Abe’s assassin has made it clear that his goal was to strike at the Unification Church in Japan, and he appears to have succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. After a few days of dithering around, finally a sports outlet dropped the name of the organization the assassin had a grudge against. Then the Japanese press decided to report what it already knew, which was that the UC and the Liberal Democratic Party (Abe’s party and mostly in control of Japan since the end of WWII) were/are basically in bed together. Media outlets are now asking sharp questions about politicians’ activities. What I’ve read is that there were attempts in 1995 by a group of lawyers who have filed suits against the UC to get “contributions” back to have the government take a closer look at the UC, but they were downplayed or ignored. And that’s because the LDP was in bed with the UC. So, unlike other cults / new religions in Japan that had a bad time post 1995 even if they weren’t Aum, UC was allowed to continue to flourish. In fact, UC isn’t known as UC in Japan anymore. Its official name is now “Family Federation for World Peace and Unification”. There is some question as to which politician(s) gave their approval for the name change. (ETA: Seriously, that’s a question being asked.)
ETA2: Oddly enough, even though the assassin is in awful trouble and will at some point years down the road be hanged by the Japanese government, there is some sympathy being shown him by the average Japanese as the contours of the LDP’s involvement with the UC become clearer.

And that’s because the LDP was in bed with the UC. So, unlike other cults / new religions in Japan that had a bad time post 1995 even if they weren’t Aum, UC was allowed to continue to flourish. In fact, UC isn’t known as UC in Japan anymore. Its official name is now “Family Federation for World Peace and Unification”. There is some question as to which politician(s) gave their approval for the name change.

I think that’s what gave rise to Soka Gakkai. Nichiren were big supporters of Imperial Japan’s ambitions in Asia, so they had to reset after the war. I don’t know much except that they use familiar tactics—shades of Scientology—of recruiting celebrities to become members and targeting those isolated from society (but the same can be said of Tenrikyō, Pure Liberty religion, etc., etc.).

Soon other BCA temples were also conducting same-sex marriages, and by the time of my research into the subject in the early 2010s, I couldn’t find a single minister in the scores of BCA temples who was unwilling to preside over same-sex weddings. Indeed, BCA ministers had already performed marriages for gay and lesbian couples, bisexuals, transgender people, and polyamorous groups. Many of these were interracial marriages, or carried out for non-Buddhists who had nowhere else to go, though most were for members of local BCA temples.

They’re a pretty progressive bunch over at the BCA. They’re the only religious group I’ve ever donated money to (granted, it was only $25 during a fundraising event for Oregon Buddhist Temple back in the 1990s to refinish the pews and some restoration work for the main altar).

A friend of mine hangs out with the Krishas in London, she says she likes the community and helps with their food services and sometimes gets to attend a retreat at George Harrison’s estate.
