Washington Post: FBI Search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Related to Nuclear Weapons Documents

It’s been a crazy news day, but I was not expecting this one to drop, and it gave me chills: FBI search of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago related to nuclear documents, sources say. (Gift link; no paywall.)

Classified documents relating to nuclear weapons were among the items FBI agents sought in a search of former president Donald Trump’s Florida residence on Monday, according to people familiar with the investigation.

Experts in classified information said the unusual search underscores deep concern among government officials about the types of information they thought could be located at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club and potentially in danger of falling into to the wrong hands.

The people who described some of the material that agents were seeking spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. They did not offer additional details about what type of information the agents were seeking, including whether it involved weapons belonging to the United States or some other nation. Nor did they say if such documents were recovered as part of the search. A Trump spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Justice Department and FBI declined to comment.

Weren’t the Rosenbergs executed for similar crimes?

And before we chide ourselves for jumping to crazy conclusions, what other possible reason would there be for Trump to have documents related to nuclear weapons in the Mar a Lago stuff? One could argue that stuff that he thought was embarrassing to his presidency, or that might well get him indicted, would be stuff he’d hold on to with the grip of death, but why would he have nuclear documents, other than to sell them? I doubt they have any sense a sale went through, because if they did, they wouldn’t be pussy-footing around for months and months. Completely off topic, but listening to Emotional Rescue (the album) for the first time tonight. This is actually a pretty solid album. Not a great album, but solid. Even the title song isn’t horrible when it’s encountered as part of the album, rather than the overplayed single.

These kinds of things are what news outlets desire, and I am not sure if the WaPo vetted their sources as well as they think.

Presidents have access to nuclear information, but that is the command side of the national military structure. Things like launch codes, and the disposition of nuclear forces, etc. All those things can be changed, so I doubt that the security of the US was endangered.

The only real damage can be to Trump and his clique.

I think you’re right. This was a YUGE step to take, searching the residence of a former president. If it was just for nuclear codes that are changed regularly anyway, that would be bad, but I can’t see it triggering an operation like this.

Who knows. We have very limited info right now, and the FBI has been known to fuck up.

I disagree. Having worked with classified material my entire career, single pieces of material may not, in themselves, reveal much. However, a bunch of material, when analyzed as a whole can reveal much, much more beyond what’s in individual docs. They can also reveals sources and methods. In short, the material is classified at such a high level because dissemination can result in extremely severe harm to the US.

And it doesn’t even have to be classified. When I was in the Navy (Submarines), we had port of calls, that weren’t classified (per se) information, but not public info either, canceled because someones wives were overheard talking about when we would arrive there, how long we would be there and when we were leaving in public.

Jeez, I had to watch the video three times before I could believe it. But the rockets from the right hand launcher are going pretty much straight up!

The Russian Grad rocket launcher system was developed in the early 1960s to replace the World War 2 Katyusha rocket system. Up to, at least the early 1990’s, the rockets were unguided. And not very accurate either. They are fired in huge numbers under the maxim “Quantity has a quality of its own.”

I assume that the rocket launcher is shooting that way because they were told to shoot and there is a building or other obstacle in the way. (Ie they are hiding behind something because they think it will reduce return fire.) And if they shot low angle instead of high angle, the debris and shrapnel from the obstacle just in front of them would shower back on them.

What does this mean?

Basically those rockets are going to go up until they run out of steam and then fall back down. Add to that any winds in the thousands of feet upward and downward that they travel. (And a rocket has a larger surface area to catch winds than a cannon shell has.) All of those rockets are not likely to travel far horizontally. Excepting whatever randomness the wind adds.

If those rockets are unguided, the ones going straight up are going to travel the least from the launcher. The other ones are probably going to land not very far away. You know, where one’s own troops are most likely to be. In which case, their neighbors will not be pleased. Friendly fire isn’t.

So very true. Back when I was just a wee engineer, I was working on a highly classified job building some equipment for the government. As a test of security, an uncleared person who worked in supply chain, was asked to looked at some unclassified documents for the project, purchase orders, specs, and other mundane data. After reviewing it, this person was asked what he knew about the project from his review. To the utter shock of the people running this test, he was able to correctly state much of what this system could do and speculate on its purpose. Changes were immediately made to the entire process. The guy who was asked to do this experiment, was briefed on the program and then immediately debriefed. Why? Because now he was subject to the rules, restrictions, and penalties relating to having access to classified material which is a lifetime commitment.

