It is refreshing, however, not to have a president issuing weather predictions through the use of a Sharpie pen.

And yet Tom Selleck, Kelsey Grammar, Tim Allen, every bit as conservative and Christian, have no problem finding work. Even Nick Searcy and Jon Voight work on a pretty regular basis. One of the Pythons is a right-winger, he can work whenever he wants as much as he wants.

It’s the Kevin Sorbos of this world, the Scott Baios and Victoria Jacksons, talentless people who the only reason they ever had even the one job was because they looked the part… it’s a conspiracy that nobody wants them for anything else. (oh, and Kirk Cameron. He turns down any job that isn’t “christian” enough, but his sister works.)

Well, I don’t know her politics. But I know she’s a real problem for the Iranian state. The Iranian government has recently veen implicated in efforts to intimidate Alinejad, who is in exile in NYC. She promoted White Wednesdays, where women in Iran wear white to protest the dress code. She has posted videos of women removing their hijabs. She is one of the conduits through which videos about what’s going on in Iran after the murder of Mahsa Amini are coming. That’s what I know.

In a short letter to the Governor’s Office, Moore did not explain exactly why he opted to resign.

“Please accept this notification of my resignation, effective this date of Sept. 23, 2022, from the Gadsden County Board of County Commissioners,” Moore wrote. “Thank you for the opportunity to have served in the position, however for personal reasons I am no longer able to continue.”

Moore did not respond to questions about his resignation, the photo or the KKK outfit. In an email to the Tallahassee Democrat, he said he was “in the middle of hurricane preparations” and would be in contact on Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, he has not replied.

The Governor’s Office did not respond to multiple inquiries about Moore’s resignation or the photograph.

I was at Harrah’s in New Orleans recently. I was a little buzzed so I thought I’d plop $500 on a blackjack table and play for a few hours. I’m walking toward where the $20 tables are, and I glanced at a roulette table because I noticed that there were not two but three THREE!!! zeros on it! And not only were there three zeros on it, all three were next to each other! 3-zero roulette is like a 9% edge to the house. Anyway, there’s this dude at the table with boxing gloves tattooed on his head, and I watched him shovel around $400 onto the table on every damn bet you could imagine. Of course, he lost it all on the one spin. He looked at me and said “I love this game” without a hint of sarcasm. I replied “Enjoy poverty.”

But once sea level rise is measured in meters and not inches then it is game over for all these low lying cities around the world.

re: #76 sagehen

With big enough, strong enough walls, and a enough good pumping system, Venice could be as salvageable as… Rotterdam and New Orleans.

Both of which are doomed as sea levels rise.

Yes, the Dutch saved their coastal areas against tidal erosion, using a great deal of engineering and effort.

New Orleans hangs by a thread. Any major hurricane hit will once again show the problems that city faces.

I get that people want hope. And as I acknowledge, given enough money one can save these coastal low-lying cities.

But we’re looking at meters of sea level rise in the next few centuries. For a place like southern Louisiana that means hurricane surges going many miles inland from the current coast.

If a community wants to spend its resources saving a city from sea water then good for them. But what in the long run is accomplished if you spend all your resources on a project that will last but a century?

New Orleans has been an European settlement since (checks notes) 1718. That’s 304 years ago. Do you really think New Orleans is going to be saved by 2326? And even if you can build a wall around the city and build it up to survive, the entire region of southern Louisiana will be under water, making New Orleans an island.

The larger problem is that the Mississippi is a major transportation network and the ports at the mouth of the Mississippi are vital to trade. The problem of losing New Orleans is just the beginning of problems wrt sea level rise.

There is nobility in trying to save the works of the past such as cities. Nevertheless, it is my opinion that it will be a better investment of resources to simply move cities to higher ground.

Possibly some young guy who made a ton (in his young experience) of money and now finds life isn’t that much more meaningful having a pocket full of cash so he decides he needs a thrill?

Models are indicating Sarasota is now the target for Ian’s landfall. If Ian remains a major hurricane that will be quite devastating especially for the barrier islands.

