Landers said he was at The Root that day to have breakfast, and he put the gun on the back of the sink when he went into the bathroom, but forgot to retrieve it.”

Oh, well that’s ok then.

ARRRGH. Fucking dumbass.

If your weapon is properly concealed (or holstered for that matter), there should be NO NEED to remove it from your person and potentially leave it in a bathroom.

Women in general are seen as not being in a position to make such decisions. That is now the law in several states and if the GOP has its way, it will become codified nationwide.

Thank you. All store bought. Usually a colder weather option but it was time.
I love my pasta.
It’s interesting that most is made from the same ingredients, but the shape and the cooking time (al dente for me) will change the taste and feel.
It is a food that hits on multiple levels.
I also like to add ripe (black) olive to my pasta.
With plenty of Parmesan and a sprinkle of mozzarella.
YMMV

Pane, amore e fantasia … e il Senato?

Cinema icon Gina Lollobrigida will compete for a Senate seat in Italy’s elections next month.

The 95-year-old actor is running as part of the Sovereign and Populist Italy (ISP) party. The political faction was founded in July and described by Marco Rizzo, one of the party’s leaders, as “the only alternative against the liberal, warmongering and sanitary totalitarianism.”

“I was just tired of hearing politicians arguing with each other without ever getting to the point,” Lollobrigida told Italian outlet Corriere della Sera on Sunday. “I will fight for the people to decide, from health to justice. Italy is in bad shape, I want to do something good and positive.”

Italian Premier Mario Draghi waves to lawmakers at the end of his address at the Parliament in Rome, Thursday, July 21, 2022. That’s a big and. A lot of felony convictions do not render you ineligible to hold public office. In any case, Eugene V. Debs ran for president on the Socialist Party ticket in 1920, while he was imprisoned after conviction on sedition charges. (Basically, for encouraging men to not be drafted.) I’m thinking TFG could and would run for office even if imprisoned. He’s just that kind of guy.

He couldn’t crack 47% of the vote in either run he made, and is a net -10 million votes in his two runs compared to Clinton and Biden. A Colorado judge has ordered attorney Jenna Ellis to travel to testify before the Georgia special grand jury investigating whether former President Trump attempted to overturn the 2020 election results in the state.

Judge Gregory Lammons of Colorado’s 8th Judicial District approved a request to compel Ellis to travel from her Colorado home to Georgia to testify, CNN reported on Tuesday.

Ellis was subpoenaed in July along with several other Trump allies and legal advisers, including Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman and Cleta Mitchell.

In the July subpoena, shared by Georgia Public Broadcasting, Ellis is identified as “an attorney for the Trump Campaign’s legal efforts seeking to influence the results of the November 2020 election in Georgia and elsewhere.”

Keep in mind that Trump has never been popular except with a limited subset of voters. He couldn’t crack 47% of the vote in either run he made, and is a net -10 million votes in his two runs compared to Clinton and Biden. I don’t know what universe exists in which he doesn’t lose support if he’s running from a jail cell.

It’s theoretically possible that Cheney and his daughter took the path against Trump because they mistakenly believed that Trump’s treason would lead to voters abandoning the party — that they did not in fact oppose the treason but it was a political calculation. But I don’t believe that — I think that the insurrection was a step too far for them and that they truly object to Trump’s love affair with Putin and his efforts to undermine the NATO alliance.

re: #133 Charles Johnson

The difference between Liz Cheney and Harriet Hageman is the former is not an election denier. Her views on politics might be far to the right, but she´s not objectively a dingbat.

If Hageman wins the primary, then you´ll have a crazier version of Marjorie Talyor-Green.

Cheney is a known quantity. She might be far to the right, but she does play by the rules. Should she lose the primary tonight, she isn’t going to go on a tirade about a stolen election and try to sue everyone, like we’ve seen in previous GOP primaries. She doesn’t want to undermine the principles of democracy.

