Brilliant and Uplifting: Natalia Lafourcade, “Un Canto Por México” (El Musical)

Music • Views: 18,695

YouTube

I first heard Natalia’s amazing voice on a Tiny Desk Concert, and since then she has remained one of my favorite artists in any language. This, right here? Is an incredible production on every level.

And yes, that one dude is indeed playing what appears to be the jawbone of some sort of large mammal.

On Great Performances on PBS tonight (and on their website for a few weeks), Black Lucy and the Bard.

Based on some sonnets Shakespeare wrote to “a dark lady”, it’s narrated by a writer who was taken by the idea that “dark” meant African. It’s danced by the Nashville Ballet, music by Rhiannon Giddens.

re: #6 Charles Johnson

After the school desegregation battle was lost, the Citizen’s Councils of America (the White Citizens Councils) became during Ronald Reagan’s administration in 1985 the Council of Conservative Citizens (the group from which the Charleston AME Church mass-murderer got his ideas and posted to their Website).

The violence and racism of conservatism doesn’t change, just the names.

Rings of Power new episode has dropped.

I liked it, especially the sound track.

Still not convinced that this can be the show that Amazon wanted it do be. I find the first four episodes good but it lacks the cult following that I think Bezos hoped.

Instead, RoP finds itself in the middle of a battle in our never ending culture war.

I picked up this political advertisement in my mail today:

and

The two women here are the GOP candidates for the AZ legislature. (Each district has one state senator and two state representatives.) I’m unfamiliar with the group (Opportunity Arizona) sending out this mail. Interestingly enough, I also got a four page full color mailer from Seth Blattman, one of the two Democrats, both in English and Spanish, and featuring the other candidate, Lorena Austin, on the back page.

Some serious money is going into both these flyers. What I found interesting about the Opportunity Arizona mailer is they’re going *seriously hard* on the insurrection and also mentioning they want to jail women for obtaining abortions.

Usually I just throw this shiz away because why would I vote for someone in the MAGA cult, but the brash nature of this mailer, and the four page, two language nature of the state rep mailer had me hold on to them.

Surprise (not): MAGA terrorist is big Trump/Repug contributor, also antivax.

Catherine Leavy, Boston Children’s Hospital Suspect: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Federal Election Commission records show Catherine M. Leavy of Westfield has made dozens of campaign contributions to former President Trump, the Republican party and MAGA PACs since 2016. Heavy confirmed the address listed in a Trump filing for the campaign contributor matches public records for the 37-year-old Leavy.

The most recent campaign contribution was $150 to Trump on August 12, 2020. Leavy also contributed to WinRed, the Trump Make America Great Again Commmittee and the Republican National Committee. The 237 contributions total in the thousands, records show.

In October 2020, Leavy shared a MassLive article on Twitter about Democrats trying to flip a Republican state senate seat in Massachusetts and replied, “He’s a pos he blows cocaine and steals money you guys have no clue.” She also responded to a tweet in October 2020 about the Biden-Harris campaign and wrote, “You want people to vote at 14 years old seriously wow.”

Leavy also tweeted to someone who posted about getting a flu vaccine, “Did you look at the ingredients in that flu shot.”

For the first time in months I managed to sit through Bill Maher. What helped was the quality of his panel: John Meacham and Julia Ioffe. Whenever he has one of his rw pals, the conversation devolves into a full attack on the left and his efforts to promote the notion that we can all just get along. Unfortunately, the end of the program, when he was free to talk without other’s presenting an alternative, he reverted to his “anti-woke” tirade. But the part of the show with the panel was thoughtful.

So there is a rumor circulating amongst the Hollywood press and the business media that Comcast wants to buy the new Warner Bros. Discovery and merge it with NBCU.

Apparently that cannot be done until 2024 because the recent merger that created WBD has to survive long enough for some legal reasons I don’t understand.

Regardless of all of that, such a merger would put a great amount of television and cinema under one corporate owner.

It’s like we are trying really hard to reach that glibertarian dystopia where a handful of corporations own everything.

re: #32 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

Warner Bros. Discovery Has Bigger Problems Than Its DC Search

The bottom line is that cannibalistic capitalism has struck again.

The financiers extracted such a high price for the merger that the new WBD has had to cut left and right and that has upset a lot of people.

And all the cutting is still not enough.

Enter white knight (*cough*) Comcast.

Or at least that is how Comcast is going to try and portray it.

In reality Comcast’s own streaming service, Peacock, has plateaued. And it is still much smaller than the bigger streaming services.

This is the thing with Amazon deciding it wants to be the major player next to Disney+ and Netflix: other companies are going to panic.

