Crush White Nationalism  Jul 29, 2022 • 3:21:28pm

Sure, Mike.

Notorious alt-right troll Mike Cernovich is attempting to whitewash his history as a conspiracy theorist and misogynist by claiming that taking a traditional Amazonian plant-based hallucinogenic tea, ayahuasca, made him a better person.

During recent interviews, Cernovich has suggested that his experience taking ayahuasca opened his heart and allowed him to become a more loving person. Despite his claims, Cernovich’s recent social media posts and media hits show that his newfound focus on love, connection, and helping people is nothing more than a facade and he is still the same troll and misogynist he has always been.

Of late, Cernovich has viciously mocked and attacked actor Amber Heard, Washington Post journalist Taylor Lorenz, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, pro-abortion adovcates, the LGBTQ community, and Democrats in general. He has also recently spread conspiracy theories about Jeffrey Epstein’s criminal accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Twitter’s deputy general counsel Jim Baker, among others.

Rape apologist Mike Cernovich is trying to whitewash his past as an alt-right troll by claiming that ayahuasca made him a better person (MediaMatters)

There’s a lot of that going around lately. Chuck C. Johnson deleted his gotnews site and was also trying to claim he’s a new man who voted for Joe Biden and no longer a raving Holocaust-denying racist weirdo, and he actually convinced some especially gullible lefties. Meanwhile, his newer Substack page is full of the same old twisted shit he’s always posted.

Expect tonight and the next few nights to be lit with Ukrainian targeting of Russian concentrations.

One of Trump’s allies who knows not to stick foot in mouth:

If the rest of Trumpdom was as cold and capable then Trumpdom wouldn’t be the laughing stock that it is.

Vince McMahon was forced to retire from his own company because he doled out $12M or maybe $16M to employees for hush money after his sexual exploitation of them.

Linda and Vince supposedly have not lived together in years.

Remember, Linda and Vince sent Trump at least $6M over several years, before Trump decided to run for office.

I still want to know what they really bought with that money. Vince always had guest celebrities on his shows but never paid them that much.

Not sure if anyone else suggested this.

I saw you posted earlier today or yesterday about the travel cost to your interview. Would the company pay you mileage? It could be they would but wait for the interviewee to ask. I know there was a discussion about relocation costs, but in my experience, I’ve been reimbursed for travel to in-person interviews (even when it was somewhat local).

I’ve read that Tolkien’s son doesn’t care about the addition of POC to this rendition of his father’s work. Plus, his grandson was a consultant. I mean, it was all fantasy so who cares?

re: #23 Patricia Kayden

JRR Tolkien’s son Christopher, who edited the works posthumously published, died before RoP was made.

Christopher’s son Simon is working with Amazon to oversee the production.

The whiners are claiming Simon is not a True-Tolkien because he green-lit things that drive the bigots crazy.

Speaking of race, casting and a great response to use on the butt hurt ones.

I sometimes show my students a 10 minute clip from the CBS morning show interviewing LMM about Hamilton as it was going from off-Broadway to Broadway. (Then we listen to some of the songs.)

In the interview, LMM said the he wanted to tell to story of America then told by America now. It fucking knocks me out (and I fall apart) every time I hear him say that.

27
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Jul 29, 2022 • 4:42:07pm

Trump exposed how common the everyday bigot is in America. He drew tens of millions of them to himself.

As I mentioned earlier, Tolkien fandom has drawn a great many bigots and fascist-lovers. This really gets down to the my-precious-European-heritage bit that underlies so much whining.