When I was in the Navy (aviation intermediate maintenance for electronic countermeasures equipment), we had a test bench publication of several hundred unclassified pages, with a single introductory paragraph marked (s) Secret, rendering the entire publication Secret.

I submitted a suggestion up the chain-of-command to remove the first page in a document update to remove the secret paragraph, since it really added nothing to understanding the introduction.

My request was rejected by Naval Air Systems Command. The explanation of the rejection was that even though the information about the test bench was unclassified, it could be used to reverse-engineer the equipment tested on it, which was also secret (and even the external boxes themselves were classified confidential).

The DOJ is constrained by not releasing classified information (something which might be in those two attachments), or by releasing how they got the information needed for the search warrant.

I went riding today and they were trimming trees on the steep downhill section. The trail was blocked by a bucket truck and shredder truck. I was forced to ride through a field and as soon as I got in it I saw it was 50% covered with goathead weeds. when I got back on the trail and on the flat section I had to pull out 2 dozen goatheads and about 60 broken off thorns. After an hour of picking thorns out of my tread with about a dozen leaks I was done. The tire sealant worked well, plugging the leak in minutes. I AM IMPRESSED!

Yes, I agree that the PRC assertiveness is a formula for disaster. I understand that Japan, Korea and Australia are all very concerned.

As I understand it, there are a couple of wild cards. The first is if the GQP, in particular tfg wins in 2024. The second is whether tfg compromised US and allied security in the Pacific.

Remembering that his family, Ivanka in particular, got some sweetheart licensing agreements. I wonder what else we do not know.

I have no doubt that US Intelligence has been doing damage assessments on tfg’s activities for at least 2 years now. And probably been trying to fix things as well.

I have no insider information, but I do wonder if Putin chose when to invade Ukraine because he expected some of the intelligence information he got from tfg to become obsolete.

UC put up a video today of former Aussie PM Rudd presenting his take on the current leadership of PRC and what it means.

His belief is that the current leader of China is going to increase his activism in making China a global leader and compete with the US in that regard.

Implied is that unlike his predecessor, Xi Jinping is not going to wait until the sweet-bye-and-bye future century for Taiwan to fall under PRC control.

It’s all a formula for disaster. I don’t think the US or China can win in this confrontation. Both will try to puppet-regime any conflict instead of going head on. Japan should be worried. Korea and Vietnam too.

My assumption has been that the invasion of Iraq was militarily unnecessary and done for personal (threatened shrub’s daddy) and domestic (re-election and corruption) reasons.

A big military problem in fighting the PRC is that they have a large and capable military (near peer) and we would be fighting within sight of their homeland. (Ie force projection.)

We have the best military force projection capability in the world. But it may not be enough. And even if it proves to be, the cost is likely to be terrible. Which is what the wargames seem to indicate.

Yeah, just like everything else she has been accused of, Trump has proven to be the exact sort of traitorous asshole Hillary Clinton was accused of being. Not only were classified documents knowingly removed from the White House, but they were kept secret from the Feds until somebody dropped a dime to the press, after which only some of the documents were returned while others were retained with the only concession an additional lock on the room where they were being kept. Reports are that some or even many of those documents were classified at the highest levels that require a paper trail just to view. So even if it turns out none of them contain nuclear secrets, the fact that he stole them and kept them in his private residence would warrant multiple felony charges.

There’s no real “good” spin on all this, the man is a hazard to national security and should face prison time for his actions. The fact that there are tens of millions of our fellow Americans who are not only defending him, but actually think that he is the greatest president ever who deserves a second term, makes me very uncomfortable imagining the future of this nation.

Preacher/insurance agent faces fraud charges (WAFB-TV, Baton Rouge, February 3, 2010)

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A south Louisiana preacher was slapped with $100,000 in fines on top of a slew of criminal charges. John Vaughn, who also acted as an insurance agent, recently had his license yanked after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars.

Police describe Vaughn as a chameleon, changing his look and name repeatedly. The 37-year-old is accused of stealing a 2-year-old’s identity to defraud a life insurance company. He is accused of swiping $20,000 from an annuity he sold to a person that didn’t even exist.

It took months for Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon’s office to pin Vaughn down and issue him cease and desist orders. Donelon said Vaughn has two licenses under separate aliases.

“We have shut down his operation,” Donelon said. “It does anger you when folks take advantage of a profession and the trust that comes with it.”

He stated there are 100,000 insurance license holders in the state of Louisiana and about once a week, someone gets theirs revoked. Donelon explained the victims are often unsuspecting customers who find themselves uninsured in a time of great need.

