I think I’m about to abandon the platform. I am triple checking posts after I got fragged a couple weeks ago (and I haven’t figured out what I did to trip the bot), but if it’s a TOS violation

E-biker Ostracized by a Community He Wasn’t Even Aware Existed

“Wow, oh really? Ha. **** ‘em”.

E-biking Australian Ken Oath was taught this week what the mountain bike community was, before he was then told he was excluded from it. Oath, who resides in the UK, had previously no notion of the wider cultural significance of bicycle riding and always thought tailgate pads were in case you wanted to have a sandwich and a nice sit down.

“It turns out” he tells us, “Mountain biking is a whole thing! I was oblivious. People kept talking to me about access rights. I thought it was a case of mistaken identity. It turns out, flow trails are meant to be ridden downhill, too! Can you believe it?”

re: #54 Captain Ron

I saw reports of that earlier today; it’s likely due to individuals who had the oral polio vaccine, which is not administered in the US. The polio case that did occur was likely the result of an exposure to someone who had taken the oral vaccine. That can narrow down the exposures and the NYS DOH should be able to do sufficient contact tracing here to prevent an outbreak of cases. Rockland does have a lower vaccination rate than the state average.

Rockland County currently has a polio vaccination rate of 60.5% among two year-olds compared to the statewide average of 79.1%

So, to follow on the AQ line of succession, via Bill Roggio:

Finally, the UN report provided insight on Al Qaeda’s line of succession. Saif al Adel, the longtime Al Qaeda leader and veteran, is second behind Zawahiri. Next in line are Abdal-Rahman al-Maghrebi, Yazid Mebrak, the emir of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, and Ahmed Diriye, the leader of Shabaab, which is Al Qaeda’s branch in East Africa.

Al Adel has long been a top leader in Al Qaeda, and he is known to have sheltered in Iran along with other key terrorist leaders. He is now also believed to be inside Afghanistan.

Maghrebi, a native Moroccan, is Zawahiri’s son-in-law, and has served in a number of senior roles within Al Qaeda. The State Department has described him as the “longtime director” of As Sahab, Al Qaeda’s central media arm and the “head” of the group’s “External Communications Office,” where he “coordinates activities with” Al Qaeda’s “affiliates.” Maghrebi has also been Al Qaeda’s “general manager in Afghanistan and Pakistan since 2012,” a key role as top Al Qaeda leaders shelter in the region.

The presence of Mebrak and Diriye in the chain of succession should come as no surprise. Al Qaeda began diversifying its leadership and giving key leadership roles to its branch leaders as the U.S. stepped up its targeted killing of top Al Qaeda leaders in Afghanistan and Pakistan beginning in the mid-2000s.

It really did make me cry. I’m now trying to figure out what was the most offensive part of the book. Was it:

* the HS kids beating up on each other?
* the cussing? (There was a lot of that.)
* the public display of affection leading to some sexual groping?
* drug dealing by some students?

Or was it:

* Adults looking bad?
* Parents looking bad?
* The critiques of religious fanaticism?
* The positive view of LGBTQIA people?
* Maybe even some light student rebellion—we wouldn’t want kids to get ideas?

I dunno, but I sure want to know what it was about this book that really annoyed the Alpine School District.

AI-Powered ‘Genderify’ Platform Shut Down After Bias-Based Backlash
In July, the AI-powered tool Genderify — designed to identify a person’s gender by analyzing their name, username or email address — was shut down just a week after launch. Genderify creator Arevik Gasparyan pitched the platform as a “unique solution that’s the only one of its kind available in the market,” where businesses could “obtain data that will help you with analytics, enhancing your customer data, segmenting your marketing database, demographic statistics…”

It was the only one of its kind available in the market for a reason. A Genderify backlash rapidly spread on social media, alleging built-in biases. Ali Alkhatib, a research fellow at the Center for Applied Data Ethics, tweeted that when he typed in the word “professor,” Genderify predicted a 98.4 percent probability for males. Meanwhile, “stupid” returned a 61.7 percent female prediction. In other cases, adding a “Dr” prefix to frequently-used female names resulted in male-skewed assessments.

Same here. I told someone “oh go play in traffic” like that’s real and like anyone of my generation hasn’t heard that. Banhammered.

This is why I tell people to put a sock in it and call them a wobbly carrot. Nobody’s going to stuff a sock in their mouth and what the hell is a wobbly carrot?

A Wobbly Carrot is a red headed member of the IWW back in 1912.

I’m not sure what the word I’m looking for for this week’s Oglaf, but it’s both funny and…disturbing isn’t the right word, maybe fitting for the times or something:

Ummm…this is rather akin to the very real teaching in some churches that you can lose your healing if you don’t go to church, stop paying your tithing, lose faith etc., that is taught in so many “Word of Faith” churches. Kenneth Copeland is a big proponent of this.

“FO and take a dirt nap” and variants is one I have used on more than one occasion.

When I’m on my bike, I often unmask. I have to have the presence of mind to stick to ‘idiot’, which is hard to lipread and can be said with a smile, and lay off the ‘stupid fucking asshole’ which seems more easily understood.

Obama got bin-Laden.
Biden got al-Zawahiri.
Jared got $2bn from Saudi Prince Bonesaw.
Trump got a Prince Bonesaw-funded golf tournament.
Democrats: Finishing the jobs Republicans refuse to do.

The Trump administration also did bring an end to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State Group.

Reading, looking at those beautiful photos and bawling. It’s really sad that we are losing the actors and actresses from the original Star Trek series. That show made such a huge impact on our culture. Glad to see George still so active and vocal.
