In Which Alien Jazz Duo DOMi & JD BECK Take Over the Tiny Desk Studio

If you’ve heard a DOMi & JD BECK song or watched a performance online, expectations of catching brilliance when you witness the jazz duo in person are likely high. JD’s drumsticks move faster than the brain can process. DOMi offers every appendage on her body to the keys. It’s frantic but focused, and I can’t stop watching. For as tight as the two artists are musically — and even physically; one of their few Tiny Desk requests was for the drums and keys to be set up as close as possible — they take silly self-deprecating jabs when they aren’t playing. It’s believable until they transform and the music starts.

The two musicians come from two completely different parts of the world. James Beck began cutting his teeth as young as eleven at jam sessions in Dallas. DOMi, aka DOMi Louna, was born in France and raised on jazz, and enrolled at the Conservatoire Régional du Grand Nancy at five. DOMi eventually made her way to the States via a Presidential Scholarship from the Berklee College of Music. The two met at a trade show in 2018 and have been inseparable since, playing sets on YouTube and driving the internet nuts. Before they knew it, they were rubbing elbows with the upper echelon in jazz, R&B, and hip-hop.

The duo’s debut album, ironically titled NOT TiGHT, is a graduation of sorts with all of their OGs lending a hand — notably Anderson .Paak, who took DOMi and JD BECK under his wing and made the duo the first signee to his APES*** label. The two brought highlights from that album to the Tiny Desk, including the vines, turf and vibrant floral arrangements from the album cover. Before “U DON’T HAVE TO ROB ME,” a true story turned comedy, they make another attempt at neutralizing the room. DOMi says, “We’re gonna ruin it!” It’s too late for all of that. We’re already amazed.

Can we blame you for haggis? Or do you skate on a technicality that it’s only Scotland and the rest of the UK hates it too…

I am Scottish (50% by genes).

What is your problem with haggis. Are we going to have to fight? Are you going to disparage my gran’s fried haggis slices with taties and neeps?

U don’t have to rob me
It’s not really worth it
I’ve only got credit cards
And I can just cancel them
I know that you need cash
But what the fuck’s up with that
You can do what you want
But get away from my shit

I’m starting to think that maybe we should require a basic knowledge of how babies are made, develop and what goes into actually carrying a baby to term AND giving birth before you can run for any fucking public office of any kind. I just cannot with this crap. I am surrounded by idiots that honest to god really think that you can remove and implant an ectopic pregnancy or that once an egg is fertilized it’s actually a person with thoughts and feelings. And some of them have actually given birth to actual full term humans, some have had miscarriages. I am over this shit. Over it. Now Georgia is actually letting you claim an unborn child on your taxes. What the fuck is wrong with these people?

A woman who has become a close girl friend lived in Wisconsin most of her life and only moved to Illinois about 6 years ago. She had been very confident that Ron Johnson was going down, but now she says that Wisconsin friends of hers are certain that Johnson is headed for victory. And the reason? The very real level of racism in the state. The Democratic nominee Mandela Barnes is an African-American and they believe that he cannot win. I don’t know Wisconsin politics, though I do know they rejected Russ Feingold for Johnson. Anyone here have insight into this?

Totally not a cult. This reads more like Scientology than the Republican Party.

Berks County Republican Committee questionnaire for primary winners sparks backlash (Reading, Penna. Eagle, August 10, 2022)

Jamie Kyle was elected in the May primary to serve as a Republican committeeperson.

She ran a write-in campaign for the seat in Douglass Township’s 2nd Precinct. And she won.

A few weeks after election day, Kyle received a letter from the Berks County elections office informing her that the election results had been certified and that she was the official winner of her race.

“You would think that would be the end of the story,” Kyle told the Berks County Elections Board during a meeting last week. “Unfortunately, it’s not.”

Shortly after getting the notice from the county, Kyle received another letter in the mail. This one was from the chairwoman of the credentials committee of the Berks County Republican Committee.

The letter directed Kyle to fill out an attached questionnaire so the credentials committee could determine her eligibility to be seated by the executive committee.

