A Duma honcho promises there will be no total mobilization, but, of course, such promises are only good until Putin says otherwise.

It’s clear that Trump’s legal team is the best and brightest.

They don’t get that they’re the ones asserting some kind of privilege and it’s up to them to prove that they have it, not the DOJ.

They have to prove that they declassified the documents, providing a paper trail, or else they’re going to get their lawyers in serious trouble, since they earlier asserted in court docs (prior to the warrant execution) that all classified docs were turned over.

Judges don’t particularly like when lawyers brazenly lie in court filings. That’s serious misconduct.

I am here for it.

Not officially. But amateur hobbyists have been toying around with using AI and machine learning to colorize it. A few years back, one such group colorized the entire film (including the scratchy rediscovered scenes in the Kino restoration) and dubbed dialogue over it to create a colorized sound version. Then they added a terrible 21st century filmed post-ending scene.

I learned to drive in NYC. Born and raised in Brooklyn. First highway driving was trying to merge on the Belt at Knapp St - pretty easy with long acceleration lane - and getting off at Flatbush Ave - one of the nastiest cloverleaf w/almost no deceleration lane esp. as traffic is also entering highway in same lane).

Dad was a good teacher.

I doubt Trump learned to drive. I doubt Trump paid attention to driving rules or etiquette, given how he drives golf carts all over the greens and within yards of the flag.

Yeah, that’s giving Trump too much credit. His lawyers pitched the SM proposal as they figured it would satisfy the two major points he was screaming at them to meet: 1) delay things as long as possible until he announced his candidacy and 2) get back “his” property.

Just going on what we’ve seen so far and the draft proposal Dearie sent both sides before today that wants this shitshow in the next two weeks, they’re striking out on both counts. Dearie looks like he was tired of their shit from the word “Go” and wants this circus out of his courtroom with all possible haste.

I think the plan might be partial mobilization and some psychological games around the nuclear threats (again).

That’s my understanding as well.

Basically

Annex parts of Ukraine, declaring them part of Russia.
Use that to invoke the mobilization and deployment laws.
Threaten use of all weaponry to protect Russia.

I suspect that the West has already communicated to Moscow that annexation would not be recognized. Nor would Russian actions based upon it be viewed as legitimate defense of their nation.

Putin has been generally fairly cautious about starting world wars. Particularly since he is already stuck in a war that he is losing.

Well we did get some entertaining shoe pounding from one of his successors. So there is that.

My assumption was always that his successors were well aware of the price the Soviet Union paid in World War 2. Had no interest in participating in another war. And realized that it would be a generation or more to repair the damage suffered.

Moreover, it’s BESIDE THE POINT. The prosecution does not turn on whether or not the documents have been declassified. The only fact that could materially impact Trump being charged is if the documents were ruled to be personal records subject to the Presidential Records Act. It’s why his lawyers have been hammering that point so desperately in their pleadings, and avoiding the question of declassification almost entirely.

Apparently, there is an argument to be made that the handwritten notes on some documents could be subject to the PRA; but Trump is still in violation (keeping the records instead of turning them over to NARA, who would give him access to them), and is still guilty of holding on to government property, since the PRA does not grant Trump ownership of his presidential records, merely a right of access.

So they want the court to believe that these documents are either declassified or were never classified to begin with, but they want to see them with an urgency that beggars belief.

Their entire approach to this case is trying to argue that any document Trump touched automatically became his, that even if he did not officially declassify a document the act of doodling in the margin overrides the government’s classification system, and thus what is being litigated is not violations of the Espionage Act but instead an ownership dispute under the PRA which (they regularly insist) is not a criminal statute so there’s no way the Feds can charge him with a criminal act.

Dearie basically made clear today what he thinks of that argument and it’s why Donny is probably already screaming for his goons to dig up some “dirt” on the man so they can be before Cannon by week’s end to demand a new SM be appointed.

This whole Abbott and DeSantis episode is a warning of what is to come upon a potential US breakup. The common idea is that there will be lassie faire Red states and Blue states with some sort of cumbersome but workable trade and travel agreements. There will not.

Militaristic Red states, especiallyTexas, will use harassment tactics like the present human trafficking theater circus to continuously attack Blue areas and cities including sending violence-minded terrorists like Proud Boys and Oathkeepers to disrupt civil and business interests and even kill citizens and politicians in these areas. The theater and stunts must continue to distract what is going on inside these fascist regions.

It is not enough to desire secession. US fascists have always felt entitled to everything. And anything not them is open to harassment, exploitation and conquest. Any Red state resident not specifically Mayflower white, male and Evangelical Christian is going to be very sad at what transpires inside Red states very quickly. And Blue states hoping to be left alone by current Conservative stunts, threats and violence are also going to quickly realize their error.

of course this isnt happening in our lifetimes.

still - one of the first things that would end would be the right to ‘interstate’ travel.

they would no longer be states of the same ‘federation’.
so no one’s packing a plane with undesirable and pointing it toward a blue city airport.

it wouldnt be a state border any more. it would become a frontier.

4 Library Collections Filled With Culinary Treasures
They’re saving food history for the future.
atlasobscura.com

1) University of California, Davis, Wine Library
The world’s largest collection of books and ephemera about wine isn’t in France, Italy, or even Napa. Instead, it’s at the University of California, Davis, where since the 19th century librarians have gathered 35,000 books in 50 languages, all about grapes and how to press, process, and ferment them.

2) University of Texas at San Antonio Mexican Cookbook Collection
Dozens of the library’s cookbooks are completely digitized and available online. Plus, during the pandemic, the library compiled a selection of recipes from the collection into three downloadable cookbooks.

3) New York Public Library Jewish Cookbook Collection
The New York Public Library’s Dorot Jewish Division is home to what is likely the world’s largest archive of Jewish cookbooks, at an estimated 2,500.

4) Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive
More than 20 years ago, Longone and her husband began donating their prodigious collection to the University of Michigan. Today, the archive consists of nearly 25,000 books and other food-related items, a testament to Longone’s dedication to seeking out, sharing, and preserving culinary history.

Scientists have calculated how many ants are on Earth. The number is so big it’s ‘unimaginable.’
A new estimate for the sheer number of ants on Earth comes to an “unimaginable” sum, one researcher said
washingtonpost.com

It’s the ants’ world, and we’re just visiting.
A new estimate for the total number of ants burrowing and buzzing on Earth comes to a whopping total of nearly 20 quadrillion individuals.
That staggering sum — 20,000,000,000,000,000, or 20,000 trillion — reveals ants’ astonishing ubiquity even as scientists grow concerned a possible mass die off of insects could upend ecosystems.
In a paper released Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a group of scientists from the University of Hong Kong analyzed 489 studies and concluded that the total mass of ants on Earth weighs in at about 12 megatons of dry carbon, a standard way of measuring animals’ biomass.
Put another way: If all the ants were plucked from the ground and put on a scale, they would outweigh all the wild birds and mammals put together.

Trump picked him because he was banking on lingering resentment re: Carter Page, but it looks like that has backfired on him badly. Dearie is apparently well-regarded by fellow judges and lawyers as a man with solid reasoning and integrity.

Dearie most likely has a long memory about how he was misled signing those Carter Page warrants, two of which were later found to be invalid.

Rule: Do NOT make a judge look bad and then expect him to have your back in the future.
