Washington Post: FBI Search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Related to Nuclear Weapons Documents

Crime • Views: 22,667

It’s been a crazy news day, but I was not expecting this one to drop, and it gave me chills: FBI search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago related to nuclear documents, sources say. (Gift link; no paywall.)

Classified documents relating to nuclear weapons were among the items FBI agents sought in a search of former president Donald Trump’s Florida residence on Monday, according to people familiar with the investigation.

Experts in classified information said the unusual search underscores deep concern among government officials about the types of information they thought could be located at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club and potentially in danger of falling into to the wrong hands.

The people who described some of the material that agents were seeking spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. They did not offer additional details about what type of information the agents were seeking, including whether it involved weapons belonging to the United States or some other nation. Nor did they say if such documents were recovered as part of the search. A Trump spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Justice Department and FBI declined to comment.

Weren’t the Rosenbergs executed for similar crimes?

One has to think the urgency of the raid was motivated by evidence of impending (or ongoing) sale of classified material.

Number of classified nuclear documents at the Obama Presidential Library: still 0.

So this explains why they said evidence was planted. This is a nuclear-level crime. Pun intended.

Nuclear espionage would seem to point to Prince Bonesaw or a close associate. The Russians or Chinese might want nuclear security information, with a view to sabotaging our command and control but they don’t need anything technical, not enough to pay Donnie’s likely asking price at any rate. Bonesaw, otoh, would pay billions for data that could make the Saudis long-sought nuclear capability a reality.

And before we chide ourselves for jumping to crazy conclusions, what other possible reason would there be for Trump to have documents related to nuclear weapons in the Mar a Lago stuff? One could argue that stuff that he thought was embarrassing to his presidency, or that might well get him indicted, would be stuff he’d hold on to with the grip of death, but why would he have nuclear documents, other than to sell them? I doubt they have any sense a sale went through, because if they did, they wouldn’t be pussy-footing around for months and months. Completely off topic, but listening to Emotional Rescue (the album) for the first time tonight. This is actually a pretty solid album. Not a great album, but solid. Even the title song isn’t horrible when it’s encountered as part of the album, rather than the overplayed single.

As with anything so important, I’ll believe it when more time goes by.

These kinds of things are what news outlets desire, and I am not sure if the WaPo vetted their sources as well as they think.

Presidents have access to nuclear information, but that is the command side of the national military structure. Things like launch codes, and the disposition of nuclear forces, etc. All those things can be changed, so I doubt that the security of the US was endangered.

The only real damage can be to Trump and his clique.

re: #23 steve_davis

Yes, embarrassing things, like having to change launch codes because Trump mentioned something to Putin in their meeting.

I think you’re right. This was a YUGE step to take, searching the residence of a former president. If it was just for nuclear codes that are changed regularly anyway, that would be bad, but I can’t see it triggering an operation like this.

Who knows. We have very limited info right now, and the FBI has been known to fuck up.

I’m thinking samples of small but highly specialized items needed for fabrication of nuclear weapons. This could be things like micro-switches, specialized fittings for machine tools, even cutting and polishing agents like super-special sandpaper and grinding/polishing grit.

I disagree. Having worked with classified material my entire career, single pieces of material may not, in themselves, reveal much. However, a bunch of material, when analyzed as a whole can reveal much, much more beyond what’s in individual docs. They can also reveals sources and methods. In short, the material is classified at such a high level because dissemination can result in extremely severe harm to the US.

From last thread:

re: #90 Belafon

Jeez, I had to watch the video three times before I could believe it. But the rockets from the right hand launcher are going pretty much straight up!

The Russian Grad rocket launcher system was developed in the early 1960s to replace the World War 2 Katyusha rocket system. Up to, at least the early 1990’s, the rockets were unguided. And not very accurate either. They are fired in huge numbers under the maxim “Quantity has a quality of its own.”

I assume that the rocket launcher is shooting that way because they were told to shoot and there is a building or other obstacle in the way. (Ie they are hiding behind something because they think it will reduce return fire.) And if they shot low angle instead of high angle, the debris and shrapnel from the obstacle just in front of them would shower back on them.

What does this mean?

Basically those rockets are going to go up until they run out of steam and then fall back down. Add to that any winds in the thousands of feet upward and downward that they travel. (And a rocket has a larger surface area to catch winds than a cannon shell has.) All of those rockets are not likely to travel far horizontally. Excepting whatever randomness the wind adds.

If those rockets are unguided, the ones going straight up are going to travel the least from the launcher. The other ones are probably going to land not very far away. You know, where one’s own troops are most likely to be. In which case, their neighbors will not be pleased. Friendly fire isn’t.

“Once the rocket goes up, I don’t care where it comes down. That’s not my department says Werner Von Braun.”

Who else hopes there’s video recording of when they break this fact to the Tangerine Traitor?

But this wouldn’t make sense since the FBI would not raid his home for a bunch of expired passcodes or plans. This had to be something majorly important. This had to outweigh the shitstorm falling on the DOJ this week. They would not have done this for something that is harmless.

