My friend Carlos Vega played with James for many years, and played on the album version of this song. He committed suicide about two months before this concert. And I still think of him often.

Not for lack of trying.

Trump’s meddling in Iran and North Korea enabled both to advance their nuclear programs. He went out of his way to do so.

Trump had a hard on for nukes.

Appreciate the suggestions about places.

Mrs Cranky is thinking about a 4-8 week outing (not thrilled about that) so suggestions about places with lots to do or other interesting destinations close by are helpful.

Costa Rica. I have heard a lot of good about it. Both Atlantic and Pacific coasts, plus mountains in between, well established tourism, environmental parks.

Happy Friday! Enjoying my favorite hobby, ease dropping on people in a restaurant.

A while back my wife and I were at a steak house and noticed the couple across the way from us having a pretty heated argument. The woman eventually stormed out.

We thought that was the end of it…until about 15 minutes later when she returned and calmly finished her meal. They did end up leaving separately, though.

Costa Rica. I have heard a lot of good about it. Both Atlantic and Pacific coasts, plus mountains in between, well established tourism, environmental parks.

That’s a pleasant place. However, I have always wanted to go to Belize. Warm, beautiful beaches, English is the official language (British Honduras prior to independence) and plenty of sights. Lots of fascinating Mayan ruins as well. Seems like a great place to explore a tropical rain forest to me.

We may be in line to see a lot more of Middle Earth.

Embracer Group buys Middle-earth Enterprises and will explore new movies based on LOTR and Hobbit IP and characters

theonering.net

Swedish video game and media company Embracer Group today announced the purchase of Middle-earth Enterprises (MEE) from The Saul Zaentz Company, acquiring all its IP for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit in the process.

One of the most-exciting aspects of this annoucement for Tolkien fans is Embracer’s suggestion that it will explore “additional movies based on iconic characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Gollum, Galadriel, Eowyn and other characters from Tolkien’s literary works.”

Influencer Andrew Tate — who is known for making misogynistic comments online — has been banned from Facebook and Instagram.

A spokesperson for Meta told Insider that Tate was banned from Facebook and Instagram for violating policies around dangerous organizations and individuals and for violating policies on hate speech.

The spokesperson said Tate is not allowed to have a presence on either of the platforms and that the ban is permanent.

At the time of publication, Insider saw that Tate’s TikTok account was also removed. TikTok did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

During the Terri Schiavo affair, I made a cruel proposition: Give her a motorized chair and a special “sentience animal” who would think for her. Then her relatives could parade her around and disfigure her poor soul all day long.

This case would be even simpler: Release the dead fetus to adoption.

Yes, that’s cold. Yes, the soul of the fetus is even more disfigured. But do it.

Call their fucking bluff.

I’m not a fan of his either but if he can make any “conservatives” come to sanity, then it can help our side. If Trump and Trump-adjacent politicians can be weeded out, then all-out battle can resume against the noxious political brand of conservatism. For now, we may have to appeal to those (like Cheney) who don’t share our views but who hate the pro-Putin anti-democracy brigade that Trump and Faux News appeal to.

I got a spam alert last night, ostensibly from my Credit Union, telling me that a “Payee” had been added to my account and I had to take immediate action (by, of course, logging in to my account using a link in the message). The alert came from a Baltimore number.

My Credit Union is local. I live nowhere near Baltimore.

Interesting media find of the day- at least here in Scotland- and almost certainly a sample source which will reverberate through Scottish (and possibly wider) electronic music in years to come…

ScotRail, the (recently re-nationalised) main railway company of Scotland released the entirety of their electronic announcements audio in a huge audio file on their website.

Basically all the possible segments of possible announcements I’ve heard whilst taking a train in Scotland (eg station names, “We apologise for the delay, this is due to”, “a signal failure”, “a supermarket trolley on the track”, “an unexploded wartime bomb”) in a single longform audio file.

It’s already been split into individual files, and annotated.

re: #77 Crush White Nationalism

David French is trying to parse a difference between “normal” conservatives and “fascists.” Fascists ARE conservatives, and the only point of conservatism is to promote and maintain a hierarchy of rulers. That’s it. That’s all it’s ever been. Whatever system promotes a hierarchy of rulers, a conservative will use. (It’s also why they shiv each other for power so much.) If they can win democratically, then democracy it is. If they have a monarchy, they’ll rule that way. If it’s an autocrat, the Der Fuehrer it is.

The only point of conservatism is the exercise of power.

re: #96 The Pie Overlord!

Knowing what kind of people David French & Christopher Rufo are, IMHO they would both support repealing the CRA.

Christopher Rufo also is leading the attacks on school teachers and librarians with charges of “grooming” leading to violent threats against both.

If conservatives can rule through violence and intimidation, then they will do that.

Do not let people like David French claim that there is somehow a gentler, nicer conservatism, a “compassionate conservatism” if you will. Conservatism only exists to justify rule, ever since Edmond Burke defined it.

Not this time - it was because of the automatic smart quote converter. The normal apostrophes in usernames were being converted to curly single quotes, so the DB lookup failed.

Gasbuddy has it just under $4 in the Twin Cities suburbs around me. Some more outstate MN communities have gas around $3.40 I’m certain the price difference is because of some conspiracy that proves the trilateral commission is stealing the election.

Homeowner update:

Been going through old papers and getting rid of a lot of crap. Shredder getting paid overtime. Ran across some receipts from 2004 and 2007 for the solar attic fans I had installed at the time and it dawned on me. There’s no way they’re still working. Amazingly enough, someone answered the phone at the office of the company. They could send a guy out in a few days to take a look/replace if needed. I pretty much decided to replace them regardless. The newer ones are way more efficient and run 24/7. My old ones had thermometers. He didn’t even need to get into the attics. It only took him about 2.5 hours to finish.

Next project. Replace natural gas lights (on posts) with electric/LED. I was considering solar for these too but there’s plenty of tree shade and dreary winter weather here at the boudoir. And the cost alone to replace batteries every 2-3 years is over $100. Eh.

Thank you for your time. 😂

I’ve been taunting yokel Trumpsters with the (mostly cherry picked) gas price difference between Biden counties and Trumpster domains. Part of this is because low prices are found along the border while isolated back of beyond areas have the highest prices because of high transport costs and low competition. This coincides with voting patterns. Some very isolated rural counties, like Roberts in the Panhandle, are practically all white and voted Trump by massive margins (97% there and that is not the highest). They are also the farthest from the refineries.

Marin brushed off questions about whether she was in an appropriate condition, given the tensions between Helsinki and Moscow, in which to “lead the country” while she was at the party. “The State Council is always functional, and meetings are not called in the middle of the night,” she said. “If you need to reach me, I am always ready to do work.”

Marin stressed that her partying wasn’t irresponsible. “If I had any inkling that I needed to be in the State Council to make a decision, I would not have been partying, but there was no such thing,” she said.

When asked whether she had a takeaway following the outcry, Marin said: “I would say that I personally hope that in 2022 it will be acceptable for people in such a decisive position to spend the evening singing and dancing.”

“I like to think that in the future I can go to Ruisrock or Flow festival and other events, even gigs. I hope that we can be people,” she added.

And yes, Lake Mead is in trouble.

Here in San Diego County we will not have to do water rationing this year. But if this winter is very dry then next year will be quite tough.

The backend is written in a mix of Poplog and Dylan, the front end in Erlang and Brainfuck.