Kyle was confused. She had won the election, which in her mind meant the seat was hers. But now, the Republican committee was telling her that winning an election might not be enough.

“I was elected, so I didn’t understand why I was getting this letter,” she said. “It didn’t make sense.”

As Kyle perused the questionnaire, her confusion began to shift toward anger. Some of the questions seemed inappropriate, some seemed too personal.

She took issue with questions about whether she had ever changed her name other than because she had been married and about whether she had ever been convicted of a serious criminal offense. She balked at questions about her mental health history and about whether she agreed with a series of ideological statements.

“Some of the questions make you wonder what is going on,” she said.
Winner or not?

Kyle wasn’t alone in her angst over the letter and questionnaire she received. She was joined at the elections board meeting by two other duly elected Republican committee members who shared her concerns.

Did their election wins mean nothing? Could they be denied a seat they fairly won?

“The question is whether the votes from my constituents supporting me matter and I’m duly elected or this position is really only an appointment by the Berks County Republican Committee,” Kyle asked.

The two Republican county commissioners told the three that, while they found the questionnaires unusual and potentially problematic, they were powerless to do anything about them. The county is in charge of running the election, but it doesn’t have anything to do with what happens after the results are certified.

Clay Breece, the chairman of the county Republican committee, vigorously defended the questionnaires during an interview this week.

He repeatedly stated that the committee’s bylaws create the positions that appear on the ballot and the committee has the power to determine its own membership regardless of the results of an election.

“The bylaws define the process,” he said.

If they’re going to deny the votes of their own party members, what will they do with us? Plus, you’d think that Republicans fairly elected to a position would walk away from this kind of crap.

As of yet, she’s refused to answer the questionnaire. She and several others who won their elections also received these questionnaires. They have all complained to the county.

The county GOP says that the bylaws of the party are what determine whether people are seated, not elections.

It is! Well, maybe not.

Haggis is the liver, heart and lungs of the sheep, ground up and mixed with oats and lard, then stuffed into the cleaned and scrubbed stomach of the sheep, sealed and boiled.

This traditionally has been called a “pudding”, hence the line from Rabbie Burns calling the Haggis “the Master o’ the pudding race”.

Spam is ground ham bits and “formed” and canned and is consumed, by pounds per person most by Hawaiians. I can’t blame them. It’s great with scrambled eggs.

Top Florida education official tells schools they have no obligation to follow new federal Title IX non-discrimination guidance (CNN, July 29, 2022)

Just days after 22 states filed a lawsuit fighting the new US Department of Agriculture policy seeking to protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, Florida’s top education official is advising schools in his state to ignore the guidance.
In a letter, Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. tells superintendents, school boards, private school owners and charter school governing boards they have “no obligation” to follow the new Title IX equity rules laid out by the Biden administration.

There was none of course, and when I reported it to a manager, an robotic idiot girl (who is one of Gov Ducey’s aides now), I found myself out of a job a few weeks later in a layoff. This ongoing hard right Catholic/hard right wing Protestant circle jerk is at its eventual end, a mutually exclusive pact which just goes to show those level of abject depravity in their strategy for domination. Each side knows that once all the Liberals are killed, it will be Catholics vs. Evangelicals for the soul of the world… or so their thinking goes.

Ummm. In my area it’s going to be a three-way: between Catholics, Evangelicals and Mormons, all of whom are generally aligned right now, but will not be able to share power if they get their hands on it. Why? Because each group believes the other two are false religions / cults.

In different news:

This is a slice of life manga published intermittently in the later ’90s to 2006 set in a near future Japan where there’s been some sort of environmental disaster, the seas have risen and humanity is slowly fading away. It is unlike most other manga I’ve read, very calm and peaceful. I originally read this in a scanalation (bootleg Japanese to English translation & relettering) but decided to buy when a legal translation was announced last year. There’s some peculiar translation choices, like calling a particular character “Osprey” instead of transliterating “Misago.” I would have left that one. I also would have left the Japanese writing on the buildings in Yokohama but that’s just me. Four more volumes to come…I can’t wait!