Or perhaps the source made claims about the documents that cannot be verified until officials actually examine them in detail. It is certainly possible that this will turn out to be a false alarm based on a report from someone who was either mistaken or who is a Trump asset trying to deflect from normal bad news, such as Trump’s 440 5th amendment assertions. We will have to wait to see the truth on this.

My braindead Trumpster FB friend had a long post today that ended with a troubling warning — a warning that reflects the dangers we are now facing because of this cult — a danger vividly demonstrated today by the Trump fanatic attacking the FBI:

A thought comes to mind that bears consideration.
If a dog gets kicked over and over and over, at some point the dog will bite the abuser. The dog is not to blame. The abuser is.

And it doesn’t even have to be classified. When I was in the Navy (Submarines), we had port of calls, that weren’t classified (per se) information, but not public info either, canceled because someones wives were overheard talking about when we would arrive there, how long we would be there and when we were leaving in public.

So very true. Back when I was just a wee engineer, I was working on a highly classified job building some equipment for the government. As a test of security, an uncleared person who worked in supply chain, was asked to looked at some unclassified documents for the project, purchase orders, specs, and other mundane data. After reviewing it, this person was asked what he knew about the project from his review. To the utter shock of the people running this test, he was able to correctly state much of what this system could do and speculate on its purpose. Changes were immediately made to the entire process. The guy who was asked to do this experiment, was briefed on the program and then immediately debriefed. Why? Because now he was subject to the rules, restrictions, and penalties relating to having access to classified material which is a lifetime commitment.

That’s not the way they see it. They see Trump as the martyr and hero who was harassed since his 2016 election and who was never given a chance by the dreaded “fake news” MSM or evil Democrats. The 2020 election was stolen from him — Biden got only 71 million votes, not 81 million. Trump won in a landslide and the peaceful protestors who were at the Capitol on January 6 have been jailed for nothing except exercising their first amendment rights.

Hopefully the allegation that Trump possessed highly classified nuclear documents that he refused to return will turn out to be true. If Trump actually tried selling or giving the material to other nations, that would be so much better and would likely succeed in bringing him down. If this turns out to be a nothing burger Trump will become immeasurably stronger and will likely succeed in his efforts to destroy our nation.

When I was in the Navy (aviation intermediate maintenance for electronic countermeasures equipment), we had a test bench publication of several hundred unclassified pages, with a single introductory paragraph marked (s) Secret, rendering the entire publication Secret.

I submitted a suggestion up the chain-of-command to remove the first page in a document update to remove the secret paragraph, since it really added nothing to understanding the introduction.

My request was rejected by Naval Air Systems Command. The explanation of the rejection was that even though the information about the test bench was unclassified, it could be used to reverse-engineer the equipment tested on it, which was also secret (and even the external boxes themselves were classified confidential).

Trump’s lying and has no intent to let this be released without a fight. He could release it himself right now.

The DOJ is constrained by not releasing classified information (something which might be in those two attachments), or by releasing how they got the information needed for the search warrant.

Trump is under no such compunction and could release the information this second. Yet he’s not.

“Lyrically, the song tells a story about a 1965 power cut that forced aircraft in New York City to remain airborne, with the power outage forcing a Scandinavian flight to detour to Kennedy airport in the dark.

The flight mentioned, “Scandinavian 101”, was actually Scandinavian Airlines flight 911 and was likely flown on a Douglas DC-8, as the 747 was still under development at the time and only entered commercial airline service in 1969, four years after the outage. The incident caused a major overhaul in safety and prompted the usage of reserve fuel tanks, as Scandinavian 911 almost used up all its fuel.”

UC put up a video today of former Aussie PM Rudd presenting his take on the current leadership of PRC and what it means.

His belief is that the current leader of China is going to increase his activism in making China a global leader and compete with the US in that regard.

Implied is that unlike his predecessor, Xi Jinping is not going to wait until the sweet-bye-and-bye future century for Taiwan to fall under PRC control.

It’s all a formula for disaster. I don’t think the US or China can win in this confrontation. Both will try to puppet-regime any conflict instead of going head on. Japan should be worried. Korea and Vietnam too.

Liz Cheney was fully onboard with Trump’s policies until he lost the election. Even knowing how his FP views were antithetical to everything her family supported, she saw that her personal political survival required this concession. No profile in courage there. But once he lost, she felt free to abandon this support because she believed that he could not recover. She did see how her party remained in thrall to him — but maybe her father’s connections revealed how dangerous Trump was to our survival as a major world power.

Yes, I agree that the PRC assertiveness is a formula for disaster. I understand that Japan, Korea and Australia are all very concerned.

As I understand it, there are a couple of wild cards. The first is if the GQP, in particular tfg wins in 2024. The second is whether tfg compromised US and allied security in the Pacific.

Remembering that his family, Ivanka in particular, got some sweetheart licensing agreements. I wonder what else we do not know.

I have no doubt that US Intelligence has been doing damage assessments on tfg’s activities for at least 2 years now. And probably been trying to fix things as well.

I have no insider information, but I do wonder if Putin chose when to invade Ukraine because he expected some of the intelligence information he got from tfg to become obsolete.

re: #205 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Personally I don’t like the mindset of the US war-gamers.

