It seems clearer and clearer that TFG shot his wad on J62021. Everything since then has been a delaying action against indictment. Now that he has been exposed by the full force of the Feds, his house of cards is collapsing.

Poor, fat, swivel-eyed loon. He’s being exposed as a long time crime family fuckwit, who had sufficiently skilled henchmen until he got elected President, when he went from Double A to the major leagues.

Fuck him. Let him die in prison.

We have bigger things to do in the next two years.

Vote. Win. Quash the R’s.

And night all, sweet scaly dreams.

re: #75 Crush White Nationalism

IMDB has been a fav of review bombs, though the review submission software does catch hot-button words.

I found that out when a review of mine was rejected. In it I had mentioned the LDS (legitimately), so I had to replace that with “religious group” IIRC in order for IMDB to accept it.

I fully expect RoP to be review bombed. It already has been.

So I see Infinity Train is trending, go to check it out, and it is just more news about the new Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) corporate tightening of the belt.

The merger was promised, but the new head (from Discovery, it does seem Discovery took over Warner more than an equal merger) promised to find $3B in savings.

WBD is removing 36 titles from HBO Max to save on residual payments.

But how much residual payment does Infinity Train really cost? I can’t imagine it is very much, in the big scheme of entertainment.

15
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Aug 19, 2022 • 12:27:15am

Corporate mergers like WBD, like holding company take-overs, exist for only one reason: to extract as much money as quickly as possible, while offering less.

The immediate needs of big financiers to get up front returns means squeezing the little folk (in this case the creatives who made some of those small-budget shows.)

I say bring back the trust-busting policies of earlier years.

The lava flow is way down.

Two nights ago the cone was breached in two parts, that eroded away in the lava. That is why there is that clump off to the right.

So the remaining two vents set about building a smaller cone.

Fascinating little interview about reprogramming the brain (CNS), using a non-invasive approach through the sensory nerves:

..

While Parkinson’s is the disease most discussed, the techniques can be applied to OCD and clinical depression.

Which got me thinking about diehard Trumpers and fanatical religious types.

Both of which I consider a type of obsession that is destructive.

Then again I am not a doctor.

But I do wonder about behavioral modification using the technique discussed.

I didn’t listen to the youtube, but my brother has Parkinson’s — he’s getting something where they stick a wire into his brain, and there’s a button he’ll wear clipped to his lapel when it needs a jolt.

Apparently this is not a new, experimental thing — the original research, and enough testing to get FDA approval, was done by the Michael J Fox Foundation.

Women have yet more to lose under conservatism than the right to access medical care, or even the right to seek loans in their own name after the Seventies.

Prior to the mid-Thirties, US law attached a woman’s citizenship to the man she was associated with: First her father, then her husband. If a woman married a foreign national, she lost her US Citizenship (which immediately stripped her right to vote).

The world’s largest moth has been spotted in Washington state, which is some 2,000 miles away from its natural habitat in the tropics.

Its wingspan measure 10 inches, the previous record holder clocked in at 9.8 inches, and was found hanging on to a garage door in Bellevue that sits on the eastern shore of Lake Washington.

Known as an atlas moth, the insect is a federally quarantined pest, which makes it illegal to purchase or sell the moths in any form, from eggs to adults, without a permit.

Critics are being somewhat hard on House of the Dragon. E.g.:

So the showrunners are promising less gratuitous sex and gore.

But isn’t that why GoT got so much attention to begin with?

I did not watch season 8 and put off watching GoT until it was nearly done. I was one of those who after watching the a portion of the first episode decided this was just another attempt by HBO at soft porn (which they’ve been into since the inception of HBO.)

Now when I did finally speed through the episodes I did somewhat enjoy the Cersi-centric story lines. Her comeuppance was a good bit of theater.

Still, not a fan of GoT, so I doubt I’ll get into HotD, but eventually I’ll get around to trying it.

But again, several early reviewers are pretty meh about it.

44
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Aug 19, 2022 • 5:52:31am

BBC does a summary of some reviews. The last review cited is cold:

The Wrap’s Thelma Adams was not won over either, writing that, for all the bloodshed, “the Targaryen clan seems surprisingly bloodless (and humorless) in a baggy script that doesn’t end each episode with the shocking cliffhangers of yore”.

