Remember the 31 Patriot Front goobers who were arrested in the back of a U-Haul when they showed up to attack an LGBTQ protest back in June? This was not due to some masterpiece of intelligence work or a tip from a mole in the group. The idiots had loaded into the U-Haul in a motel parking lot and a concerned citizen spotted them and called the cops. I wrote this at the time.

Once again, we see that violent right wing gangs know nothing about operational security, just as their cosplay gun-humpers know nothing about cover, concealment, and stealth in the field. I believe this weakness is inherent in the performative nature of their activities, and it is one of the many things that will result in their catastrophic defeat if they get the civil war they crave.

Could someone please explain what the GOP plan seems to be for Medicare and Social Security? I am clearly not paying sufficient attention to the discussions — what is this talk of phasing out the programs over the next 5 years or changing the spending on these programs —- what exactly is the GOP (or at least some of them) trying to do?

They’re trying to turn them from federal entitlements - permanent, funded programs that are guaranteed - to discretionary spending, which has to be explicitly maintained by congressional vote every year, and they can apply sunsetting rules to it.

It is always thus. People who never served are absolutely convinced that they are experts in fighting.

They aren’t. Until you’ve taken fire, you don’t understand the pucker factor of the pucker factor.

I never took fire, but my dad did (he was the CO of VMFA-314 in 1970 in Chu Lai) and it tore him up.

I was, however, a KC-135 pilot in the early 80’s in the USAF sitting nuclear alert at K. I. Sawyer AFB in the pine barrens of the Upper Peninsula in Michigan.

We took over the NATO refueling responsibilities of the RAF when they sent all of their refueling assets to the South Atlantic during the Falklands War.

This adds credence to the speculation that Trump might well have been selling access to classified information for mucho dinero to hostile powers and/or individuals connected to those powers.

If he really was doing that (and no one in their right mind would put it past him), it would make Watergate look downright trivial in comparison.

Or if there is highly classified info there, they may just want to verify who may have had access to it or if anything may have been removed/destroyed since the FBI saw the files in June. I am not going to get to excited about anything until I see an indictment, and maybe not even then. Won’t really be convinced Trump will pay any price until there is an actual conviction.

From what I read, seems like the security cam footage was indeed handed over to the authorities.

I wonder if the FBI is looking for someone in particular. I think the urgency with which these warrants were executed probably has to do with immediate national security issues. Documents printed on State Department and White House color printers have a coded time/date stamp that also indicates which printer and computer were involved in the printing. It’s undetectable to the naked eye, but color photocopiers and scanners pass that info on to the copies themselves.

Let’s say - hypothetically - that Top Secret documents printed on an Oval Office printer sometime between 2017 to 2020 have started turning up in Moscow (and have been discovered by the CIA, inadvertently or otherwise); checking logs will quickly lead to the person(s) who had the documents in their possession. Records of storage or destruction are also kept for all White House documents. If certain documents were neither filed nor destroyed, then it can be deduced that they are likely to be at Mar-a-Lago, in the possession of the ex-president. Then, if it’s suspected that he’s selling access to those documents to someone the FBI has been keeping an eye on, then getting that security camera footage could pretty much make it an exceptionally damning case.

I suspect the request for security tapes means they either learned of planned sales in recent months or that they discovered the products of those sales and are trying to prove that the sale took place at MAL and not another location unconnected to Trump. Somehow, I don’t think Garland would risk a potentially massive political blowback just to smack Donny with a few charges of taking classified docs with him when he left office.

It doesn’t have to be printed on a WH printer, it could’ve been printed somewhere else. And there may be an additional layer of steganography generated by the software that printed the document (you know how some scholarly sites include tracing info on the PDF copy you download). Steganography which even is transmitted via black-and-white photocopy or even a photo of the document. From what I understand, this is how Reality Winner got nabbed.

