CL’d from downstairs:

We’ve had very heavy rainfall today. The ground is super saturated. About an hour ago there was a mud landslide downtown where a couple of trees tipped over and knocked two houses off their foundations. One was a six unit apartment building. Fortunately no one was hurt. About 8 people lost their housing. All over but for the cleanup.

Just like the super cyclone in the Pacific, hurricanes in the Canadian Provinces and in the Atlantic, Alaska is having unusual weather. The event we’re having right now is called the Pineapple Express where super moist water vapor is driven to Alaska. When it gets here the moisture runs into cooler water and the coastal mountains where it’s dumped as heavy rain.

Try and convince me that climate change is a myth.

Tonight’s Ian update has the projected track hitting Tampa Bay. Perhaps as a major hurricane, but it will be weakening upon landfall.

GFS currently has Ian actually lingering in the Bay for about a day.

GFS accumulated precip through 12Z 30Sep:

But Ian will not be out of Florida by that time, not till the next day, but GFS current run doesn’t go past that time.

The European model has Ian making landfall a bit south of Tampa Bay, but moving through the state a bit quicker, turning more east at Tampa. However, it then stalls over the space coast before heading northward towards Jacksonville.

Euro model accumulate precip through 12Z 30Sep:

That’s a whole lotta rain.

If the Euro track comes true, it means Ian will hit Tampa then Orlando then Jacksonville, three of 4 of Florida’s major population centers.

It should be noted that the hurricane-specific model, HWRF, has Ian still heading farther north and making landfall in the Big Bend nature preserve area.

Scientist from UM and NOAA notices how quickly Ian is becoming more symmetrical:

Grammar pedantry: while “symmetrize” is a verb, it is a transitive verb. As in “A symmetrizes B”. As Ian is becoming more symmetrical, that is how to describe it - using the verb “become”. As in “becoming symmetrical quickly” instead of “symmetrizing quickly.”

Americans did the same to avoid Vietnam. Another war of choice, that ended the career of a US President but Putin does not have the option of just announcing that he’s retiring and leaving the outcome to his successor. Of course, Johnson tried to end the war but Nixon interfered with the peace talks, leading to more deaths of Americans, and Vietnamese, and Cambodians, and Laotians, but winning Nixon the Presidency.

Every source I see assumes that it was sabotage.

Some Russian cutouts on Social Media are arguing it was a German or US false flag.

As I understand it:

- Europe has pretty much filled their natural gas storage facilities
- Russian natural gas revenues have been declining recently as Europe moves to other sources
- Putin’s mobilization strategy is intended to keep Russia in Ukraine through the winter in the hope that Europe will give up. This strategy may include other activities, political, economic or kinetic designed to increase motivation for Europe to give up.

NordStream 2

was completed in September 2021, but has not yet entered service.

en.wikipedia.org

and

As of Sept 5th NordStream 1 was shut down by Russia:

How has Russia cut supplies?

In May, Gazprom closed a key pipeline which runs through Belarus and Poland and delivers gas to Germany and other European nations.

Then in June, it cut gas deliveries through Nord Stream 1 by 75% - from 170m cubic metres of gas a day to roughly 40m cubic metres.

Then, in July, it shut down Nord Stream 1 for 10 days, citing the need for maintenance.

Shortly after reopening, Gazprom halved the amount supplied to 20m cubic metres because of what it called faulty equipment.

Now it has completely halted all gas supplies to Europe through the pipeline.

Russia stopped the flow of natural gas on 31 August 2022 for alleged maintenance for 3 days, but later said they could not provide a timeframe for restarting gas flow.

Along these lines (of grammar police), yesterday a thoughtful critique of Rings of Power was published on one of the leading Tolkien fandom websites:

From The Rings of Power to Poughkeepsie

One of the legitimate criticisms of RoP is that some of the language used does not fit the style of the show, or at least what is nominally the goal of the show. Simply put, some of the dialogue is not using fantasy-appropriate speech.

The essay has found some fans, and I respond to one using a recent video that discusses grammar obsession:

New Euro model run, now shows Ian on a path hitting Tampa Bay directly and lingering there for at least 6 hours before moving inland to linger over central Florida for at least a day before heading up to Jacksonville and finally zipping off to Atlanta.

Rainfall totals now look more like the GFS model too:

They’d be operating far from home, to say the least. Also, if sabotage, this was a maritime operation, which isn’t exactly the easiest type of operation to pull off; It would have to be done by specialized divers and/or with a submarine. The last time I checked, Ukraine doesn’t have any active-duty subs in their Navy.

The prime suspects I’m seeing on internet speculations (if indeed this was sabotage) are:

- Russia

- Ukraine

- The United States

Russia’s aim is to blackmail Europe into buying gas again and into putting NS2 into operation, so prima facie we can exclude it.

I don’t know what kind of explosives it would take to damage the pipeline. I don’t think a sub would be needed or at all advisable. A kind of an underwater drone perhaps?

So do we really think Liz Truss destroyed the UK economy?