She added that the plot “never takes wing”, adding: “Rhaenyra is no Daenerys. The wit that was always there to leaven even the most mordant moments? Gone. The sex? Dry. Mostly, it’s unpleasant people doing unpleasant things to each other with less tension, less at stake and no breakout dragon adventures.”

Me too, in regards to productions in the genre who take themselves too seriously.

The Witcher lost me in the first 10 minutes.

WoT was ok but man, they really tried too much on too little time, plus the pandemic messed them up.

Still, I’ll take a good high-fantasy ancient-human show over a super-hero flick any day. I’m totally turned off of MCU and DC movies.

the only thing I remember that I found kind of haunting at the time is when the protagonist rides a dragon using the dragon’s ability to teleport itself to the planet that casts off the threads that do all the damage. I’m not sure if that’s an endorsement or not.

One of the problems with fantasy shows that are set in what people think of as the Middle Ages is that the shows really are not about the Middle Ages.

I’ve come across more than one comment (usually from young people) who think GoT is how life was like back then.

Which is about as disconnected from reality as possible.

GoT, and I presume the prequel HotD, are quite unlike real life in pre-modern times.

Many people today just don’t realize that if they lived 1000 years ago they would have spent most of their day, and most of their lives, working on farms, scratching out a means to not starve.

Only a few people were great war leaders, and fewer still were the rich who led opulent lives.

If you lived back then you were a peasant, working a farm, or if you lived next to the sea perhaps you worked on a boat hauling in fish. You didn’t fight in wars, you didn’t have a glorious sword, you likely never road a horse. You didn’t leave your village save perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage.

Most of the prequel stories were not so interesting; that’s all on GRRM. The disaster that was season 8 and much of seasons 6 and 7 was due to GRRM too — his failure to finish the books meant that the showrunners were on their own and they clearly did not have the skill to complete his vision — but then neither does he.

If the diacritics in Mötley Crüe are umlauts it’s read as Moetley Cruee. They can’t be tremas as you can only have a tréma on a vowel that follows a vowel.

Ancient Europe didn’t have tomatoes, but it did have Africans.

Africa is fucking next door after all.

In the ancient world Greeks conquered Egypt and Iran and tried to conquer India.

Italians conquered big chunks of north Africa.

North Africans invaded Spain and Italy.

Later North Africans ruled Spain, and threatened France.

Europe invaded the middle east, repeatedly.

When exactly was this fantasy “white Europe”?

Biden’s done more with less, but let’s focus on Biden’s age and what that means for Democrats in 2024.

Yeah, and you wonder why Democrats are behind the 8 ball? It’s because the media frames success in ways that undermine the very successes. It’s why we have so many people who think Biden hasn’t enacted infrastructure bill, or already delivered on student loan forgiveness, or health care reform, or climate change.

It’s all about the framing.

A Rant: ‘Team Normal’ Republicans, Stop Whining That Democrats Won’t Help You

Your Trump problem is just that: Your problem.

What the “Team Normal” Republicans would like is the arrangement they had before 2015 — they would like Trump to help stir up their own voters and generate “energy,” but they don’t want to have to defend his unpopular actions and characteristics to swing voters who have a negative view of him and they also don’t want to have intraparty fights with the candidates he supports. What they’d like to do is move not against him but past him. They see that Trump is absorbed by his own hobby-horses and searches for vengeance; he does not seem especially animated by the new culture wars of the day; maybe he can just be allowed to fade away, screaming into a void, as the party nominates DeSantis.

When Democrats help prop up candidates who are committed to avenging Trump, they interfere with this project. And if they indict Trump — raising the salience of Trump’s personal grievances and putting Trump’s fixation on his own alleged persecution into more plausible alignment with the locus of Republican primary voter interest in 2024 — they will also interfere with the project.

In the view of the Republicans who cry foul at these actions, it’s the Democrats’ responsibility not to back Trump or oppose him — it’s to ignore him, as they try mightily to do the same, in hopes that it will cause him to disappear in favor of another stronger potential nominee. That is, Democrats are supposed to participate in their strategy to get DeSantis nominated in 2024 — it’s their duty, even if it entails giving Trump a pass on criminal acts, and even though it will make Democrats less likely to win the 2024 election.

Hopefully I will be getting a new phone today. I have an appointment in the KOP Apple store around noon. Unfortunately I forgot most of my travel items for my iPad and had to buy them. I managed to score a nice set of Sony headphones for $20 at Wegmans. And unlike a certain candidate I know how to say the name of the store.