Vaughn is also charged with bank fraud, issuing worthless checks and felony theft. Currently, he is being held in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a $25,000 bond. He was booked on similar charges in other parts of the state, including Livingston and Jefferson parishes.

The article has several photographs of him trying to mix up his look. Currently he runs under the name “Shane.” I’m sure he’s forgiven though.

Mr. Hertling’s thread also doesn’t address the Department of Energy’s classification system (Restricted Data/Formerly Restricted Data).

The President cannot declassify RD/FRD information. RD/FRD is used in combination with Confidential/Secret/Top Secret, and specifically applies to atomic weapon programme data. Their lawyers did receive security clearances to represent them in court, but were not allowed to talk to their clients about the case.

The government dropped the case against The Progressive when the information was published elsewhere. In the Wikipedia article above, how that information was published elsewhere turned out to be a strange turn of events, involving Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sen. John McCain, and even a college contest to try to design a hydrogen bomb (the winner being the first contestant to have DOE classify their design).

So, the spousal-unit, youngest boy-child, girl-child and her fiancé, the mother of the girl-child and her sister and husband, and a few other people — total 11 — are jetting of to Guyana tomorrow. Equatorial land of mostly rainforest, malaria, yellow fever, typhoid, and rabid dogs. Though I expect and hope not to be in contact with the rabid dogs.

We are taking two trips into the rainforest to go howler monkey viewing along with various waterfalls. I am not actually sure which trip is what because I am not in charge — thank Chthulu. Two of our party are Guyanese ex-pats and we are working with a cousin who still lives there, do hopefully we will leave with our identify intact.

Snark aside, I am very excited about this trip. It will be my first to an equatorial country. Unfortunately, we failed on getting a reservation at a restaurant in Georgetown that we wanted to feast at.

State dept. says travel warning to Guyana is ‘don’t go’ but we’re relatively unconcerned. Monkey pox in Guyana seems to be pretty low, but don’t eat bush meat this trip, which is causing son many sads. He wants to always sample the local and/or different foods.

Getting nuclear tech means from the US would leapfrog the Pakistanis since we’ve got far more advanced designs.

Any of our rivals or enemies would pay for the nuclear technology we have. They’d be able to leapfrog their own technology limitations. We know how this works from earlier classified leaks. Take the Toshiba Kongsberg scandal, where the Soviets were looking to improve their subs. They got access to our technologies on propeller design and milling, and were able to advance their design significantly, making their subs far quieter in the process.

Trump engaging in espionage is just the latest set of crimes, and the GOP will predictably cover for Trump, because they are compromised and complicit in still other crimes. They are inextricably tied because of their combined complicity and criminal conduct.

Wyoming Ninth District Judge Melissa Owens imposed an injunction against Wyoming’s abortion ban trigger law a few minutes before it was to go in effect.

And also I think it is absurd to think China and US have to go to war.

The core problem is that Trump was always a security risk. Always.

Had he been anyone else seeking a job requiring clearances, he would have been rejected out of hand. Jared and Ivanka were rejected for their clearances but Trump overrode the rejection.

Jared lied on his clearances, which is still a federal felony. It’s as if that was all memory holed too. He’s still a security risk. Ivanka too.

The whole family is a crime syndicate, and that the GOP tied itself to Trump and kept on defending Trump even after the warrant was executed is going to be a whole lot of schadenfreude, but I’d rather see indictments and prosecutions of same.

China’s economy is based on exports, and they also depend on huge imports of energy resources through choke points such as the Strait of Malacca, and they are the most rapidly aging country in the world. In a few years they may be able to get their energy needs resolved by Russia, but they have to get the pipelines to transport it built first. IMHO, China has a much more fragile society than we do, even with MAGA.

People calling this “unprecedented” aren’t wrong, but that would require something truly unprecedented to warrant such an action, and let’s face it: If they had evidence that he was selling American nuclear secrets (even if it was just “operational data” around our nuclear handling procedures), that would absolutely be grounds for an oh-shit, get-those-back-now search warrant. We’ll have to see what happens when the indictments come down; because you can’t tell me that there won’t be indictments after the execution of a freaking search warrant.

Tying this to asking for video evidence of who visited and that the “mole” might be part of the Secret Service detail (who’d know exactly who visited Trump) would imply that someone the DOJ really really did not want to see them got access to those documents.

But what did happen was that Mao took over China.

The China area in 1900-1950 is pretty complex. China has essentially always been at least a regional power and that period was pretty much their nadir. And they were going to come back from it in some form.

