Some More News: The Perverse Incentives of the Healthcare Industry

Hi. Boy oh boy, the pursuit of profit has really screwed up healthcare in America. It screwed up a lot of other things, too, but this episode is about healthcare. This is Part 2 in our series looking at how the Profit Motive creates bizarre and often grotesque incentives that push industries to do the opposite of what they should.

A misnomer from the outset: they are not selling health care, they are selling medical products and services.

Which sell best when people are in poor health, hence there is limited incentive for the healthcare industry to actually, you know, make people HEALTHY.

exactly: my ex-GF’s cousin is a pain management doctor in Texas. In other words, a legal opioid dealer. He recently bought himself a 14K ft² house.

Now you see why socialized medicine is so evil: without it, he would have to squeeze his family into an 11K ft² hovel…

re: #421 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

they are a good target, but the main effort is directed at disenfranchising voters of color

The original hysteria was directed against CRT. As terrible as their transphobic attacks are, it’s an effort to distract from their primary target: people of color. The focus on banning books about LGBTQ allows them to escape scrutiny of their racism, which has poisoned our nation from its inception. Just like RW Christians operating segregationist academies in the late 1970’s decided to adoption a “pro-life” stand to avoid criticism for their real white supremacist agenda, these people are using anti-LGBT rhetoric (which is part of their philosophy) to mask their real racist strategy.

The original hysteria was directed against CRT.

The people behind it knew that CRT was an obscure discipline not taught in schools, but it served them as cover for undermining schools’ ability to teach about racial history in America, which is important in helping them keep the dark-skinned races away from the seats of political power.

Trump reposts an op-ed describing the likelihood of payback — such as raiding homes of Biden, Clinton, Comey etc — if he retakes the White House.

I think it’s good that they’re more openly fascist. It was stunning that during the 2020 Democratic Presidential campaign, not one of the 20+ candidates made an issue of Trump’s abuse of power in the Ukraine call. It’s going to be a lot more difficult to ignore it now.

CRT math problems (as imagined by Republicans):
1. 7 white businessmen are arrested. One is excused for being gay. 6 are found guilty of possessing Confederate flags and disrespecting the Kwanzaa holiday. Three are beheaded on the guillotine. How many does that leave for the firing squad?
2. 634 armed IRS agents set out to seize lawfully held guns from a Christian patriot. The Patriot resists. The agents fire 102,634 rounds of small arms ammunition at $.53 per round plus 86 40mm incendiary grenades ($39.50 each) into the patriot’s house, setting it on fire. The remains of one patriot, 23 AR-15s and 9 handguns are recovered from the wreckage. What is the average cost of the raid per gun illegally removed from patriot hands?

They show their ass completely when they argue a relatively insignificant gesture such as foregoing games on election day is somehow liberal politics. At worst, there should be no comment. In a sane world, it would be encouraged by everyone. But we are talking about an organization where the labor force is primarily people of color, therefore said organization suggesting people vote (or allowing the labor force time to vote) is automatically bad. I’m confident, though, that if NASCAR (save for Bubba Wallace) did something similar, the GOP would be lauding it.

“An even larger issue [in news reporting] is the instinctive reduction of public life to who’s up/who’s down politics, which most reporters (including me) find fascinating. This is as opposed to the way public decisions affect households and communities, which most people care about much more.”

“…Biden today signed a bill that appears to be the biggest forward movement on climate policy in decades; that will limit health care costs for many people; that corrects the historic mistake of not letting Medicare negotiate drug prices; that increases some corporate taxes; that by most reckoning will lower the federal deficit; that by most reckoning will create many more jobs; that was eked out through a 50-50 Senate (whose 50 included Manchin and Sinema); and so on.

You can oppose this bill, as all Republican Senators did. Or you can find it lacking, as many progressives do. But by any normal standards — as Barack Obama said in a tweet this evening — it is a BFD.

Yet one that can “hardly break through” nonstop attention to Trump. According to an article directing its attention toward Trump.”