But what about the presence of potatoes, pumpkins and tobacco, all of which originated in the Americas and would have been unknown to ancient Europe?

Miscegvegegination!

LOTR isn’t restricted to one time period. The Shire seems to be pre-industrial rural England of the 18th or turn of 19th century, while Rohan and Gondor are more medieval.

I think that was his point. Yes, Democrats may put up an ad arguing that the Trump candidate is extreme, but they’re doing it because Democrats think the Trump candidate will be easier to beat. But it’s not the Democrat’s job to help Republicans win.

easy to find
easy to prove

today’s electoral-vote.com

Let us now poke some giant holes in this vile political theater. First of all, DeSantis himself so thoroughly muddied the waters after ex-felons were, then weren’t, then maybe were, then maybe weren’t given the right to vote again that any “fraudulent” ballots were surely honest mistakes. Second, Florida has a population of over 21 million people. That being the case, 20 votes are not enough to affect any election, even the race for deputy assistant dogcatcher in Sticksville. Third, when four people in The Villages (a.k.a. a Republican stronghold) were caught casting actual fraudulent votes for Donald Trump, DeSantis said nary a word.

The Kentucky Supreme Court issued three separate opinions yesterday when it denied abortion clinics emergency relief to reopen, accepted transfer of the case from the Court of Appeals, and scheduled oral argument for November 15, exactly one week after voters will decide if the Kentucky Constitution does not protect abortion rights. It looks, however, like there is a majority to recognize abortion rights, IF the constitutional amendment is defeated by the voters on November 8. So we’ll see if, like in Kansas, a bunch of people who never vote turn out to protect their reproductive rights on November 8. Kentucky has possibly the strictest modern anti-abortion law on the books in the country, with abortion banned from the moment of conception unless the woman is dying. It does specify that women can’t be criminally prosecuted for getting an abortion.

They targeted people who the voters of Florida had granted the right to vote — and then the GOP took away that right and the corrupt SCOTUS said “no problem”. Its a shame it had to come to women losing their bodily autonomy to wake voters the fuck up, but in a way Kavanaugh did democracy a big favor by voting to reverse Roe and Casey. If he had sided with Roberts and kept Roe in force through the first 15 weeks of pregnancy, the American electorate would still be sleep walking towards a big GOP victory in November, setting the stage for Congress to install Trump or DeSantis as dictator in 2025. Instead, we have a fighting chance of retaining Congress, and keeping many Big Lie Trumpists out of positions where they could void Black votes to steal elections.

re: #19 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Fascinating little interview about reprogramming the brain (CNS), using a non-invasive approach through the sensory nerves:

*snip*

But I do wonder about behavioral modification using the technique discussed.

There’s been a lot of interesting research where a “combined” therapy approach is being evaluated. I’ve seen papers on using external vagus nerve stimulation (via the auricular nerve wearing something that looks like a hearing aid) timed with physical therapy activities (stroke rehab, Parkinson’s are two of the areas) or timed with an activity like word recall (Alzheimer’s). I’ve also seen recent work on using sound combined with electrical stimulation to mitigate pain (cse.umn.edu).

A lot of it may end up being a dead-end or impractical but there should be some interesting breakthroughs in the next 10 years. There are just so many unknowns, which makes it even more interesting to study. Even understanding mechanistically simple things like “why does it help relieve the pain better to rub the areas around where I hammered my thumb than to rub the area where I actually hammered my thumb?” will move therapies forward. Pain researchers are moving away from the gate theory of pain (block the nerve - block the pain) to a surround theory of pain (increasing positive/pleasurable sensation on the nerves around the pain source to, essentially, overwhelm the “ow” signal)

It’s important to note that we’re still in the early stages of understanding the impact of Dobbs on the electorate. While we get a clearer picture of how voters - women in particular - responded in the days and weeks following the leak and Supreme Court decision, we know that the impact overturning Roe will be felt in our politics for years to come.

Right now, all signs point to a fired up female electorate around the country in states where abortion rights are under immediate threat. At TargetSmart, we’ll continue to comb through the data as it’s made available and we’ll make sure to keep you informed as we do. Stay tuned and follow along @TBonier or email me directly with questions or feedback.

Well, MAL isn’t secure, despite what they claim, because anyone with a couple grand can gain access (via membership). Anyone can be invited in as a guest. Security is absolutely awful, and that’s been the case since the start. None of Trump’s golf businesses are secure for that same reason. They all allow too many people access to facilities, and there are no adequate safeguards for classified info.

