Ben probably wouldn’t want to read Lysistrata
written by Aristophanes around 400+ BC

It is a comic account of a woman’s extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War between Greek city states by denying all the men of the land any sex, which was the only thing they truly and deeply desired.

some of the modern day productions are just….wow

So basically, they killed Zawahiri with two Hellfire missiles outfitted with this secretive new bladed killing technique. Basically just turns humans into chunks of organic matter. It still causes a whole lot of damage to the surroundings, though, because it’s moving really fast when it hits the target.

BING BING BING BING!
Absolute same thing with the first responders, hero’s, selfless magnificent true Patriots who showed up at Ground Zero at the WTC.
These are our hero’s.
Our brave hero’s who ran towards the flames.
They will not be forgotten
How can we thank them?
Who else would do as much?
I suggest we give them a certificate.
Can we thank them in person?
Sick?
What?
Aren’t some of them inner city?
Fat and out of shape?
Did not take care of themselves?
And now we have to do what?
Pay who?
How do we know they were not injured before they showed up?

“How do we know they were not just a victim of their own lifestyle?”

Does everyone understand just what “burn pits” are. Burn pits are 1/2 barrels of human shit that are burned to get rid of the crap. The people affected are those who are burning the barrels and sucking that shit smoke into their lungs.

They deserve every bit of care the Government can provide.

Not always. There were burn pits out at area 51 used to dispose of the toxic chemicals.
But, yes, they deserve everything we can give them.

Feds investigating burning of hazardous waste at Area 51

Federal agents are investigating allegations that hazardous wastes burned in open pits at a secret military base in Southern Nevada, lending credence to former workers’ claims that they became ill from inhaling toxic smoke.

re: #41 Michele: Out of the closet, Into the fire

Burn barrel is not burn pit.
Burn pits are just a trench dug as long and wide and deep as you CO tells you to do.
Then you gather, collect and throw into said “pit” whatever you CO says.
Then you ignite by whatever means your CO says.
Then you are told to “watch” it.
Downwind is always….
Can I get a smoke?
Oh you get the picture.
Out in Burn Barrel County bitches been blown up shoving soiled disposable diapers into a simmering burn barrel with soup cans simmering under more soiled disposables.
Can I get a ride? I need more disposable diapers…
I’ll stop…

You walk into the room with your pencil in your hand
You see somebody naked and you say, “Who is that man?”
You try so hard but you don’t understand
Just what you will say when you get home
Because something is happening here but you don’t know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

You raise up your head and you ask, “Is this where it is?”
And somebody points to you and says, “It’s his”
And you say, “What’s mine?” and somebody else says, “Well, what is?”
And you say, “Oh my God, am I here all alone?”
But something is happening and you don’t know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

You hand in your ticket and you go watch the geek
Who immediately walks up to you when he hears you speak
And says, “How does it feel to be such a freak?”
And you say, “Impossible!” as he hands you a bone
And something is happening here but you don’t know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

You have many contacts among the lumberjacks
To get you facts when someone attacks your imagination
But nobody has any respect, anyway they already expect you to all give a check
To tax-deductible charity organizations
Ah, you’ve been with the professors and they’ve all liked your looks
With great lawyers you have discussed lepers and crooks
You’ve been through all of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s books
You’re very well-read, it’s well-known
But something is happening here and you don’t know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

Well, the sword swallower, he comes up to you and then he kneels
He crosses himself and then he clicks his high heels
And without further notice, he asks you how it feels
And he says, “Here is your throat back, thanks for the loan”
And you know something is happening but you don’t know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

Now, you see this one-eyed midget shouting the word “Now”
And you say, “For what reason?” and he says, “How”
And you say, “What does this mean?” and he screams back, “You’re a cow!
Give me some milk or else go home”
And you know something’s happening but you don’t know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

Well, you walk into the room like a camel, and then you frown
You put your eyes in your pocket and your nose on the ground
There ought to be a law against you comin’ around
You should be made to wear earphones
‘Cause something is happening and you don’t know what it is
Do you, Mr. Jones?