I always appreciated this aspect of him however:

25 July 1938
20 Northmoor Road, Oxford

Dear Sirs,

Thank you for your letter. I regret that I am not clear as to what you intend by arisch. I am not of Aryan extraction: that is Indo-Iranian; as far as I am aware none of my ancestors spoke Hindustani, Persian, Gypsy, or any related dialects. But if I am to understand that you are enquiring whether I am of Jewish origin, I can only reply that I regret that I appear to have no ancestors of that gifted people. My great-great-grandfather came to England in the eighteenth century from Germany: the main part of my descent is therefore purely English, and I am an English subject — which should be sufficient. I have been accustomed, nonetheless, to regard my German name with pride, and continued to do so throughout the period of the late regrettable war, in which I served in the English army. I cannot, however, forbear to comment that if impertinent and irrelevant inquiries of this sort are to become the rule in matters of literature, then the time is not far distant when a German name will no longer be a source of pride.

Your enquiry is doubtless made in order to comply with the laws of your own country, but that this should be held to apply to the subjects of another state would be improper, even if it had (as it has not) any bearing whatsoever on the merits of my work or its sustainability for publication, of which you appear to have satisfied yourselves without reference to my Abstammung.

I trust you will find this reply satisfactory, and

remain yours faithfully,

J. R. R. Tolkien

Leaves only $471M after taxes.

Because they equate the Men of the West with the Nazis, and the orcs and the dark men of the East with the Jews and the Blacks. Certainly not what Tolkien had in mind when writing the Lord of the Rings mythology, but that hasn’t stopped any of them from misinterpreting any other work they favor.

Cash value tonight is estimated at $600m. So chase that chocolate down with some coffee.

I didn’t have any cash in my wallet at lunch so I asked my wife if she had any…She had a couple of 20s and a 50. I took the 50 and said that if I won she’d get it back. She said if I won she’d get more than the $50. I also told her I promised to pay everyone’s mortgage in a previous thread here…she’s okay with that so we’re cool.

I’d keep working for a while because I like what I’m doing right now and I’d need the distraction while having lawyers and financial advisors figure out how to structure the windfall so I could do the most good for my community and beyond while keeping myself engaged. Oh, and I’d do a shit-ton of surfing and skiing. Beyond that, my only fantasy is buying the huge house asshole built blocking my view of the ocean so I could tear it down and donate the lot to the coastal commission.

It’s not quite as bad as that. (It’s still bad; let me elaborate.) The AGs are not suing to be allowed to discriminate against LGBTQ teens. They are suing to prevent the government from cutting off funding BECAUSE they discriminate against LGBTQ teens. That is to say, they aren’t suing for the right to deny food to LGBTQ kids; they’re suing so that they can keep receiving that sweet federal moolah while they discriminate against these kids in other ways, such as forcing the trans kids to detransition.

These ass-magats have no idea how evil this looks to most of the human race. To others within their socio-cultural bubble, American conservatism, it looks normal and even praiseworthy. In that respect it is like a conclave of expert cannibal chefs gathered for a supreme feast. Those within the bubble think it is wonderful while everyone else reacts with horror and revulsion. Conservatism is beyond redemption and there is no point other than short term tactical advantage to even try to neotiate with it or reform it. The whole movement, frankly, is pathological and has no place in the modern world. It must be removed, excised as a menace to human progress and survival. How this might be done is anybody’s guess but I continue to put some hope in self immolation. We have already seen a couple of hundred thousand conservatives killed off by their fervent antivaxx dogma, and much greater opportunities are bound to happen along.

My father’s parents divorced when he was a toddler; both of them remarried, dad has a half-brother from each of them. My uncles were not amused when I insisted they were quarter-brothers to each other.

The part of L3Harris I work at, in Greenville, TX, is a defense contractor. One of the largest groups there, avionics, is part of the United Auto Workers union. They negotiate the contracts that most of the site follows, but since we are a “right to be exploited state,” not everyone has to join. Especially us programmers. But the people I work with definitely enjoy the benefits, which includes a shutdown between Christmas and New Years.

