LYRICS:

I’m going to rent myself a house
In the shade of the freeway
I’m going to pack my lunch in the morning
And go to work each day
And when the evening rolls around
I’ll go on home and lay my body down
And when the morning light comes streaming in
I’ll get up and do it again
Amen

I want to know what became of the changes
We waited for love to bring
Were they only the fitful dreams
Of some greater awakening
I’ve been aware of the time going by
They say, in the end it’s the wink of an eye
And when the morning light comes streaming in
You’ll get up and do it again
Amen

Caught between the longing for love
And the struggle for the legal tender
Where the sirens sing and the church bells ring
And the junkman pounds his fender
Where the veterans dream of the fight
Fast asleep at the traffic light
And the children solemnly wait for the ice cream vendor
Out into the cool of the evening strolls the Pretender
He knows that all his hopes and dreams
Begin and end there

Ah the laughter of the lovers as they run through the night
Leaving nothing for the others but to choose off and fight
And tear at the world with all their might
While the ships bearing their dreams sail out of sight

I’m going find myself a girl
Who can show me what laughter means
And we’ll fill in the missing colors
In each other’s paint by number dreams
And then we’ll put our dark glasses on
And we’ll make love until our strength is gone
And when the morning light comes streaming in
We’ll get up and do it again
Get it up again

I’m going to be a happy idiot
And struggle for the legal tender
Where the ads take aim and lay their claim
To the heart and the soul of the spender
And believe in whatever may lie
In those things that money can buy
Though true love could have been a contender

Are you there?
Say a prayer for the Pretender
Who started out so young and strong
Only to surrender

A conversation with Brian Fallon, once a top aide to Democrats like Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton, who now runs Demand Justice, an advocacy group dedicated to reforming the courts.
vanityfair.com

How could the Democrats have reacted more effectively to the recent decisions, other than sending out a barrage of fundraising e-mails?

Start taking on the court rhetorically as a political villain and as an institution that is out of touch with a majority of the American public. That is something Biden could easily do. Schumer is doing it, calling them a radical MAGA court. Elizabeth Warren has been doing it. The medium to long term here is a plan to rein in the court’s power. And you’re only going to build support for that idea if we start politically making the court into an issue. And that requires rhetorically taking the court on, invoking it on the campaign trail as an institution that needs to be checked, making the case for Democrats remaining in power in Congress.

re: #11 retired cynic

Number two is having an all-of-the-above strategy for responses to the setbacks that the court is issuing. So in the context of Roe, pressing the envelope and exploring ideas like opening abortion clinics on federal lands in red states. It’s very dispiriting when lawmakers and outside experts propose things and the Biden administration rules them out within 48 hours. What does he gain by that? No Republicans are suddenly going to cut deals with him on other issues because the president is, say, taking court expansion off the table. But there’s going to be a point where you run out of workarounds for specific rulings. The third category is embracing proposals to reduce the court’s power. There are proposals to strip the court’s jurisdiction to review certain matters, or to raise the bar for what margin the court needs to overturn an act of Congress. So leave the door open, let those of us on the outside and rank and file members of Congress get the conversation animated and build the political space where the president can support it, quote unquote, reluctantly in a couple of years. This is how Biden got there on the filibuster.

Be careful what you wish for.

I got a mile outside of town, and I hit an elk with my Smart. The score is now four deer, an elk, and a wild turkey. My car is wrecked. I limped back to town, and now I am on endless hold with the VA to cancel my appointment this afternoon. I then need to call the sheriff, then the insurance company, then try to arrange to rent a car in Scottsbluff (sixty miles away), then find someone who can fix my car.

vanityfair.com

today’s electoral-vote.com has a few thoughts

first - “Nonetheless, and as we’ve written before, Biden needs to do something big. Maybe many somethings”

as to these three:

Allowing Abortions on Federal Land: The main issue here is the Assimilative Crimes Act (18 U.S. Code 13), which says that if a person violates a state’s laws on federal land within that state, they can be prosecuted by the federal government. Obviously, Biden could ask the DoJ not to engage in such prosecutions and AG Merrick Garland would probably agree. However, the statute of limitations is 5 years. That means that any doctor who performed an abortion at, say, the VA in Oklahoma City would end up on a Republican enemies’ list, and would almost certainly find themselves facing federal charges if a Republican wins the presidency in 2024.

