This shit is why I have no patience for both-sides motherfuckers. There is no “both sides” when one side is a fascist death cult and the other side isn’t.

Picking up from downstairs RE: Why is ESPN ignoring the Brett Favre thing when they gave wall-to-wall coverage to the Michael Vick dogfighting scandal?

Well, as with most things in America, there may be a racial component.

At the same time, Michael Vick was an active player in (arguably) the prime of his career when he was arrested (he’d had two of his best seasons, including an appearance in the NFC championship game, in the years prior to the scandal) and was considered one of the more noteworthy players in the league at the time.

Favre on the other hand has been retired for over a decade and has barely been involved with the NFL at all (aside from a few promotional appearances as far as I know) since stepping off the field.

I think in most cases a major scandal involving a current player will draw more interest than one involving a retired player (there are exceptions of course, I’m sure the media would be wall-to-wall coverage if Michael Jordan was arrested for child sex crimes next week).

But despite all this, I’m still of the opinion the racial component is the most likely explanation.

Team Trump is basically wanting the courts to agree that the documents being classified or not is irrelevant, that this is a “document storage/overdue library book” scenario where the FBI overreached by executing a search warrant instead of allowing Donny to keep stringing them along until they either gave up in frustration or started offering him more than others were offering to get the papers back.

Failing that, they want to drag out the litigation of the classified nature of the documents to a future criminal trial where they’ll stand in front of a jury and argue in a totally unashamed fashion that it’s the government’s job to prove Donny didn’t declassify those clearly marked documents rather than his to prove he declassified them in keeping with federal guidelines.

tl;dr: They’re acting like a bunch of ambulance chasers who are trying to argue that their client is the victim and that the system is at fault.

hi

We’ve had no access to Internet service so I thought I would check in and let everyone know we are still alive (for now). I’ll also create a page for the right-hand column of stuff I took photos of, though I am a crap photographer so don’t judge.

The Nebraska Sandhills Tropical Update on Hurricane Fiona, on location along the path in St. Anthony, Newfoundland.

According to both Environment Canada and the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Fiona is located approximately over the Turks and Caicos Islands. Fiona is over very warm waters and is expected to rapidly intensify to a major hurricane as it accellerates toward Newfoundland.

Environment Canada Hurricane Tracking Map

If the storm follows the track precisely, we will be on the strong side of the storm (circular wind speed plus forward motion). Moreover, wind will drive storm surge into the harbour. (Checks location: I am two metres above sea level three hundred metres from the harbour. Crap.)

This could also put a crimp in the ferry service to Labrador; we’ll have to see. I just called the ferry service and they said they’re keeping an eye on the weather.

In the meantime, tomorrow we are taking an outing to L’Anse au Meadows, the site of a Viking village and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Aha!

Now it makes sense. Thanks for clarifying that.

Yes, it’s a mess. There are a lot of issues all intertwined. Including folks willing to lie cheat and steal.

Added to that is the fact that we have not had to deal with this since Jim Crow days. And it will take quite a while to work out what should be done, who will do it, how to do it, get peoples’ buy in, and then test it out.

Right now, Congress is trying to address this with legislation. Then the Judiciary needs to buy off on it. The question is do we have the time to work it all out.

eta: From the book:

A panda walks into a café. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air.

“Why?” asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

“I’m a panda,” he says at the door. “Look it up.”

The waiter turns to the relevant entry in the manual and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

“Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots & leaves.”

Yup, the regime is not too concerned about killing a bunch of folks. Particularly if they are ethnic Kurds from the sticks.

The IRGC has an armed civilian militia, the Basij, of 0.5 million or more. These are the guys who murdered Neda Agha-Soltan in 2009. There is also Haydaryan which is sort of the Secret Service is the Mullahs.

It’s just that we Americans tend to lose interest after about a week. If something is not resolved by then we move on to something new to tickle our fancy.

So I suspect that many Americans don’t really think about Ukraine now, like they did back in Spring.