Generals and Admirals always fight their war, the war based on their beliefs.

And also I think it is absurd to think China and US have to go to war.

While I am no fan of the isolationist glibertarians, we still need to consider a basic premise of these war games: that the US has to go to war over Taiwan.

Afghanistan should have taught us that trying to shape Asia into our own image usually won’t work, perhaps will never work.

It’s rather imperialistic of the US to think we have to be in control of the world.

Yep, pretty much every “legal expert” in the GQP ranks is now demanding to see the affidavit and declaring that its exclusion means that the DOJ is hiding something. Personally, the sudden interest in the affidavit seems like a desperate search for a scapegoat, trying to narrow down the list of possible moles so they have somebody to blame for this “hoax.”

One of my coworkers told me that her mother in law has to be tested for monkeypox.

Why? Because her MIL’s physical therapist HAS monkeypox. Apparently some high muckety-muck at the org that employs the PT called her Wednesday all apologetic and said the MIL needs testing.

And if MIL tests positive, then coworker has to be tested, because the MIL lives with her and she’s MIL’s chaperone, etc.

But I was thinking tonight that MIL is probably—hopefully—my age or older and probably was vaccinated for smallpox. At least I can hope.

I will be *quite* honest, I didn’t expect monkeypox to hit so close so quickly.

To me, it meant that they thought that nobody outside the US mattered at all. Which, I’m sure impressed a lot of our allies. And led directly to tfg.

My assumption has been that the invasion of Iraq was militarily unnecessary and done for personal (threatened shrub’s daddy) and domestic (re-election and corruption) reasons.

A big military problem in fighting the PRC is that they have a large and capable military (near peer) and we would be fighting within sight of their homeland. (Ie force projection.)

We have the best military force projection capability in the world. But it may not be enough. And even if it proves to be, the cost is likely to be terrible. Which is what the wargames seem to indicate.

Yeah, just like everything else she has been accused of, Trump has proven to be the exact sort of traitorous asshole Hillary Clinton was accused of being. Not only were classified documents knowingly removed from the White House, but they were kept secret from the Feds until somebody dropped a dime to the press, after which only some of the documents were returned while others were retained with the only concession an additional lock on the room where they were being kept. Reports are that some or even many of those documents were classified at the highest levels that require a paper trail just to view. So even if it turns out none of them contain nuclear secrets, the fact that he stole them and kept them in his private residence would warrant multiple felony charges.

There’s no real “good” spin on all this, the man is a hazard to national security and should face prison time for his actions. The fact that there are tens of millions of our fellow Americans who are not only defending him, but actually think that he is the greatest president ever who deserves a second term, makes me very uncomfortable imagining the future of this nation.

The real shitstorm would start raging if (and who knows, maybe it’s now just a matter of when) an arrest warrant is issued for Donald Trump.

Hoo, boy. Something like that would have to be kept on the Q-T, very hush-hush (to borrow a phrase from one my favorite neo-noir films), because if the MAGAts got wind of it before it happened, there would likely be terrorist incidents by Trump’s cultists from sea to shining sea. And there almost certainly will be in the aftermath of such an arrest, but at least the Feds can buy a little time to prepare for such an eventuality by playing their cards close to their chest.

Completely OT, but it looks like Anne Heche isn’t gonna make it:

Anne Heche’s family and friends had been hoping for a miracle following the Emmy-winning actor’s horrific car crash last Friday. It didn’t come, and her closest ones are making the difficult decision to take her off life support after she was pronounced brain dead. She is being kept on a ventilator until it’s determined whether any organs not damaged in the crash and subsequent fire can be donated.

“We want to thank everyone for their kind wishes and prayers for Anne’s recovery and thank the dedicated staff and wonderful nurses that cared for Anne at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills hospital.

“Unfortunately, due to her accident, Anne Heche suffered a severe anoxic brain injury and remains in a coma, in critical condition. She is not expected to survive,” a rep for Heche’s family and friends told Deadline.

Shane Vaughn isn’t content to be the shitty Christians who leave fake $20 bills for tips to waitstaff. He went all in on shitty.

Preacher/insurance agent faces fraud charges (WAFB-TV, Baton Rouge, February 3, 2010)

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A south Louisiana preacher was slapped with $100,000 in fines on top of a slew of criminal charges. John Vaughn, who also acted as an insurance agent, recently had his license yanked after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars.

Police describe Vaughn as a chameleon, changing his look and name repeatedly. The 37-year-old is accused of stealing a 2-year-old’s identity to defraud a life insurance company. He is accused of swiping $20,000 from an annuity he sold to a person that didn’t even exist.

It took months for Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon’s office to pin Vaughn down and issue him cease and desist orders. Donelon said Vaughn has two licenses under separate aliases.

“We have shut down his operation,” Donelon said. “It does anger you when folks take advantage of a profession and the trust that comes with it.”

He stated there are 100,000 insurance license holders in the state of Louisiana and about once a week, someone gets theirs revoked. Donelon explained the victims are often unsuspecting customers who find themselves uninsured in a time of great need.