By the end of WW2 the KMT had to a degree put themselves in a position where they were not going to win. Rampant corruption had been obvious to the Allies during the war. Also, noticed that the KMT (and Communists) had by 1944 sort of started prioritizing preparations for restarting the civil war as compared to fighting the Japanese.

Beyond that the European powers (France, England, Netherlands) were practically bankrupt, interested in a doomed to failure attempt to restore their colonial holdings*, and the USA was going to cut back on their commitments in any case. And despite various conservative views I doubt any US President had the political capitol to turn around in 1946-7 and push a US military intervention into China - which would have been huge.

* - In the past few years I have been reading books on the region and period. A few I’d recommend:
Richard Frank: _Tower of Skulls_ (China-Japan War 1937-1941) [first of what I expect to be 2-3 books.]
Bayley and Harper: _Forgotten Armies_ and _Forgotten Wars_ (India, Burma, Malaya, etc. from 1940-1955 (roughly). Pays a lot of attention to the colonial empires being taken by the Japanese and how the native independence movements started up from this events went from there. Includes post-WW2 period.

They ask for things via registered mail. Perhaps a reminder about it via email. Then the letter asking you to come to their office with the appropriate documents.

Then they just freeze your bank accounts, credit cards, etc.

Now there are those that can soldier on without those things, but it’s a pretty big incentive to deal with them. And I bet there are a lot fewer hard cases that then can be dealt with in cooperation with the local law enforcement. (Or at that point bring in some federal-level help that has better specialist knowledge for dealing with potentially violent confrontations.)

What also needs to be considered is what the USA conservative interests were in China.

It surely wasn’t China for China’s sake.

My take on the priorities was:
1. Commercial trading interests in the coastal Chinese cities (large markets).
2. Christian missionaries having access to the cities and interior since there are those millions of potential converts.
3. Some view on wanting China as another anti-Soviet bulwark. (I think the focus here is still really Europe - and China is viewed as a flank that the Soviets have to keep in consideration.) The “Falling Dominos” thing I don’t think starts up until after Mao wins and the Korean War has occurred.

And if the paper screwed this up, its reputation would be damaged beyond recognition. You can bet the Post had multiple sources for this reporting. Went to my dermatologist last Friday to get a skin bump on my back looked at. I kept my eye on it for a couple of months and then last week it started to look purple on the edges. Of course my anxiety goes to 12 and I’m thinking I’m going to die. Anyway, they look at it and said they were near certain it was a basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer and easily treatable with an outpatient procedure. That was a relief. Well, I just got a call that it’s benign. It’s (or was since they removed it) a seborrheic keratosis. It’s a lesion that is very common once you hit 50 and harmless. Today is a good day.

With the understanding that it clearly implied Christianity was the official state religion, therefore the provision is meant to prevent any other religion from being established above Christianity, or preventing the free exercise thereof.

Yea - the HPD prefer accountants because accountants don’t have arrest authority and can’t infringe on their turf.

The reporter should go ask the Cincinnati FBI what they think of the HPD.

“Classified things that aren’t really classified” would probably mean an emailed story from the NYT that had leaked classified information in it but had been seen by millions of people and was classified well after the fact. That didn’t seem to matter to these security experts in 2016.

Went to my dermatologist last Friday to get a skin bump on my back looked at. I kept my eye on it for a couple of months and then last week it started to look purple on the edges. Of course my anxiety goes to 12 and I’m thinking I’m going to die. Anyway, they look at it and said they were near certain it was a basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer and easily treatable with an outpatient procedure. That was a relief. Well, I just got a call that it’s benign. It’s (or was since they removed it) a seborrheic keratosis. It’s a lesion that is very common once you hit 50 and harmless. Today is a good day.

Yeah, horrible looking. But just like the black death, penicillin stops it quick.

( I remember being shocked when my doctor told me that my daughter had scarlet fever. I was reading a lot of romance novels at the time and had internalised that scarlet fever meant DEATH. “No, no, don’t worry, quick course of antibiotics and it’s all over”. And it was.)

A good friend of mine and her husband from NYC have decided to travel across the southern US by way of I-10 for their honeymoon, visiting various places along the way.

The couple in question are black. They’ve decided not to drive at night due to personal safety concerns (relating to asshole cops or others who might give them problems).

Good, concise analysis of how China “fell” to Mao and the CCP - lotta factors at play, but yes: a main one was that China was always considered a secondary theater by the Allies (US mainly) - the prevalent attitude being that China was big enough and resource-rich enough to be able to defend itself, and that Allied aid and efforts (US mainly) should be deployed on other fronts.
Wrong decisions (among many), but that’s History for you…..
