So So Good! Regina Spektor: Tiny Desk Concert

Regina Spektor sat in her hotel room waiting as we tuned the piano behind my desk. In those idle moments, she whipped up a “Tiny Song,” and she opens her concert singing this sweet, funny and tiny ditty. “Took a train from New York to D.C. / And everyone was coughing on me,” she sings, “But I wore a real tight mask / And got myself a negative COVID test.” I won’t spoil the rest except to say that what unfolds over the course of the next five songs is the humor and passions I’ve loved in Regina Spektor’s music since receiving an early release of her Soviet Kitsch CD in 2004.

Now 18 years later, Regina has made what I believe is her most astonishing record to date, Home, before and after. We hear two songs from this 2022 release, including the album’s opening track, “Becoming All Alone.” The story has Regina walking home alone when she hears God call out her name: “And He said, ‘Hey, Let’s grab a beer / It’s awful late / We both right here,’ ” she sings, “And we didn’t even have to pay / ‘Cause God is God / And He’s revered.” Their conversation ensues, and Spektor wonders just why life and loneliness don’t improve with time. It’s the type of truth and whimsy that makes for such heartbreaking music, including old favorites “Fidelity” and “Samson,” performed here simply on piano with charm and conviction.

“Tiny Song”
“Loveology”
“Becoming All Alone”

Basically, after current governor Greg Abbott got millions of dollars in punitive damages in the lawsuit following his injury, he worked to reform Texas’s civil liabilities laws so that no one else in Texas could get a multi-million-dollar payout from a jury. It’s the quintessential, “I got mine, fuck all y’all.”

It’s an odd time when an actor who is a good visual stand in for a historic character, seems unfit because of an affront that doesn’t really hold up upon scrutiny.

Fidel Castro’s father was from Galicia, Spain, and not someone who would be thought of as traditionally “Latino”.

Franco’s father was from Portugal.

I suspect Franco’s and Fidel’s family trees run into each less than 6 centuries back.

I do get that many people of Latin American ancestry have a gripe with TV an film production, where traditionally Latin American characters are portrayed by actors without such background.

But James Franco playing Fidel Castro does not strike me as a hill upon which to die, if one is really concerned about representation in entertainment.

To understand why the likes of CPAC, Orban, Putin, etc. have found so much fertile ground, we have to accept that many people really do think like them.

Now this following guy may not really be of that ilk, but he like so many young guys buy into beliefs without analyzing them:

Holy shit.

Actress Anne Heche has been hospitalized in critical condition after suffering severe burns in a major car crash in Los Angeles, according to multiple reports.

Witnesses cited by TMZ late Friday said the Wag the Dog and Donnie Brasco star was seen crashing into the garage of an apartment building in her Mini Cooper, only to drive away as bystanders tried to come to her aid. She then reportedly plowed into a nearby home in Mar Vista a short time later, sparking a blaze that engulfed the vehicle and spread throughout the house.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said it took 59 firefighters 65 minutes to put out the “stubborn flames” and “rescue one female adult found within the vehicle.”

Fox11’s Stu Mandel, who watched the rescue operation in a chopper above the crash site, said, “If there’s somebody alive in there this is going to be a miracle.”

Little desire I have to see another “Greatest Story Ever Told” film for Christmas, but I will relish the day whenever some producer decides to make another gospel film for Christmas and cast as the lead an actor with dark skin and curly hair.

The outcry will be music to my ears.

Thomas Patrick Connally Jr., 56, was sentenced in US District Court in Maryland to 37 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. He had been arrested by authorities in West Virginia and charged last year with threats against a federal official and interstate communication containing a threat to harm.

“Everyone has the right to disagree, but you do not have the right to threaten a federal official’s life,” US Attorney for the District of Maryland Erek L. Barron said in a statement. “Threats like these will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

My big move to a senior co-op in West St. Paul happens this Tuesday. I keep moving south every time I’ve moved and at 68, I’m actually exiting Ramsey County. I’ll be in West St. Paul, Dakota County MN, about 15 minutes away from where I am now.

