I flew balls-60 when I was at K. I. Sawyer AFB in the early 80’s.

And I’m for the rack. Night all, sweet dreams.

Word is, Alex is gonna be on the stand tomorrow after lunch in Austin.

It truly is amazing to have someone snarl at you for being “entitled” when they’re the ones demanding special treatment. Doubly so when they’re demanding you do something that will inconvenience someone else because they don’t want to be inconvenienced.

Oh, and small tip from a service industry employee: You’ll get further with us by being friendly and reasonable than you will by screaming “I’M GONNA MAKE A COMPLAINT!”

There’s only two categories of SI employees who quake at such threats: Rookies who don’t know better and try-hards who are bucking for a promotion. If you’ve reached that point of emotional deadness where you realize you’re not getting promoted short of everybody above you suddenly dropping dead all at once, but your boss can’t afford to fire you, then the only thing you “fear” is getting a lecture and maybe a write-up.

The Army has a drone flying over the American Southwest that refuses to die

By all accounts the Zephyr should be dead. There’s no reason the drone should still be flying above the American Southwest after more than a month in the skies. But the Zephyr doesn’t seem ready to die. It’s now been in the air for 47 days. And there’s no indication that the Army intends to bring it down yet.

I like how the article notes that the Army’s plans for this record-breaking drone after this flight (eventually) ends is to strap a weapon to it and send it out over the Pacific Ocean for more tests. Kinder, greener methods of turning our enemies into pink paste.

They would make a great platform for rural internet, radio, comms, and cell service.

There was a proposal made ages ago by Burt Rutan to build a fleet of his unique ultralight aircraft to basically act as airborne internet servers. Whole idea was supposed to be that they’d carry pods with equipment that would allow persons in rural locations to access wireless internet without the costs and delays of satellite internet.

Of course, such a project would be astronomically expensive to offer 24/7/365 coverage over a respectable area, and the only way it would have ever gone anywhere was with a government subsidy.

What continues to amaze me is not simply that the people in charge of Russia still believe they can “win” this war, but that doing so will somehow wipe out all the nasty shit they’ve done to achieve it. That the rest of the world will have to just grumble and accept all the war crimes happening in plain view.

Dr Lizardo  Aug 2, 2022 • 2:00:17am

Belgium stepping up its game:

In Belgium, 50.5 billion euros in funds belonging to people, companies and other legal entities against which financial sanctions have been imposed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine have been frozen. That is a considerably higher amount than was previously known. The last time our country published figures on this, in April, it was 3.5 billion euros or almost 15 times less. This was confirmed by Francis Adyns, the spokesman for the federal public service Finance, with whom the Treasury monitors the correct application of the sanctions in our country.

The EUR 50.5 billion in frozen funds include all kinds of financial assets such as cash and stocks, which are located in our country and which are owned by the 1,229 individuals and 110 other entities - such as Russian politicians, oligarchs, banks and corporations - who have imposed financial sanctions. were imposed. Some have been sanctioned since Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula, but most were introduced after the invasion of Ukraine in February.

The more than 50 billion euros that Belgium has frozen is a surprisingly high amount. Three weeks ago, European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders announced that at that time EUR 13.8 billion in assets had been frozen across the European Union. Reynders then indicated that more than €12 billion had been frozen by five member states, without specifying which countries they were. But in our country the amount is now significantly higher.

In addition, as an important international financial hub, our country, with institutions such as the securities giant Euroclear in Brussels, has blocked 217.1 billion euros in transactions that have been banned since the war in Ukraine.

I keep seeing Republicans saying “13-year-olds do phenomenal” as mothers, and demanding 10-year-olds carry their rapist’s baby, but WE’RE the groomers?!?

A 13-year-old who was not old enough to give legal consent is forced to live with a situation imposed on her by a rapist.

They really do not think through the details and nuances, do they?

They don’t care. Remember, everything is black and white in their world; and abortion, in any form, is firmly in the black. It’s become part of their moral code, which they have to enforce at any cost - to “save lives” by forcing girls and women to give birth to as many live babies as physically possible, even if it kills the mother, because the mother had her chance to live her life, but her baby needs to survive to have the same chance. (This is why they try to distract from ectopic pregnancies, or lie about the ability to reimplant them; they don’t want to consider the possibility that an unborn baby might not be a viable life.)

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. GOP who has been claiming that Biden has weakened military and wokeness has caused the US to fall flat on its face now left to deal with fact that Biden ordered drone strike against Zawahiri while he was recovering from covid and intel community and military got him; that’s despite fact that Trump had been briefed about Zawahiri in the past, but refused to drone strike him because he didn’t know who he was and thought he could go after others - not the leader who was intimately involved in the operational planning of 9/11 and other terror strikes against the US.

Trump weakened the US.

Trump undermined US natsec.

Trump’s the one who is compromised.

Trump’s the one who is taking Saudi money to prop up his businesses - Jared too.

But every word out of a GOPer’s mouth these day is projecting all of this on Biden - that he’s weak, woke, and undermining US natsec, compromised, and complicit.

It’s the Trump tell.