Declaring a National Health Emergency: This would be a Shakespearean response, in the sense that it would be a lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing. That is to say, it is not clear that such a declaration would actually give Biden any meaningful tools to counter the Dobbs decision. And anything he did try, well, we have a Supreme Court that has taken a narrow view of national emergency powers (both with Biden and with Trump) and has taken an even narrower view of abortion rights. So, any movement on this front from Biden would almost certainly lead to an eventual defeat.

Guaranteeing Access to Abortifacient Drugs: This is the most promising line of attack for the administration, but it comes with challenges. Thanks to the Hyde Amendment, the federal government can’t directly distribute or subsidize the drugs. And until red states make clear how they plan to police the mail (if they do try it), the White House can’t really adopt countermeasures.

this is not to say that the WH didn’t drop the ball while everyone knew what was coming…

The last deer I hit was at seventy, so maybe not. The damage appears to be the right headlamp, windshield (the elk slammed into the windshield), the bonnet, the right fender, and the ventilator intake grille. (This seems to be similar to the damage I had hitting the last deer.)

If it is totalled, well, I do have collision/comprehensive/replacement value insurance on my 2013 car.

In my (limited) understanding of British politics Priti Patel (along with Jacob Rees-Mogg, Gove and others) was a hard brexiteer - a member of the so called “European Research Group”. Boris Johnson was from a different faction of conservatives, the “One Nation Conservatism” (which is Conservativism + to support for the welfare state on the grounds of noblesse oblige).

Yeah, that’s been known. What hasn’t been known is why; there were rumors he didn’t want to hit anyone nearby (poppycock, in my opinion - a police marksman would be confident in his shot). Waiting for approval to take the shot makes sense and lines up with the rest of the shitshow.

According to information to Aftonbladet, the detainee has participated in NMR’s demonstrations. He has also written articles for the Nazi online magazine Nordfront, and participated in Nordfront’s radio productions. He must also on several occasions order stickers from NMR, which according to the Expo foundation is common when conducting activism on behalf of NMR. He has been active in the Nazi Nordic resistance movement for several years, and has expressed sympathy for Alternative for Sweden on social media. On Facebook, he has posted pictures from demonstrations with the Nordic resistance movement in which he participated. The suspected perpetrator has also been a recurring writer for NMR’s online magazine Nordfront, where he spread anti-Semitic and Holocaust-denying conspiracy theories.
In social media, the man has in several cases expressed that he denies that the Holocaust would have taken place.
The man is 33 years old and written in southern Sweden.
In connection with the start of Almedalen Week, he posted on social media an interview and an article about a school killer who in the 1990s murdered several dozen people in a shooting.

Same fuckers who complain about cost of gas have no problem buying metric tons of fireworks and then blow up their cars (or body parts) costing them far more.

Recent study - fireworks kill 5, start 20,000 fires, cause $105 million in property damage, and 9,100 injuries annually.

Last year, 9 people died, and 11,000+ injured. States relaxed fireworks rules, which means more people are able to blow shit up.

re: #14 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

hi

Be careful what you wish for.

I got a mile outside of town, and I hit an elk with my Smart. The score is now four deer, an elk, and a wild turkey. My car is wrecked. I limped back to town, and now I am on endless hold with the VA to cancel my appointment this afternoon. I then need to call the sheriff, then the insurance company, then try to arrange to rent a car in Scottsbluff (sixty miles away), then find someone who can fix my car.

Do you know a butcher who can turn that elk carcass into roasts and steaks and so on?

It’s a shame Conservatives won’t see this.

No. Two families. Two Americans being held in Russia right now.

Biden sent a nice letter to Griners wife saying “we’re doing everything we can to get Brittney back home safe.”

And the other family didn’t get a letter so they’re all like “WTF are we, chopped liver?”

Authentic frontier gibberish. How would shooting the grandchildren protect them? I think she meant to say she would shoot someone else who threatened them. It would be odd though for a trigger-happy Repug to characterize that as a “last resort.” .