This is an interesting article, but it also has some flaws. The author notes that the new radical right-wing youngsters are for a welfare state, but are not fans of democracy and are mostly Catholic religious fanatics. And yet he never draws to the obvious conclusion that they are basically nazis by their own definition.

Plus the assertion is that so-called new conservatives are trying to make conservatism into something illiberal. Ever since conservatism was defined it has opposed democracy and supported aristocracy or oligarchy. All they do is periodically change the window-dressing when they’re exposed for what they are.

Plus it is not illegal to have classified material sent to you if you didn’t solicit it (same with child exploitation material). It is only illegal if you attempt to hide it.

My understanding of the Great E-mail Headsplosion was that Hillary Clinton received documents which had a couple paragraphs marked (c) [confidential] which were not redacted. When they were found came the Great E-mail Hunt to which she testified before Congress for eleven hours.

AFAIK, the only documents that Comey testified as having the required markings to be treated as classified for purposes of federal law were two emailed copies of her daily schedule that had been classified as “Confidential.” Everything else was devoid of markings and was only deemed classified retroactively. Only compounding the BS parade was that Comey admitted a lot of those documents were digital scans of newspaper and magazine articles that were about programs or projects that the intel boys only decided after publication had info deemed “sensitive” or above.

Gentle music for the overnight, by an English composer, Earnest Tomlinson, of whom we know little but Wikipedia sez:

Tomlinson won several prestigious awards; the Composers’ Guild Award in 1965 and two Ivor Novello Awards - one for services to light music in 1970, the other for his full-length ballet Aladdin in 1975. For several years he was on the Executive Committee of the Composers’ Guild of Great Britain, including being its Chairman in 1964. In addition, he was from 1965 a composer-director of the Performing Rights Society.

Tomlinson was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), in the 2012 Birthday Honours, for services to music.

I spoke to my mother on the telephone this evening. Good family news (two items) behind the hide bar.

The first was I finally convinced her of the need to get the latest booster for CoVid-19. She was under the impression (due to all the FUD promoted by conservatives and libertarians) that is was ineffective.

Second: She finally was able to get past the endless bureaucracy with the state of Illinois in which the state has never paid her my late step-father’s teacher’s pension since he retired (run out of teaching by parents and Democratic aldermen for being an atheist) in 2015.

After I suggested she contact her local alderman and her state representative and senator, the office in Chicago which manages retirement plans for teachers called her yesterday afternoon about it to clear this up.

I have been supporting her so she can do things like pay her rent and eat. The city called her and said they will deposit tens of thousands of dollars in back retirement benefits tomorrow in her bank account.

Yes, well, my shit has traditionally been called a bowel movement, but three of them together still doesn’t add up to a symphony.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. We’re 48+ hours since the MAL search warrant, and coming up on 24 hours since Trump was deposed by the NY AG’s office where he took the 5th more than 400 times.

NYT: here’s how this is bad news for Biden.
Fox: this is unprecedented and DOJ and FBI should be defunded, Garland impeached, etc.

To a person, the GOP has decided to rally around the most corrupt and criminal person to ever hold office. Trump sought to end democracy and the GOP is fine with it - they control levers of power at the state and local levels in a number of states sufficient to throw election outcomes in their favor, regardless of how a state could vote against the GOP and for a Democrat. GOP has gone all cult/fascist white nationalist authoritarian strongman, and the media outside Fox doesn’t raise this red flag daily. Instead, they see only that Democrats were slow in getting agenda enacted in a 48/50/2 Senate and razor thin majority in the House, and downplay all the Biden Admin successes despite these challenges and straight up GOP obstruction and ongoing seditious conspiracy to end democracy.

That’s been the media sentiment, instead of focusing on the fact that Trump engaged in crimes to the point where FBI had probable cause to execute a search warrant on his MAL business to seek records of said crimes or to identify still other crimes.

Trump’s supporters haven’t come up with anything as a defense other than to claim that they were planted. That’s not how this works, since the judge signed off on the warrant - meaning that there was already evidence in DOJ possession that Trump engaged in criminal conduct. This was just to secure *additional* evidence.