A furious Beijing today warned US politicians they will ‘come to no good end’ if they ‘play with fire’ over Taiwan as video emerged purportedly showing tanks lined up on beaches opposite the island.

Chilling footage shared on Chinese social network Weibo appears to show amphibious tanks on the coast of Fujian along the Taiwan Strait. Further footage shows military equipment on the move in the city of Xiamen.

The unverified videos emerged amid soaring tensions between China and US with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expected to touch down in Taipei at 2.20pm GMT today.

Pelosi would be the highest-ranking U.S. elected official to visit Taiwan since 1997. Her jet left the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday morning, according to flight-tracking website Flightradar24 and witnesses.

I said this yesterday: I know 7 years seems a little disappointing compared to the 15 years prosecutors were asking for, and this definitely isn’t “throwing the book” at him, but this is still hard time. Dude’s definitely getting punished. If I was looking at 7 years in Club Fed, I’d still be plenty discouraged about the consequences of my life choices.

7 years in the slammer is nothing to sneeze at. It should have been twice that. We could say that of every person who was sentenced re: 1/6. All of the sentences should have been harsher. But this is where we are. And the big fish are still awaiting indictments and prosecutions while the seditious coconspirators in Oath Keepers and 3percenters are awaiting their trials or cutting deals.

It’s important to remember that these people expected to get ZERO CONSEQUENCES for their actions. They thought that what they were doing was legal; they thought they would get a pardon from President Trump if they were criming; they thought that the justice system wouldn’t punish them harshly because many of them are first-time offenders, white, and moderately affluent. While I am disappointed that the punishments as a whole aren’t more harsh, I also can’t complain as long as the punishments keep coming.

That’s my thought, as well. I know us laypeople make fun of the whole diplomatic process, with their strongly worded letters, kicking out diplomats, and other actions that seem to amount to nothing more than silly charades. The thing is that these things are the equivalent of non-violent warfare in the diplomatic realm, and losing the diplomatic war (in the sense of reaching the point of severing diplomatic relations) often leads to the start of an actual violent war. It’s important to pay attention to those strongly worded letters, lest we end up with another Pearl Harbor.

Should have been a better shot, got him in the head.

An elderly convenience store owner in California is being hailed as a hero after he shot at a would-be robber who ran out of the store screaming that his arm was “shot off.”

Shocking surveillance footage from Norco Market & Liquor in the 2800 block of Clark Avenue in Norco, Calif., showed a masked assailant entering the business at about 2:47 a.m. with an AR-15-style rifle pointed at the 80-year-old store owner.

The suspect yelled, “Freeze, hands in the air,” but within seconds, the quick-thinking store owner pulled out a shotgun from under the counter and immediately shot once at the robber, hitting him in the arm.

Video footage further showed another man getting out of a black BMW SUV, but he stopped and got back into the vehicle once he saw the first suspect run out of the store repeatedly screaming, “He shot my arm off!”

Well it looks like we are still well on our way towards Radical Christian Fascism.

yahoo.com

Republicans are poised to take Congress this fall according to initial polling, this despite lower gas prices and a stock market on the rebound. Democrats will always get blamed for everything, even if there are 0 Democrats left in government. That’s just the way a fascist country operates with cranks like the Murdochs and all the other billionaire crazy loons in control.

The incoming Republican nightmare also means the door is quickly shutting closed on this country being any sort of actual democracy at all. We are already a Hybrid Regime, an emerging autocracy with only a thin veil of democracy left as a veneer. When Republicans take control by any means necessary there will be no more real elections, to the point where countries in the EU classify the US as a whole as no longer a democracy and even certain individual states as worldwide pariah entities.

Start preparing now for internet workarounds like those individuals in China and Russia must do for outside information. A domestic firewall will be coming beholden to White Radical Christian dogma and corporations and major media will be fully on board for “access” reasons. And election boards will be free to deny any candidates not on the approved Republican ticket, similar to how Iran elections operate. Prepare now for outside information and communication and stay safe.

Laughing? It can’t happen? Just a year ago Roe- Vs. Wade would have been a political hand grenade no Republican wanted to actually repeal. Now they have and are preparing to win this election.

If their nukes even work; nuclear weapons maintenance is expensive, and that money was probably stolen by Russia’s generals. But even if they do work, the Russians aren’t stupid. They know they would die in a nuclear war as well. Over the decades, the superpowers have fought in numerous wars in which one was providing military aid to the enemy of the other; none of those went nuclear.

Look, they are going to just make sure that enough votes are disqualified in enough states in 2024 to ensure that no candidate can claim an EC majority, throwing the Presidential election to the state delegations, whereupon the GOP will prevail.

My optimism has deserted me to the point that I see this as all but inevitable.

Then it will be up to us to tell them they can’t impose Trump or DeSantis on us by not counting our votes. Other countries have deposed corrupt regimes through general strikes and mass protest; we can as well.

Ironically, the decision in Dobbs gave me hope that with the GOP’s plans for women out in the open it will motivate Democrats to go to the polls and fight for their rights. The scenes of southern cops brutalizing protestors in the South horrified the country in the sixties and led to passage of key civil rights legislation. If the cops brutally suppress peaceful protestors it could galvanize the country to defeat the fascists. In 2025 I’ll turn 62; and I’ll be ready to lay down my life if I have to so my children can live in a democracy.

