Mike Pence: The Most Craven Republican Ever?

Politics • Views: 17,470

As expected, the right wing universe is completely losing its shit today. Every single Republican and right wing nut case in the country is ranting and babbling and shrieking about civil war, because they always do everything in lockstep, and this time it’s their cult leader’s pride at stake.

But the prize for most contemptible has to go to the guy who Trump actually tried to have murdered on January 6th; his craven sycophantic vice president, so obsessively hungry for power he’s still sucking up.

It’s enough to put you off your lunch.

Ah, that new thread smell.

Watching the RW media universe go into a full-on Fukushima-style meltdown has proven to be extraordinarily satisfying today.

First target of insurrectionists has thoughts, ignoring that he would have been assassinated had the mob gotten to him. Cognitive dissonance is a thing. Cult behavior is a thing. Stockholm Syndrome is a thing. All of those apply to Pence.

And he’s still never going to be POTUS.

Apt analogy, because Fukushima wasn’t just a one-off like Chernobyl, but a series of meltdowns and catastrophic failures.

re: #587 Barefoot Grin

I’ve seen twitter posts claiming that Trump actually filled the 15 boxes himself because he didn’t want aides seeing what he was shipping to MAL. But so far anecdotal.

Here’s a Wash. Post article that address that issue. I pulled the bolded sentence below out of same article.

washingtonpost.com

“Trump was noticeably secretive about the packing process, and top aides and longtime administrative staffers did not see the contents, the people said.”

You do have to give Pence credit for one thing, however. It’s remarkable how much he was able to achieve with a complete lack of a spine.

Well, yesterday evening before the FBI raid I was looking for songs from my old favorite group, Peter Paul & Mary when I came across this cover they performed in 1966. It got me thinking that a number of weeks ago we collected a whole bunch of train songs, there must have been hundreds of them! Anyway this is an airplane song. PP&M also covered “Leavin’ On A Jet Plane” so they were trying to make airplane songs a thing. There are far fewer airplane songs than train songs.

Dangerman  Aug 9, 2022 • 10:25:30am

“Donald Trump’s team and allies are moving swiftly to draw political benefit from an unannounced search by FBI agents at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago home on Monday,” Politico reports.

“And they’re keeping tabs of Republicans who aren’t, in their view, sufficiently rushing to his defense.”

Said a person close to Trump: “They’re going to drastically use this to rally their allies, GOP leaders on Capitol Hill and juice for his political agenda and run for 2024. If there was a 99 percent chance it’s 100 percent now. He makes it part of his platform - going after the FBI.”

You don’t get that high on a commercial airliner, but you can on psychedelics.

Commercial aircraft typically fly between 31,000 and 38,000 feet — about 5.9 to 7.2 miles — high

The show of the summer has arrived, but it’s not at your local movie theater. The Perseid meteor shower returns every year between July and August, offering sky-gazers a chance to enjoy the last weeks of the sweltering season outside, looking up at the night sky.

According to NASA, the Perseids are most active from July 17 to Aug. 24. The peak this year, when the most meteors will shoot across the sky, is expected to be Aug. 11-13.

Depending on where you are in the Northern Hemisphere, you could spot up to 40 meteors per hour during the peak.

The Perseid meteors are pieces of the comet Swift-Tuttle. When Earth passes the comet each summer, debris from Swift-Tuttle creates the shooting stars we see in the sky. According to NASA, there is no chance our planet will soon run into the comet.

What I’m gathering from this thread is that yes, Trump COULD HAVE declassified any document he wanted. However, I was essentially correct - there is a procedure he has to follow in order to do so. There would be records of this procedure being followed. There are not. Therefore, these documents were still classified, and nothing he says or does can change that fact.

My idle speculation - as it would be irresponsible not to speculate - is that he didn’t specifically intend to take classified documents, he just told whoever was moving him out to “throw everything in from my rooms that isn’t nailed down”; he strikes me as the sort of person who would not be so neatly organized as to have places for storing classified documents that he would consciously know to tell movers to leave behind.

I am not sure this is true. The power to classify or declassify documents stems from the president to people he designates. As the law stands now the president can choose to declassify something mid conversation if he chooses. The agencies that do the initial classification gain that authority through the president and can not override him. There are pretty on point supreme court rulings on this and since the power flows from article II of the constitution it isn’t even likely congress could pass a law restricting it without bringing up serious separation of powers issues.

The rules for classification are set forth in an executive order and the executive can change those rules as he sees fit.

If you’re a female of child-bearing age, get the hell off of Facebook.

While I agree with you about getting the hell off a faceplant, that tweet is factually wrong. She wasn’t charged with having an abortion and faceplant complied with a lawful search warrant. They didn’t just “give the cops” that information.

Celeste and her mother were charged in July with allegedly removing, concealing or abandoning a dead human body and concealing the death of another person after the Norfolk Police Department received a tip claiming Celeste had miscarried in April at 23 weeks of pregnancy and secretly buried the fetus with her mother’s help. The case was first reported by the Lincoln Journal Star.