It’s gruesome but probably not as gruesome as explosives since the various bits are not burned or scattered as widely. The local undertakers probably have a fair chance of re-assembling him in the correct order, though not to presentable condition.
Kinetic energy weapons are nothing new, though.

This is the breastplate worn by Carabinier François Antoine Fauveau at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. It has been pierced clean through by a cannonball. Francois was 23 and a dairyman by profession. Needless to say, he did not survive (though his family claims that Francois stayed home to get married and it was his brother who died at Waterloo.)

Also, kinetic weapons are something militaries and intel agencies around the world are looking into as, unlike explosive weapons, they can hit their target accurately, really depends on the guidance system performance… I remember seeing a video clip where they speculated on precision, like being able to take out the seat with the target in a car, leaving the others (relatively) unharmed…

Oh, incidentally:

re: #24 Crush White Nationalism

Speaking of strawmen…..

That’s not a leader. Ronny is a drug supplier who is trying to lie his way into office by pandering to idiots who want to be lied to. There are very few leaders in the Republican party. There are so many panderers.

“Leader” is not automatically a term of praise and I don’t need a bullshit correction based on the assumption that it is. You can apply whatever retroactive definition of “leader” you like but don’t pretend that it contradicts a different, but perfectly valid, definition that I applied earlier. Jackson, Gohmert et al, ARE Republican leaders, along with Tucker Carlson, Alex Jones and a host of other degenerates.

I’m sorry, Jeff and the rest of the gang, I have no idea what I was really getting at, why I was angry, or what I was trying to say here.

I felt overwhelmingly sleepy about that time, even though I had gotten plenty of sleep last night, and almost fell down heading to the bedroom for a nap. I know my blood pressure was way down about then and I probably should have gone to the ER rather than to sleep.
I am awake now, my blood pressure is normal, and I feel much, much sharper. I’m wondering if this has some connection to Covid. I am doing much better but still not completely well. I have seen some evidence that Covid has pretty substantial cognitive effects, more than other viral infections, but I haven’t seen any really well qualified commentary on this.
Since I am 73, there is another possibility that scares the shit out of me, but there is no history of dementia or Alzheimer’s in my family so we have that anyway. We shall see.

How small of a world is it? This small….

I was working on an issue with one of my coworkers who lives in Colorado and when we finished, we slid into talking about moving to different jobs, going to work at another company, and he mentioned that one of his friends had gone to work at a high-end electric car company (not Tesla, not one I’d heard of, in fact). I mentioned that one of my friends bought an Audi electric car and how much I believe they’d spent on it. Then I contrasted it with the tiny car my next door neighbor has.

“Oh they build them here in Mesa, but it’s *tiny*.”

“Is it a Solo?”

“Not sure. Made by an outfit called Electrica Meccanica.” (Goes to Google.)

“Is it a three wheeler?”

“Yes.” (Now have Google open.) “Yes, it’s a Solo.”

“Oh yeah, I watch this guy on YouTube, he has a red Solo and he videos driving around and stuff.”

I started laughing. “That guy lives next door to me! He has his YouTube channel on a sticker on his back window!” I gave my coworker the name of the YT channel and sure enough, it’s the same guy.

So yeah, the world is very small.

Those texting usually know the political preferences of the recipient. People involved in sending out literature have access to the voter registration. Boston University Has A Vending Machine That Dispenses A “Morning-After” Pill For Just $7.25

Many college students aren’t planning to get pregnant when they’re still in college. Many college students would probably consider a pregnancy while they’re in college to be an unwanted pregnancy. Getting pregnant could derail their graduation goals especially with the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

What’s a young woman in college to do if she has unprotected sex and is worried that she might get pregnant? One option that is still available is the morning after pill commonly known as Plan B. A group of students made it their goal to make access to Plan B as easy as possible for the students at Boston University.

