OMG—not what I needed today. Bill Russell is/was one of my true heroes. Loved him on and off the court. Grew up in MA during the Celtic dynasty days and Bill was the glue that held everything together. Hall of Fame twice. Also wrote some great books and had a fun talk show.

He stood up for what he believed in, even when they had FBI files on him for “not signing autographs for white children.”

KC Jones died in 2020.
Tommy Heinsohm died in 2020.
Sam Jones died in 2021.
And now Bill Russell.

RIP to one of the all-time greats.

Do the Serbs think Russia is actually winning in Ukraine?

While I am a pessimist and think Putin will never accept defeat, and he will continue to throw away Russian soldiers’ lives, no one can look at Ukraine from the outside and think this is some sort of success for Russia.

A cool bit of news from the world of archeology:

A temple dating back 4,500 years has been uncovered by archeologists in Egypt.

The remnants of the mud-brick building are believed to be one of the lost ‘sun temples’ dating back to the Fifth Dynasty of ancient Egypt (2465 to 2323 BC).

They were found under the temple of King Nyuserre in the Abusir region, south of Cairo.

The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism announced the thrilling new find on Instagram on Saturday.

‘The joint Italian-Polish archaeological mission, working at the temple of King Niussere in Abu Ghorab, north of Abu Sir, discovered the remains of a mud-brick building below the temple,’ a statement said.

We’re okay here now. The last fire in the same area did burn into my county but was put out when it got within twenty miles from my home.

Carter Canyon is about fifty miles west, and across the river.

The fire started at four different points yesterday and merged.

Mandatory evacuations underway at Carter Canyon fire south of Gering (KSID-AM, Sidney, Nebr.)

By Saturday night, over 1,000 acres had been estimated to have been burned at one of the start sites. The fire was zero percent contained. The majority of the Canyon Wildlife Management Area, and at least one home, have burned.

Authorities enforced mandatory evacuations on Carter Canyon Road, south of Summit Road to County Road 17, at approximately 9:40 p.m. Saturday.

A smoke plume from the fire could be seen as far away as Sidney. The National Weather Service office in Cheyenne says northwest winds will initially bring smoke south-southeast Sunday, but winds will shift to more east, bringing smoke closer to Scottsbluff and the central/northern parts of the Panhandle Sunday night. The NWS says to be mindful of local poor air quality and stay indoors if sensitive to smoke.

It is hard to express how much Bill Russell meant to basketball, sports, in general, and to civil rights and society as a whole. I’m fortunate to have seen him play on TV for those exquisite Celtics teams. He could be crusty at times but he earned that right. Georgette has moved into the central Pacific and weakened further, to a tropical depression. The storm is expected to make a sharp right turn to the north, then south-by-west again Thursday morning. By Friday, the National Hurricane Center expects it to become post-tropical.

The book “Escort Pilot” has a summary of a typical day of Walter J. Konantz, flying P-51’s with the 338th Ftr Sqrn, 55th Fighter Group, out of Wormingford, England.

Got up at 0500, took off at 0800, flew an escort mission for B-17’s to Berlin. He said that they would detail one of the newer pilots to leave the formation and carefully fly up to the B-17’s and find the unit with the correct markings on the tail to make sure they had the correct bombers to escort (this seems rather unsophisticated, but I guess it worked). After the bombers hit the target, and heading back home at 1135, they leave the bombers a the Holland border, drop their tanks when they are empty, and go down to strafe, They shoot up a train. They spot three BF-109’s and shoot them down and see some B-17’s limping along on three engines and escort them back to England. On they way back, they eat lunch, consisting of 2 or 3 candy bars.

They arrive at home base with maybe 15 gallons of fuel left and land, forgoing victory rolls due to the low fuel state. They debrief, sack out until supper at 1730, and hit the sack at 2130.

At 2140 hours there is a PA announcement that the base is under Red Alert and to seek shelter. This means that air launched V-1’s will be flying overhead toward London. They all load their .45 automatics and go stand atop the bomb shelter. If a V-1 comes overhead they shoot at it, inevitably without results. Finally they go back to bed in the barracks and at about 0200 they hear the engine on one quit and they take cover under the covers. It hits about a mile away and the blast blows open the doors. They close the doors and go back to sleep.

At 0500 they are awoken for another mission….

Imagine getting up to go shoot at V-1’s! Sounds like fun, but…

I saw of video of her singing this song backed by Joe Bonomassa. I listened with my mouth hanging open the entire time. My god, what a set of pipes she has. Close your eyes and you’d swear Janis Joplin was still alive. It was such a mournful song about losing someone, I had tears in my eyes. The last time Serbia mixed it up with NATO, it didn’t end well for them. (I didn’t particularly enjoy sailing up-and-down the Adriatic Sea aboard USS America when we were supposed to be in the Caribbean Sea on a training mission though.)

My patient’s wife had just one question: Was her husband dying?

She knew that he was still on the ventilator even after all these weeks, his lungs too sick and his body too weak to breathe on his own. That he still needed a continuous dialysis machine to do the work of his kidneys. That he had yet to wake up in any meaningful way, though his brain scans showed nothing amiss. That it had been more than 50 days since he entered the hospital and we needed to talk about what would come next.

But when she stood there at the bedside, her husband looked much the same to her as he had a week ago, much the same as he might look next week if we continued to push forward. And she had to ask: Why did we need to have this conversation today? Was her husband dying?

You might think this is an easy question to answer. And yet here in the intensive care unit, it is not. Our medicines and machines extend the lives of patients who would otherwise have died. But what happens when it becomes clear that a patient is not actively dying, but not getting better either? How do doctors and family members navigate death when it is not imminent and unavoidable, but is instead a decision?

I continue to believe that the vast majority of Democrats still remembers what happened in 2000, and will be no more likely to vote third party than they have been in every election since that one. Maybe they cam siphon off some repugs (can’t vote repug because tfg or abortion, can’t bring themselves to vote Democrat).

As the fire continues to burn south of Gering, my village’s fire department is being held in reserve in case another fire breaks out somewhere around here. The other nearby fire departments (Bridgeport and Bayard in my county, and Dalton in Cheyenne County) have been dispatched to the prairie fire.