To the musicians here: I sold my drums. I hadn’t been in a band for decades and I discovered that a drum set weighs three times as much at 68 as it did in my 40’s. I made a young drummer VERY happy with my 70’s Slingerlands and Ludwig snare.

When I was valuing the drums, I was thinking in terms of them having been in a damp basement for over 20 years. I put a price in the ad about $200 more than I thought they’d sell for, but they sold for the full amount in one day. It definitely felt like the end of an era but I was glad to get the drums back in circulation to a kid who was so happy to get them. The set was a mix of brands (the stands weren’t Slingerland) so I thought the ‘vintage’ guys would snub them.

I don’t use PayPal; I mail a cheque if my mother or son needs money. On most computer or Internet stuff I have no knowledge so I can’t really have an informed opinion other than “I don’t use them.”

I have to send and receive money from around the world. For example, the man handling our websites is in India. So it makes sense. Early on, I swore I never would, either, but it is really a life saver. Pie Overlord has family in other countries, so I imagine she has the same problem.

I’ve not watched Sandman, never read the graphic novels so I don’t know what it is about.

IMDB user ratings are fairly positive.

But the user reviews… oh boy, that same vibe that the whiners over RoP is strong in this one.

Here is one user review extract:

I specifically gave 1 star for race swapping Death.

So as someone with very little idea of what the show is about, I read the comment and can only figure that reviewer really must have issues.

How can one “race swap” death? Assuming Death is a character, certainly it is not human?

mmmirele  Aug 5, 2022 • 10:10:11pm

This has been a terrible week for the most dominant religious institution in the Intermountain West, the church formerly known as Mormon.

The church attempted to settle its liability in the Boy Scouts bankruptcy case for $250 million. The bankruptcy court judge, Laurie Selber Silverstein (located in Delaware), rejected the church’s proposed contribution in a 281 page opinion issued last Friday (July 29). To wit:

In her ruling, the judge disallowed an agreement to grant one of the largest sponsoring organizations, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a release from all future claims for its proposed $250 million contribution to the settlement fund.

The relationship between the BSA and the Mormon church is more than a century old. For most of that time, the judge noted in her ruling, Mormon boys were expected to take part in Scouting. The tentative settlement upon which Silverstein ruled included a release from all abuse claims against the church—not just those that involved Scouts who alleged abuse in Mormon-sponsored Scout troops. Silverstein wrote that agreement “stretches releases too far.”

wweek.com

On a side note, the Willamette Week article says that the BSA has spent $327 million in legal fees and expenses since 2020 in this bankruptcy.

Yesterday, the Associated Press dropped this article:

Of course the church complained but in a vague way.

The rest of the thread is full of these platitudes and bullshit, with no attempt to answer for the fact that the “hotline” told two church leaders to not report.

I’d also note that the writer is Mike Rezendes, who is not unfamiliar with large, powerful religious organizations. He was part of the Boston Globe Spotlight team which exposed the Boston Archdiocese’s coverup of child sexual abuse. (In the Spotlight movie, he was portrayed by Mark Ruffalo.) One could argue that his work helped Cardinal Law decide that he needed to spend the rest of his life as a resident of the Vatican.

Ok, there are seven “eternals”. Death and Dreams are 2 of them. They have anthropomorphic forms but are not mortals and can change form at will. They usually stay the same but don’t have to.

Plus the author, Neil Gaiman, was deeply involved in the production and he’s very happy with the casting.

The racists need to bugger off.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Aug 5, 2022 • 10:11:12pm

I’m old. Well, not the oldest person here, but I’ve got much less life ahead of me than behind me.

So I doubt I can recall exactly everything from my youth, how I acted, how I felt.

But, back then I just read a few comics (mostly DC), enjoyed them. And that is all. Went to college and gave all my comics to a relative who collects them.