I think Garland wants to make it clear that when the charges are read out, the case is so solid and air-tight that the only possible deal to be offered will be how many years Donny spends behind bars. Getting him for carrying boxes of classified documents to MAL and failing to return all of them when asked would be legit, but I suspect the possible sentences even if the government went for the maximum allowable would be small enough that just letting him go with a fine and a wrist slap would appear plausible.

Years and years ago, I recall seeing a news segment about that very phenomenon, steganography. Basically, it pointed that this kind of embedded data would ultimately make life difficult for criminal types engaged in forgery or whatnot.

Personally, I thought this was common knowledge for the last 15 to 20 years or so, but I guess maybe it isn’t.

“So here’s the deal, Mr. Trump. You plead nolo contendre to all charges and you’ll get 10 years in a Federal minimum security facility. And you’ll serve the full ten years, but all things considered, it won’t be that bad. Don’t worry, it’s nothing like ADX Florence. Make us fight this out in court, and we’ll ask for 25 years to life - and with what we’ve got on you….yeah, you’re gonna end your days behind bars, that’s not a threat, that’s a guarantee. Make your choice, Mr. Trump. The clock is ticking.”

I’ve been toying with similar techniques for inconspicuous traceability of web and other documents, like documents which change wordings depending on who accessed it, embedded “dirt” which you wouldn’t detect unless you know what drum diameter your laser printer has, etc… And yeah, 15-20 years ago.

I also think that Trump’s been hinting so blatantly for the last few weeks about announcing a 2024 run in the near future as a defense mechanism. I wouldn’t be surprised if somebody in his inner circle (probably Rudy) has told him that the Feds can’t touch him if he’s running for the presidency, and that they’ll have to put a hold on any charges until after 2024.

About classified documents: Anything that can reveal any information that could compromise a national asset (human or machine) will be SCI, and not be laying around the Oval Office.

Trump like any President would have had to go to a special room (WH has them) where any such documents are kept, and signed upon access.

My suspicion is that Trump took regular old TS documents that have something to do with himself, his family or organization, and whatever entities with whom they want to do business (e.g. KSA, China, etc.)

It would not surprise me at all that Trump took some compromising information on the KSA royal family upper echelon, for example, to blackmail them into sending millions of dollars his way, as in having one of their golf tournaments at his club.

Or, he took some classified background material on various politicians (both Republican and Democrat) to use against them.

This, btw, would explain the obeisance of so many Republicans who don’t really need Trump’s support to win elections.

Triangle of Sadness

Youtube Video

In Ruben Östlund’s wickedly funny Palme d’Or winner, social hierarchy is turned upside down, revealing the tawdry relationship between power and beauty. Celebrity model couple, Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean), are invited on a luxury cruise for the uber-rich, helmed by an unhinged boat captain (Woody Harrelson). What first appeared Instagrammable ends catastrophically, leaving the survivors stranded on a desert island and fighting for survival.

If, as it seems, the Crimean Peninsula is now within Ukrainian missile range, I get the feeling that sad young lass won’t be the only Russian skedaddling back home. There were stories published in mid to late March that wealthy Russian elites in Crimea were putting their apartments or homes up for sale, with some saying off-the-record it was because they were sure it would only be a matter of time before Ukrainian forces would start launching attacks as part of their efforts to retake the peninsula.

I’d say they were correct in that assessment.

re: the former guy: Everything I’ve read from lawyers and nat-sec types indicates the following:

1) The DOJ could conceivably have gone after him just to get the documents back, but this is a very heavy-handed way to do it and likely a mistake unless they show all the other ways they tried to get them back and/or what’s in them;
2) It is possible, though highly unlikely, that the search warrant was regarding evidence of criming by someone else, though Donald Trump has the warrant document and could publicize it if that were the case (think “witch-hunt”);
3) On the balance of probability, then, it’s highly likely that the DOJ is just holding their cards close to the chest, and there is something bigger here - something which had to have happened recently; you don’t get a search warrant for the former President of the United States for holding boxes of classified documents after two years.