Vaughn is also charged with bank fraud, issuing worthless checks and felony theft. Currently, he is being held in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a $25,000 bond. He was booked on similar charges in other parts of the state, including Livingston and Jefferson parishes.

The article has several photographs of him trying to mix up his look. Currently he runs under the name “Shane.” I’m sure he’s forgiven though.

For now, I’m sticking with my conjecture that most of the documents taken by Trump relate to dirt on the people/companies with whom his inner circle interact.

No, the President can’t declassify Top Secret documents merely by having magic thoughts.

Mr. Hertling’s thread also doesn’t address the Department of Energy’s classification system (Restricted Data/Formerly Restricted Data).

The President cannot declassify RD/FRD information. RD/FRD is used in combination with Confidential/Secret/Top Secret, and specifically applies to atomic weapon programme data. Making information Formerly Restricted Data only means it now can be shared with other parts of the government in accordance with the law surrounding classified information.

The Atomic Energy Act of 1946 creates the category of Restricted Data:

Anyone who communicates, transmits, or discloses… any document, writing, sketch, photograph, plan, model, instrument, appliance, note, or information involving or incorporating restricted data… to any individual or person, or attempts or conspires to any of the foregoing, with intent to injure the United States or with intent to secure an advantage to any foreign nation, upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by death or imprisonment for life… or, by a fine of not more than $20,000 or imprisonment for not more than twenty years, or both.

As such, since the act includes “all data,” it creates a system of information which is “born secret,” even if it wasn’t created by the US Government. As such, it is a form of prior restraint, which is unconstitutional. However, that has only been tested one time, in the case United States v The Progressive (1979). In that case, the Department of Energy exercised the doctrine of “born secret” to assert The Progressive magazine, about to reveal the existence of the hydrogen bomb obtained from publicly available sources. DOE asserted the article if published would violate the Atomic Energy Act of 1954 (an update to the 1946 act creating the Formerly Restricted Data classification).

The case initially imposed an injunction against publication. The writers and publishers refused to accept a security clearance from the government, which would put a restraint on their speech. Their lawyers did receive security clearances to represent them in court, but were not allowed to talk to their clients about the case.

The government dropped the case against The Progressive when the information was published elsewhere. In the Wikipedia article above, how that information was published elsewhere turned out to be a strange turn of events, involving Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sen. John McCain, and even a college contest to try to design a hydrogen bomb (the winner being the first contestant to have DOE classify their design).

I remain doubtful, too, about this whole China-wargame thing.

It does not seem feasible to me to have any conflict between the US and China that does not involve global disaster, strategic disaster, and nukes.

Look at how the Korean non-war lingered on because the PRC just did some support for tiny little North Korea.

Within minutes of any US-China conflict Southern Command will close the Panama Canal (regardless of what the Panamanians think.)

We’ll pressure Egypt to close the Suez Canal.

All shipping worldwide will be subject to warfare side-effects.

Most of the shipping in the world involves imports or exports to either the US or China (or both.)

China has a surplus of some 17 million males in its population. Even assuming not all of them are military age, they could still easily lose 6 or 7 million soldiers in a war and even if they only make limited territorial or strategic gains, it would ease their demographics…

Their chief concern would be whether the economic and political fallout would be more detrimental to the West than to themselves.

Folks are speculating that if Donald Trump actually had atomic weapon information, he might have made it available to Saudi Arabia (Jared Kushner’s $2 billion being the payment) or perhaps the Russian Federation (considering his seeming collaboration on other things with Vladimir Putin).

How about North Korea? Trump had the “love letter” from Kim Jong Un. I wonder how much North Korea would cough up for US atomic weapon technical specifications, particularly since they have scientists who can make sense of it. Plus, North Korea’s nuke problem has been making it small enough to fit on something smaller than a freighter.

RE: The former guy planting the “nuclear secrets” rumor as a tactic to mitigate whatever it was he was actually caught with: It is a slimy thing that America’s most popular crime family would try to do. It is bolstered by the fact that the government can’t very well come out and say, “Well, akshually.” However, I will still refer back to the fact that this search warrant was signed and approved at the highest levels of the DOJ. People calling this “unprecedented” aren’t wrong, but that would require something truly unprecedented to warrant such an action, and let’s face it: If they had evidence that he was selling American nuclear secrets (even if it was just “operational data” around our nuclear handling procedures), that would absolutely be grounds for an oh-shit, get-those-back-now search warrant. We’ll have to see what happens when the indictments come down; because you can’t tell me that there won’t be indictments after the execution of a freaking search warrant.

I’m struggling to comprehend the enormousness of the implications here, in the historical sense. Like, you can read about Julius and Ethel Rosenberg in some American history textbooks, notably those from the Cold War and immediate post-Cold War era, like I grew up with; can you imagine the narrative that will be painted around Trump, his presidency, and this whole kerfuffle? Forget Benedict Arnold, here we have a FORMER FUCKING PRESIDENT willing to sell our most sensitive secrets for nothing more than petty cash so he can afford to get sued for being a criminal. And the worst part is that an entire fucking political party is STILL swimming toward that sinking ship, and people will STILL vote for them.

Speaking of China, in watching the World War Two channel special on the Trident conference:

Youtube Video

..