He mishandled classified info. Period. That’s the crime.
He stole classified info. He was in possession of classified materials he was not entitled to possess. It was taken improperly. Then he lies to try and cover up his tracks.

Actually I’d say it’s both in this case. Highly classified information is meant to ONLY be kept in certain highly secure areas.

If someone steals it and leaves a few copies sitting out on their kitchen table for anyone to look at…that’s two fuckups.

They never had to. They just did their usual corruption and bullying and relied on their power to fix things for them. Why should they bother learning the rules when they can just do what they want? Well, until it all catches up with you and it starts to matter.

Same way with the 1/6 insurrectionists. For all they ranted about how hard done by they were, most of these assholes had just skated through their lives relying on their status and their skin color. So when they actually did something that had consequences, for the first time in their lives, they acted like deer that never had seen a hunter, sloppily leaving tracks all over and never conceiving that something bad could ever happen.

Krugman’s Column in the NYT today:

There’s something strange in the D.C. air these days. It smells a bit like … competence.

Seriously, it has been amazing to watch the media narrative on the Biden administration change. Just a few weeks ago President Biden was portrayed as hapless, on the edge of presiding over a failed presidency. Then came the Inflation Reduction Act, a big employment report and some good news on inflation, and suddenly we’re hearing a lot about his accomplishments.

But I still don’t think the media narrative gets it quite right. Biden has indeed accomplished a lot — in some ways more than he’s getting credit for, even now. On the other hand, America is a huge nation with a huge economy, and his policies don’t look as impressive when you compare them with the scale of the nation’s problems.

Furthermore, at this point Biden is arguably benefiting from the soft bigotry of low expectations. His policy achievements are big by modern standards, but they wouldn’t have seemed astounding in an earlier era — the era before the radicalization of the Republican Party made it almost impossible to pursue real solutions to real problems.

So, what has Biden accomplished?

As I see it, he came into office with three main domestic policy goals: investing in America’s fraying infrastructure, taking serious action against climate change and expanding the social safety net, especially for families with children. He got most of two and a bit of the third.
Last year’s infrastructure bill gets remarkably little media attention; only about a quarter of voters even know that it passed. But we should remember that Barack Obama wanted to invest in infrastructure but couldn’t; Donald Trump promised to do it but didn’t (and “It’s infrastructure week!” became a running joke); then Biden got it done.

By contrast, the Inflation Reduction Act, which is mainly a climate law, has received a lot of attention, and deservedly so. America is finally taking action against the biggest existential threat of our times. Energy experts believe that it will have large direct effects in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

These are significant achievements, and a big contrast with the last administration, whose only major domestic policy change was a tax cut that had almost no visible positive effects.

But when I see news reports describe these laws as “massive” or huge, I wonder whether the writers have done the math. The infrastructure law will add roughly $500 billion in spending over the next decade. The Inflation Reduction Act will increase spending by roughly an additional half trillion. A law to promote U.S. semiconductor production will add around $50 billion more. Overall, then, we’re talking about a bit more than $1 trillion in public investment over 10 years.

To put this in perspective, the Congressional Budget Office expects cumulative gross domestic product to be more than $300 trillion over the next decade. So the Biden agenda will amount to around one-third of one percent of G.D.P. Massive it isn’t.
True, some of what Biden has done may have effects much bigger than the dollar sums might suggest. There are reasons to hope that the climate law will have a sort of catalytic effect in promoting a transition to clean energy. And some economists believe that boosting the budget of the resource-starved Internal Revenue Service will greatly reduce tax evasion and hence increase revenue.

And can we say a word about foreign policy? Biden got immense flak over the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, although the critics offered few suggestions about what he should have done differently. But the narrative on foreign affairs has changed, too; I’m no expert, but it looks to me as if the Biden administration has done a remarkable job assembling and holding together a coalition to help Ukraine resist Russian aggression.

OK, I can already hear people yelling in response to any citation of Biden’s achievements, what about inflation? Indeed, the Biden administration failed to appreciate the risks of an inflation surge. However, so did many others, including the Federal Reserve (and yours truly). And it does seem worth pointing out that other countries, notably Britain, are also suffering from high inflation, even though they didn’t follow anything like Biden-style policies. In fact, Britain’s inflation problem looks worse than ours, on multiple dimensions.