I bring this up because we see Americans now complaining about money going to Ukraine. True, the whiners are mostly Trumpers and glibertarians, but if we (the US) have to spend billions of dollars every year to protect Ukraine it will become an American political issue.

Putin always will try to bully and double down, which works until it doesn’t. And any admission that things are not going well or Russia will not win is likely to put him in grave danger domestically, so that’s not happening. The war will continue until Putin is gone.

Tacit, sure, but that’s not how it’s being sold. Russia is fighting the entire West doncha know, and they’ve got 1000 km of front to defend, so they need more soldiers. Of course, they’ve killed 10 Ukrainians for every Russian soldier but Russia still seems to be running out of them and the glorious victories are getting closer and closer to their own border.

Meanwhile, the whole thing started because the West was being mean to Russia and Russia had to liberate the Eastern part of Ukraine by annihilating the Ukrainian state and installing a Russian occupation and laying waste to their cities until the West backs down and lets Russia have it which is totally not terrorism because reasons.

Trickle Down might have worked in a completely closed economy in which capital had to be re-invested in the US, and workers hired domestically.

But in a global economy, capital seeks the path of highest return, and if that draws investment and employment abroad, then the American workers see no benefits from it.

The Ken Burns Documentary is quite something. We are truly a shitty people…… I said to my wife, this is what lies under the thin thin veneers of History we were taught.

I’ve been sort of amused by the comments on this documentary. I took back-to-back history classes in college on “US and the Holocaust” and “The Holocaust”. The latter included having a concentration camp survivor addressing the class.* And my paper submitted for the one class was about “Canada and the Holocaust” which covered how Canadian immigration acted in the same period. In short, about as badly, but not with the same level of petty vindictiveness like the various US State Department officials acted.

* - This was 1985 or so. More survivors around. And since this was Pittsburgh I would say not as hard to find either.

re: #207 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

It’s just that we Americans tend to lose interest after about a week. If something is not resolved by then we move on to something new to tickle our fancy.

So I suspect that many Americans don’t really think about Ukraine now, like they did back in Spring.

I bring this up because we see Americans now complaining about money going to Ukraine. True, the whiners are mostly Trumpers and glibertarians, but if we (the US) have to spend billions of dollars every year to protect Ukraine it will become an American political issue.

Even though it’s billions that will need to be spent now or later.

Putin’s expansionist plans are not going away. We, and Europe, spend the money stopping him now while he’s on the backfoot with Ukraine, or spend it later when Russia has decided the time is right to gobble up the Baltic states. And the latter time will be more expensive than doing it now.

US isolationist sentiment has always been myopic and short-sighted. They believe the US is self-sufficient (more so than many places, but not as much as they think) and that the US can erect walls and be a perfectly viable hermit state. Which fails domestically since a lot of the US economy runs on trade and enough people know that to understand that you need stability outside the US for that trade network to work smoothly.

Plus there is the feature that the isolationist faction and racist/nationalist faction is pretty congruent. Which leads the isolationists to readily use (and believe) anti-immigration rhetoric. And this rhetoric is unchanging, they simply switch the labels to whatever immigrant group(s) are deemed unworthy or coming to our shores. (It’s moved from Irish to Italians to East Europeans, to Latinos. Asians, blacks*, and Jews have always been on the list.

* - Except as slaves. But we can’t teach that now since it hurts white people’s fragile feelings.

From a new book

McConnell knew many of his rank-and-file were torn over how to handle the situation — and that in their uncertainty, they would look to him for guidance. If he declared the trial to be constitutional, breaking with Trump in the process, he could set the stage for a party mutiny, helping the GOP turn the page on Trump for good. It was an appealing prospect: conviction could enable the Senate to bar Trump from holding office again — and McConnell didn’t ever want Trump in office again.”

“But in all his years as GOP leader, McConnell had never led such a rebellion. And that day, he wasn’t sure he was up to the task.”

They offered me a teaching position. In Pyongyang. Naturally, I told I’d have to consider it and talk it over with my wife. They were quite generous, I have to say; They even offered to have my ex come with me and we’d get an apartment right downtown.