… I can’t help but think that derogating the war in China is in the causal chain to why we have the issue today of the PRC threatening Taiwan.

While I don’t blame the UK for wanting to focus on total defeat of Germany, especially as not long after that conference Germany will be raining down rockets onto England, in hindsight I think it is clear that there really was no risk of Stalin trying to sign a peace deal with Hitler to get the USSR out of the war.

Churchill worried about that and I guess it was not unreasonable for him to have that worry, but I think now 80 years later we know that Nazi Germany was never going to win the war after Hitler decided to kill millions and millions of people living in the USSR.

But what did happen was that Mao took over China.

Which is why earlier I mentioned that I’ll a bit hesitant to believe the WaPo story. It is not clear to me that WaPo vetted well their source.

For now, I’m sticking with my conjecture that most of the documents taken by Trump relate to dirt on the people/companies with whom his inner circle interact.

As a matter of regular business, the FBI and the CIA will have done extensive research into any associates of Jared/Ivanka/Jr/the-dumber-one/Melania.

Let’s remember we’re dealing with DJT, a man who’d burn it all down because we, as a nation and of an entire electorate, weren’t sufficiently grateful for His Excellence and therefore undeserving of a civilized country and society because we didn’t reelect him.

Trump would 100% sell anything to get back at US and in this case, the money would be a bonus. His fragile wounded pride takes precedence over everything including money.

Anne Heche has been officially declared brain dead and will be taken off life support after suffering a brain injury in a fiery LA car crash last week, her friends and family have said.

The actress, 53, who is in a coma and in critical condition, will stay on a ventilator to determine whether any of her remaining organs are viable to be donated, per Heche’s wishes.

Heche, who’s been hospitalized at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills hospital north of Los Angeles, suffered a ‘severe anoxic brain injury’ in the August 5 crash, according to a statement released Thursday night on behalf of her family and friends. Such an injury is caused by a sustained lack of oxygen to the brain.

So, the spousal-unit, youngest boy-child, girl-child and her fiancé, the mother of the girl-child and her sister and husband, and a few other people — total 11 — are jetting of to Guyana tomorrow. Equatorial land of mostly rainforest, malaria, yellow fever, typhoid, and rabid dogs. Though I expect and hope not to be in contact with the rabid dogs.

We are taking two trips into the rainforest to go howler monkey viewing along with various waterfalls. I am not actually sure which trip is what because I am not in charge — thank Chthulu. Two of our party are Guyanese ex-pats and we are working with a cousin who still lives there, do hopefully we will leave with our identify intact.

Snark aside, I am very excited about this trip. It will be my first to an equatorial country. Unfortunately, we failed on getting a reservation at a restaurant in Georgetown that we wanted to feast at.

State dept. says travel warning to Guyana is ‘don’t go’ but we’re relatively unconcerned. Monkey pox in Guyana seems to be pretty low, but don’t eat bush meat this trip, which is causing son many sads. He wants to always sample the local and/or different foods.

Trump’s history with nuclear weapons is a long and fucked up one.

He thought you could nuke hurricanes.
He coddled Jong Un and gave North Korea time to develop its nukes.
He abrogated the Iran JCPOA, giving Iran the pretext to restart its nuclear program.

Why would Trump need classified nuclear secrets unless he was intent on using them to profit personally and directly, and all those around him who knew he had those documents or would profit from them are likewise conspiring to violate national security.

Who’d be a likely beneficiary of receiving copies of those documents?

It’s a long list, but Saudi Arabia is chief among them - as an offset to Iran’s nuclear program. They may have the money to make it happen, but not the technical means. It’s been understood that Saudis would likely get their nukes via Pakistan should Iran achieve nuclear weapon functionality. Getting nuclear tech means from the US would leapfrog the Pakistanis since we’ve got far more advanced designs.

Any of our rivals or enemies would pay for the nuclear technology we have. They’d be able to leapfrog their own technology limitations. We know how this works from earlier classified leaks. Take the Toshiba Kongsberg scandal, where the Soviets were looking to improve their subs. They got access to our technologies on propeller design and milling, and were able to advance their design significantly, making their subs far quieter in the process.

Trump engaging in espionage is just the latest set of crimes, and the GOP will predictably cover for Trump, because they are compromised and complicit in still other crimes. They are inextricably tied because of their combined complicity and criminal conduct.

Wyoming Ninth District Judge Melissa Owens imposed an injunction against Wyoming’s abortion ban trigger law a few minutes before it was to go in effect.

The injunction will remain in effect as the case winds its way through the Wyoming court system, until it reaches the state Supreme Court.

As for now, abortion remains legal in Wyoming.

In her order, Owens wrote that plaintiffs met their burden in establishing irreparable harm if the abortion ban were to go into effect. Plaintiffs Dr. Giovannina Anthony and Dr. Rene Hinkle, both OB-GYNs, could be subject to “felony prosecution, loss of professional licensure, and up to fourteen years of imprisonment for providing evidence-based health care to her patients in need of abortion services,” the judge wrote.

Owens also addressed the potential merits of the case, writing “the Court could find that the Wyoming Constitution affords all Wyoming citizens with a fundamental right to make their own health care decisions and that includes a Wyoming woman’s right to make her own decision regarding abortion.”