I never, ever had my self-identity wrapped up in some comic, or story, or novel.

I used to read the usual science fiction young people read in those days (Bradbury, etc.)

Still, none of my self-view, how I felt about myself, was affected by any of them.

It just never occurred to me to go into crisis when someone made a movie about something I read.

When the first Superman staring Christopher Reeve came out I watched it, sort of liked it, but even though I had read Superman comics (Action, Justice League) I did not evaluate the movie as not living up to what I thought I knew about Superman from those old comics.

I guess what I am saying is that I can not, in any way, related to all these young people (mostly guys, of course) who are now doing crisis theater over some creative works that few people will remember or care about by the time said whiners are old and gray.

Right now my best guess as to what happened to the youth is that they have spent too much time playing computer games, and not going out into the world of rocks and trees, of beaches and birds and flowers and…. dare I say it: girls.

Okay, Minnesota, send this wingnut packing.

Minnesota Secretary Of State Candidate Questioned Non-English Speakers’ Right To Vote (Huffington Post)

She opposes not just non-English speakers from voting, but also the disabled.

Kim Crockett, a leading candidate in Minnesota’s upcoming Republican secretary of state primary, questioned two years ago whether non-English speakers and people with disabilities should be allowed to vote in the state.

Crockett, who has repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 election, won the Republican Party of Minnesota’s endorsement at its May convention. In Tuesday’s primary, she is likely to become the latest candidate who has spread the “big lie” (a claim that the 2020 election was stolen from former President Donald Trump) to become a Republican nominee for secretary of state.

While discussing a ruling from the Minnesota Supreme Court that upheld a state law allowing people with disabilities or difficulty reading English to ask for help filling out their ballots, Crockett raised the issue of whether people in these groups should be allowed to vote.

What kind of sealant? The sidewall leakage may not be where the original hole was. If it was, I’d consider it a less stable seal than a tread-area sealed hole. What’s your tubes’ odd size?

Good call.

If you’re comfortable with changing a tube when it fails, leave it in and carry the spare and—CO2 cartridges? A pump could take a while on 4 inch tires.

Find the hole in the tube and line it up with the tire and make sure the cause is out. I’ve been out long enough to have no ideas about orange sealant.

Off to wordle.

Banks rip you off, though, and services like WU have pretty low maximums for a lot of purposes. There are other intermediaries like Wise, which I use, where you get a quote on the currency exchange plus a charge for the transaction in advance, and then execute it by sending the US funds to a US account in one of multiple ways and then the service will send the foreign funds to the receiver on the other side. People commonly use these for transactions in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Money transfers in the US are annoying, since what US banks consider an expensive and cumbersome wire transfer is just a normal transfer in other countries that can be done from a smartphone instantly.

Domestic money transfers in the US are annoying, since what US banks consider an expensive and cumbersome wire transfer is just a normal transfer in other countries that can be done from a smartphone instantly.

Getting foreign currency is a pain as well in the USA outside of international airports. Right now I have an “order” in at my bank for Canadian dollars and Euros (for our trip to St. Pierre). They have to “send it out for collection” (a phrase I’ve heard used in other states as well).

We also have the problem of no smartphones here.

My bank’s ATM card is good all over the world (I’ve used it in Canada, Germany, and Poland) with only a charge for the exchange rate (my bank never charges to use its ATM card). St. Pierre’s government tourist board says they have no ATMs in the French territory, so I’m left getting Euros from my bank.

LINCOLN — After being arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault and second-degree trespassing outside the Nebraska GOP convention in Kearney last month, Republican Matt Innis won’t face criminal charges.

Buffalo County Attorney Shawn Eatherton said Friday that his office did not have strong enough evidence to prosecute Innis or anyone else involved in the case. In a letter sent to Innis on Thursday, Eatherton told Innis that he was not required to appear in court on Aug. 10.

“Based on the information this office received and a review of the evidence, please be advised our office has decided NOT to file a case against you at this time,” Eatherton said in the letter. “Therefore, you do not need to appear in court on August 10, 2022, at 2:30 p.m.”