Hageman would join the axis of Jordon/Gaetz/Bobert/Massie/Gozar/Green group of kooks.

This is the GOP version of voting for the lesser of two evils (or at least not voting for evil and crazy).

NBC just called it. Harriet Hageman (backed by Trump) has defeated Liz Cheney.

nbcnews.com

Of the ten House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, four retired, three lost primaries, two won primaries, and Liz Cheney becomes the last of the ten to lose.

The Democratic Primary is still too early to call.

Why Every New Trump Crime Just Makes Republicans Angrier at the FBI But the Feds have not treated him unfairly.
By Jonathan Chait
nymag.com

Should the Justice Department ultimately decline to charge Trump — which, barring anything deeply sensitive or incriminating in the documents, would seem to be the most likely outcome — conservatives will almost certainly register the FBI’s intervention as yet another case of persecution. The reality of the situation will be just the opposite: Trump openly flouting the law and getting away with it. But the alchemy of conservative paranoia will transmute it into more evidence of his innocence and yet another reason for them to rally to his side when he inevitably proceeds to his next crime.

The underlying cause of this pathological dynamic is a right-wing propaganda bubble that pumps conservatives full of rage, cordens them off from any information that would mitigate their sense of persecution, and primes them to be led by demagogues who feel free to act with impunity, knowing their base will stay loyal regardless. This dysfunction produced Trump’s rise in the first place. And now every new instance of Trump’s misconduct simply confirms to the Republican Party that he was right all along.

This Post Office story is a big win, getting rid of a huge encumbrance on the postal service that most people probably weren’t aware of. The Democrats should be trumpeting it.

If the Post Office were to be ended, the fallout would be most severe in rural parts of the country that, for the most part, vote solidly in favor of the Republican jackasses that want to end US postal service.

The Democrats don’t excel at promoting good news about their accomplishments. But then news outlets find that it’s controversy and anger that promotes revenues for their services. A friend recently said to me that after the 2020 election the non-Fox networks experienced a steep decline in viewers; that Trump antics helped them out. The old if-it-bleeds, it leads or perhaps it’s as Leslie Moonves said in February 2016: “It may not be good for America, but it’s damn good for CBS.” It’s not the upbeat Hallmark movies that become blockbusters these days; but movies with violence and the right level of tragedy.

The Quantum Bigfoot: Bringing Science and Spirituality Together. Yes, it’s actually a book:

So how does quantum physics relate to spirituality and Bigfoot? In my 45+ years of researching this phenomenon, I’ve heard several very strange reports. A few of these reports, from seemingly heartfelt people, claimed that these creatures disappeared. Is that even possible? Can the laws of quantum physics actually answer that question? Knowing what I know, I’m compelled to delve in and see. The accepted mathematics of quantum physics says that there is more going on than what we see with our three-dimensional eyes. Scientists now know, through physics, that empty space (Dark Matter, Dark Energy) is not actually empty…however, it is a dimension existing outside of the human light spectrum and the observable vibrational frequency. It seems to me that classical science has restricted itself by its own disciplines and because of those disciplines, will never grasp the big picture. If we use the classical box to try and determine all that exists, we would never begin to understand the cosmos, e.g., the world of spirituality. The math of quantum physics indicates that there are at least eleven dimensions in existence…possibly innumerable. So, could the laws of quantum physics be the answer to the Bigfoot mysteries?

On the Democratic side of the Wyoming Primary

Theresa Livingston (Democratic candidate for the Wyoming Senate in 2020) has won the primary for Governor. She will face incumbent Governor Mark Gordon.

Lynette Grey Bull (D-Arapaho Tribal Council member) defeated two other candidates for the US House at-large district, and will face off against Harriet Hageman.

State Representative Chuck Gray (wingnut radio host, Casper, District 57) won the Republican Primary for State Secretary of State. He is an election denier who believes there was fraud in the 2020 election. The Democrats did not run a candidate (on the Democratic principle of “the fewer offices we run for the more we win”), so an election-denier will become Secretary of State.