Plaintiffs in the case include a pregnant woman, a woman of child-bearing age, the two OB-GYNs and two nonprofits that aim to help women access abortions.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Owens expressed particular concern over the abortion ban’s exemptions. It remains unclear how an individual might obtain an abortion under the rape and incest exemptions without running afoul of a prosecutor, she said.

Japan, South Korea, Taiwan?

And while I consider Afghanistan to be a country that doesn’t want anyone in charge, there are places that would rather be under western influence than China.

my question is after the june subpoena and return of the 15 boxes, why didnt he hide the rest of this stuff better?

Because he’s not a very good criminal. He thought he could bluster and bulkshit his way around this like he does all his other business dealings.

The core problem is that Trump was always a security risk. Always.

Had he been anyone else seeking a job requiring clearances, he would have been rejected out of hand. Jared and Ivanka were rejected for their clearances but Trump overrode the rejection.

Jared lied on his clearances, which is still a federal felony. It’s as if that was all memory holed too. He’s still a security risk. Ivanka too.

The whole family is a crime syndicate, and that the GOP tied itself to Trump and kept on defending Trump even after the warrant was executed is going to be a whole lot of schadenfreude, but I’d rather see indictments and prosecutions of same.

Oh, and the do something crowd has to find something else to do something about, because Garland did something… and did something in a big way. The case he’s making against Trump should result in indictments soon enough… (if Garland does something. /)

If Garland really does indict Trump (and presumably, co-conspirators), the mental gymnastics some elements of the GOP are going to try to pull off will be worth a perfect 10. A truly Olympics-worthy performance.

If Saudi Arabia wants the bomb why would they bother trying to get the plans from the US? M ugh easier to ask Pakistan, surely.

Russia might be interested in knowing what the US knows about Russian systems, but doesn’t really have much to learn about making bombs from the US.

Nuclear weapons are 1940s / 1950s technology. The obsession with secrecy is much more about letting the info get to non-state actors. Any country more developed/richer than Pakistan can get the bomb if it wants.

Correctamundo.

Both had initial applications for clearances rejected. Trump overrode the rejection.

Jared lied on his clearances multiple times (falsifying or concealing material facts on SF-86 are federal felonies subject to up to 5 years in prison).

How to build a bomb could be among them but not likely. Much more likely is assessments of nuclear postures of countries in the region - detailed analysis of Israeli and Iranian programs, or the Syrian program, or Egypt’s nuclear program and whether those could be weaponized. It may also include analysis of other countries around the world and their nuclear status and locations, materials, key personnel, and other information critical to weapons development and improvement.

So, basically, here’s Trump admitting that the FBI was, in fact, searching for classified documents related to nuclear weapons.

Former President Donald Trump on Friday denied a report from The Washington Post that said FBI agents were looking for classified documents related to nuclear weapons, among other items, when they searched his Mar-a-Lago home earlier this week.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump said that “Nuclear weapons is a hoax, just like Russia, Russia, Russia was a hoax,” referring to then-special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia. Trump attacked the officials involved with the search of his home, calling them “sleazy.”

I typed in “can missiles fired from Taiwan destroy the Three Gorges Dam” and the answer seems to be “probably not.” But coastal cities are vulnerable. It’s not all in the hands of mainlanders.

(In 1938 Chiang Kai Shek ordered a dike on the Yellow River opened causing the flooding of thousands of miles of farmland—ruining it—and causing perhaps half a million deaths. He did so to stop Japanese advances into central China. Ultimately, it became a major recruiting tool for the communists.)

Let’s say Trump were indicted next Friday. The GOP would see which way the wind is blowing with their voters, and proceed from there. If the base insists that it’s all just fake news and/or a Deep State hoax, then they’ll continue to defend Trump. If, however, the base says, “Holy shitballs, this asshole really is as big a POS as everyone else says!” then they’ll start vehemently denouncing Trump at every opportunity and under the bus he goes.

Maybe a tiny handful of Trump stalwarts like Greene, Boebert, Gaetz, etc., will still stand up for him.

When they let him go, it will have nothing to do with “Law and Order”. That is for the poor and dark-skinned masses.

Instead, they will quietly smile at the thought of him being safely in prison as a felon and come out as the party that is fighting to “rehabilitate” him from the “political witch hunt” that put him away.

That will keep the radical base sweet.

China’s economy is based on exports, and they also depend on huge imports of energy resources through choke points such as the Strait of Malacca, and they are the most rapidly aging country in the world. In a few years they may be able to get their energy needs resolved by Russia, but they have to get the pipelines to transport it built first. IMHO, China has a much more fragile society than we do, even with MAGA.

Not merely the political will, but active obstruction and complicity by the GOP to protect Trump at all costs.

They knew Trump engaged in criminal conduct, and the GOP put party over nation. McConnell purposefully delayed the second impeachment to deny removal from office and tried sweeping it under the rug.

They knew he extorted Ukraine and violated multiple laws. They were fine with all of it.