And given Apple is another giant corporation known for its long-term strategies, if it ever gets its Apple TV streaming service to a place where people start to migrate to it from HBO Max, then WBD is simply not going to be able to compete.

WBD cannot compete against both Amazon and Apple, and Disney and Netflix.

Of course, Amazon might be in the running to buy WBD. If the world economy does not collapse then Amazon should continue to be a money machine.

36
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Sep 16, 2022 • 8:26:18pm

I rarely look at Peacock. I have in the past watched a few of their free shows, but I refuse to pay.

When I visited the website just yesterday I was greeted on the splash page with a full-page ad to sign up for only $4.99/mo.

But it just isn’t worth it to me. I see their offerings and they leave me cold. NBCU has a huge catalog but they only offer a tiny bit of it on Peacock. It doesn’t make sense to me.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Sep 16, 2022 • 8:27:52pm

And if you like B-movies then Tubi is available (granted with a few ad breaks) for free. It’s owned nearly completely by Murdoch now so I have cut way back on my use of it.

But if you are into bad movies then Tubi is the place to watch them.

I spent a lot time in Kaapa! Back when I was working for the airlines (still have the bennies!) I’d fly out there several times a year. Stayed at a big funky hostel on the beach, got to know the owner, would get upgraded away from the hippies! So many times over there, hiking, diving and just chilling. I once climbed up a tree at Ke’e during a rain storm, and promptly fell asleep amongst the branches. So damned zen.

A graphic video depicting the attack that Asryan described has been circulating on social media on Friday. Asbarez reviewed the video, but will not publish it due to its graphic nature and the fact its authenticity could not be corroborated.

Anush Apetyan, a soldier in the Armenian Army was reportedly mutilated by Azeris
The soldier was identified as Anush Apetyan, 36, a mother of three children was reportedly captured alive in Jermuk and then raped, tortured and dismembered by Azerbaijani soldiers. They put her severed fingers in her mouth and gouged out her eye.

I won’t search for the video, this Azeri discussion under it is enough. The main concern among some commenters is that it could be used against them in court, otherwise they either cheer it or excuse it because allegedly she was a sniper.

If Cannon felt afraid to hand down a ruling that angered TFG because she feared violent retaliation, then she had three options open to her from the very beginning: Transfer the “motion” over to Judge Reinhardt (other district judge), dismissed due to lack of jurisdiction/standing, or simply recused herself for conflict of interest.

She’s morally and ethically on the same level as the dozens of asshats who willingly became accomplices to the worst actions of the Trump admin on the argument that if they were fired then “someone worse” would have been appointed in their stead.

agreed…. she knows that there was a closer jurisdiction they could file in and instead went 70 miles away to file it in her district.

then, knowing that it was national security, she shouldn’t have seen herself as qualified in the least to rule on this

then making up the rules as she went along stating that because he WAS President, he deserves special consideration, even though that is not codified anywhere in the law…

I will not discount that she could have been, scared, been threatened and those are very real concerns

Trump and the dark money behind them are showing their cards that they expect to be above the law and to be given special accommodation, favor for favor, they’re attempting to turn the US legal system into some kind of organized crime syndicate (which isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds these days, especially with the rulings that we’re seeing out of Red states these days) that is beholden to them, as a favor for a lifetime on the bench…

Once we get Trump in jail and convicted, it can’t stop there… we have to uproot the entire fucking system and if that means we yank those trumpists off the supreme court and out of every appointment from his four years, so be it.

Assuming no evidence that she was in some way coerced or bribed, there’s nothing legally that barred her from ruling on the motion. But ethically she should have either punted or squashed it if she felt should could not be unbiased.

An esteemed lizard pointed out last night that Pelosi was planning to visit Armenia this weekend.

I suspect that it is an attempt to
1) throw a lifeline to the embattled president of Armenia as well as the country. He is facing enemies both foreign and domestic.

2) To defuse the Azerbaijani and Turkish scenting of ‘blood’ . And to calm things with them.

I understand where you are coming from.

tbh - I strongly suspect that the Russians are well aware of these discussions. And I suspect that the secrecy was more to reduce domestic political issues that would force or preclude the supplying of this material.

As I understand it, Ukraine has a lot on its hand right now. And likely doesn’t have the resources to effectively use or support F-16s or even Patriots.

I do believe that several patriot batteries manned by NATO troops have been deployed at important order crossings. And that this has been communicated to the Russia side. As I understand it, the Russians have not tried to hit anywhere near these areas.

By the way, Ukraine is having trouble maintaining already supplied Western equipment. The Poles and Czechs announced some time ago that they are doing higher levels of maintenance n multiple NATO equipment. (Although they didn’t say whether that was occurring inside their respective countries or in Ukraine. And Lithuania just announced that they would act as higher level maintenance of several different types of NATO equipment including M113s.

