Nice article on challenges with surveilling zoonotic pathogens.

Looking beyond COVID-19, broader animal surveillance is needed to detect future zoonotic diseases before one of them causes the next pandemic, a possibility scientists say is heightened by a changing climate. “We are interacting more and more with wildlife in a planet undergoing climate change, and that will increase the opportunities for viruses jumping between humans and animals,” Holmes said. “It’s an absolute certainty.”

Speaking of interacting with wildlife, my daughter and her friends had a close encounter with a bear near Gatlinburg yesterday. It went right up to one of the cars they were in and put its paws on the vehicle.

dueling presidencies

The Distinct Shame of Senate Republicans

A.B. Stoddard: “Today, a year and a half after January 6, Donald Trump is on his way to announce his third campaign for the presidency, 70 percent of Republicans believe the Big Lie, the Department of Justice is investigating the largest crime in history—and Senate Republicans are silent.”

“Trump corrupted our democracy because people let him. Senate Republicans were complicit in it. They absolved him twice knowing everything. They attempted to prevent the rest of the public from uncovering what they knew. And now that the public is finding everything out anyway, yet they say nothing.”

“Long after Trump is gone, their legacy will remain.”

Joe Biden Keeps Making Progress

The Economist: “When Joe Biden bangs on about bipartisanship and compromising, some Democrats roll their eyes, thinking him out of touch with modern politics. But the accumulating evidence suggests he understands how to make progress better than they do.”

“That may not strengthen his political standing in the short term, but it holds out some hope for his presidency, and American governance, over the long haul.”

“After a midsummer burst of Senate affirmation, Mr Biden can point to a series of bipartisan accomplishments, now including a bill to subsidise America’s semiconductor industry on top of the first gun-safety legislation in almost 30 years and a $1.2trn infrastructure law, achievements that by definition are also a credit to Republicans. Mr Biden’s patience for talks and tolerance for compromise, not qualities associated with the previous president, have also yielded breakthroughs (for now, within his party) on fighting climate change and restraining drug costs.”

They do that so if the driver kills them, other bears can detect that they were there.

Eggs in Purgatory

Interesting brunch dish today at a cafe located north of me.*

On the menu as “Eggs in Purgatory”. It’s essentially a variation of shakshouka - eggs in a spicy tomato sauce. I see recipes that have the eggs poached in the sauce, but suspect in this case they might have been fried over easy and then added right before serving. A very nice change of pace dish over usual breakfast fare and I will consider working out my own version for home consumption.**

* - Place is adjacent/part of a garden and nursery center. Lots of outdoor seating. A Border Collie running about with a baseball and acting like they usually act. I was there around lunch and 90% of the patrons were groups of middle-aged women sitting around chatting over coffee and light fare.

** - My brother gives me jars of homemade marinara sauce so I have a base and it’s a way to use it in non-pasta dishes. And toast is an ideal side since it can be dipped in both the egg yolks and the sauce. (Win Win!)

The Politics of Abortion Are Pretty Simple

Jennifer Rubin: “The abortion issue is entirely polarized on partisan lines. If you want to preserve women’s health and freedom, you’ll vote Democratic (if this is an important issue to you). If you want to force women to give birth against their will and to criminalize medicine, you’ll vote for the GOP.”

“There is no place for Republicans, who have made abortion extremism their signature issue, to hide.

Originalism is the ludicrous theory that the ignorance and prejudices of 18th and 19th century white men were incorporated into the Constitution when it was ratified and amended at the time. A sane theory of jurisprudence is that the legal principles, such as due process and equal protection of the law, must be applied consistently, but we might know a little bit more about reality now than men did two centuries ago.

An article on the Strange New Worlds Enterprise set that I posted to the previous thread says that film was a big influence on their cinematography.

But where Lee worked from a previously constructed design for the Bridge, he designed the Sickbay set from the ground up to allow for more ambitious shooting. “Our little mantra for our show is ‘scope and scale,’ and one of the influences for the whole thing generally is ‘Lawrence of Arabia.’” Lee says. “That’s what drove the whole scale of Sickbay. You can take the camera on a dolly; you can go all over that set without stopping, and we can bring a crane in to shoot straight through it.”

That’s true. Personally, I loved the ambiguous ending in District 9. I thought it suited the film quite nicely.

Christopher Johnson and CJ got away, Wikus completed his transformation into one of their species, and according to Christopher Johnson, it’d take him three years to get home and back.

And if/when he makes it back to Earth, he’s almost certainly bringing some friends with him, and the Prawns weapon technology was vastly superior to anything we humans have.

Makes you think, “Yeah….we might be in some real deep shit.”

Point: Trump won’t win the GOP nomination if he runs in 2024.

Counterpoint: Yes, he will.

I agree with the latter. Trump can’t stand letting someone else be the top dog in the GOP, especially DeSantis, and he sees the presidency as his “get out of jail free” card. Most importantly, as the Vox article says, Trump has a unique appeal to his base a mere politician like DeSantis can’t replicate.

Same as with lots of quality Sci-Fi. When you’re a little kid, you just read the fantastical adventures. As an adult, you find that authors are often writing about real events, putting them in another context to make them more palatable when society would react poorly if they were more direct.