The depositions basically show that Trump knows he’s fucked in every way imaginable - and his lawyers got him to shut the fuck up for the first time in years when it matters.

Trump is an insufferable know it all, and always thinks he’s the smartest in the room, so for him to take the 5th shows that somewhere deep in the few firing neurons left that he knows he’s in real trouble. NY AG is dealing with a civil suit, so the evidenciary standards for getting a win in court are lower than in criminal court - but inferences can be made about taking the 5th instead of answering.

NY AG has all the evidence they need to win; this is the icing on the cake, and it further opens Trump to tax evasion charges at the federal level too (because lying on state taxes about valuations has consequences for federal tax filings as well.

Does the NY state income tax form still essentially *start* from a number you bring over from your Federal 1040?

I seem to recall doing them myself in the early 1970s.* And that the initial gross income on the NY form was taken from your Federal 1040 gross income.

* - I was in my teens and my income was some bank deposit interest plus a bit of cash made from summer jobs. My father thought that doing my own tax forms, even for minimal amounts, would be good practice for when I was older and would have more complex returns. Also a good way to learn about the different bits of the tax forms (federal vs state), deductibles, etc. etc. In retrospect I consider it a good idea since I did my own taxes up until the 1990s when I started supervising one of my parents’ trusts and since an accountant was doing those taxes I figured he might as well do mine as well.

Probably by then they knew that he’d dodge (take the 5th) and had questions ready that responding the 5th on would carry heavier inferences of guilt.

Also, aren’t the Trump spawn also doing depositions separately regarding this same, or related, cases. Unless there is a completely cooperative stonewall I wonder if one or more of them are going to intentionally, or unintentionally, throw Daddy under the steamroller.

My taxes became very simple the last couple of years since the standard deduction was increased so much that it isn’t worth it to itemize anymore. My state return is more work because the free national tax software doesn’t do the intricacies of Kentucky income tax that save me money, so I have to do my state return on paper.

Man convicted in federal scheme elected to Rock Island County GOP

Aman who was sentenced to more than six years in federal prison in a scheme to sell unlicensed drugs, claiming to treat or even cure the terminally ill, now is serving as a vice chairman for the Rock Island County GOP.

Lawrence Stowe, 69, also has revived his efforts to solicit donations for medical treatments out of his brother’s home in Moline. He said Wednesday that he was “innocent from the beginning” and intends to prove that several federal agencies, the federal judge and the TV program ‘60 Minutes’ all were out to get him.

Stowe admitted as part of his guilty plea in federal court that, beginning in January 2006, he used several businesses, including The Stowe Foundation, to advertise and promote a medical treatment protocol for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s, and other neurological diseases.

I was a programmer straight out of university in one building with 300 new hires working on the 1st generation of digital telephone exchanges. The other 1000 odd people on site (down from around 10,000 at peak) were working on equipment for electromechanical exchanges (crossbar, strowger).

The huge canteen was run on strict cost reduction principles, you brought your own knife and fork, or bought a plastic knife and fork, that you could rinse and reuse.

The food was also the cheapest possible. Braised ox tail. Braised beef heart. Offal you’ve never heard of.

I don’t remember hearing about the original plan, but, in 2020, Georgia, via Kemp, got the approval from Trump to implement a system that would block access to the ACA signup website, forcing people to have to register with private companies directly for health care. Biden has rescinded that.

This is where my grandparents lived. It’s the first house my parents brought me to when I came home from the hospital and has been in the family over 60 years. This morning I walked out of it for the last time and took this photo.

I have so many memories from this place.

Soon, the lot will be sold and someone will probably tear the old house down and build a new one.

Change sucks sometimes, but I’m at peace with things.

Sometimes I look at my life and get struck in the face by how much change has occurred. The childhood home I spent the most time in burned to the ground a decade ago in a suspected insurance fraud incident. The houses my parents lived in growing up have both been sold to new owners. This house I live in right now has already changed immensely just in the last two years.