On March 1, 2022, Molly Baker and Charlotte Beatty, the copresidents of Students for Reproductive Freedom (SRF), officially introduced a new vending machine that dispenses a generic version of Plan B for only $7.25. The vending machine is located right next to several other vending machines that contain more traditional vending machine items like snacks and beverages.

The fire continues in the Nebraska Panhandle. It has now burned twenty-five square miles.

Crews battling Nebraska fire hope for rain, fear lightning (KSID-AM, Sidney, Nebr., includes overhead photographs of the fire)

GERING, Neb. (AP) — Fire crews battling a western Nebraska wildfire that has destroyed some homes looked Tuesday to the skies with hope and trepidation as weather forecasters warned of thunderstorms.

The National Weather Service forecast a 50% chance of thunderstorms producing heavy rains Tuesday afternoon into the night. A storm could help douse the Carter Canyon Fire south of Gering that has scorched about 25 square miles (65 square kilometers) of mostly grass and timberland, destroyed three homes and damaged several more in the Carter Canyon community that was evacuated Sunday. No injuries have been reported.

While fire crews would welcome rain, they also fear lightning strikes that could spark new fires in the tinder-dry region, said Ben Bohall with the Nebraska Forest Service.

Firefighters had contained about 30% of the fire going into Tuesday, and a lot of progress was made late Monday and overnight as winds died down from the 20 mph (32 kph) seen Sunday.

So: even given the results of the abortion “referendum”, one has to wonder how the KS Lege is going to deal with the issue henceforward… “Gerrymandered to hell” without a doubt, but still GOPers: and probably* with today’s Republicans’ prevalent attitude about the wishes of the electorate.

*just a guess, I’m wildly unfamiliar with Kansas politics

My guess is that the Kansas Legislature is going to drum up some BS piece of legislation that they claim allows them to ignore the results of the vote since it did not go the way they wanted it to turn out.

And then use that as the basis for a series of lawsuits that they hope can get all the way to the Kangaroo Supreme Court.

In the eastern North Pacific, Frank is now a post tropical depression. It is located well-west of central Baja California, and is predicted to curl in toward the California coastline north of Los Angeles early next week.

Tropical Depression Georgette is still hanging on far out to sea, moving east of north. It should become post-tropical by Wednesday night, then turn west.

It seems like a bad idea to kill a $90 million movie that’s almost finished when you have a streaming service to produce content for.

For those excited about the upcoming Batgirl movie, bad news, the film is no more. The DC Comics film starring Leslie Grace as the titular hero was almost finished but according to IGN, it appears that the chiefs at Warner Bros. Discovery have decided against releasing the film in theaters or on HBO Max.

Batgirl, starring In The Heights Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon, franchise returnee J.K. Simmons as her father Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser as the villain Firefly, and Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman was set to be an HBO Max feature focusing on Batgirl’s origins. Sadly for those involved in the film’s production, it was a product of the previous Warner Bros. regime. The Wrap understands that the new regime at Warner Bros. Discovery — following the completion of a major company merger in April — didn’t believe that Batgirl was worthy of release. A completely damning verdict for any production, let alone one that has spent at least $90 million on its production and had Michael Keaton starring as Batman.

More importantly, the more they double down on this, the more people are going to realize that the politicians they elected “to own the libs” aren’t really listening to what they want. Republicans keep pissing off their voters in all sorts of ways, and eventually, some of them are going to twig to the fact that these shitheads are only saying and doing things to stay in power.

As far as the anti-abortion vote in Kansas tonight, this shows what happened after abortion was divorced as the stalking horse for segregated schools. Ralph Reed roped Jerry Falwell in, because Falwell was concerned about the tax-exempt status of his segregation academy in Lynchburg, Va.