Otoh, they did kill off a big part of their older generation with their covid denial and antivaxx bullshit, so now they might be moving on to the younger one. Young people being harder to kill, this would naturally call for more direct measures. Hence the ever present guns.

Again, the worst thing about things right now is when Dems do exactly what people are screaming at them to do, and either it’s met with disbelief or scream of “it’s not enough therefore it’s useless!”

And when they do actually do performative stuff or try to command the cameras to put the word out, they’re accused of JUST being performative and just get screams of “DO SOMETHIIIIIIIING!!”, usually again of things they are exactly doing already.

Because as much as folks act like they’re savvy enough to know when media, either traditional or social, is selling them a load, they still go along with the same frames of ‘Everything Dems do is wrong and pointless and you should hate them, Everything Republicans do are genius and 10th level, why don’t you admire them more?!’

Breaking News: James Comey and Andrew McCabe, former FBI officials who Donald Trump wanted prosecuted, were both subjected to rare, intensive IRS audits. nyti.ms

I’m generally against governments abusing their powers, but in Comey’s case: fuck him.

I hope it financially fucked him over.

Motherfucker decided to get his Whitewater back on and use the FBI to influence a Presidential election to keep on Trump’s good side, and look what it got him.

Comey does not get near the volume of blame he should for getting Trump elected as he should. Basically tanks HRC’s campaign a week before the election while simultaneously not saying shit about the probe he had going on Trump.

If I believed in hell, I would hope Comey would burn in it forever. Quite frankly, he’s indirectly responsible for the current fucking religious overthrow of the Supreme Court.

Instead of resigning along with his 10s of cabinet members, Johnson “reshuffled the Cabinet.” Several remaining members of Johnson’s cabinet, perhaps a bit dizzy from all the jostling, nevertheless said they remain loyal and want him to keep on doing whatever it is he’s doing. But the number of faithful Tories keeps declining, and if Tori Amos and Tori Spelling jump ship, he’s toast.

As multiple outlets have reported, Fulton County DA Fani Willis has obtained subpoenas for Rudy Giuliani, Kenneth Cheesebro, John Eastman, Jenna Ellis, Jacki Pick Deason, Cleta Mitchell, and Lindsey Graham. (Thanks to Georgia Public Radio for releasing all the documents.)

The subpoenas reveal that the scope of the investigation is broader than originally understood (which previously was limited to Trump’s call to Brad Raffensperger to ask him for almost 12,000 votes).

For example, a number of the subpoenas have language similar to this, from Rudy’s subpoena.

When Prayer Warriors aren’t enough.

For two thousand years there’s been a significant portion of Christians who think people with epilepsy are demon-possessed (including my ex-wife).

They scare me.

In other news, after my photo-shoot of the car, I found about two dozen various size expended fireworks which had been shot at my house, and one burn mark on the paint, apparently from the wingnuts in the park.

When I walked to the general store, the lawn behind the church was full of expended fireworks and commercial boxes. I spent some time cleaning up the churchyard for them.

Shooting a mortar at yourself is suicide. A few years ago some attention-seeking kid who “always did random things” lit one and rested it on his head. His head was gone in an instant, traumatizing his friends.

When firing professional fireworks, we are taught one rule: The fuses can go FAST. You light the fuse, you twist at the waist and cover the back of your head. You do not have time to do much else before the shell leaves the tube. And like any big gun, those things move fast and have quite a bit of power behind them.

The basic idea of how rockets achieve lift is exactly why you don’t want something like that resting on you in any way.

It also bears mentioning that an unrifled barrel can potentially send a shell caroming in any random direction within a certain angle from the muzzle, which is why we were given the instructions we were given. From the top side and the bottom side, fireworks are dangerous to anyone they’re near. Fuck around and find out.

Why don’t they use ignitors, like in model rocketry? I fired rockets from a nice safe distance as a kid.

Most high-end shows do use electronic ignition, and are quite safe, comparatively speaking. It’s only the low-end amateurs that use hand-lit fuses, but of course, that’s where the safety precautions are most often ignored.

The ones at the Rockwall fireworks are fired using a panel about 30 feet away.