I read a study a few years ago about something they were calling “The Glass Cliff” about companies going to shit right after they promoted a woman to CEO, and… it turns out, these were usually companies that the Board already knew the company was about to go to shit, for reasons it was too late to avoid, so they put a woman at the top to have her there to take the blame. And avoid tarnishing some man’s record.

The bad choices Liz seems to have made, the dumbfuck policies instituted, are basically what the Tories have wanted to do for awhile, right? And if they’d given the job to that guy instead, they still would have passed the exact same policies. (and hey, look, they’ve got a black Finance Minister to share the blame)

This is in regard to the Nord Stream gas leaks. It’s from Swedish TV (SVT):

(via Google Translate)

The gas leaks on Nord Stream 1 and 2 are being investigated by the German state as deliberate attacks. Now SVT can reveal that measuring stations in both Sweden and Denmark registered strong underwater explosions in the same area as the gas leaks on Monday.
- There is no doubt that these are blasts or explosions, says Björn Lund, lecturer in seismology at the Swedish National Seismic Network, SNSN.

The triple leaks on Nord Stream 1 and 2 on Monday are being investigated as probable sabotage.

Now SVT can reveal that the Swedish National Seismic Network detected two clear explosions in the area on Monday. One of the explosions had a magnitude of 2.3, and was registered at as many as 30 measuring stations in southern Sweden.

“You can clearly see how the waves bounce from the bottom to the surface. There is no doubt that it was a blast. We even had a station in Gnosjö that picked this up”, says Björn Lund, who is a lecturer in seismology and director of the Swedish national seismic network, which measures Swedish earthquakes and explosions.

Same area
The first explosion was recorded at 02:03 on the night of Monday and the second at 19:04 on Monday evening.

The warnings about the gas leaks came from the Maritime Administration at 1:52 p.m. and 8:41 p.m. on Monday, respectively, after ships detected bubbles on the surface.

SVT has obtained the coordinates of the measured explosions and they are in the same area where the gas leaks were recorded.

“Used to get information about explosions”
The last time a similar seismological event was registered in the area was in 2016. According to Björn Lund, it is not an area that is usually used for exercises by the defense.

“We usually get information about explosions that take place underwater, but sometimes we don’t get it. In this case, we have not received any information.”

According to Björn Lund, the information about the explosions has been forwarded to the Swedish Armed Forces. SVT has asked the Swedish Armed Forces for a comment.

Close enough - computers. While chess is not a solved game, advancements in AI have made it possible for computers to routinely outperform humans when it comes to playing the game of kings. Detecting cheaters in high-level play is notoriously difficult; grandmasters already know the best move in most game situations, needing to consult the hive mind only once or twice in a game to swing it in their favor. And with the easy availability of smartphones and access to cloud-enabled chess engines, it can be a matter of simply stepping out for a restroom break and looking something up.

This is what happens when you have an insane Supreme Court at the state level, and we now have an insane Supreme Court at the federal level.

Five pregnant and postpartum women being held on drug charges in an Alabama jail have been released after lawyers argued their bail conditions were “unconstitutional.”

One of the women, 23-year-old Ashley Banks, was arrested two days after she found out she was pregnant in May of this year and charged with possession of marijuana. She admitted to smoking weed two days earlier and was charged with “chemical endangerment of a child,” according to al.com.

Under Alabama law, this meant she was held in Etowah County jail on a $10,000 cash bond in order to protect her fetus, and couldn’t leave unless she entered a drug rehab program.

Even when Banks’ family raised money for her cash bail, the payment was rejected because her bond conditions required her to have a place at a rehab facility. But specialists who evaluated her found twice that she couldn’t qualify for a place because she didn’t have a substance use disorder.

Burns was held in jail for three months, despite having a high-risk pregnancy and sleeping on the floor due to overcrowding, according to the National Advocates for Pregnant Women (NAPW), who represented Burns and the four other women.

The women were arrested on charges of “chemical endangerment to a child,” a law originally passed in 2006 to protect children from the dangers of methamphetamine labs. But in 2013, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled that law should also cover “unborn children,” and prosecutors across the state started filing more charges against pregnant women.

In October 2021, after years and years of very serious complaints and building momentum organized by activists, a federal grand jury began investigating retired Kansas City, Kansas, police officer Roger Golubski. The wide range of accusations against Golubski, who retired as a detective in 2010, was horrific. It included everything from rape to planting evidence and fabricating testimony. And while various complaints and accusations were levied against Golubski long before 2021, the Kansas City Police Department (KCKPD) and the state’s prosecutors had conveniently been unable to do their jobs in investigating these very serious charges, even after state lawmakers began adding political pressure in 2020.

It took the relentless efforts of activists, and the help of hip-hop mogul Jay-Z and his Team ROC (the justice activism wing and philanthropic arm of his entertainment company), who filed the lawsuit against Kansas City, Kansas, and the Police Department in 2021 over civil rights violations and alleged widespread “misconduct” and corruption, for things to move forward. At the time, Lamonte McIntyre and his mother Rose were directly connected to the lawsuit, as they had accused Golubski of targeting Lamonte in a murder case after Rose had reportedly “rebuffed (Golubski’s) sexual advances.” Lamonte McIntyre served 23 years in jail before being exonerated of the crime.