My childhood home, in South Pasadena, California, still stands. The current owners haven’t really done much with it beyond a different exterior paint scheme.

It was built by my dad back in 1958.

It is a sort of odd thing dealing with things like this. Attachment to nostalgia and memories combined with the necessity of being able to move on as well. (I once upset a friend of mine by telling him that of course I expected to outlive my parents. And that it was something that would need to be moved on from.)

I haven’t seen my maternal grandparents house near Buffalo in years. That was sold in the 1970s when they moved to Tucson for a downsizing and what they saw as better weather.

My paternal grandparents house in PA coal country is currently owned and lived in by one of my first cousins. I have been there in the past ten years and the exterior looks much the same. In fact, chunks of the borough itself seem unchanged since the 1970s including a number of storefronts among the main street (Though the McCrory’s 5&10 is now a different business.)

re: #283 Backwoods_Sleuth

this thread, yikes!

i found some articles on this floating around going back to the middle of June

this one gave me the most confidence

We didn’t mention these laws because the circuit courts long ago declared that they only apply to unlawful items. So, since abortion is legal and the FDA has approved distribution of mifepristone as safe and effective, including by mail, these are lawful activities and items, thus the law, as interpreted by the courts, doesn’t apply. Even now that some states have made abortion illegal, the pills still are legal under federal law. This is why no one in any of the litigation, regulatory comments, or other advocacy around medication abortion for the past decades has raised these laws, even the Trump administration in the litigation about mailing pills that went to the Supreme Court.

To put a finer point on it, any contrary interpretation than what I explained here would ban abortion everywhere because every device used to perform an abortion in a clinic (forceps, cannulas, etc.) would be banned from being shipped to the clinics (none of the clinics make their own!). These are lawful items for lawful procedures so they can be sent in the mail.

My first job was at Plessey Edge Lane in Liverpool, one of the big 3 telephone equipment manufacturers in the UK (GEC, Plessey and STC).

It was an incredible cultural shock for me.

And delicious.

I was going to use oxtail in some soup, but when I got to the checkout, I realized it was like 19 bucks for two pieces of ox tail. I was like what the fuck? this is the part of an ox no one would use for anything except soup seasoning and they want tenderloin prices for it?

This is where my grandparents lived. It’s the first house my parents brought me to when I came home from the hospital and has been in the family over 60 years. This morning I walked out of it for the last time and took this photo.

I have so many memories from this place.

Soon, the lot will be sold and someone will probably tear the old house down and build a new one.

Change sucks sometimes, but I’m at peace with things.

The farmhouse and barn where I was born is not owned by my family anymore. We had about 145 acre when I was born. Parents sold the place to grandma and grandpa when dad decided to move us to California in ‘62. Dad got sick of Cal after a few years and we came back. Grands sold the farmhouse, barn and about 8 acre of the land in early 80’s. They had a trailer set on the remaining acreage by the access road. After they died it was willed to my dad’s sister. She and her husband built a house on a plot of the land. So about 135 or so acre are still in the family.

Aug. 11 (UPI) — FBI Director Christopher Wray, the bureau’s top official who signed off on the raid of former President Donald Trump’s home in Florida this week, has condemned threats coming from radical far-right corners of social media in response to the operation.

Wray spoke publicly on Wednesday for the first time since the FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Fla. Dozens of agents executed a search warrant at Trump’s home there in connection with possible missing and classified documents from Trump’s White House.

All presidential records are required by federal law to be turned over to the National Archives.

At an event in Omaha on Wednesday, Wray took a few questions from reporters and condemned the threats of violence in far-right circles like Gab, the social site frequented by White supremacists.

Yup, had that.

re: #276 Dopamine Fish

Sometimes I look at my life and get struck in the face by how much change has occurred. The childhood home I spent the most time in burned to the ground a decade ago in a suspected insurance fraud incident. The houses my parents lived in growing up have both been sold to new owners. This house I live in right now has already changed immensely just in the last two years.