Added: Casinos are now paying 6/5 on blackjack instead of the standard 3/2, which increases their advantage to about 2.5%, and every donkey will play it all night long. I saw it with my own two eyes.

Good lord. Just take the money you were prepared to play with, hand it to the dealer, and head over to the buffet.

DOJ’s response is both amusing and perfectly correct.

However, Trump did not actually bring a lawsuit. He is using the US legal system to create a festival of grievances for his adoring fans by filing a frivolous lawsuit and making frivolous arguments in it.

It would behoove DOJ to point that out in one of its briefs.

re: #104 Backwoods_Sleuth

Since we are discussing saving cities:

With a slightly more eastward track now, Ian is probably going to hit between the Tampa and Ft. Meyers area. The storm surge will be greatest southeast of landfall, and here is the current projection for storm surge in the Ft. Meyers/Cape Coral area:

Red means above 9 feet, orange means above 6 feet.

The community northwest of Ft. Meyers is Cape Coral, a huge planned community built up over wetlands containing a great many residences, mostly for older people who retired there:

goo.gl

The mean elevation of downtown Cape Coral is 1m above sea level. The various neighborhoods are between 2 and 3 meters above sea level.

What do you think will happen here with 6 to 9 feet storm surges?

Maybe they’ll get lucky and not have surges that high. Or maybe Ian will turn just a tad bit farther east and Cape Coral will be hit with the eye wall.

hi

I’m going to bed. (There’s an introduction.)

We made it to Labrador. We are in Port Hope Simpson, Labrador. It is about three times larger than our town.

Obligatory pictures.

Blanc-Sablon, Québec

Blanc-Sablon, Québec. This is the ferry destination from St. Barbe, Newfoundland. From here you can pretty much only drive to Labrador. (The road runs out if you go west.)

L’Anse-Amour Lighthouse. The second-largest in Canada.

As second-largest, perhaps it tries harder. You can see all the fog in the middle of the day when I took this. The Labrador Coastal Road is no fun in the fog.

We wanted to see Battle Harbour, but it is closed for the season. We’ll have to catch that on the next trip.

One more thing. We will be here tonight and tomorrow night. After that, we travel to Goose Bay and leave this weird-ass half-hour time zone.

Which is not a real thing.

Base 10 arithmetic and English names for numbers have little to do with law or human development.

Race isn’t a thing either, but we use words to divide people among other things.

The thing about the teenage years is that they closely map to the puberty to young adult years. So, we do group the teenage years together. But here they are being used to hide real information.

Key west getting a bit of wind.

Don’t miss hurricanes after moving out of FL.

The Andrew aftermath was too-true-to-life-dystopian, no power for ~10 days, grocery stores check out using paper logs, while the store is throwing out tons of once frozen meat & food into 35 yard dump trucks, eating food out of the freezer before it defrosts, cooking using my coleman white gas stove (you can use unleaded), waking up at 4 AM when the breeze off the bay dies and it’s 90 degrees and high humidity - wondering if I should get up and take a cold shower (at least we had city water), clearing downed trees and shrubbery in my yard and neighbors’ - my chain saws got a workout.

The subsequent FL tropical storms & hurricanes were a piece of cake by comparison, but I moved last from the area going to get slammed by a potential slow moving hurricane with a massive rain load. Flooding & wind damage.

Desantis said he is getting the help from FEMA that he needs, but hasn’t spoken to Biden: “You got people’s lives at stake .. property at stake, and we don’t have time for pettiness. We got to work together .. My phone line is open.”

and THAT’S real reasom

How’d that work for Christie?

‘My phone line is open.”

DeSantis’ own petty ego and need for displays of dominance won’t even let him call Biden to ask for help. That would be seen as a sign of weakness and negate the constant Conservative propaganda that the Federal Government need not really even exist.

I will be showing up at the polls soon, as I hope all other Floridians will be. We must throw these Republican cretins and hypocrites out.