On Sept. 16, the Department of Justice and the FBI arrested Golubski, who was just indicted on six counts by that very same grand jury. The specific charges for which Golubski has been arrested surround his alleged sexual assaults and rapes of two separate women between 1998 and 2002. This is just the tip of the iceberg, according to many.

….

Golubski’s care for the community that he served has also opened up newspaper investigations into the many unsolved cases of murdered Black women. Cases connected to Golubski. According to the Kansas City Star, FBI investigators believe they can prove Golubski murdered one of the women himself.

And there’s much, much more damage he has done at the link.

The fun part about people who run from service of process at their home or office is that they often get caught in the worst possible place (generally very public). Sometimes I think process servers plan this intentionally.

I did a process serving once, where I carried a gift-wrapped package to the gate of the place he worked, and said Mr. Recipient had to sign for it personally. I think it may have been on his birthday. Got him.

Republican.

I understand that. What I want to understand is why THEY think mail-in ballots are bad. I know it’s going to be some claptrap about fraud, probably having to do with stolen ballots, or signatures, or bamboo fibers, or whatever the latest insanity is. The fact is, they have no factual reason for taking away any-reason mail-in voting, aside from that they want to hover over people’s shoulders and make sure they vote the right way. The idea of a secret ballot is anathema to them; they only care about enforcing the fact that they cannot lose.

Tonight’s Ian update has the projected track hitting Tampa Bay. Perhaps as a major hurricane, but it will be weakening upon landfall.

GFS currently has Ian actually lingering in the Bay for about a day.

GFS accumulated precip through 12Z 30Sep:

That’s a whole lotta rain.

If the Euro track comes true, it means Ian will hit Tampa then Orlando then Jacksonville, three of 4 of Florida’s major population centers.

When we lived on the Gulf coast of FL and a hurricane approached, we’d vacate to friends and family homes on the Atlantic coast. They would do likewise when an Atlantic hurricane threatened.

But we did prep things like fill gas tanks when a hurricane hit Cuba, then hang shutters and leave town 48 hours days before landfall.

“A native Floridian knows three things:
1)) How to maintain a friend’s swimming pool.
2) How to water ski
3) Leave town when threatened with hurricane landfall.”

If you believe that life begins at conception, this is the necessary end of that logic. In addition, this is a religious belief of theirs, so no argument will sway them from it. If you’re afraid of your religion’s god, you’re in an abusive sect, and it’s time to change sects/religions or leave religion behind.

The problem is those who want to impose their version of God on others, and who demonize those of different religions or no religion all, and who make the public space uncomfortable for those who do not share their views of religion and its role in society.

The theme of “God, family, country” may seem benign but it is actually stifling. “Family” is used to limit women’s role to mother and kitchen, subservient to her husband, and limiting family to the most traditional definition.

And “country” is ultra-nationalistic, hostile to immigration of anyone of a different heritage. In one sense, this concept is amazing in Italy because when Rome was at the pinnacle of its power, it was home to a polyglot multi-racial society from places near and far that were under Roman rule or were trading partners with the Roman Republic and then Empire.

Ha’aretz: Israel Announces It Won’t Recognize Russia’s Annexation Referendums

Israel’s Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday that Israel “recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” as Russia holds its fifth and last day of referendums as a prelude to it annexing four Ukrainian regions.

Israel “Will not accept the results of the referendum in the Eastern districts of Ukraine,” the Israeli statement said, in a rare rebuke of Moscow. Russia held votes on whether to join Russia in four Ukrainian regions partly controlled by Moscow - Kherson, Luhansk, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia. The West has said it will not recognize the outcome of what it regards as illegal sham referendums…

“I came to believe Gosar and Gohmert may have had serious cognitive issues,” Riggleman writes of his former colleagues in his new book, “The Breach: The Untold Story of the Investigation into January 6th.”

Wick started out as a passionate supporter of President Franklin Roosevelt’s efforts to overcome the Great Depression.

“We have a New Deal with us now, a Leader fine and good,” she wrote in a “Christmas Sonnet” that she sent out to friends and family in December 1933.

But by this time, like millions of Americans, she’d been out of work for years and was struggling to get by.

She supported the Lundeen Bill, a more comprehensive social-welfare package than the Roosevelt administration’s program. The legislation died in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The bill’s failure infuriated Wick. She now decided the New Deal was fatally flawed - and that it had been set up that way on purpose. If all these relief agencies couldn’t help her, there had to be a dark reason.

That reason, she concluded, had something to do with immigrants and Jews - and rich men in suits conspiring against decent Americans.

It was the “Screw Deal,” put in place by a “ring of gangsters to have indefinite control over the American peons,” she declared.

Speaking of crazy religious cultists. I’ve been avoiding going into this at all, but given where things are right now, it’s probably time to out with it.

In an rather unexpected turn, Israel just told Russia to shove the “referendums” where the sun doesn’t shine:

Ha’aretz: Israel Announces It Won’t Recognize Russia’s Annexation Referendums

Unexpected? People actually thought Israel would recognize these transparently false, illegal annexations?