It is also illegal, at a federal level, to fire mortars larger than a certain caliber by hand, period. This is because those guns are undeniably deadly and unsafe for any amateur operators to use.

Russian politician threatens to retaliate against US sanctions by reclaiming Alaska (Anchorage Daily News)

MOSCOW - A top Kremlin official warned the U.S. Wednesday that it could face the “wrath of God” if it pursues efforts to help establish an international tribunal to investigate Russia’s action in Ukraine, while the Russian lower house speaker urged Washington to remember that Alaska used to belong to Russia.

Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council chaired by President Vladimir Putin, denounced the U.S. for what he described as its efforts to “spread chaos and destruction across the world for the sake of ‘true democracy.’”

“The entire U.S. history since the times of subjugation of the native Indian population represents a series of bloody wars,” Medvedev charged in a long diatribe on his Telegram channel, pointing out the U.S. nuclear bombing of Japan during World War II and the war in Vietnam. “Was anyone held responsible for those crimes? What tribunal condemned the sea of blood spilled by the U.S. there?”

It’s garbage from beginning to end, of course, but this bit was particularly notable:

“The entire U.S. history since the times of subjugation of the native Indian population represents a series of bloody wars,” Medvedev charged…

Someone should remind him of Russian/Alaska native relations when they were in Russia.

I suppose I could also give a resume of Russia’s “peaceful imperial history,” but I’m not going to bother.

Other side of the state.

Douglas County reports second suspected monkeypox case (Omaha World-Herald, this morning)

The Douglas County Health Department on Tuesday reported a second probable case of monkeypox. The report comes less than a week after what officials said was the state’s first presumed case of the virus.

The second patient is a known contact of a confirmed case, health officials said in a statement. The person is isolated at home and receiving outpatient care. An investigation is underway to identify and inform anyone else who may have been exposed.

Iowa also reported its first probable case over the weekend. Nationwide, 460 cases had been confirmed in 32 states and territories by July 1, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Nearly 5,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported worldwide in the current outbreak.

The number of U.S. cases has more than doubled since a week ago. That is a concern, said Justin Frederick, the Douglas County Health Department’s supervisor of communicable disease epidemiology.

After a slight dip, Nebraska’s COVID-19 case count rose again last week.

The state recorded 3,474 new cases during the week ending Friday, up 26% from 2,752 the previous week, according to a World-Herald analysis of data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

However, the state’s per-capita rate remained about one-fourth below the rate for the U.S., where cases also are rising.

The new cases brought the state to a new milestone: Nebraska topped the half-million mark for COVID cases, reaching a total of 500,574.

The Panhandle plus Grant County are doing a bit better than the state as a whole.

Positivity rate: 11.1%
Fully vaccinated (including boosters): Still 47% (stuck there for months)
Most cases by age: 20-29, then 30-39
Deaths: 298

Breakdown by county to determine high or low transmission is still prohibited by the state governor. Vaccination and testing stations are still closed by his orders.

“mortar-style projectile” Again. A guy was killed in Maine trying to shoot one off the top of his beer drinking helmet.

No, people, no. They use explosives in weapons BGECAUSE they will kill instantly and gruesomely. Fireworks mostly use a different kind of explosive, black powder, but it, too, was quite capable of killing and was used for that for centuries. Don’t fool around with them.

Just to relate a conversation about gun control and SCOTUS I had today. Back in the days of Bonnie and Clyde the Feds regulated full auto guns. As we know. Yet I see a lot of parallels in the problem from then until now.

The essential thing is those guns were too much in the hands of criminals for police to deal with. The AR and other semi-auto models today, it’s just too much killing horsepower to let run around.

This ain’t gonna happen but if they regulated certain assault rifle models like they do full auto, we satisfy certain legal angles and get a very specific handle on who has those guns.

It’s my feeling that we would have to make all semi-automatic firearms with detachable magazines class III weapons for that to work. I’d also say get rid of the Hughes Amendment and reopen the full auto registry as a carrot at the same time.

It would work, just as it did then, but even if it did get passed, how do we handle the gazillion rifles already out there? I’d certainly be fine with registering my AK and getting a tax stamp for it but you know the nutjobs would go nuts about it.