It’s hard not to be, given US media these days: constant headlines about inflation without context, drumbeats around increased violence in NYC when there’s been a slight uptick from historic lows, monkeyvirus gonna getcha, Trump all over the news for the wrong reasons, a near certainty from media that GOP will take house and senate in Nov, etc. Add to this new waves of trolling on social media and it’s a pretty toxic environment right now. re: #70 Florida Panhandler

I’ll start worrying AFTER the mid terms. Until then, this is just a bunch of conjecture on the MSMs part. A body of “news” organizations owned by those who WANT us to believe this is going to happen.

Intelligence officials briefed Trump many times about senior terrorist figures the CIA wanted to track down and kill, specifically mentioning al-Zawahiri, NBC News reported.

But two people familiar with the briefings told NBC News that Trump chose not to pursue al-Zawahiri because he didn’t recognize his name, and instead suggested targeting bin Laden’s son, Hamza bin Laden.

“He would say, ‘I’ve never heard of any of these people. What about Hamza bin Laden?’” one unnamed former official told NBC News.

A Pentagon official also told the news outlet: “That was the only name he knew.”

The Department of Defense and a spokesperson for Trump did not immediately respond to Insider’s requests for comment.

Even though Bin Laden’s son was widely seen as an emerging figure in the terrorist group, he was not believed to be planning any attacks at the time, NBC News reported.

Trump had the chance to kill al-Qaeda’s leader but didn’t because he didn’t recognize the name, report says (BI)

That the rest of the world will have to just grumble and accept all the war crimes happening in plain view.

But isn’t that what has happened throughout history? Committing crimes, escaping retribution, and being celebrated for your success at forging an empire or maintaining power? It’s only if more powerful nations take you down that you can suffer consequences for your crimes.

Yes. It’s supposed to put a cap on the amount of money that goes into the VA for this new program, as well as sunset it after 10 years. I think it might also keep it as discretionary funding, meaning it has to be voted on and renewed every year.

We need embryo life insurance then. That should make the insurance companies happy. Some studies show only ~30% of conceptions reach live birth. A lot of money is going to be paid out.

*if* it ever went that way, that would be factored into the rates. they’d be sky high

Who could’ve guessed that a rightwing authoritarian movement would be in bed with anti-semites?

Feature, not a bug, at least in western PA. The conservative Catholics often have a very strong strain of anti-Semitism that goes along with the anti-brown and anti-black people strains. Says under the surface for the most part in polite company, but you see the various code words pop up now and again.

For some of my acquaintances it tracks directly to upbringing since I have met their parents back in the day and it was much more in the open in the 80s and 90s. All of which I find a bit disappointing since these people are descended from immigrants and you’d hope there would be some empathy funneling down from that.

(Aside: One thing that is interesting is that the KKK stuff really doesn’t fly in some of the coal country east of Pittsburgh. There were clashes in the 30s between the KKK and the immigrant miners since the KKK anti-immigrant rhetoric in that period included the white Irish and East Europeans since among other things they were not Protestants.)

The entire Federalist Society should be treated as a criminal organization dedicated to destroying whatever democracy may arise in this nation. Our country is not now nor has it ever been anything close to a democracy. The Constitution is definitely not a democratic document. It was written to establish and preserve the power and freedom of wealthy white male landowners and it has performed admirably at that task.

Juan Soto going to the Padres

The price was far from cheap. In return, the Nationals are getting a package from the Padres that includes left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore, outfielder Robert Hassell III, shortstop C.J. Abrams, outfielder James Wood, right-handed pitcher Jarlin Susana and another major league player, sources told ESPN.

Soto, a two-time All-Star who won this year’s Home Run Derby, would enrich the Padres with a historically talented 23-year-old hitter whose early-career peers are almost all Hall of Famers. He will benefit greatly from joining shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. and third baseman Manny Machado near the top of the Padres lineup.

The path from Soto turning down a recent 15-year, $440 million contract offer from the Nationals to agreeing to a deal with the Padres was quick and linear. The Nationals did not want to raise their offer. San Diego, Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals matched up best with Washington’s desire for young talent.

Highly motivated entrepreneur kills himself with booze and cocaine. It’s weird that they say that life was declared extinct.

The music entrepreneur Jamal Edwards died from a heart attack after taking cocaine and drinking alcohol, a coroner has concluded.

Edwards, a YouTube star who helped launch the careers of Ed Sheeran, Dave and Skepta, died in February aged 31.

An inquest held at the west London coroner’s court on Tuesday concluded that the cause of death was drug-related.

The assistant coroner, Ivor Collett, said there was evidence of cocaine toxicity in Edwards’ body, as well as the presence of alcohol, which probably caused his death after he returned home from performing a DJ set in Islington in the early hours of 20 February.

The coroner’s reported added: “After drinking some alcohol with a friend, his behaviour changed and became erratic and he appeared paranoid, before he collapsed and became unconscious. Attempts at resuscitation failed and life was declared extinct at 10.36.”