I grew up in courtyard building with 21 apartment owned by an aunt’s in-laws. It was a very quiet neighborhood on Chicago’s west side. But the violence of the 60’s transformed the area; when I returned home from college for the summer, the National Guard was patrolling the street a half block away. My parents moved to the north side in about 1967 and a few years later the building was burnt to the ground, a victim of the violence of that time.

AP

so here’s why Lindsey didnt show up:

Fulton County Chief Senior Assistant District Attorney Donald Wakeford made that argument Wednesday during a federal court hearing on a request by Graham to quash his subpoena. Brian Lea, an attorney for Graham, argued that Graham’s position as a senator protects him from having to appear before the special grand jury in the investigation into whether former President Donald Trump and his allies committed crimes as they sought to overturn his narrow election loss in Georgia.

Graham’s attorneys — including Don McGahn, who served as White House counsel under Trump — successfully moved the issue of whether the subpoena should be quashed from Fulton County Superior Court to federal court.

U.S. District Judge Leigh Martin May said she hopes to issue a ruling Friday but that it may take her until Monday to decide whether Graham should have to testify.

I don’t buy that only 6-8 people knew about it. I am sure Mar-A-Lago has some sort of facilities or grounds keepers team and if the facilities manager knew about the install which he would I bet the whole team knows. Not to mention any other staff that happened to see a work crew dragging the safe in and, and the work crew itself if it was an outside company, and anyone they may have told that they were installing a safe at mar-a-lago today etc.

Yeah but their are countless MVNOs that resell service on the major carriers at some extremely good rates, and I have tested many of them and the service is as good as the major carriers. You do get into the finger pointing thing though if there is some sort of issue which is tiresome.

A lot of the MVNOs also don’t support international roaming so if that is something you need you only have a few options.

Now do epinephrine (epi-pens).

NB: the way the company keeps it expensive (the drug itself is way the hell out of patent, and cheap to produce) is because they own the patent for the injector.

Which, BTW, was developed under federal contract back when the military wanted all their troops to carry atropine just-in-case. The manufacturer went under when the gov’t stopped issuing nerve-gas-antidote pens… Joe Manchin’s daughter’s company bought the patent and hiked the price.

Texas religious fanatics at it again.

“…Now, in the video that Weston found online, she was telling the school board that a local Christian pastor, rather than librarians, should decide which books should be allowed on public school shelves. “He would never steer you wrong,” she said.

The clip ended with the woman striding away from the lectern, and the audience showering her with applause.

Weston, 28, said his heart was racing as he watched and rewatched the video — and not only because he opposes censorship. He’d instantly recognized the speaker.

It was his mother, Monica Brown.

The same woman, he said, who’d removed pages from science books when he was a child to keep him and his siblings from seeing illustrations of male and female anatomy. The woman who’d always warned that reading the wrong books or watching the wrong movies could open the door to sinful temptation. And the one, he said, who’d effectively cut him off from his family four years ago after he came out as gay.”

We will probably never know; Putin may though.

Whatever Putin or Bonesaw was asking for.

Hmmm, didn’t Trump just say “no one has gotten to the bottom of 9/11”? Maybe, nah, rank speculation.

re: #419 Crush White Nationalism

No. We already have a problem with policing by goons who hide their identity.

Correct

I saw a random Twitter person say that they were nuclear-related. Now, I don’t put a lot of stock in random Twitter people, but that would definitely explain the urgency, especially if the DOJ has information that they were shown or sold to a Russian national, and crazy Comrade Putin has been threatening nuclear war.

re: #413 No Malarkey!

Not that they wouldn’t anyway, but the fact we may never be able to know any details about these documents will make it easier for the Right to lie about them.

The FBI should start wearing ski masks when executing search warrants from now on to protect their identity so random whackos don’t take out their friends and family.

I never thought I would see the day that we would have to worry about death squads in the U.S.

We may learn something based on the severity of the charges (if any)

Sadly, we have an unofficial cartel here in Czech Republic when it comes to mobile telephony. And the Czech Telecommunications Authority straight-up refuses to do anything about it.

Sounds like a job for… The Commission!