And yet, they are leaning hard into the “defund the FBI” movement, because what the base wants to hear right now isn’t, “We’ll pardon your criminal overlord once we get power back,” but, “we’ll literally start a war to prevent your criminal overlord from being punished.”

Trump brought in a lot of first-time voters who were otherwise disillusioned with politics. Those voters form the core of his personality cult. It’s a strong likelihood that with their dimestore Führer cooling his heels in the slammer, a significant number of them might well decide to sit out elections, a kind of “cut off your nose to spite your own face” protest.

So, to sum up yesterday:

The GOP is intent on defunding law enforcement because the guy Trump appointed to the FBI approved a warrant, a GOP approved judge signed off on the FBI warrant, and the search was lawfully executed against Trump just as it would against any other person, and that the law Trump appears to have broken was signed into law by *checks notes* Trump himself because he thought that the FBI would end up using it against Hillary.

Do I have that right?

Because it certainly sounds like the GOP thinks they’re above the law, and that the FBI and law enforcement should really be going after GOP enemies, and not lawbreakers regardless of their political affiliation.

All those right wingers claiming to back the blue are singing a different tune since 1/6/2021. They question law enforcement going after and arresting insurrectionists and holding them in jail like common criminals elsewhere in the US. They question tactics and methods used by law enforcement all the time. They can’t believe the law is being applied to them, even as they knew they were breaking the law at the time.

They just don’t care about law enforcement unless it is being used to advance their goals. These sociopaths are fascists - intent on using state power to further their agenda and punish their enemies. They’re projecting their own criminal conduct on everyone trying to hold these fuckers accountable.

About classified documents: Anything that can reveal any information that could compromise a national asset (human or machine) will be SCI, and not be laying around the Oval Office.

Trump like any President would have had to go to a special room (WH has them) where any such documents are kept, and signed upon access.

Now he could have pilfered some from the room, which of course is a felony in and of itself, regardless of where they ended up.

My suspicion is that Trump took regular old TS documents that have something to do with himself, his family or organization, and whatever entities with whom they want to do business (e.g. KSA, China, etc.)

That is also the take over at the BBC

Unfortunately, this article is paywalled - and in Czech - but the gist of it is: Viktor Orbán is now looking at a quickly escalating economic crisis back home.

Here’s the translation of the non-paywalled part:

The financial burden of the various reliefs and subsidies that the local government promised to the citizens as compensation for high prices is starting to collapse onto Hungary. Viktor Orbán’s cabinet must gradually begin to be more conciliatory towards the demands of Brussels and the financial markets.

At the end of July, the British newspaper Financial Times caused a stir in the Hungarian media when, in an economic analysis, it compared Hungary to a bankrupt Sri Lanka. The Hungarian economy still has a long way to go, but rapidly accelerating inflation, rising government debt, the collapse of the Hungarian forint and lack of interest in government bonds have been causing the government sleepless nights in recent weeks.

They are therefore trying to negotiate with Brussels the unblocking of fifteen billion euros from the pandemic recovery fund, which the EU froze due to concerns about corruption in state contracts and reservations about Hungary’s legal system. According to the Financial Times, Orbán should also promise a faster move away from Russian energy sources.

Bakery and dairy products are already 50 percent more expensive compared to last year, while in the Czech Republic, for example, they have “only” increased by 30 percent year-on-year.

Looks like CPACs big Hungarian hero is in trouble back home. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving piece of shit.

Trump apparently refused to answer questions posed by the NY AG’s office.

Yeah, that’s not the win for Trump he thinks, because civil suits have the ability to note the refusal to answer has negative connotations.

If he had nothing to hide, he’d have answered the questions.

That’s the reason refusing to answer is problematic. In a civil suit, the refusal to answer will be evidence.

GOP could see some advantage out of Trump in jail. With him safely sidelined they could still appeal to his base as the party that would pardon and release him and seek justice for those who persecuted him, while not having to deal with an incompetent, unpredictable, narcissistic dolt as a party leader.