Yeah, banks really don’t expect you to get foreign cash in the US anymore, so it’s a big hassle. Usually the best thing is to get a big wad of it from an ATM in the destination country and suck up the fees, if that’s possible (there are no ATMs in St Pierre?). If you travel internationally a lot there are some good credit cards that have the best exchange rates and no foreign transaction fees.

It is a hassle for North American travelers to Europe that some transportation payments, like train ticket machines and parking machines, don’t take credit cards and need European chip and pin cards to work, and so you actually need cash.

Carter Canyon Fire Operations Transitioning To Local Agencies

Operations are being scaled back on the Carter Canyon Fire in the Wildcat Hills southwest of Gering with the majority transitioning to local departments on Friday.

Aerial observations confirm the fire is 85% contained and the fire’s footprint unchanged at 15,630 acres since Monday morning.

Fire Information Officer Ben Bohall of the Nebraska Forest Service says a staggered demobilization of crews that have come in from outside the area has already begun with the Gering Fire Department and its local VFD partners in the area taking over Friday, “barring any unforeseen developments.”

Bohall says firefighters made considerable progress on mop-up and expanding fire lines Tuesday afternoon and evening. Multi-mission aircraft continued surveying the canyons this afternoon, looking for heat signatures, smoke, and possible flare ups.

Two additional fires near the Carter Canyon Fire were started by lightning, but local fire departments, aided by 2 National Guard Blackhawk helicopters and other resources from the main fire, limited both new fires to 3-5 acres..

There was a restaurant in Lincoln, Nebr. whose owner was whinging that “nobody wanted to work.” His restaurant was short-staffed.

A restaurant entrepreneur saw an opening and opened a competing restaurant next door to him. His only problem was he needed experienced staff.

When he was ready to open, he went over to the other restaurant and offered that guy’s workers starting pay of $15-18 an hour. His whole staff left for the new restaurant, and the guy was unable to open.

He went to court complaining about “unfair competition.” The court yeeted him and his suit right out. His noncompetitive restaurant is now closed.

Somewhat paradoxically, Gov. Pete Ricketts likes to tout that Nebraska routinely has some of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation (the latest figure by the state Department of Labor is 1.9%), and complains that too many people don’t want to work or are driving up wage costs for employers.

On the ballot this year is a referendum to raise the minimum wage (gradually) from $10.50 to $15.00 an hour. A few years ago despite hard campaigning by the Republicans against it, the overwhelming majority of the state approved a minimum wage increase from the federal minimum to $10.50.

The COVID Recession was supposed to be like past recessions: Businesses make bank betting against the economy, workers get screwed, and the administration in power takes the blame. When the recovery eventually began, the workers were supposed to be grateful to work at whatever pitiful wages were offered, businesses were supposed to cash in on various bailouts and subsidies, and the new administration was supposed to be there shoveling money into their coffers to make it all happen.

Trying to get the VA to supply me with more than thirty day’s supply is like you’re asking a pharmacist to dip into their personal stash of barbiturates.

Despite the difficulty, I now have enough for our upcoming trip. I have to go through this argument with the VA every time I go on a trip, because of the restrictions Lundbeck Pharmaceutical (a Dutch company) placed on any US state which has the death penalty (after Oklahoma and Virginia used Phenobarbital to kill death row inmates). The EU has strict laws against their companies providing support for the death penalty in any way.

I just discovered that my dusty electro harmonix memory man is apparently worth north of 700 bucks. I think I bought it for 75, maybe, back in the early 2000’s from a music store desperate to unload it. (somebody’s trying to sell one on Reverb for something like 2200 bucks, but that seems a little excessive).

Didn’t Republican shenanigans around the PACT bill cost a week or so? That’s why Schumer’s schedule had to get revised.