Because the GOP hoped to gain control and advance their agenda with Trump. Sabotaging govt is one of those goals, and Trump was spectacularly good at sabotaging functioning govt. We saw it with his handling of covid, and we’re still dealing with repercussions of that.

The identify of the child isn’t being made b/c they’re a minor. Some adult left the gun in the open. Not clear if it’s the parent or someone else. Whoever left the gun out should be prosecuted (though if it’s the mother, she was killed by same gun she owned).

Yes and no.

Tactically useful sized weapons are still far more difficult to build than a device that goes boom.

There are only two countries in the world with enough nukes to fantasise about fighting a war with them. Everyone else has enough to deter what they think is a credible threat. For small countries just being able to threaten to get one bomb on target is enough.

The Russia, the US, France and the UK can think about the “sophistication” of their bombs, everyone else just thinks about getting something more powerful than the thin man more or less on target.

Tying this to asking for video evidence of who visited and that the “mole” might be part of the Secret Service detail (who’d know exactly who visited Trump) would imply that someone the DOJ really really did not want to see them got access to those documents.

That the GQP is doubling down in defense of all this unfortunately is not surprising to me. They are fully a cult of corruption and practically none have stepped forward to decry this as the crime it is, a few (lookin’ at you Mitch!) are just remaining silent*, and the rest are hastily grasping at any excuse to blame it all on someone else, preferably connected to the Democrats.

* - Hoping to not get caught up in it, or I guess simply trying to sit on the fence about it. Pretty much people who already knew about the criming and decided that it was not politically to their advantage to do something about it.

And you have to figure that he was doing some of this *while* he was President. And his inner circle was fine with it.

Speaking of China, in watching the World War Two channel special on the Trident conference:

[Embedded content]

Video

The China area in 1900-1950 is pretty complex. China has essentially always been at least a regional power and that period was pretty much their nadir. And they were going to come back from it in some form.

By the end of WW2 the KMT had to a degree put themselves in a position where they were not going to win. Rampant corruption had been obvious to the Allies during the war. Also, noticed that the KMT (and Communists) had by 1944 sort of started prioritizing preparations for restarting the civil war as compared to fighting the Japanese.

Beyond that the European powers (France, England, Netherlands) were practically bankrupt, interested in a doomed to failure attempt to restore their colonial holdings*, and the USA was going to cut back on their commitments in any case. And despite various conservative views I doubt any US President had the political capitol to turn around in 1946-7 and push a US military intervention into China - which would have been huge.

* - In the past few years I have been reading books on the region and period. A few I’d recommend:
Richard Frank: _Tower of Skulls_ (China-Japan War 1937-1941) [first of what I expect to be 2-3 books.]
Bayley and Harper: _Forgotten Armies_ and _Forgotten Wars_ (India, Burma, Malaya, etc. from 1940-1955 (roughly). Pays a lot of attention to the colonial empires being taken by the Japanese and how the native independence movements started up from this events went from there. Includes post-WW2 period.

This will turn more of the party against him (basically all but his rabid base) and - even more importantly - could even turn the Press (except Fox) against him should they decide that throwing Orange Julius Rosenberg in prison for treason is a juicier proposition than having him around as a candidate.

Looks like he either loses the suburbs or the rurals

Speaking of China, in watching the World War Two channel special on the Trident conference:

I think you’re collapsing two things in the world into their simplest terms, and you’ve made them too simple.

1. In hindsight, there’s no telling how much Stalin would have given up to stay in power. He killed millions of his own people, and that of countries like Ukraine.
2. China, prior to the Japanese occupation and WW2, was occupied by every western power except the US, and the government being propped up by the US was corrupt and weak. Mao would have happened had their not being a world war.

Various people make a big deal out of the PRC aircraft carriers. I, OTOH, remember what a submarine commander once said about the Soviet Navy’s Kirov cruiser - “A Navy Cross waiting to happen”.

IIRC, bagging a carrier (even a small one) in WW2 pretty much guaranteed the commander of the submarine doing so a Navy Cross.

This is probably why the Dobbs decision was leaked. The Roberts’ strategy of boiling the frog slowly would’ve kept women voters asleep going into the midterms if he could’ve convinced Kavanaugh to affirm Mississippi’s 15 week ban while preserving Roe and Casey for the first 15 weeks. Then next term they could’ve whittled it down to six weeks, and after the 2024 election finished the right to abortion off entirely. But Thomas and Alito have been waiting for decades for this moment, so the leak likely came from one of their offices to freeze Kavanaugh’s vote into place and finally slay the Roe dragon they have hated for so long.

Right wing is all for jackbooted thugs running off peaceful protesters as in Lafayette Park, so Trump could have a presser and hold up a bible for a photo op.

Right wing is all for FBI and LEO cracking skulls of persons of color and anyone who isn’t a right winger.

Right wing is “back the blue” right up until the moment they seek to overthrow the government, assaulted law enforcement, and use “back the blue” as a proxy for white nationalist ambitions.

Right wing is a fascist white nationalist cult that politicized law enforcement to cover up their own crimes and to prosecute their political enemies, regardless of the facts and circumstances - the investigations and endless news cycles of launching an investigation were more than enough in prior years (see also Benghazi, Hillary’s emails, Hunter’s laptop, etc.)