As long as “pro-life” was the public face of private “segregation now” which propelled Ronald Reagan into office, Evangelicals (who were mostly non-voters prior to the election of Jimmy Carter) were mostly non-voters. Aside from Catholics, no one really wanted the government interfering in people’s private medical decisions.

When the forced-birth movement became a life of its own, the segregationists no longer had a reason to support it. They are reverting to the original Evangelical position of the government should stay out of medical decisions of individuals. The original position of Evangelicals was that a foetus did not count as a life until it was born (using the Bible as the justification for that position).

re: #294 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

There were two classical positions regarding the fetus becoming a person:
1) birth;
2) the “quickening”.

As you note, the forced-birth movement is derived from a history of political wrangling of a loose coalition of atavists.

When such coalitions unravel there is a new political landscape.

While I’m not ready to declare the US has entered a new political landscape, I do think the GOP started something that they will not be able to see through.

The atavists will not, can not, stop with just lowering taxes on the rich.

At least from the fundamentalists from my Facebook gaggle of “friends”, I gather that most of them never really liked Trump, but a small number of them really loved him.

The evangelicals conscripted-by-Catholics who thought abortion was the only issue about which to care seem to have been the ones who voted for Trump exactly to get the USSC outcome that happened.

The true Trump-lovers are the hard-core bigots and the deep cultists (e.g., followers of Armstong.)

I do wonder how November goes. If (and I think this is a long shot) the Dems can really flip a couple of GOP Senate seats and end up with at least 52 Senators, more than a few GOP strategists are going to start telling the Republicans up in 2024 that they have to cut loose from the sinking ships of Trump and abortion.

Coy Nolin and his mother say they had no idea the four people in their living room were about to conduct a violent exorcism to cast out Coy’s “gay demons.”

Coy says that three days earlier, in an office at Saskatoon’s Christian Centre Academy, the school’s director had interrogated him for several hours after informants told the director Coy is gay. Coy, who was 16 years old at the time, says the director called him “evil” and “an abomination.”

Coy was suspended and told they would try to “cure” him.

“He told me I’d have to take it like a man,” Coy said.

Coy and his mother, Carilyn, say they agreed to the home visit in May 2004 assuming they would discuss the suspension.

But almost immediately after they walked into the house, the four officials from the school and adjoining Saskatoon Christian Centre church placed their hands on Coy. They began yelling, grunting and making other unintelligible sounds known as “speaking in tongues.”

“I was no longer in control. I was pushed aside,” Carilyn said.

After more than an hour, with Carilyn crying in the corner of the room, they stopped.

Coy says the director then grabbed his large wooden paddle, bent Coy over his lap and spanked him hard enough to leave him bruised and limping.

“That was one of the worst days of my life. Even now, just thinking about it, I go numb,” Coy said.

“This was abuse. This was a hate crime.”

Holy shit. Rand Paul just said he opposes health care for veterans because they can’t prove they got their health problems while serving.

I have heard that pathetic, cynical argument advanced before and it basically means that assholes like him are not prepared to even give the benefit of the doubt to people who have volunteered and risked their lives in service to their country.

This is the breastplate worn by Carabinier François Antoine Fauveau at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. It has been pierced clean through by a cannonball.

Isn’t Rand Paul a worshipper at the throne of Ayn Rand? It makes a bizarre amount of sense; he would rather deprive people of benefits they’ve earned than give people benefits they haven’t, because God helps those who help themselves.

Which is another thing that makes modern accounting a highly creative undertaking, most of their assets are in the form of patents, licenses and goodwill.

Amusingly enough, I had a similar situation happen to me today that was totally due to the lack of a (visible) keyhole. My car had been struggling to start the past few weeks and today I decided to finally drag my useless carcass over to Autozone to get the battery checked. It ends up testing as “bad,” so I bought a new one, got outside…and realized that the electronic locks on newer cars need power to unlock. Thank Zod for the power of Youtube that taught me how to unlock the door in the event of a dead/non-existent battery.