That’s a real tough one to call though.

Donald Trump brought out a whole lot of people who never voted before, because he was explicitly racists, Nazis, right-wing Chrisitians, and misogynists during his campaign. On top of that, most of those people despise establishment Republican politicians. Those people are the base of the Republican Party now. It’s going to be tough for the GOP to thread that needle and keep all those folks happy enough to come to the polls again, and Democratic voters and others see real danger in letting these folks run the country.

Why the Trump search warrant is nothing like Hillary’s emails
The president has decried the FBI’s search of his home. But legal experts say the agency is likely on firm ground. They note Trump could clear a lot of the mystery up himself.

In the absence of more detailed information about the investigation, it’s unclear what potential crimes DOJ is probing. Notably, Trump — after a fierce campaign against Clinton in which he called for her to be jailed for her handling of classified material — signed a law in 2018 that stiffened the penalty for the unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents from one year to five years, turning it into a felony offense.

That was the same statute that just three years earlier Petraeus pleaded guilty to in order to avoid a felony conviction.

Psycho hospital worker.

On the afternoon of July 18, officers with Secaucus Police Department arrived at Hudson Regional Hospital, less than five miles west of Manhattan, after authorities received a phone call that a bomb was in the hospital.

When officers swept the hospital, bomb-detecting dogs “gave a positive indication” on a closet in an office, police said in a news release. Police entered the closet and found “a large cache of rifles, shotguns and handguns, along with assorted ammunition for the firearms.”

Hospital employee arrested after 39 guns, including assault rifle, found in office closet (USA Today via MSN)

It is my entirely unfounded theory that Trump has hidden particularly classified hot stuff beneath her coffin, knowing full well that no judge would sign off on an exhumation request, and whenever they need access (in order to sell the documents to the Russians/Saudis/North Koreans, etc…), they just have to go perform “maintenance” on her gravesite.

There are no facts at all to corroborate this claim but again, it would be irresponsible not to speculate.

In any event, the bottom line is that Trump is in some sort of very deep legal trouble. There is enough information already available to know that—and, again, he is not sharing the documents that might clarify things. By hitching their wagon to him, the GOP might instantly lose law and order Republicans for whom this is a bridge too far. And if it comes out that he’s going to be popped for something really serious—selling documents to the Russians, fomenting insurrection, conspiracy, etc.—then the GOP could be left holding a very big, very stinky bag

Extremely hot dumpster-fire take here: I think they’ve actually done that math. I think the problem with jumping ship to someone like DeathSantis - someone who isn’t a proven criminal - is that right now, the Trump name is the only thing that is getting their rabid loyalists out of bed in the morning. If they drop Trump now, they lose any hope of ever regaining power in this century; they will lose everything they have fought for the last 70 years to gain. They are swimming back toward the sinking ship (I loved that illustration from upthread, btw) because, while they might privately hate him, and they definitely are terrified that he is guilty of some or all of what the Democrats and the DOJ have been pointing to, they are beholden to power and nothing else - and right now, all roads to power lead through the name recognition of Donald J. Trump.

They’re counting on election fraud - stealing this and every election to come by refusal to accept any outcome where GOPers don’t win to carry the day.

They are full fascists and will cover up crimes by Trump with still more crimes.

Democracy isn’t dying in darkness - it’s dying in the open and WaPo thinks that this is because the DOJ applied the rule of law to Trump in executing a search warrant that passed probable cause hearing with a federal judge.

[GOP Congresscritter]: “I demand that the FBI and AG Garland disclose exactly what they’re investigating Trump for! This is nothing but a politically-motivated witch hunt to smear a former President who’s still enormously popular!!”

[The following afternoon, at a presser] [AG Garland]: “It came to our attention that former President Donald Trump was selling access to top secret classified military intelligence from his Presidential Daily Briefings, which he illegally retained, to known agents of the Russian foreign intelligence services. We have determined that he was paid approximately $500,000 for this information. We have the evidence which proves, conclusively and beyond any shadow of a doubt, that Mr. Trump did what he is accused of.”