Why would the IRS even have to come to your door?

They ask for things via registered mail. Perhaps a reminder about it via email. Then the letter asking you to come to their office with the appropriate documents.

Then they just freeze your bank accounts, credit cards, etc.

Now there are those that can soldier on without those things, but it’s a pretty big incentive to deal with them. And I bet there are a lot fewer hard cases that then can be dealt with in cooperation with the local law enforcement. (Or at that point bring in some federal-level help that has better specialist knowledge for dealing with potentially violent confrontations.)

What also needs to be considered is what the USA conservative interests were in China.

It surely wasn’t China for China’s sake.

My take on the priorities was:
1. Commercial trading interests in the coastal Chinese cities (large markets).
2. Christian missionaries having access to the cities and interior since there are those millions of potential converts.
3. Some view on wanting China as another anti-Soviet bulwark. (I think the focus here is still really Europe - and China is viewed as a flank that the Soviets have to keep in consideration.) The “Falling Dominos” thing I don’t think starts up until after Mao wins and the Korean War has occurred.

I don’t see how Trump can be brought to justice without it provoking a good deal of violence all over America. Everyone from Fox on down is painting a picture of a tyrannical government that needs to be countered by Second Amendment Patriots.

Even if only a tiny fraction of the heavily armed MAGAs choose violence, that could be thousands of domestic terrorists.

The FBI sought to retrieve Top Secret docs dealing with “sources and methods”—information that Donald Trump does not have the authority to declassify.

Orange Julius Rosenberg seemed to come into office assuming and expecting he could fire and rehire anyone, get them to sign NDA’s pardon anyone (which he was pretty much right about) and de/classify any document he saw fit.

It was his frustrations with the (Constitutionally established) limits on his powers and authorities that led him to rail against the Deep State.

So, the problem is not that Trump was found with classified documents, mishandled nuclear secrets, and the FBI executed a lawful search warrant, but that they took 18 months to do so?

That’s the position? That the FBI should have executed the warrant earlier?

Sure. Let’s go with that, because that would just accelerate the indictments that should be flowing from the evidence gathered - that Trump stole classified info and nuclear secrets, and the felony conduct is punishable by up to 5 years in prison per charge.

I’m okay with that analysis.

What would become of The Base they cannot survive without? Leave it as a fringe party sort of like Germany’s AfD? The German Socialists also shed their left wing, which merged with the remains of the old East German Communist Party to form Die Linken.

This has led to Weimar-like conditions in several states where the centrist parties (Christian Democrats, Socialists and Liberal Democrats) cannot form a functional majority without taking one of the fringe parties on board.

Where’s the nuclear info coming from? If unnamed sources then I think it’s a fair chance it’s coming from Trump’s inner circle. This way if there are no nuclear docs, he can say ‘What’s the big deal?’

Today’s electoral-vote.com

That is unambiguous. And while we warn, once again, that the Post’s sources could be in error, we doubt it. Newsweek is kind of a hacky publication these days. The Post is not. And if the paper screwed this up, its reputation would be damaged beyond recognition. You can bet the Post had multiple sources for this reporting. Further, the fact that they are being coy about those sources’ identities (“people familiar with the investigation”) suggests that at least one of the people talking to the paper is very high up in the hierarchy, and absolutely must remain anonymous (so, no clues, even small ones, as to their rank).

Anyway, they look at it and said they were near certain it was a basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer and easily treatable with an outpatient procedure. That was a relief. Anyway, they look at it and said they were near certain it was a basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer and easily treatable with an outpatient procedure. That was a relief. Well, I just got a call that it’s benign. It’s (or was since they removed it) a seborrheic keratosis. It’s a lesion that is very common once you hit 50 and harmless. Today is a good day.

re: #331 Barefoot Grin

I typed in “can missiles fired from Taiwan destroy the Three Gorges Dam” and the answer seems to be “probably not.”

That would, of course, be a war crime. (Luckily for Barnes Wallis an his pals this is only in the post 1945 Geneva conventions).

and the yaws

Yeah, horrible looking. But just like the black death, penicillin stops it quick.

( I remember being shocked when my doctor told me that my daughter had scarlet fever. I was reading a lot of romance novels at the time and had internalised that scarlet fever meant DEATH. “No, no, don’t worry, quick course of antibiotics and it’s all over”. And it was.)

re: #339 Eclectic Cyborg

A good friend of mine and her husband from NYC have decided to travel across the southern US by way of I-10 for their honeymoon, visiting various places along the way.

The couple in question are black. They’ve decided not to drive at night due to personal safety concerns (relating to asshole cops or others who might give them problems).

America, 2022. 🙄

They need a copy of “Negro Motorist Green Book”.

re: #425 Jay C

Good, concise analysis of how China “fell” to Mao and the CCP - lotta factors at play, but yes: a main one was that China was always considered a secondary theater by the Allies (US mainly) - the prevalent attitude being that China was big enough and resource-rich enough to be able to defend itself, and that Allied aid and efforts (US mainly) should be deployed on other fronts.
Wrong decisions (among many), but that’s History for you…..