Yes. And everyone has an innate right to criticize the government, the troops - yes, I may not like it, but they have a right to do so, just as I have a right to tell them to go piss up a rope - and any other aspect of the country in which we reside. Reading the thread, it is, predictably, an attempt by the Tories to get away from classifying right-wing extremism as domestic terrorism; they apparently even commissioned a report that told the government that they focus too much on the hard right in their anti-extremism measures. (Perhaps that’s because the hard right is the majority of the problem in today’s world? Surely not!)

Well, you know the British literally invented Jingoism (Constantinople crisis, 1878). Then they franchised the process to the Canadians, no doubt earning a tidy profit in the process. The Germans alleged intellectual property infringement and the French and Russians simply tried to pilfer it. And that’s how the First World War started.

Well, this isn’t the most cheerful of news:

The U.N. nuclear chief warned that Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine “is completely out of control” and issued an urgent plea to Russia and Ukraine to quickly allow experts to visit the sprawling complex to stabilize the situation and avoid a nuclear accident.

Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said in an interview Tuesday with The Associated Press that the situation is getting more perilous every day at the Zaporizhzhia plant in the southeastern city of Enerhodar, which Russian troops seized in early March, soon after their Feb. 24. invasion of Ukraine.

“Every principle of nuclear safety has been violated” at the plant, he said. “What is at stake is extremely serious and extremely grave and dangerous.”

That is the risk. But IMHO, its a risk worth taking. Yesterday, Kansas confirmed my hypothesis that there is a large pro-choice majority which can be activated against the threat of Christo-Fascism post Dobbs. Democrats are getting it done. They got it done at the polls defeating the misogynistic attempt to curb women’s rights in Kansas to reproductive care.

They’re doing it by going after terrorists.

They’re doing it by being on cusp of passing legislation package to help veterans, expand health coverage, and the environment (separate bills, reconciliation, etc.) and are taking it to the GOP.

So, what’s the media going to focus on? GOP races, not the Democrats who won theirs.

They intend to make life even harder for women.

I think using abortion to get the base out is a great idea, but I think there is a danger of overplaying it. While a large majority of people oppose overturning Roe, recent polling has also found that more people than not support a ban after 15 weeks which is what law at the center of the Dobbs case proposed. It definitely isn’t a black and white issue for most voters.

Which is a stupid issue reflecting lack of knowledge in the electorate. Late term abortions are very rare, and usually only occur due to serious medical issues. Women don’t carry pregnancies for months so that they can have a late term abortion for the hell of it. Democrats should focus on the Republicans wanting to ban all abortions, from the moment of conception, nationwide. Put the Republicans on the defensive.

Directed by Ridley Scott,

(I’m not well informed about movie stars so I thought I would seek Lizard expertise.)

We will need suggestions for Trump, Roger Stone, hero cop Eugene Goodman, terrorist Ashli Babbitt, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, instigators Alex Jones and Sean Hannity, collaborationist moles Marjorie Treason Green and Josh Hawley, and many more, not including thousands of scruffy looking, mostly overweight extras.
The prize role would be MAGA Shaman buffoon Jacob Chansley, whose facepaint and horned bison headdress have become iconic emblems of the crazed tax cheats and bigots who rioted that day.

Plus, Democrats have a lot more than abortion to run on. There’s the fact that Republicans will end Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, and they will end marriages for gays, and they will block the right for parents to take care of their trans children.

Democrats can also run on climate change spending, trying to lower the debt, the economy, gun regulation, and just getting stuff done.

Neal Stephenson’s 2019 novel _Fall; or, Dodge in Hell_ has as a sort of aside in a few chapters one of the characters traveling across the central USA. And in his future the area has descended into a sort of libertarian anarchy* zone while the coastal zones continue high tech development, computer applications, and on into things such as post-death uploading which is the main thrust of the novel.

* - You hire heavily armed escorts to go anywhere off the main transit routes. There are patchwork “states” that appear to be religious fanatics or what are essentially feudal warlords.