Crush White Nationalism  Aug 17, 2022 • 12:23:39pm
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough has revealed “disturbing” conversation he had this week with conservatives willing to destroy the constitutional republic in order to shield Donald Trump from any accountability for his crimes.

The former president is getting increasingly nervous over the FBI raid at Mar-a-Lago and his angry supporters are threatening violence against law enforcement officers as the Justice Department moves closer to an indictment.

But the threats are not only coming from people on the fringe of the Republican party, Scarborough said during the Wednesday edition of “Morning Joe.”

“If people want to understand the depths to which this anti-American sentiment is running in the Republican Party, I had two conversations yesterday,” Scarborough said. “One with a family member and one with a Washington fixture, since the days of Ronald Reagan. Both were talking about how the FBI was the gestapo and they needed to be stamped out, spoke of revolution, and the Washington fixture, a guy who I always considered to be a mainstream conservative, a guy who, in the past at least, expressed concerns about some of Donald Trump’s extremities, said to me, ‘Joe, we can replace the U.S. government.”

Hooded figures resembling Klansmen can be seen in the space between the legs of a GOP elephant. The image was taken from a Mother Jones story about racism within the Republican Party.

“I would like to offer a deep and sincere apology for a picture that temporarily appeared on this page last night,” Terry posted Monday. “A Google search picture of a GOP elephant was used and later found to have hidden images that do not represent the views or beliefs of the Lawrence County Republican Party. She wanted a jury of dumbasses who are OK with sedition.

A midstate woman charged with stealing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s laptop during the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol attack was denied her request to move her trial to a Pennsylvania court.

Riley Williams, a 23-year-old from Mechanicsburg, argued the publicity about her case makes it impossible to find an unbiased jury in Washington, D.C.

She cited a study that found the majority of D.C. residents surveyed presumed guilt for those accused of participating in the Capitol attack.

Federal Judge Amy Berman Jackson wrote in her opinion that Williams didn’t prove a jury would be tainted, and said the survey missed a broad chunk of potential jurors.

So I go to check my electric (SDGE) bill online and see it is in the negative so I figure somethings up. And it is:

SDG&E customers getting credits on August, September bills

[…]

For both August and September bills, San Diego Gas & Electric residential customers are getting back $64.17 in credit ($128.34 for the two months combined).

[…]

The credits being distributed through the California Climate Credit program, a California Public Utilities Commission initiative that is working to fight climate change.

Officials described the program: “The California Climate Credit is a state program that requires power plants, natural gas providers, and other large industries that emit greenhouse gases to buy carbon pollution permits. The credits on customers’ bills represent their share of the payments from the state’s program and provide customers with an increased opportunity to invest in energy-saving products.”

[…]

Oh, the horrors of socialism, I can hardly bear it.

It’s not surprising at all that people who support fascists will do anything to take power. They don’t care about democracy — just power. I’m glad that Joe’s eyes are finally opening up to the people who he used to share a party with.

It’s wise to be wary when things look too good to be true. IMO the big earthquake in these stats, if they hold, is +7D among all women. That’s enough to cause major problems for Republican fascists.

I saw Tim Miller’s book Why We Did It on the shelf of the local library, so I checked it out and am reading it (I refuse to spend money on anyone trying to cash in on a personal history of cultivating the right wing). I’m only about half through, but he lays bare the various funnels of info, the way these hacks form temporary alliances—he had one for a time with Chuck Johnson among other very unsavory characters—how getting into the “game” leads people like him to advocate for people who actively want to legislate against his interests as a gay man. It’s revolting and compelling.

It’s clearly a game that is very easy to get into, and it can be very lucrative to swindle the most willfully gullible people in the world. That said, nobody with a conscience or ethics can possibly do this shit.

But single payer is pure communist evil.

Single payer is not interesting. It is one way of getting what is needed, universal health care.

Most countries get that with a mix of regulated insurance and social security funding.

(Also, “social security” is not necessarily government funded. For example in France the social security system is funded from wages and administered by the unions and the employers unions).

That would horrify the wingnuts even more than universal health care.

(The idea of employers’ side unions wouldn’t even register it would be so out of their worldview)
