LYRICS:
The words had all been spoken
And somehow the feeling still wasn’t right
And still we continued on through the night
Tracing our steps from the beginning
Until they vanished into the air
Trying to understand how our lives had led us there

Looking hard into your eyes
There was nobody I’d ever known
Such an empty surprise
To feel so alone

Now for me some words come easy
But I know that they don’t mean that much
Compared with the things that are said
When lovers touch
You never knew what I loved in you
I don’t know what you loved in me
Maybe the picture of somebody
You were hoping I might be

Awake again, I can’t pretend
And I know I’m alone
And close to the end
Of the feeling we’ve known

How long have I been sleeping?
How long have I been drifting alone through the night
How long have I been dreaming I could make it right
If I closed my eyes and tried with all my might
To be the one you need

Awake again, I can’t pretend
And I know I’m alone
And close to the end
Of the feeling we’ve known

How long have I been sleeping?
How long have I been drifting alone through the night
How long have I been running for that morning flight
Through the whispered promises and the changing light
Of the bed where we both lie
Late for the sky

Mmmm. Thank you, Charles, for another beautiful performance by him. This is perhaps my second favorite song of his (The Pretender being #1).

Been fixing issues with the new server all day. Today it was ImageMagick’s turn in the barrel, figuring out why the LGF Meme Machine wasn’t memeing. It works now, so here’s a tired woohoo.

There are so many nooks, crannies, and moving parts in the LGF codebase that we’ll probably have things that still need fixing after launch.

Let it be known that current “American Exceptionalism” is currently being defined by how tee-hee-hee hilariously cruel we can be by exploiting immigrants for political gain.

American exceptionalism. My ass.

Well, once I was a stone, many years ago
Into a pool was thrown, many years ago
Time went by and the pool ran dry
Excavated was I, and tempered and beat in the fiery heat
By the hand of a man, whose name was Dan, Dan the blacksmith

Once I was a sword, many years ago
And my blade was broad, many years ago
Worn with pride, into battle I’d ride at a warrior’s side
And I cut and I killed and was lost in a field
And I soon did rust, corrode to dust
Oh my

Well once I was a daisy, many years ago
In pastures green and lazy, many years ago
But I was et by a goat who fell in a moat
And forgetting to float he sunk like a lead and stayed until dead
And was relieved to find just how kind it all was

Once I was a grub, many years ago
I lived in muck and mud, many years ago
But on the very first noon I became a cocoon that resembled a prune
When the Good Lord was done in the warmth of the sun
I shed my skins, and dried my wings, and I flew away

Well, once I was a bullfrog, had to struggle for survival
And once I was a carp and lived in waters on the meadow
And once I was a mynah bird, quoting verses from the Bible
I said pretty boy, pretty boy, Saint Luke

Once I was a mule, a many years ago
But my master treat me cruel, a many years ago
By and by I was sick, couldn’t move to his kick, so he took out a stick
And hit it right ‘cross my back to an almighty crack
And to his dismay, I passed away, into the blue

I was born a human baby, many years ago
I remember I was born unto a lady, many years ago
All our hopes were piled on the back of a child
Who turned out to be wild, sent the devil a prayer
Caused the parson to swear so I took my leave
To lie and thieve, on my way to jail

Well, I’ve been a tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor
Known good times and disaster
But now I have a teacher and my teacher has a master
And the master is perfection, so he’ll help us get there faster
Don’t need no proof, ‘cause that’s the truth, and I’ll drink to that!

Here is the original with Ronnie Lane on vocals and Townshend playing some excellent acoustic guitar.

One of the cherished fantasies of MAGA males is that all these cranky feminist women are just frustrated at not being able to find a macho alpha type man to dominate them. If the women fail to respond it can only be because they have doubled down on their feminist misery, and not because the men are repulsive, moronic dirtbags.

Instant Justice going to get you
Going to knock you right on the head
You better get yourself together
Pretty soon you’re going to be dead

Laughing in the face of love?
What on earth you tryin’ to do?
It’s up to you, yeah you!

I’m off to finish a book in the peace and quiet of the bedroom, since PBS is rebroadcasting the first episode of the Ken Burns series on the Shoah. Second and third two-hour segments (it’s only six hours long) on Tuesday and Wednesday.

People I heard today were asking “How much did the Brits pay for that funeral?”

I think the answers was “not that much” given that almost all of the participants were taking the King’s Shilling.

But JFC on a trampoline, nobody does proper pomp like those Pommie Bastards. That display was just magnificent. A right and proper send off for the old girl.

Bill O’Reilly instigated the murder of George Tiller and never suffered any consequences. Same is true of Tuckums. Republican media and politicians have been attacking people of color, immigrants, those who help transgendered children and adults, medical workers trying to save lives from COVID, those promoting gun control, etc. They literally do not care how many will be harmed because of their rhetoric — the more they can inflame their base, the happier they feel.

We’ll have another state funeral to compare it to next week, when on Tuesday, September 27 (Monday our time) the state funeral for Abe Shinzo is held. The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) basically forced upon the country, which is paying for it (~$12 million). It will take place in the Budokan (an arena famed for rock concerts among other things). VP Kamala Harris will represent the USA at the funeral.

For a rather in-depth discussion in English about why the state funeral is ticking people off, here’s an article:

japantimes.co.jp

Oh, and this whole notion of following the rules (as discussed in the article) is a very big thing in Japan. The current prime minister, Kishida Fumio, steamrolled over any opposition in the beginning, but now people are asking, “but hey, this isn’t in the statutes or constitution, guys.”

To be clear, the state funeral is going to happen, but the LDP already has a huge problem with the fact that it appears to have been captured by a Korean religion (the Unification Church aka Moonies). The funeral is likely to cause the LDP’s popularity to dip further. I’ve said it before, but the actions of the assassin, who was motivated by Abe’s connection to the UC and the UC’s impact on his own family, has caused a massive reckoning regarding the presence of the UC in government in general for over half a century.

(To be clear: Jake Adelstein is kinda weird, but he’s lived in Japan 30 years, and used to be a journalist at one of the big Japanese papers, but his job made him kinda weird.)