There’s that, and then there’s the fact that they plan on screwing around as much as they can with the Inflation Reduction Act because they’re mad at the Democrats for beating them at their own game. So instead of just passing it and going on vacation like they normally would, they’re pulling out all the stops to make everyone’s lives miserable.

I saw it once by accident when I was working in the UK. Said, holy shit, and found a spot to park and walked up the hill around it…that was 20 years ago.

We kind of wondered whether it was completed from scratch (so to speak) or was the result of people embelleshing an already existing feature

Thanks for the link: I had forgotten about the to-do over Amy’s: it just seems worse when the anti-union efforts aren’t just over the usual wages-and-benefits stuff, but what sound like serious safety issues.
I guess also that it’s only the potential PR embarrassment to their “responsible” corporate image keeping them from doing what most other companies would do: I.e. move their operations to some “red” state where they can exploit cheap immigrant labor
sans benefits , and no one cares how many limbs get lost….

If you don’t understand why workers would be unionizing, yesterday (same day), California’s OSHA fined Amy’s $25K for labor safety violations at its Santa Rosa plant. Given how OSHAs (federal/state) tend to only fine on the most most most egregious stuff, it must be AWFUL there.

Workplace safety inspectors fined organic food giant Amy’s Kitchen $25,070 for three serious violations and 10 other infractions after inspections of the company’s Santa Rosa food production plant in January and February.

Among the more serious violations, according to California Division of Occupational Safety and Health documents provided this week to The Press Democrat, regulators found the company did not ensure that machines to prepare tortillas had proper safety guards secured over hazardous machine components. The agency fined Amy’s $10,125 for the oversight.

Corporate America is desperate and all but begging for a recession. A labor pool that is almost 2% below the traditional “full employment” mark is a pool where the labor can demand whatever it wants and business has to pay it if they want to stay afloat. COVID has proven to be the great equalizer and the suits have no solution for their current predicament besides hoping that the economy crashes so they have an excuse to go on a firing spree.

Some experts believe that the Black Death led to economic growth. But, of course, this pandemic, while very disruptive to the economy, was nowhere near as lethal as that disease. The Spanish flu (which did target the young and healthy unlike COVID) did lead to the Roaring Twenties — maybe we are witnessing that, hopefully not followed by a Great Depression.

They do, but they choose not to cover certain drugs, leaving patients high and dry if there’s an uncovered medication that’s not on the formulary. And the steps to get an uncovered drug approved are onerous. Pharmacy benefit management firms are just THE WORST.

The Spanish flu (which did target the young and healthy unlike COVID) did lead to the Roaring Twenties — maybe we are witnessing that, hopefully not followed by a Great Depression.

The Black Death killed about 40% of Europe’s population.

Meaning

1) agriculture no longer needed labor-intensive farming methods to eke what they could out of marginal land, the good land (with a much smaller labor force) made enough to feed everyone; and

2) people who made wagons and barrels and beer and cloth and saddles and swords and horseshoes and whatever else the 14th/15th centuries were producing adopted a guild system of specialized labor, a precursor to assembly lines, which was hella more efficient than having one craftsman do 14 steps for each product.

This also left enough leftover labor to do precision stonework and build cathedrals and good roads, to let some people paint and sculpt and hey! here comes Michelangelo and DaVinci and the rest of the Renaissance, to let clever people make up new things and look, there’s Gutenberg and movable type, etc etc etc

Investigation confirms what we all know: GOP is deliberately targeting corporate climate measures

Last week, West Virginia State Treasurer Riley Moore announced he would be targeting financial institutions pulling away from the fossil fuel industry, echoing a similar move from Texas’s comptroller. Naturally, these actions don’t exist in a vacuum and are a product of a concerted effort from state Republicans to pull the country further away from meeting its climate goals at the behest of the oil and gas sector. As the New York Times reports, nearly two dozen such officials are pulling these tactics on both state and federal levels. That includes officials in states like Louisiana and Arkansas, whose attorneys general signed onto the West Virginia v. EPA case as plaintiffs.