That’ll only be the real hardcore nuts like Boebert, Jordan, Hawley, Gaetz and Greene. If that evidence were presented to your average GOP representative, I think the party would try to put as much daylight between themselves and Trump as humanly possible.

And yeah, the GOP would be utterly fucked for the next few election cycles. They’ve hitched their wagon to Trump and if he goes over the cliff, they’re all going down with him.

MAL getting searched via a legitimate warrant and Trump taking the 5th is not going to, in my opinion, sway any Democrats to vote GOP/Trump. Or sway any independents that way either.

The braying hyenas who are screaming, shouting, and tossing hate rhetoric to the rabid base were not going to vote for Biden or any Democrat before these events. So the media handwringing about how all this is “Bad For Biden” are simply tossing out more BS.

re: #348 Dopamine Fish

Trump.

All of that and…if they drop tfg, he will be pissed.
He is guaranteed to make things worse/miserable for them

Though I expect GOP Congresscritter to exclaim: “It must have been planted!”

And the media to give that as much or more credit than whatever Garland and the DOJ have on the whole scandal.

A lot of these people are too far gone to admit making an error of that degree. To much ego and career expectations tied up in it.

The problem is if they don’t double down, they risk the loyalty of their crazy MAGA base.

And they need those insane motherfuckers to get re-elected.

Too bad that most of the House GOP walks in lockstep with Trump. I am still astounded that Massie voted to certify Biden since he is as crazy as Boebert or MTG.

The majority of Republicans are against Russia and have sided with the Biden administration on at least that particular aspect of his foreign policy. There’s still quite a few old Cold Warriors in the GOP and they see this as a golden opportunity to utterly hobble a major geopolitical rival for decades to come (and on that at least, I fully agree).

It’s only the hardcore MAGAts that are pro-Russia.

So Pierce says that it isn’t helpful for the media to declare the raid “unprecedented.” But let’s be clear: it is unprecedented. The problem is the media is framing according to the GOP’s talking points—i.e. that it is politically unprecedented. It implies the raid was illegitimate. They aren’t even considering, for the most part, the unprecedented nature of Trump’s crime.

Wasn’t it noted that during one of the debates with Mondale, it seemed like Reagan looked seriously confused, like a real “WTF am I doing here?” sort of moment, but then his actor training kicked in and he recovered pretty quick?

re: #364 William Lewis

Really the nation’s best hope is a massive instantly fatal coronary at one of his rallys.

I think that when he dies there will be three things:
1. Immediate large (and unfortunately fairly long-lasting) spate of conspiracy theories about who/how he was assassinated. And at least a core of the nut right will rally around this as their martyr or saint of Fascist Racism.

2. Attempts by various jackass conservative politicians (especially Ted Cruz) to claim the crown as leader of the nut right. I expect this will fail since all of them are politicians first and this fact will be held against them. Some splintering of the nut right over this and I don’t think any of them succeed at gaining the same level of loyalty. All of Trump’s children horribly fail here as well, and probably end up bogged in suits and criminal investigations for a few decades.

3. The knives come out about what Trump has done in the past 30+ years. Partly as part of #2 since the various factions try to tear each other down, the various NDAs no longer apply, and many rush to publish their books and tell-alls while the subject can still be considered newsworthy in some circles.

Does “I don’t recall” work when there are public statements at rallies and such recently with him saying “I recall…” followed by some stream of BS?

Sort of like showing the jury a tape of what Alex Jones was saying that morning as compared to what he’d just testified about.

He has additional problems, but only an alcoholic would do something like this.

According to the police report, Vermont State Police were notified of a burglary complaint from a residence in Stamford at 5:55 p.m. on May 1. Police found that several bottles of alcohol were taken from the residence while the homeowners were not present. After collecting statements and looking at surveillance videos, police found probable cause to charge Miller with felony burglary into an unoccupied dwelling.
