Tom Waits - “The Fall of Troy” (Rare)

Music • Views: 21,078

YouTube

I’ve had this song in my library for years, since I ripped it from a CD somebody gave me long ago and added it to iTunes. Tom Waits has written so many great songs, but for me, this will always be one of his best.

There’s a different version of this on “Bawlers” with a full band and production and all that, but this one with Tom accompanying himself on piano stands alone.

We watched the Crimes of Grindelwald last night, and all wiping Grindelwald’s sentence did was allow him to rig the election, and nearly start the war between wizards and muggles. It was pretty obvious the script was drawing heavily from Hitler, but then so does Trump.

Because Colorado US Representative Doug Lamborn, like all conservatives, lies.

It is up to the families whether to remove those who fell in battle, not Doug Lamborn. Moreover, that identification process has been going on for years, so he lied about that too.

Out here in the west of Nebraska we have the highest gasoline prices in the state. (Greyed-out counties have no gas stations.) My county falls in the highest category. It’s fortunate I’m one of about three people in my county who owns a car rather than a massive SUV or pickup.

In 2011, the SBA List ran attack ads against a Democratic representative claiming the ACA uses federal money for abortion, to which in response, he appealed to the Ohio Election Commission to have them remove the ads as lies.

SBA then tried to bring the case to federal court against the OEC, with the support of the ACLU, arguing the the Ohio law was vague, they were only stating an opinion, and the effect of the Ohio law was to suppress speech which was an opinion.

After burning up thousands of dollars of donor money both from SBA List and the ACLU, the judge threw the case out, arguing it was not an “opinion,” since the SBA’s own Website stated it was a “fact.”

Yang is a classic example of someone who is “successful” (as some see it) and so thinks his answers to anything have some special truth and magical power.

Reality is Yang is just egotistical.

Politics is and always has been an ugly business.

Because people are often not nice.

Indeed, humans are often aggressive and spiteful.

Good leaders accept the reality of the human condition, and still find ways to address issues without burning the whole thing down.

Yang, like Trump, wants to burn the whole thing down.

“Yes, we all hate the two-party system”

Citation needed.

A. A lot of people benefit over both-sidesing shit, and need a 2 party system to do that.

B. Unless and until there’s a massive structure change in the form of the US government (getting rid of everything that was designed to keep the rural and southern states from bailing so the whole thing didn’t collapse in the 1800s for starters), any 3rd party will be by and for crazy people or a ratfucking scheme intended to keep the minority political views in power, so no thanks.

11 years ago today. More true than ever. Just look at Gohmert.

What is the “poli-drawl?” That’s my term for the absurdly exaggerated drawl affected by certain Texas politicians in a mistaken effort to sound like the little people. This is a type of “plain Folks” propaganda, and it shows just how cynical and how far out of touch they are with the constituents. We natives speak with a drawl, all right, but we do not sound like a vaudeville parody of a semi-literate hick. Quite a few of our politicians do, at least in public. To paraphrase FDR, they want us to think they are simple bare-foot millionaire lawyers and tycoons.

I inherited me mother’s kitchen, which has at least one of everything, but she died before the Instant Pot craze hit. I live alone, and need to lose weight as long as I live. So I go on Amazon to get one, and there are 7500 different forms of it. 7 in 1, 9 in 1, 11 in 1, duo, vortex, different sizes, yogurt makers, slow cookers, air fryers, wi-fi, star wars duo, Zest plus, inner pots, Nova, MasterChef, Ninja, yadda yadda. Not to mention pages of accessories: must haves!!

All I want is something I can use as an Instant Pot, and maybe cook rice? Help?

Local Child Molester, Treated Gently by Lancaster County Judge, Goes on to Attend Insurrection (Seeing Red Nebraska, July 31, 2022)

Because the child’s mother was a Jehovah’s Witness as well, she didn’t want him to go to jail. For child sexual molestation he was given probation and seventy-two hours community service.