And both the public and financial markets expect inflation to be brought under control. So it doesn’t look as if this admittedly big misstep will do enduring damage.

Again, I don’t want to sound Trumpian and claim that Biden is doing an awesome job, a perfect job, the best job anyone has ever seen. What he has done — and was doing even before the media narrative turned — is deal, reasonably effectively, with the real problems America is facing.

The thing is, what we’re getting from Biden should be routine in a wealthy, sophisticated nation; indeed, it was routine before the G.O.P. took its hard right turn. At this point, however, competent, reality-based government comes as a shock.

Appreciate the suggestions about places.

Mrs Cranky is thinking about a 4-8 week outing (not thrilled about that) so suggestions about places with lots to do or other interesting destinations close by are helpful.

Look closely at the Coastal Bend in Texas all the way south to Port Isabel and Brownsville. Awesome beaches and some of the friendliest Texans your going to find.

Let me know. I’ll bring the boat.

Seconded!

One thing I dislike about articles that say “If we were in normal times, we wouldn’t have to celebrate this” is that it’s a nostalgia piece, and nostalgia, to me, is just a mild form of defeatism. We should celebrate wins all the time.

Krugman’s Column in the NYT today:

As I see it, he came into office with three main domestic policy goals: investing in America’s fraying infrastructure, taking serious action against climate change and expanding the social safety net, especially for families with children. He got most of two and a bit of the third.

Have we forgotten about Covid already?

When he took office, a thousand people a day were dying, and hospitals were on the verge of collapse. Biden oversaw a rollout that got 2/3 of the country fully vaccinated, able to safely resume their lives. The 1/3 who didn’t get vaxxed, that was mostly by their own insistence, and daily deaths (mostly of the willfully unvaxxed) are less than half what they were.

Covid hasn’t forgotten about us. My friend who tested positive in early July (double vaxxed and one booster) is still dealing with exhaustion and brain fog. We spoke on the phone last week for 5 minutes, and she had to get off the phone because it was too much. I shudder to think about what would have happened without the vax or if she was anti-vax (although we most likely wouldn’t be close friends if she had that mindset).

My friend who got brain damage from covid early in the pandemic because his employer sucks seems to be back to normal now. It took over year, but he’s not thick headed and angry anymore. I hope your friend bounces back as well.

She wasn’t even particularly sick when she was positive. She said it was like a mild to moderate head cold. Covid is one fickle asshole.

Yeah, they say even “mild” covid can do that. My friend had it bad enough to be hospitalized after collapsing.

In addition, it ruined her trip to Italy that was postponed by covid in the first place. First world problems, but man what a bummer.

if the arrow points to Arizona, you have to be careful, a fair bit of the state gets an actual winter. If you stick to the southern part of the state, there’s options like Karchner Caverns, Saguaro National Park (East/West), and Madera Canyon; if you’re inclined to do the outdoor sights and sounds. Tucson is also supposedly a foodie destination, so a fair number of quality establishments to dine out at, with everything from taco trucks and sonoran hotdogs to more refined dining. Like any decent sized city, you have a number of decent attractions around the town, but of special note, there’s the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum.

Anza-Borego (California state park) is beautiful, rarely crowded, and a short distance from Palm Springs (Joshua Tree) or Mexico. (also, there’s local mountains you can do a day trip up into to get a break from the heat.

Bonus points, you won’t have to set foot in Texas or Arizona.

When I was a kid, my grandparents used to take me out there every other weekend. They had a trailer in Ocotillo Wells. I’m not a fan of “hot” but I still love going out there.

I ride my motorcycle out there usually once a year in the early spring or late fall. I haven’t done it since COVID though. I need to rectify that. It’s also where I take my telescope from time to time so I can actually see things.

If there’s one thing political commentators should have learned from the last 70 years, it’s that the incidence of corruption among the wealthy is much higher than among those who can’t afford to hide what they’re doing.

I think COVID has become the new third rail. It’s been talked to death. Either you got vaxed or you didn’t. Either you’ve had it or will have it. It’s pretty endemic at this point.

Which, I agree, is pitiful, but running on “I got 2/3 of the country fully Faxed and boosted!” isn’t something you can claim as a Victory because 1/3 of the country is made up of idiots who have deeply endangered their children to Long Covid. Our neighbors across the street have three kids between third and eighth grade and were absolutely first in line to get their kids Vaxed. Good thing, too, because the mom and the two youngest have since tested positive with very minor symptoms.