Meanwhile, the Russians are reportedly having trouble replacing the missile inventory. They are apparently currently reduced to mostly using older SAM S-300 and Ship-to-Ship missiles.

One day we’re told that the Nazis were all secretly hardcore butch homosexuals which is why the LGBT crowd are at fault for the worst atrocities of the Reich, the next day we’re told that the Nazis came to power because “traditional Germans” didn’t like seeing LGBT+ folks walking around freely in Berlin.

That bigoted nonsense aside, the rest of Kelly’s BS is just a grab bag of Nazi propaganda that has been regurgitated for decades since as excuses for Germany’s crimes. The war reparations imposed upon Germany were totally in line with peace treaties in past wars and were relatively light when all things were considered. Most of the reparations were levied due to the actions of the German Army in Northern France and the French people actually felt the amount assessed as far short of the actual damages. Germany was allowed on multiple occasions to ship goods or offer services in lieu of payments on those reparations. And both the French and British governments had largely dropped the subject by the time Hitler began his rise to power.

Hyperinflation? That was due to the Kaiser and then the Wiemar government going on a printing spree to try to address wartime debts, as the government had dropped its gold standard during the war and taken out massive loans figuring on a short war with limited economic consequences. Realistically, had Germany won WWI, odds are most of those debts would have either been written off during the peace negotiations or paid for with reparations it would have imposed upon Britain and France. Just as the same treaty would have likely included the forfeiture of lands in France under the same justification that the Ruhr Valley was ceded to France: To prevent future armed conflict by denying them access to the industrial resources needed to build weapons.

Lastly, the whole “Germany got blamed for the war”? The only place in the entirety of the Treaty of Versailles where blame for any part of the war is put on Germany is the aforementioned looting and plundering it committed in Northern France. The whole “Germany got blamed for the war” bit is Nazi propaganda, largely ginned up in the 1930s as justification for the coming war by claiming that the Germans had been victims of “victor’s justice” and so any actions they took were justified by the injuries they received. But like the myth of the “Clean Wehrmacht,” this and the other bits mentioned above became part of the overall effort to whitewash Germany’s crimes in order to speed along the process of unifying the separate occupation zones into West Germany due to the sudden start of the Cold War and the dropping of the Iron Curtain.

It doesn’t make sense to me.

exactly. i’m trying to remember what the last thing was that I watched on Peacock during one of I think Amazon’s 99c for 3 months deals. Perry Mason? Then it turned out I could watch Perry Mason with some “limited” ads through FreeVee. I keep getting Starz promos where it’s 25 bucks for 6 months, but I can’t find anything on Starz I really want to watch.

If the Kremlin doesn’t pull its head out of its ass, they’re going to live to see Russia become China’s bitch in the not-too-distant future.

When Beijing calls, Moscow will grovel. That is Russia’s future. And of course, the Russian TV pundits will eventually realize this and start grumbling about being permanently reduced to second-banana status (if not lower - maybe nothing more than comedy relief status)…but they’ve got no one to blame but themselves.

Their fever dreams of imperial revival, their delusions of grandeur, have led them to disaster.

Gonna finish off The Crown with MrsTarH, then will need to find another TV show about aristocratic Brits to watch. After Downton Abbey and The Crown, she knows what she likes. Maybe I could sneak Monty Python and the Holy Grail past her. LOL. Enjoy the weekend Lizard peoples!

agreed…. she knows that there was a closer jurisdiction they could file in and instead went 70 miles away to file it in her district.

then, knowing that it was national security, she shouldn’t have seen herself as qualified in the least to rule on this

then making up the rules as she went along stating that because he WAS President, he deserves special consideration, even though that is not codified anywhere in the law…

No-no-no. She is part of the Federalist Society effort to undermine our democracy and turn us into a white supremacist dictatorship and theocracy. She knows exactly what she’s doing and believes that there is finally sufficient infiltration of our judicial system by this vile organization to end our democracy. She is a willing participant in this plan.

Deportation is the intended result. The Martha’s Vinyard group have ICE appointments scheduled for Monday morning in places like Yakima, Washington (3000 miles away) as well as other random cities around the country. It’s a truly evil practice Republicans are doing.

President Biden should start granting amnesty to any immigrants shipped to blue states under false pretenses. That’ll put a stop to this practice.

Actually, knowingly falsifying government documents should put each of those ICE* dickheads in prison for a couple of years PER FALSIFIED DOCUMENT. And they also lose their jobs and become permanently ineligible to ever work in any government funded position (federal, state or local).