In 2015, Lincoln resident Gavin Crowl, then 24, was convicted of groping a 10- or 11-year old girl in 2011, when he was 19. The Lincoln Journal Star reported that the victim testified that Crowl gave her gifts of My Little Pony toys and asked her to marry him when she grew up. However, Crowl’s attorney framed the groping as innocent and claimed Crowl had “read a manual on massage” and was “trying to massage the girl’s chest” but “didn’t really know what he was doing and stopped.” Oh, of course-those massage manuals! They’re worse than Ikea instructions-first you find the hex wrench, then right when you line up shelf B with bracket J there you are, groping a child.

Court documents show that elders at Crowl’s church-The Belmont Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Lincoln-had “investigated” the abuse claim in 2013, just to see if Crowl was in need of spiritual assistance. According to the documents, one of the church elders, James Newman, claimed that Crowl had denied touching the little girl’s breasts but admitted to massaging her and kissing her. The church had concluded this was no biggie, though-after a 30-minute conversation with Crowl and without talking to the victim, they decided there was no need to report it to authorities.

This will be either a bad week on abortion news, with Indiana and WV poised to ban abortion, or extremely bad news, if the forced birthers lies about the Kansas referendum succeed in tricking voters into allowing the legislature to ban abortion.

Too bad women-supporting Catholics won’t walk away from their churches and instead fund this stuff.

It’s basically what the sequel to Atlas Shrugged would be: once people figure out that Galt’s Gulch exists, they will find it and there will be no way the “Titans of Industry” will be able to keep them out.

It’s the same problem with people wondering around with guns slung across their backs. Unless you’re in a constant ready to shoot pose, your gun doesn’t offer you protection, it makes you a target.

But Mr. Morgan’s bitterest ire from his time in politics was reserved for his fellow Republicans. He blamed them for his negative press coverage, complained that the party did little to support his legislative proposals and publicly blasted Republican leaders who were implicated in scandal. When Mr. Morgan ran for re-election, another Republican challenged him in the primary, and won.

The whole experience convinced Mr. Morgan that he was the target of a corrupt power structure. Lauding the “patriots” of QAnon in Facebook posts, he mounted a quixotic primary campaign against Senator Mitch McConnell, whom he condemned as a “deep-state traitor.” When the primary was over, Mr. Morgan was done with Kentucky.

(CNN)Gun owners allowed to carry handguns without permits or training. Parents of transgender children facing investigation by state officials. Women forced to drive hours out-of-state to access abortion.
This is Texas now: While the Lone Star State has long been a bastion of Republican politics, new laws and policies have taken Texas further to the right in recent years than it has been in decades.
Elected officials and political observers in the state say a major factor in the transformation can be traced back to West Texas. Two billionaire oil and fracking magnates from the region, Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks, have quietly bankrolled some of Texas’ most far-right political candidates — helping reshape the state’s Republican Party in their worldview.

Over the last decade, Dunn and his wife, Terri, have contributed more than $18 million to state candidates and political action committees, while Wilks and his wife, Jo Ann, have given more than $11 million, putting them among the top donors in the state.

I don’t put much stock in articles that talk about subjective things like physical attractiveness, but I have actually wondered, in the back of my mind, if the stress of being a crazy person might put undue wear and tear on someone’s physical features. It stands to reason that overworking the brain in fever dreams might reduce the body’s capacity to maintain itself.

The only thing resembling a “slush fund” that Akiva found in the bill was that the bill appropriates $500M in new funding for the coverage and the resources to distribute said coverage, including notifying vets of their potential benefits. And even that was subject to a strict review process. Hardly a “slush fund”. It’s literally just Republicans making something up out of whole cloth to appear fiscally responsible as a cover for the fact that they’re playing partisan politics with veterans’ health care.

Nah, it’s not even that contrived BS, it’s just the GQP doing what they do best: Screwing up their faces as they mutter that the grapes were probably sour anyway. This is a purely juvenile play being conducted as “protest” over the Manchin-Schumer agreement being announced only after the CHIP bill got a vote. Trust me, if Sinema announced tomorrow that she would vote against the reconciliation bill and it failed, the “slush fund” would magically disappear and they’d rush to get a vote on this bill before November.

