Repost from downstairs because I think what has happened to NPR (and to PBS) should be an example of how easy it is to color a story with just a few choice words:

Here’s the important part of the NPR story that NPR did not see fit to expand:

But that’s not what happened. Instead of the batteries becoming the next great American success story, the warehouse is now shuttered and empty. All the employees who worked there were laid off. And more than 5,200 miles away, a Chinese company is hard at work making the batteries in Dalian, China.

The company, UniEnergy, is a subsidiary of a German company in the same business:

UniEnergy Technologies

The bottom line is that the corporate bottom line of the German parent company is likely what did in the manufacture of the proposed batteries in WI.

The DoE gives out grants. Companies take the money (as do non-profit concerns.) The DoE cannot make a company make a product.

To do so is indeed an element of fascism.

The US only does that in war time.

The NPR story colors what happens, coloring according to the grievance theater of the right-wing.

In reality, this is another example where there was not a US business to go forward.

The German company runs the US subsidiary but that again may only exist to harvest grant money from the US.

re: #2 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

And here is the hard truth in that NPR story:

The agency issued the license, and Yang launched UniEnergy Technologies. He hired engineers and researchers. But he soon ran into trouble. He said he couldn’t persuade any U.S. investors to come aboard.

“I talked to almost all major investment banks; none of them (wanted to) invest in batteries,” Yang said in an interview, adding that the banks wanted a return on their investments faster than the batteries would turn a profit.

So yes, the US taxpayer paid for the research.

BUT NO US investor wanted to take it forward.

So a Chinese company did.

I do not blame the DoE for find a maker of batteries outside the US if no one inside the US wanted to invest to make them.

Back from the Apple Store. Mr. C. has selected a new desktop, but still needs to order it after he decides on a couple things.
Now it’s time for me to get a new iPhone. I’m dithering between the 13 mini and the 13. The stakes are low, which increases the dithering aspect. I do like a phone that I can slip in a pocket or small purse, but the regular iPhone 13 is hardly larger than my current iPhone 6 (yeah, I know…) but the mini would probably be adequate. Decisions, decisions.

That’s a good (and fair) point, but the NPR article did say that there are provisions in the research grants which develop these sort of technologies (and I am not sure whether these are strict laws/regulations, or just guidelines) that try to ensure that domestic (US) businesses get first crack at the commercial exploitation of the tech. But in the case of UniEnergy and the VRF batteries, as we see there are a number of flaws in the system.
And DOE blew it again: to me, it was a severe indictment that they allowed the original licensee to (apparently improperly) transfer the license to a European (Netherlands)-based company - who will, of course, be doing their manufacturing “over there” - almost off-handedly.

The X, 11, 12 & 13 are bigger than the 6. It’s enough to make the standard size (not Max) comfortable, because the screen area increases a good amount even though the phone itself isn’t much bigger (it is bigger physically, too, though).

re: #14 Jay C

The problem of nationalism in economics is something which I think is not thought through enough.

Since this technology was patented and one of the patent owners it the US, I think that we should accept as best for everyone that whatever company licenses the technology has to pay royalties, a share of the commercial revenue, to the US.

But I still think the bigger problem is that American investors are so unwilling to take a risk on the future of a promising development.

American investors want easy returns, guaranteed returns, and frankly too high of returns in light of the world’s problems.

The larger screen without a significant (to me) increase in the phone size is what is making the 13 seem attractive. But do I need it $100 worth? I can afford it, but do I need it? I like to make a logical choice, but really, there isn’t one here. There are minor advantages either way. I’ll probably end up closing my eyes and pointing to one or the other.

Doocy asked, “I know you said there is not a call scheduled with XI. Is there a reason why? President Biden has known him for decades. He’s got a lot of free time up there in the residence this week.”

Kirby answered, “He doesn’t have free time. He’s been working all the way through his illness, quite frankly, Peter. So it’s a little bit insulting. And as for a call — it is.”

Doocy tried to say, “Someone is isolating by themselves.”

Kirby called him out, “You suggest he has a lot of free time as if he’s not doing anything, and you know that’s not the case. Now as for a call to President XI, I don’t have anything on the president scheduled to speak to. If ever the president felt like a call with President XI was an appropriate way to respond, or that it would have an effect and an outcome that he wants to achieve, he certainly would be willing to do that.”

Reeves will portray Daniel H. Burnham, an architect “trying to make his mark on history” with his designs for the fair, Hulu said in announcing the limited series Thursday. The other central role, that of convicted murderer Dr. H.H. Holmes, has yet to be cast, the streaming service said.

Erik Larson’s novelistic-style account of the fair — formally called the World’s Columbian Exposition — was published in 2003. The fair’s nickname was White City, stemming from the color of many of its building exteriors.

Various Hollywood players circled the book, and Leonardo DiCaprio acquired the rights in 2010, with the aim of starring in a big-screen version as Holmes. Martin Scorsese reportedly was set to direct.

Scorsese, DiCaprio and Reeves are among the series’ producers. There was no immediate word of an on-screen role for DiCaprio in the Hulu project, and its release date was not announced.

I know this story…really horrifying.

Maybe. The price of the 14 is rumored to be skyrocketing so they may not discount the 13.

I know this story…really horrifying.
The Devil in the White City was a pretty good account.

I know a little of the story, because H H Holmes’s ghost was the monster in an episode of Supernatural.
supernaturalwiki.com
(he was a difficult ghost to get rid of, because he’d asked to be buried in concrete. So nobody could burn his corpse)

Handwriting samples from Holmes and Jack the Ripper’s “From Hell” letter at least 97% matched. The reason these murders are attributed to Holmes is due to at least a few of them being killed by mutilation of their organs. It is thought only a surgically trained doctor could pull this off. Mysteriously, these murders took place during a blind spot in Holmes’s recorded history. This has led many, including some of Holmes’s descendants, to believe That H. H. Holmes is, indeed, Jack the Ripper. If this is true, Elizabeth Stride would have been another victim of his.