A future I don’t particularly wish to see implemented since while someone from the tech side can pretty much opt to go and attempt to join one of the inland groups I suspect the reverse will not work out well and thus a lot of people will be trapped in societies that are pretty much guaranteed to not have their well-being as any sort of priority.

While we all here agree with this, and understand it, the fact is, we need to work with the electorate we have, not the electorate we want. We can work hard to put the message out there that all that is true; but most important is to hit the message where voters understand it. We don’t have years to change hearts and minds about what we mean when we say we want safe and legal abortions; we have a month, maybe two, to persuade people not to vote for the fucksticks who want to force 10-year-old girls to give birth to their rapists’ babies and who don’t give a shit if a woman dies with her fetus because she has an ectopic pregnancy. Focus on the consequences of what those total abortion bans mean. Women WILL die because of this; I have little doubt some already have.

GOP talking points for the day:

1. claim the Biden admin is weak and damaging US military

3. claim the US is on wrong path because Democrats are X, Y, and Z.

Meanwhile, the reality is that GOP has no policy that benefits all Americans. It’s an obstructionist and regressive agenda and the GOP keeps bringing up their intentions on a daily basis (see also Ron Johnson and Rick Scott looking to gut Medicare and SS benefits).

They need to beat that drum from coast to coast, even in the “safe” states.

Because you know the GOP will not stop until they have instituted a national ban on abortion.

As someone earlier pointed out, Mississippi defeated an anti-choice amendment to their constitution years ago, but that didn’t stop the GOP anti-women brigade from pursuing other avenues to achieve their goals. We have to make every woman understand that this is their objective and they are relentless in pursuing it. We must be equally relentless in stopping them.

When Alex Jones gets cornered on cross-examination, his cough gets much worse.
Then after he gets out of the courtroom it disappears.

He had to. Jones didn’t participate in discovery at all. I mean, for that matter, this whole trial is about the damages he owes; he didn’t appear in his own defense in the trial for his guilt, and was ruled guilty by a default judgment.

Was in Spain recently in, I think Granada, in the old part of town. We were about 60 feet of what turned out to be one of those rising bollards. We heard a loud bang. We could see a car with smoke around it. That smoke was from all the airbags.

The car had gone through into a street that they shouldn’t have. Cripes, the impact to the underside of the car, right un the center of the engine compartment, STOPPED the car instantly. I cringe to think of repair costs, if it is even possible.

Not sure it’s a mental disorder. He’s pathological liar and incapable of telling the truth, but it all works in one direction - just as with Trump, Lindell, and others - they all lie to further their grift and con.

Let’s go with the more realistic one.

Our prisons are full of people just like Alex Jones- con men with massive egos who don’t care about anyone or anything at all except themselves and their own short term gain by any means necessary. Like Trump, Alex Jones relies on the massive sense of Entitlement demanded by his audience and would otherwise be in prison by now if not for failures and outright corruption within our Justice system

Perry Mason moments are generally discouraged in courtrooms, because judges generally want juries to be persuaded on the strength of the facts, not on whether or not one side’s lawyer got blindsided by the fact that the opposition had information he/she didn’t know about. However, in a case that didn’t even get proper discovery because the defendant refused to cooperate - to the point where a default judgment was entered against him for failure to comply - I’m not really sure how that works. This is information that the plaintiffs SHOULD HAVE HAD had this case gone according to all the norms and customs of civil procedure.

This is why the Democrats made the right call in “attacking” Gibbs to help him defeat Meijer in the GOP primary for the Third District of Michigan. Yesterday, Meijer was an 88% favorite to win reelection. Today Scholten, the Democrat, is a slight favorite over Gibbs. If Scholten turns out to be the 218th Democrat in the House, that is a massive win for the country. If Gibbs wins, he is just one more of dozens of fascists already in the House; it doesn’t really make a difference.