I think we all know that, but they’re using this flimflam as a cover so that their low-information voters - or their intentionally evil voters - have a talking point to fall back on when challenged. Because the effort required to debunk a lie is so much greater than the effort required to concoct and promulgate the lie itself, and because the liars will refuse to be convinced no matter the evidence, the truth is on the back foot even before the debate starts.

She intended that she would be buried at a golf course? I wonder about that.

Trump gains tax benefits from using a portion of his golf business as a cemetery. The state division of taxation will need to look at the tax benefits for this more closely - Trump is more than likely to try and claim tax breaks on all of the land of his golf business, when it’s likely only to apply to the parcel where the cemetery is located.

It’s always an angle and a grift. In death, he’s still using and abusing Ivana.

I know with pressure food can be cooked a lot faster. But what about something like a pinto bean? In my experience I can get them soft in 90 minutes. But they seem to taste better if I cook them low and slow. Starch conversion?

The better taste of pintos cooked low and slow is due to the anticipation factor. Proven fact!

My tomatoes shit the bed this year. Thinking about yanking them out and starting new ones. Guessing I needed to put new soil in the greenhouse planters. My tomatillos are doing well though. Lots of little lanterns. Hoping they fill with juicy fruits.

Impeachment is a purely political method of dealing with crimes by the Executive or Judicial branch.

Democrats did advance to impeachment within days of 1/6. McConnell delayed the Senate trial and covered up Trump crimes in the process. He gave cover to the GOP and acted as if this was all normal stuff.

McCarthy is a hack (and that can apply to any of them - Kevin or Andrew).

Conceding is not part of the process

From “Phoenix New Times” (not sure about it, but the story checks):

State Representative Mark Finchem served as “Arizona Coordinator” for the Coalition of Western States, a group that supported the infamous armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon in 2016.

He’s also recently communicated with individuals who were involved with the group, new emails show.

The Coalition of Western States (COWS) describes itself as a group of elected legislators and “grass roots leaders” in the Western United States “dedicated to stopping federal overreach” and the “bureaucratic terrorism” of the Bureau of Land Management, according to a December 2015 news release from the organization. The group publicly backed the Hammond family of Oregon ranchers, whose dispute with the federal government over public land management inspired the armed militia occupation of the Oregon wildlife refuge. Some members of COWS met with the militia members and fed them information.

The 2015 news release mentions Finchem, a Republican from Oro Valley, as an “Arizona Coordinator” alongside other controversial far-right politicians from Western states, like Idaho State Representative Heather Scott and Washington State Representative Matt Shea. In 2019, investigators hired by the Washington House of Representatives concluded that Shea had engaged in “domestic terrorism” during his involvement in the Oregon militia stand-off and “promoted” three “armed conflicts of political violence against the United States.”

True, but its a good tradition in which a candidate lets his supporters know the election is over and the peaceful transfer of power shall proceed. Joe Rogan: Jeffrey Epstein Was a CIA or Mossad Agent Trying to Compromise High Level Assets

Joe is trying to win back his Maga base.

I didn’t know he lost them. Was it something specific or did the MAGAs simply move on to the next white-man grievance celebrity?

Sorry, I couldn’t see the man’s face in the first photo. Yeah, she took quite a turn.

20 years can do that to you. Also the wrong lighting/the wrong makeup/wrong pose/wrong angle etc. I have many pictures within days of each other (or sometimes minutes?) where my appearance takes a dramatic turn for the better or worse!

Friend of mine (actual professional chef) put a new twist on lemon roasted chicken. I like the placement of the lemon halves.

Not 1980 really; Reagan’s victory was a sweeping landslide, which would still have been the case even if all Anderson’s votes had gone to Carter.

You left 2016 out of your list… Jill Stein’s votes in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania was more than what Trump won by.

And 1992 may, or may not have, changed the outcome. It’s unclear how many votes Perot took from each party.

They should revoke her GED

Did we know if she actually took the GED herself or was there a ringer who took it for her?