I told my ex and she replied, “WE ARE NOT GOING TO PYONGYANG AND IF YOU SAY YES, I WILL KILL YOU IN YOUR SLEEP” so that ended what could’ve been a most interesting foray in the world of teaching, LOL.

History last night as Aaron Judge tied Babe Ruth with his 60th homer. There’s 15 games left in the season, so it’s not improbable for him to shatter the Yankee and AL record currently held by Roger Maris at 61. He’s on pace to hit 66.

The ML record is held by Barry Bonds at 73.

“None is too many.” Attributed to Canadian official when asked how many Jews fleeing the Nazis Canada could take in.

re: #306 Eclectic Cyborg

Bonds had a HoF case even before his body and his melon began to unnaturally swell. Like McGwire and Sosa, Bonds’ 73 HR season was a joke and a testament to the Steroid Era.

At the same time, Bonds’ plate discipline was incredible. In 2004 - three years after the 73 homers - he walked a record 232 times and got on base nearly 61 percent of the time. In an entire game, he might see 1 or 2 good pitches to hit.

Was he on stuff? No doubt. Did MLB ever formally suspend him? No.

As for Judge, he is having one of the greatest seasons ever for a right-handed batter. The 60 homers sets the AL record for right-side hitters. And the fact that he is 23 homers ahead of his nearest AL rival is a Ruth-ian achievement. Hell, he might even win the Triple Crown.

And he’s a free agent at the end of the season. Pay him. Pay dat man his money!

The streaming and gaming platform Twitch has been going through some things this week. Over the weekend, it came out that a prominent streamer who made money by streaming himself playing on gambling websites stole something around $300K from his viewers by begging them for loans to cover his gambling debts, leading to two of Twitch’s biggest streamers teaming up to pay back the money he stole. I was surprised that this activity was allowed, but Twitch promptly followed up by announcing that they were updating their policies to ban the practice. Unfortunately, that’s the good news. The bad news is that early this morning, Twitch announced a reorganization of their payment policies to streamers to eliminate the special “premium contracts” they awarded to some of their largest content creators. If that sounds like a good thing to you, it is, but it’s also exactly the opposite of what everybody on the platform wanted; Twitch already doesn’t pay as well as other content platforms, and rather than bumping everybody up to the level of the premium contracts, they decided to take the premium contracts away altogether. This may result in a bit of a mass exodus in the gaming community, as content creators look to make better money on other streaming platforms.

YouTube Gaming is being kicked around by some people, though I’ve heard it’s not exactly the greatest terms of service, either.

I know of multiple streamers who left YouTube for Twitch a while back. A number of complaints involved regarding monetization, needing a lot of followers in order to get something close to fair treatment from YouTube, etc. etc. And there also seems to be a lot more trolling in YouTube as compared to Twitch.

(Someone I know who does videos of some niche wargames had a systematic DMCA attack made on his videos. Many were taken down by default and he had a lot of hoops to jump through to get them restored. And he stated that the downtime was essentially most of the period during which he would get compensation for the content.)

I doubt it will be a better solution for them than Twitch.

Okay, I went down the rabbit hole on the Nyquil chicken thing so you don’t have to:

(Reuters) - Cooking chicken in cough medicine NyQuil is not only silly and unappetizing but can also be very unsafe, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said, following the “sleepy chicken” TikTok challenge.

A number of videos challenged people to cook chicken in NyQuil, which contains acetaminophen, dextromethorphan and doxylamine, or another similar over-the-counter cough and cold medication, according to the FDA.

Boiling medicine can make it much more concentrated and change its properties in other ways, the FDA said in a notice dated Sept. 15.

“Even if you don’t eat the chicken, inhaling the medication’s vapors while cooking could cause high levels of the drugs to enter your body. It could also hurt your lungs.”

This is not the first time the FDA has warned against social media challenges that use non-prescription medicine.

In September 2020, a similar warning was issued by the FDA after reports of teenagers getting admitted to emergency rooms or dying after participating in the “Benadryl Challenge” on the short-video app.