Mushroom side needs sausage…use vegan if you need to, Gimme Lean isn’t bad. Cheese side is good on its own. Overall, the whole thing looks lovely as it is. I’d have pizza tonight but we’re taking the neighbor out to dinner as her husband is away at a trade show…instead of our usual Italian place (which we love), we’re going to take her out to the Ritz Carlton (my idea…but my wife liked it as soon as I said it). Sometimes it’s good to mix up the menu…

Dinner did not suck, btw. I had the cioppino…missus had the Aussie Wagyu rib-eye and neighbor had the Wagyu burger. Heirloom tomatoes and some aguachile style ceviche to start. Waitress comped us desserts because we’re local…I tipped the crap out of her.

Via Wikipedia:

Chuck Gray has been described by the Associated Press as “one of Wyoming’s most Trump-like legislators”. Gray attended the 2021 Maricopa County presidential ballot audit, and has advocated banning ballot drop boxes and instituting mandatory hand-counted election audits. He advocates the false position that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Trump and has hosted screenings of Dinesh D’Souza’s debunked film 2000 Mules across Wyoming. He has also accused the media of refusing to cover alleged evidence of electoral fraud.

Maricopa county has 4,420,568 people, DC has 5,434,000 people, Puerto Rico has 3,252,470 people. Wyoming has 581,348 people. Why do they have 2 senators and 1 representative and PR and DC have so much more population?

227
Cheechako  Aug 16, 2022 • 9:47:54pm

My wife and I completed our civic duty today by voting in the Regular Primary as well as the Special Election for our House seat. Went very well with no lines. The Primary was just like the earlier one with upwards of 20 people running for US Senator (including Murkowski) and about 10 individuals running for Governor. Voters can only vote for one candidate in each race.

The Special Election was our first experience with the ranked ballot system and I’m not sure if I like the system yet. Need to see the results.

Keep in mind we had only 3 candidates with which to rank on our ballots. One D candidate withdrew after the earlier Primary. That left 2 R’s (Begich and Palin) and 1 D Petolia) on the ballot. My inclination is that the vote will be evenly split on the first round with each candidate getting about 1/3 the vote. No one will get the 50+% required to win on the first round. So, as I understand the system, the second round of counting drops the last place finisher and then adds the 1st and 2nd choice for each of the other 2 remaining candidates to determine the winner. If there were 4 candidates on the ballot than the counting could then drop the 2nd last place candidate and add the 3rd choice ballots to the remaining two candidates for the eventual winner.

Confusing, isn’t it?

The Republicans’ are nervous about this system and are heavily advertising to have voters not give their 2nd choice to the Democrat candidate as adding in those votes in the 2nd round might result in a Democrat win.

One last comment. There’s no way either of us would ever color in an oval for Palin! And it’s really difficult to vote for a candidate for 2nd choice when you really don’t like anyone other than your preferred candidate.

Unless you are in the camp that says it’s all pre-planned.

I’ll let the musicologists go to war over that death fight.

I’m old enough to remember Steve Allen having 4 audience members come up and pick a note on the keyboard. He’d then improvise a piece based on those notes. Many great musicians are/were masters of improvisation.

The only other choice is to change the Constitution to eliminate the constitution. Start counting small states like WY, AK, VT, or RI which would vote it down, and when you get to thirteen, you’re done.

That or people have to invest lots of money in Wyoming politics, which they also won’t do.

So Wyoming will now get a Secretary of State who can refuse to certify any Democrat elected to office, such as all the cities in the state.

But there is a big difference in population: Colorado is about 10 times as large and it can be hard to attract those accustomed to living in a larger more diverse community, with friends and perhaps family, to such a small homogeneous state where they aren’t as likely to find those of similar backgrounds or interests.

Well, I guess there’s nothing to be done then. We’ve tried nothing and we’re all out of ideas.

The other choices are outside assistance (no one wants to do that) or cede two senate seats. I guess the choice is the last one.

