significantly lower in the fall, unless Russia goes full retard and stops exports.

Remember also that for rural families, gas and groceries are major items in the budget, taking up a much larger share than in urban areas with higher average incomes

This is interesting. Joe Rogan says that he won’t have Trump on as a guest because he doesn’t want to help him.

I listened to the podcast with Lex Fridman. Actually decent overall, with the exception of the whole ‘Biden’s mental decline’ bit. But he was unambiguously anti Trump. Wonder how many fans he’ll lose as a result.

No, no, you’re not thinking right-wing enough. Ban MEN from wearing women’s clothing. Anyone who buys women’s clothing must be ruthlessly investigated to ensure that they are a biological female before the sale is allowed to proceed. Men who are caught wearing women’s clothing should be convicted of a felony.

DeSantis is definitely going to run 100%. And he will beat Trump as he continues to play both sides. DeSantis just signed the fascist Thoughtcrime bill survey, but he also signed a seemingly left-leaning bill expanding college tuition eligibility assistance to teens working traditional jobs instead of just volunteer work. Of course with DeSantis, there is an anterior motive of then using the envisioned “purified” Florida state colleges to promote right wing fascism once they are in school, but as of now this legislation will help poorer students in their college efforts.

But make no mistake, DeSantis is a more refined, disciplined fascist who will use populism on both sides to achieve his goals of personal power.

Documentary filmmaker Alex Holder revealed that he has been provided “two armed guards” for protection following a subpoena for materials from the Jan. 6 committee.

Holder, a British filmmaker, was subpoenaed by the committee in regard to footage and interviews Holder and his team shot throughout the production of Unprecedented, a documentary film on Trump and his inner circle during the 2020 presidential campaign. Holder confirmed that he and his team are cooperating fully with the committee.

In a Wednesday interview with BBC, Holder detailed that since the revelation of his cooperation with the committee, he has been assigned a security detail that “follow me around everywhere,” and that he has become the subject of various conspiracies. “According to some, I’m an undercover FBI agent, some think I’m an MI6 spy, and there’s all sorts of conspiracies and threats that are coming through,” he told the BBC.

Yes, that’s the only reason. It has nothing to do with the French, who contributed their navy, professional soldiers, arms, and logistics. It has nothing to do with the Continental Army, which was a professional military organization that had trained with French and British military units. Literally none of that matters; the only thing that won the Revolutionary War for us is a bunch of kids out murdering civilians with AR-15’s.

The Tea Party is likewise founded on the notion that a freely and democratically elected federal government is no different than a hereditary monarchy.

On of the interesting causes of the American revolution was that, by 1776 the UK wasn’t a hereditary monarchy. It was a constitutional monarchy. Power was no longer in the hands of the king, but largely in the parliament. (That was a problem for the colonists because before the glorious revolution they had the same relation to power as anyone in England — they could petition the king and that was about it. After 1688 they were in a significantly inferior position — parliament ruled and the colonists had no representation in parliament. The “tyrant” wasn’t George III, it was parliament).

“strictest” is doing a lot of work here its not authorized to do

And a textbook case of why kicking enforcement rules back to the state-level makes things quickly hit lowest common denominator levels since lax enforcement or laws in one state for things (or activities) that can easily cross state lines makes things about as lax in any surrounding state.