There are far too many morons in society these days.

Yes, it’s a widespread problem. Valuations are frequently subjective, but if you’re using a value you have to use it consistently across all your reporting on that property - tax valuation and solicitations to investors. You can’t use two wildly different numbers.

Had Trump said the valuation was $750k for his penthouse and reported same to tax authorities, no crime.

That he inflated the cost to investors, but used $750k to tax department, it was evidence of criminal conduct. That he did it across all his different businesses and properties, shows intent to defraud.

re: #467 Dangerman

i’d be surprised that mazars didnt follow all the rules on the compiled financials.
i’m sure the have the documentation to prove it
they likely did not know a lot of this. more than just plausible deniability.

however they clearly knew who they were in bed with.
I would be more surprised that they didnt have lots of discussions over the years about their exposure and how to best protect themselves if/when.

hint: when the need for the first discussion comes up, that’s when it’s time to walk away

i still dont get how the banks relied on representations and compilations, not audits.
and how did they not do their own appraisals?

What is the worth of a statement that merely reports fantasy numbers provided by your client, with no verification as to the validity of any of the contents? Did their statements clearly assert that nothing has been verified and that their work is essentially worthless?

But the GOP will go out of their way to nominate and reelect Trump, who can’t run a charity or a business in NY, is under multiple criminal investigations, and the GOP would interfere in those prosecutions to cover up Trump crime.

I expect that they’ll be setting up their fraudulent businesses in Florida now.

If the procedures for producing those statements include a corresponding signed release stating that the client has represented the information truly and accurately, then I wouldn’t call them worthless. That’s the sort of thing a company does when they offer a service which could have legal liability if they do try to verify the information being provided to them.

That the client has “represented the information truly and accurately” or that the client has “confirmed that this is a true and accurate representation of what the client has said to us”?

and how does a righteous man, a President of the united states deal with this?

The former. Basically, if Mazars told Trump, “We’ll compile your information for you, but you have to sign a piece of paper that says you’re telling us the truth and we disclaim any responsibility if you’re not,” then they’re off the hook, until and unless it’s demonstrated that someone knew something internally and failed to say something.

essentially yes. a compilation is one of the lowest levels of service.
it consists essentially of presenting information obtained from a client in an acceptable financial statement format.

- the information in compiled financial statements are the responsibility of management

- the accounting firm does not audit or review, check for accuracy or completeness

- they do not express any opinion or conclusion, or provide any assurance

re: #442 Hecuba’s daughter

Isn’t this a widespread problem in real estate? Am I being unfair to say that Leona Helmsley was the norm not the exception? Another example of how the wealthy and connected can commit crimes for decades with impunity. The system is gamed to protect them.

Quite true, fiddling of valuations for various purposes is pretty much SOP in the RE business (and not just the “whales” like Trump), but the hard realities of the markets *usually* act as a deterrent for the worst excesses: and players who fuck up badly enough (I.e. lose too much money for their investors/financiers) typically find themselves contemplating a career change -sometimes from behind bars - in short order.

The main “exception”, though is Donald Trump: his businesses have been known to stink of crooked practices for years: and the “value” of Trump assets has been accepted as an agreed fiction for just as long. AFAICT, it’s only The Orange Anus’s “celebrity” status, BS as it is, that’s kept his gimcrack empire together even this far. IMO, if Trump hadn’t been elected President in 2016, some investigation like AG James’ would probably have happened anyway.

It’s never RICO. That law was exceptionally engineered, in that it is remarkably difficult to make a case for it EXCEPT in the specific instances for which it was originally designed - mobsters doing mob things.

russia is a nation that never went through a Reformation, and that has a state-sponsored religion that only exists by being a propaganda arm for the state. They’ve also killed off their intellectual class through various purges over the past 100 years. They’re basically fucked. Imagine living in Columbia, SC and realizing that that’s it for you. No Charleston. No Charlotte up the road. It’s just you, half-a-million rednecks, a petting zoo and a Red Lobster. No, I am not exaggerating.

Horse Feathers still there?