While Celeste told police that she had suffered a miscarriage, they continued to investigate, serving Facebook with a search warrant to access Celeste and Jessica’s Facebook accounts. They subsequently found messages between the mother and daughter allegedly detailing how Celeste had undergone a self-managed abortion with Jessica’s help. There are four states that ban abortion at 24 weeks, and more than a dozen that broadly ban it at the start of fetal viability.

Issac Bailey hits another one out of the park:

Cry me a river about the FBI search, Trump apologists

None of the awful things he’s done in his adult life has ever led to real accountability before a genteel searching of his Florida home. I say genteel because it’s not remotely like what a drug enforcement unit in Horry County did to Julian Betton in Myrtle Beach in 2015…What happened at Trump’s place is genteel compared to what Louisville police did to Breonna Taylor…Ask Anjanette Young if the FBI’s non-violent raid of Mar-a-Lago was the kind of trauma Trump loyalists pretend it was. In 2019, Chicago police wrongly raided her home. They had the wrong address. During the raid, she was handcuffed while naked.

Trump apologists can cry me a river about police overreach and aggressive tactics, particularly because many of them have had no problem when law enforcement invaded the homes of people they don’t like.

I doubt it, and I wasn’t making any legal pronouncement on the current situation just that the president has ultimate authority over classification or declassification. I don’t know if he has to take any affirmative action to declassify. He also has the authority to choose who to share classified information with. I think if this is all that DOJ is going at him with it will end up becoming a constitutional question that will ultimately end up before the SCOTUS and I can guess how that will turn out.

You can still get Netscape Navigator on the Interwebs; the final release was in 2008.

re: #176 bratwurst

So the conventional wisdom across the spectrum from Yang and Cuomo to Pence, Margie and Bobo boils down to “In order for law enforcement to appear non-partisan, Trump must be allowed to ignore all laws in perpetuity.”

Really?!?!?

Am I missing something?

That’s pretty much what they’re saying.

The problem is when the idiot “independents” start weighing in, although I guess in theory Yang falls in that category.

Far too many people in this country are like “It’s makes me uncomfortable that I have to ‘pick a side’ on Trump. Let’s just ignore this because it’s un-American to hold a President accountable for their actions.”

If Mitch is ready to rock, I am sure he will have no shortage of friends…and way more impressive ones than Susan Collins.

Having said that, I tend to agree with your second point. He’s clearly the target of a serious criminal investigation right this moment and he won’t shut the fuck up. He cares way more about his next golf game than the fortunes of whomever the GOP nominates as long as it is not him.

He will be a problem as long as he lives, but I think for Mitch and others the temptation to be able to snap up the 70,000 voters in the upper midwest that voted straight (R) aside from the top last time will (in addition to losing the Senate) force them into action ahead of 2024.

Did he change the executive order? We know that EOs can’t just be immediately changed, otherwise Biden wouldn’t have had all this trouble with SCOTUS.

No, he didn’t. From the thread by a security clearance lawyer above, it has been litigated that the President’s verbal statements are not self executing, and he actually has to issue proper orders to the proper bodies and document it. Otherwise, you will get the sort of post-hoc chaos that Trump will try to assert.

If I would go out on a limb here, the DoJ might have intelligence that a foreign government has some of these documents illegally, and can identify the exact copy from some of the counterintelligence markers in the document copies.

There were statements by several #lawtwitter lawyers yesterday that alluded to the fact that DOJ doesn’t really pursue cases of “just” mishandling classified documents; there really isn’t much point in it. If they’re going after the documents Trump took from the White House when he left, there’s most likely a bigger reason… And if they’re bold enough to go after Trump himself to investigate it, that reason definitely can’t be small.

This is the one way the DoJ could get him IMO is if they can prove after he was president he shared or sold classified information. I think they will never convict him for just having it.

If feels like they must have caught a foreigner with a document that Trump sold, or leaked to impress someone. You don’t go after a failed former President unless you have a rock-solid case.

That’s the conclusion I’m coming to, as well. All we have is speculation at the moment, and it’ll be quite some time before the details come out - if he’s charged, if it gets that far, all the if’s that come in between. But I’m not seeing much else that would get the DOJ out of bed to knock on the doors of Mar-a-Lago at 9 AM.

I have a feeling that Prince Bonesaw, rather than Czar Vlad, will turn out to be the beneficiary of Trump’s sticky fingers.
It’s also occurred to me that he could have provided a major haul to Erik Prince, sort of wholesaling raw material which Prince would then process and sell retail in job lots.

I recall he waved classified documents in front of reporters to show to “powerful” he was while president. One guess is he did that again, in front of someone at MAL, who reported it.

However, I think it’s equally likely that he sold some info and the FBI is looking to prove that.