The White City was a showcase for Westinghouse electric and the relatively new technology of alternating current lighting, with over 100,000 electric lights installed at the site. Westinghouse won the contract by severe underbidding to beat Edison and Direct Current. He lost money on the $470K bid but considered it well worth it for the spectacular demonstration of AC.
It reminds me of something a centenarian (102 at the time) told us when I was working on the North Texas Oral History Project in the 70s. He described the first time he saw electric lights, at the Denton County Fair in 1883 when he was 8 years old.

Something cool about the 13… if you get a call from someone in your contacts, the phone will ring. If you get a call from someone not in your contacts, it doesn’t ring, it goes straight to missed calls where it’s listed as “silenced call”.

We’ve done this three times already in my state. We’ll turn these asshats back as many times as we have to. In the meantime Sen. Hilgers, keep fuquing that chicken right up to election day, to remind voters where the GOP stands.

LINCOLN — The speaker of the Nebraska Legislature is gauging his colleagues’ support for a special session to debate a 12-week abortion ban, according to an Omaha lawmaker.

State Sen. Megan Hunt [D] posted a Tweet Wednesday night saying that Speaker of the Legislature Mike Hilgers [R] is calling all members and asking them to sign on to a letter supporting a special session to take up the proposal.

Hilgers, of Lincoln, told The World-Herald on Thursday that he has contacted multiple lawmakers to discuss a special session, but would not confirm whether he is proposing a 12-week ban.

“I don’t have additional comment until I’ve finished those conversations and had the chance to comprehensively discuss with my colleagues,” Hilgers said.

Hilgers has not called all lawmakers. Omaha Sens. Machaela Cavanaugh [D] and Justin Wayne [D] said they hadn’t received a call as of Thursday afternoon.

Mike Hilgers gauging support for 12-week abortion ban, Omaha senator says (Omaha World-Herald)

The background on this is the last attempt failed in the regular session in February, falling one vote short.

After that, a Democratic senator from Omaha died while in office, so Governor Ricketts wasted no time in appointing a Republican in an overwhelming Democratic district to replace him. That set up the special legislative session proposal.

This is why supporting Democrats in red states is important. The Republicans do not have the super-majority in our allegedly non-partisan Unicameral to pass a raft of fascist laws. It’s important to keep red state legislatures from becoming super-majorities.

Nebraska is cheap because we have the smallest legislature in the nation (forty-nine districts).

Senator Hilgers won his election in a really bruising season. He was in a multi-candidate primary when it was revealed his wife is on the board of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland.

Forced-birth groups then ran all sorts of attack adverts against him, but he won his primary.

They kept after him, and his election went into a recount over his Democratic opponent. He won the race by twenty votes.

If you didn’t see the news yesterday, Jackie Walorski, a GOP congresswoman from Indiana, was tragically killed in a car accident in her district. Her comms director, Emma Thomson, and Zachery Potts, chair of the St. Joseph County Republican Party, were in the car, and were also killed, as was the driver of the car that reportedly crossed the center lane on the highway and collided with them head on.

Everything about that is awful. On a personal note, this writer has been close to far too many people who have died the same horrible way, or close to their loved ones. We are so, so sorry when we hear any kind of news like this, no matter who it is. It’s devastating.

That said.

They do not say who checked the books out.

ImagineIF Library Director Ashley Cummins was about to board a plane back to Kalispell on Aug. 3 when she got a call from library staff informing her that five books left in the overnight book drop appeared to have been shot with a firearm.

“Not knowing anything else about the situation, I made the decision to close all facilities until we could assess the situation and determine if there was any threat,” Cummins said. All branches of the ImagineIF Library system shut down on Wednesday but resumed normal operations on Thursday.

According to a report filed with the Kalispell Police Department, the five hardcover books were “riddled with bullet holes,” and disposed of by staff after the investigation. Cummins said the five books were not connected to each other or related to any controversial or political topics.

“With no specific titles offering clues to why this happened, we don’t know if this was someone just messing around or if it was meant as intimidation,” Cummins said. “We are not intimidated, but it was alarming for a staff member to open up the collection box and see that.”

Exactly. If you have to report, report in such a way that it can’t be abused for propaganda purposes, and put it in context. This reeks of a hit job, most likely with the intent of pressuring Ukraine into making concessions.

I would consider the International organization compromised to such an extent that it can’t be excluded that reports of crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide, including names and identifying details of living witnesses will be forwarded to the Russia Federation Security Services for elimination.

The north end of the fissure sealed itself off early this morning with spatter cones. But that end of the fissure broke open a hill side so that was elevated.

The south end of the fissure found itself in a little hollow, since the 2021 eruption only partially filled that north end of Meradalir.

This has resulted in the south end being contained now within a large lava lake, which is keeping spatter cones from forming and so a large cone seems still a ways off.

The lava flow this time is many fold of that from the first days of the 2021 eruption. Even under the lava lake, the fissure is still sending up fountains quite high:

Oh, and we are in a significant drought. We have little brush fires popping up all around Austin. Every day, more show up. It’s expensive to put out brush fires. All of the costs to fight them initially are entirely local, the expenses sucked up by volunteer fire departments

Welcome to the climate disaster. We tried to warn you about it for years starting in the early 80’s, but you wouldn’t listen. Then the oil companies said anyone who warned you about what was coming were nut jobs, and shouldn’t be listened to.

Then the oil companies said it was maybe kinda possible, but we should wait and see.

And now we’re fucked and the oil companies have made their profits and they have successfully fucked us right up the ass.