So we can stop talking about Wyoming since the choice is to cede it, and figure out how to flip other states. (Wait, we ceded those too.)

Those states can be flipped during the next decade.

Some states, like Wyoming, just seem to be not workable.

My strategy is leave no seat unchallenged. Every seat should be contested, even if it would be a certain loss. Wyo. is now about to get an election denier for Secretary of State because there is no Democratic candidate.

My state was the same in the last election with AG (which is why my state entered the lawsuit to abrogate the elections of other states that Texas brought).

I guess we’re going with the tried-and-true strategy of “the fewer seats we run for, the more we win.”

re: #255 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

I guess we’re going with the tried-and-true strategy of “the fewer seats we run for, the more we win.”

No.

We’re going with the fact that resources are not infinite.

No one in the national Democratic Party is keeping anyone to run as a Democrat in those offices you cite.

The reason there is no one running as a Democrat in those offices is because they don’t want to spend effort on a sure losing battle.

Sure, I wish someone will run for such offices. But I am not expecting anyone who holds the purse strings for Democratic campaign expenditures to bet money on them.

The states I listed have Democratic parties which are working with at least a little success at getting candidates that win, or if they lose then it is a close battle.

The states you list, like Wyoming, have demographic problems that hamper the Democratic party. Wyoming just does not have enough young people to force change, nor are there minority populations of sufficient number who are aggrieved enough to have a successful movement against the entrenched GOP.

The Republican party now finds itself in the same situation out here on the west coast.

America is segregating itself over a handful of characteristics.

I’m not going to try and force that to change. I don’t know how to do it in the first place.

Lol, she is arguing with the wrong person. She should be arguing with Wells Fargo.

A city councilwoman angrily confronted a man leaving what she called a “known squatter house” in her district — only to have him curse her out and blow pot smoke in her face, according to a video clip she posted online.

“This will not stand on my watch,” Councilwoman Vickie Paladino (R-Queens) fumed Monday on Twitter.

“Homeowners have rights and our neighborhoods deserve better. More action coming.”

The 1-minute, 38-second recording shows Paladino standing on the sidewalk and holding her cellphone as the unidentified man backed out of a driveway in a burgundy sedan with the windows open.

“Can I help you with something?” he asked.

“Yeah, this is a disgrace,” Paladino said, pointing at the house.

After he responded, “Yeah? Go f-k yourself,” she replied in kind, telling the man, “Go f-k yourself. How’s that?”

“OK,” he said before puffing on what appeared to be a large joint and exhaling a cloud of smoke.

After they exchanged sarcastic remarks, the man got out of the car, holding his own phone and tugging up his shorts as he approached Paladino.

“Why don’t you do me a favor and get the f-k over there? Because this is mine,” he said while gesturing at the ground.

Paladino, standing with her chin up, said, “I’m an elected official.”

I would expect this from a commercial network, after all, Sarah Palin is a bigger-than-life political figure and reality-TV celebrity while Mary Peltola is unknown outside Alaska.

Reuters reports that Latino-led organizations are in “bewilderment” after a bizarre move that now threatens the appointment of the first Latino judge to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York.

U.S. District Judge David Hurd informed President Joe Biden last November that he was taking senior status, “a type of semi-retirement for long-serving federal judges over 65 in which they agree to hear a reduced number of cases,” NBC News reports. Hurd, a Bill Clinton appointee, is 85. But just one day after the president announced in July that he was nominating Letitia James litigator Jorge Alberto Rodriguez to the seat, Hurd said he was taking back his decision to take senior status.

“According to the letter, Hurd seemed to have taken issue with Rodriguez’s nomination because he is based in Albany, not in Utica, where Hurd’s judicial chamber is located,” NBC News reports. Latino organizations are not convinced by the explanation—especially when the office of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said Rodriguez was “committed” to moving to Utica, addressing Hurd’s supposed concern.