Well, the union’s contract is going to have to be negotiated soon, probably in the next year or two. Since the last time the contract was negotiated, L3 merged with Harris, with Harris being the dominant company, because, of the two, they were actually profitable. So, we’ve been having some changes, including health care (switching to Cigna over United Healthcare), changing the vacation system (we used to get 4 weeks to start, 5 after three years, and you would get paid for any days not taken, now we get “unlimited” as long ask you ask after 200 hours, unlimited self-sick days and five family-sick days, but we don’t get paid for what we don’t use), and a few other things. But Greenville is such a large division, and we have such an important customer - there’s an official Air Force division on site - that we haven’t had to do a lot of the changes other locations have.

But my coworkers are worried about what the union might have to give up on the next contract. My manager wondered out loud if we start our own union, and so I suggested that, if people wanted to ensure that the union had the power to negotiate, that they could join it. “I’m not sure I could join a union,” one of the “Let’s Go Brandon” types (yeah, he said it out loud earlier this year) said. More than willing to leach off of others, and will be the first angry at how useless unions are if the negotiations change.

Crypto companies lying about their customers? Yep, that happens. The NYTimes just taking the word of said crypto companies? That also happens.

The article in question starts:

Helium is often heralded as one of the largest success stories in the Web3 space, even landing a coveted article in The New York Times earlier this year. Since 2019, the decentralized wireless network service, which bills itself as a peer-to-peer network for the Internet of Things, has touted rideshare company Lime as one of its marquee clients, claiming the company uses its service to geolocate rentable escooters. There are numerous mentions of this partnership on its website, along with the presence of Lime’s company logo, and in press coverage with various news outlets.

There’s just one problem: That partnership never really existed.

So much of crypto is either a pipe dream or goes up in smoke when looked at closely.

For all of you guitarish people here, I have a question. Today, for some reason, I’m getting buzzing from my amp with my bass plugged in, that dampens if I am touching the strings. Any idea what might be going on? I didn’t have this yesterday.

re: #103 Belafon

If, as you suggest, it’s something that just came up, the first thing I’d check is cables. I’ve always had problems with the way 1/4” jacks run their grounds. Outside of that, I’m neither an electrician nor a guitarist, so I’ll leave the deeper insights to people with more experience.

re: #103 Belafon

First thing is to try a different cable between the amp and bass.

If that doesn’t resolve the problem make sure the cable is fully seated at both ends, then wiggle the cable at the guitar jack then at the amp jack (if that resolves it, there is a problem with that jack).

There’s good news at the Cheeckako Cabin. Our new replacement dishwasher has arrived and was installed today. It’s a Bosch 500 model. Only took 7 months from ordering at the local Home Depot to arriving at the cabin.

We got so tired of hand washing dishes that we converted to paper plates a couple of months ago.

With that much money, I would definitely pay someone else to watch it for me, but, instead of a standard accountant, I would look for someone to help me spend it on worthwhile things.

Same here. Would never trust myself to handle anywhere near that kind of moolah, and would likely lose my marbles in short order if I were to try.
That said, once essentials are handled and I need to decide what to do with the rest, I figure several million dollars worth of my kind of political ads would do wonders to derail certain GOP candidate campaigns, and would consider that money well spent.

If I win? Okay, so $471 million after taxes.

Step 1: put 400 million into a quickly established tax-free charitable foundation… that gets me a $160 million income tax refund next year. Meanwhile, the $71 million, Imma call a real estate broker. I want a nice home with nice grounds in the place where I live, and another one in a place that I visit frequently, and a plane to take me between them. And staff, of course, for both homes. And I’ll need a couple of researchers to work for my foundation and present me with lists every month of worthwhile places to direct donations.

Next year, with my $160 million tax refund… well, $100 million of that goes into the foundation. A million each to everyone in the extended family, and a dozen or so friends who’ve made my life more pleasant over the years. Now I’m going to plan some nice vacations. I’ve always wanted to visit Madagascar, for instance. I want to see elephants and zebras and giraffes. And the Galapagos. And some tropical islands with expensive luxury accomodations.

And maybe I’ll get a horse. Two horses; one that I can ride, one that I’ll enter in races. And I need a Kentucky Derby hat.