There is a diary up at Balloon Juice on this very subject: needless to say, it doesn’t paint Dr. Oz’s campaign in a very positive light: the good doctor seems to have outsourced his PR to the local (NJ) branch of Clichés-R-Us:

Dr. Oz is in a strong position to return the U.S. Senate to Republican control in 2022! Why must that happen? Skyrocketing inflation, an illegal alien invasion, rampant crime, a weakened military, record high gas prices, and out-of-control spending of your hard-earned money. Abortion Rights Groups Learn to Talk to Middle America

August 4, 2022 at 9:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 133 Comments

Washington Post: “Abortion rights supporters used conservative-sounding language about government mandates and personal freedom in their pitch to voters, and made a point of reaching out to independents, Libertarians and moderate Republicans.”

Said organizer Jae Gray: “We definitely used messaging strategies that would work regardless of party affiliation. We believe every Kansan has a right to make personal health-care decisions without government overreach — that’s obviously a conservative-friendly talking point. We were not just talking to Democrats.”

Josh Barro notes that one very effective ad that ran doesn’t even mention abortion, instead it emphasizes that the proposed constitutional amendment would lead to “a strict government mandate designed to interfere with private medical decisions.”

Charlie Sykes: “Abortion rights activists did not simply appeal to their base; and they resisted the temptation to scratch their ideological id. Instead, they appealed to values that resonate across the political/cultural spectrum. They met the voters where they were; and treated centrists, conservatives, and even pro-lifers with respect. It worked.”

Generally once you give women the means to restrict their family size, or even require them to do so whether they want to or not, it is really hard to get them to have lots of children again. People (especially women) want to have a small number of children who can reasonably be expected to survive, to whom they can give every advantage.
Most men also realize that a woman who isn’t spending her whole life pregnant or nursing and can therefore have a job outside the home, leads to a more prosperous, secure life.

Kushner Says John Kelly Listened to Trump’s Calls

August 4, 2022 at 8:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 38 Comments

“John Kelly was secretly ‘listening to all’ of President Donald Trump’s conversations without telling him, first son-in-law Jared Kushner reveals in his forthcoming book,” according to the New York Post.

“Kushner writes that Trump was unaware that the former Marine Corps general-turned-White House chief of staff was listening to his phone calls until after Kelly’s departure was announced in late 2018.”

“The revelation so concerned Trump that after Kelly left, he issued an order to prevent any other senior White House staff from eavesdropping on his calls.”

Same as with lots of quality Sci-Fi. When you’re a little kid, you just read the fantastical adventures. As an adult, you find that authors are often writing about real events, putting them in another context to make them more palatable when society would react poorly if they were more direct.

Before he was announced to be starring in Batgirl, Michael Keaton was confirmed to be reprising the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman in next year’s The Flash. Regardless, there are now rumblings that Keaton’s return to Gotham has been cut short. While he’s still expected to appear in The Flash, apparently his overall DCEU role is now in danger.

On Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporter published their own take on what was going on behind the cancellation of Batgirl, including speculation that Michael Keaton will now have a “diminished role” in the DCEU. His version of Batman was expected to act as an “elder statesman” to the younger heroes, as well as being somewhat like Samuel L. Jackson’s version of Nick Fury in that he would connect the disparate movies. Along with Batgirl and The Flash, Keaton filmed a scene for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. This latter scene was shown to test audiences who THR says found it confusing, and not long after came the reports that Ben Affleck was returning to the role of Batman for Aquaman 2.

True (about the screwup part): I just read the whole article (and another about the Dalian battery farm) - the main issue seems to be twofold: first, the DOE seems to have dropped a whole bushel-basket of balls when it came to checking out the licensing agreements (still less enforcing the “domestic manufacture” provisions): that the Biden Admin seems to have recently stepped in to try to get Energy to get its act together is too late to be of help with the VRF battery technology; the Chinese have gotten a huge head start.
Secondly - though virtually buried in an early graf - it sounds like the reason China, rather than the US, got to grab the lead in developing this tech, was that the original licensee couldn’t find American investors willing to back them in any major way - supposedly the potential profits were too “long-term” for them to consider.

Shakespeare set plays in Italy because the source material (Decameron) was set there. His historical plays are set in England, and The Tempest is set in the New World.

DC needs to pursue a different angle.

Marvel makes the family-friendly superhero flicks; DC should go with R-rated, adult-oriented superhero films.

As badly as they’re failing, they might want to take it further than that.

LOL we can leave that to Vivid Video.

I saw The Batman earlier this year when that was released, and I enjoyed it. That’s the kind of films DC should be putting out there. The Suicide Squad, the one from James Gunn, that’s another good example. It was a damn good film, even if it did underperform at the box office.

That sort of thing.

I was kidding, of course, and was surprised at how easily I found a work safe reference to it.

The 2nd Suicide Squad was very good, and so is the spinoff Peacemaker, so it’s a shame that they seem to be moving away from TV. Their animated Harley Quinn series is great, and probably isn’t at risk, since they’ve been VERY successful with animated TV. Animation seems to be their strength.

“…the playbook Firtash created will long outlive him, and will persist beyond these revelations. As Firtash illustrated, if you’re an oligarch who ends up in trouble for kleptocratic crimes, you should hire pro-administration figures and claim to have knowledge of “dirt” on a political opponent, regardless of its accuracy or provenance. You should then dangle that information in exchange for lifting American investigations and American charges—and wait for the Americans like Giuliani to come calling.

It was a playbook that revealed just how susceptible the U.S. remains for foreign kleptocratic forces. It was also a move that was completely unprecedented in American history.”

Looks like they just screwed up. China is the biggest producer of vanadium in the world, so they would be looking for this kind of advantage.

It also happened during the Trump maladministration, which actively tried to sabotage our country. I imagine our fossil fuel oligarchs would never want to see a product like that enter the US marketplace.