Part of “morning routine” with Floof Cat is that she gets some Greenies after the other “chores” are completed. To wit:
1. Chow in bowl
2. Water in bowl
3. Cat door to balcony opened.
4. Morning pets (which depends on where she is/was sleeping when I get up)

The day after that varies by weather and how much companionship or human-caused stimulation she craves.

re: #365 The Pie Overlord!

Criminal defense lawyers are an interesting bunch, because they’ll take pretty much anyone who pays, and even some of those who don’t because the notoriety and press can help them gain business down the line.

With Trump, it’s not just that he’s facing one criminal indictment, but potentially a whole bunch requiring very specific kinds of needs - national security law, conspiracy, etc. Trump wants people telling him what he wants to hear, and these criminal defense lawyers are not the sort who will go along with Trump schemes.

The very worst kind of client is one who doesn’t listen to the advice proffered, and goes rogue at every opportunity. That’s Trump. He’s the very worst kind of client, and everyone in the business knows it. A handful may put up with that. Most wont.

The relationship between Sam and Frodo is that of a WWI Royal Army officer and his batman. So, yes, I can see the idea that Sam is more concerned with helping his commander/aristocrat succeed than about the ring as such. It’s also why said ring had little interest to him.

That’s why this is one of the most important scenes in the movies:

Here in PA, Mastriano attempts to counter legitimate criticism for being associated with virulent antisemites…with antisemitic tropes.

Mastriano on Saturday tried to invert the narrative, calling Shapiro “an enemy of the citizens of Pennsylvania” funded by “dark and sinister individuals” like Soros, who is frequently portrayed by conservatives as a villain for funding progressive causes and campaigns.

In doing so, Mastriano repeated a false claim about Soros working for the Nazis during World War II.

“We could talk about Soros, who as a teenager collaborated with the S.S. to turn other Jews in in Hungary,” Mastriano said, in a video posted on his campaign’s Facebook page. “They don’t want to talk about that. So who are the Nazis? It’s not us.”

It’s a holdover from W’s fuckery with NPR.

I had pretty much stopped listening to it by the time he got into power.

Seems transfolk are currently in the #1 spot.
But for anyone who thinks “well, I’ll be fine…”, hoping the alligator eats you last is a bad strategy.

they are a good target, but the main effort is directed at disenfranchising voters of color

re: #390 Michele: Out of the closet, Into the fire

Actually, iirc, Sam DID carry the ring for a bit after Frodo was bitten by Shelob. He took it from Frodo just before he was captured by the Orcs and taken to the guard tower. He just a. had no desire for it and b. never wore it long enough for it to have any effect on him.

He had it long enough that he didn’t really want to give it back, but not nearly enough to consider refusing.

BREAKING: Washington Post reveals that Trump has been scrambling to find a team of star criminal defense lawyers ever since the day that Mar-a-Lago got raided, but “everyone is saying NO” to him because he’s crazy and always stiffs his lawyers. RT IF YOU FEEL ZERO PITY FOR TRUMP!

A star criminal defense attorney demands two things:

1) Prompt payment of all retainers, fees and costs.

2) Follow instructions of counsel.

They and Trump all know the courts will be very reluctant to allow a Trump attorney to withdraw from an ongoing trial.

In the race for Pa. governor, Doug Mastriano demands debates run by the campaigns instead of media outlets
With debate negotiations already underway, the GOP candidate for governor now says the traditional format with an independent moderator would be “unfair” and a “trap.”

Doug is terrified his true intentions will be revealed.
Can’t be asked hard questions that demand answers, or truth.
I hate this piece of shit like I hate Nazis.

He IS a nazi.

re: #422 A hollow voice says: Abort SCOTUS

He had it long enough that he didn’t really want to give it back, but not nearly enough to consider refusing.

His concern for Frodo would probably be the wedge for the Ring starting to corrupt him. “You can’t give me back. Look at what I am doing to him! You don’t want him harmed any further, do you?”
