Apparently the former guy’s lawyers have filed their airing of grievances “response” to the DOJ’s motion in which they informed Dearie that no vendor would contract with the former guy or his team, and needed to amend the schedule so they could select a vendor themselves.

Well damn. Naples, Florida took it in the neck. Kristen (principal bassoon) and Matt, (principal trumpet) are members of the Naples Symphony Orchestra. Old friends. We are ginning up the jungle telegraph to get ahold of them (and other members of that Orchestra we know) to offer aid and refuge.

This storm is horrific in scope, and this is just Day One. Their problem may be even getting here.

When will Dearie be ruling on this? Could he declare judgement against Trump and end this now?

Now that NFT’s have joined tulip bulbs in the history of market bubbles based on worthless (or near worthless) products, is it too much to hope that the same fate will befall crypto? Or does crypto have sufficient real value in facilitating criminal exchanges to allow its continued existence?

re: #16 No Malarkey!

I believe he set a deadline to finish the document review in October.

The executive privilege matter was supposed to have been resolved by this Friday; it sounds like the government is moving to push that back by a week due to the delay in getting a vendor to work with the former guy. TFG claims, by the way, that the reason a vendor won’t work with him is because there are 200,000 pages of documents across the 11,000 documents repossessed, which sounds like rather an undercount for government documents, but also just a flat-out excuse. Neither Dearie nor the government would suggest that they could set such an ambitious schedule if they didn’t already have a sense of the pace at which such a review could proceed.

Note Charlie’s presumption of authority: “THEY will have to prove to US.” This is quite common among RW tools. Terrorist kingpin Stewart Rhodes once threatened to “withdraw our recongition and support” from law enforcement agencies that tried to enforce covid lockdowns, as though such agencies require his approval to operate. Believe these people when they tell you who they are.

Oof, I heard it was a drunken Barrack’s fight. Even when I was in the AF back in the late 70’s/early 80’s, a DWI was an indication that you were incapable of self-control, got you dumped back down to E-2, and meant that you couldn’t re-up even if you wanted to. You were persona non grata and you were going to get separated.

It was worse than punching your sergeant, which in many cases, depending on your sergeant, was later ruled justifiable. This was how you weeded out toxic non-coms.

Fortunately, I was an officer and a gentleman, and only had to save my Boom Operator, a Tech Sergeant, from any Courts Martial when he got horribly drunk one night in Spain (Zaragoza) and offered to kick everyone’s ass in the NCO club (I was told his come on was “Big ones one at a time, little ones in a bunch.”

Informed of the situation, I skedaddled over to the NCO Club, gained entry, grabbed a large pitcher of water, and threw it in Terry’s face. He roared and charged me, recognized me and said “Co, what are you doing here?” I said, “Keeping your ass in the Air Force, you stupid pollack. Follow me or you are going to the brig.”

So he followed me, and I took him to transient housing. He broke down in tears. We had been in the UK for over a month, supporting the Falklands war, and he was just lonely and missed his wife. And he got drunk. And he was a really bad drunk.

We got him back to the States. He was a really, really good boom operator. Never ever made a mistake.

As was feared, Ft. Meyers and Cape Coral are hard hit.

It’s not the right time to be judgmental, yet I noticed this person picked up on a topic about which I ranted less than two days ago:

We as a society simply want to pretend that we can get away with whatever we wish. While years ago the developers may have argued that hurricanes were unlikely to destroy the city, we now know that rising sea levels will doom those kind of projects.

Floridians already pay very high premiums to cover their housing. And insurance will keep going up. And up and up.

The recent silence had me wondering. Then I saw the below tweet.
(This is just one temporary solution. I also suspect that a number of nations are working with the Ukrainians about this. Remember that the Iranians were bombing Saudi oil storage tanks with drones recently.)

Well, yeah, but now do New Orleans. There is several billions of dollars of infrastructure in NO. Let’s just abandon it and rebuild up in Baton Rouge? And what about the housing stock in NO?

Do you know the history of the Morganza Spillway north Baton Rouge into the Atchafayalla Basin? It was built after the disastrous 1927 Mississippi River floods and has worked kinda sort ok, but everybody is scared to death these days because climate change resets the rules. If the Morganza Spillway fails, the Mississippi River will revert to its old channel (the Atchafalaya) and exit into the Gulf at Morgan City. The old channel from the Spillway south, from Baton Rouge, through NO to the extremities of the Birdsfoot Delta will start to silt up and become unusable.

All of the infrastructure from Baton Rouge, south, will be unusable. That’s 40% of the US refining capacity.

Oops.

Just speculating here, but I do know a little something about this subject. The accuracy of Ukrainian targeting in general suggests to me that there is some capability at work that is not public knowledge, probably furnished by the US/NATO.
For example, it is not that HIMARS can hit Russian ammunition dumps (their accuracy is public knowledge), it is that the Ukrainians always know exactly where to aim them. It could be something as simple as a very highly placed mole in the Russian command structure, one who has reliable and secure communication with the west. It might also be some exotic technology or analytical system that was developed and produced in secret. It is not just business as usual, though. It will be interesting to find out.

Much worse. The 1906 quake was basically SF shooting it’s wad. That was pretty much, within a couple of tenths, all of the energy that the Strike/Slip San Andreas fault complex could possibly store before rupturing. Its 7.9 was probably maxing out the available storage capacity of the fault.

The Cascade Subduction Fault, on the other paw, can hold up to a Nine + amount level of energy, and we don’t know the upper level of that number

It could approach a 10 or so rupture, and keep in mind a subduction rupture doesn’t crack like a little dot with concentric circles around it. When one cuts loose, the kinetic energy stored in a length of subducting seafloor hundreds of miles long can snap upward almost instantaneously (well, it’s a rupture) at up to a significant portion of a mile, at least several hundred feet or yards, displacing non-compressible water into a wall that is heading in two directions: Japan, lots of time later, and the Pacific NW, 30 minutes away.

And it’ll bring a 100’ wall of water into Oregon, Washington, and the Puget Sound. Which would kind of suck.

I also had no idea. So I had to look it up. Apparently made out of leaded crystal glass. Do not appear to have valves.

A glass flute or crystal flute is a glass instrument briefly popular in the early 19th century. These flutes preserved pitch and tone during temperature change better than the wood and ivory flutes available at the time of their manufacture. Most were made by Claude Laurent, a French craftsman and clockmaker who patented the leaded crystal glass flute in 1806. They became obsolete after metal flutes were produced.

Claude Laurent’s glass flutes were manufactured in Paris in the early 19th century. Some are lead crystal and some are potash glass. Today 185 of Laurent’s instruments are known to survive. The US Library of Congress holds 17 of these.

The most famous example is a particularly elegant crystal flute made in 1813 that Laurent sent to James Madison to commemorate his second inauguration as US President. The flute was rescued from the White House in April 1814 by Dolley Madison as the British entered Washington, DC during the War of 1812. In 2022 Musical artist Lizzo was invited by Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden to play the Madison crystal flute. While at the Library of Congress, Lizzo requested to play the flute in concert. She briefly played it onstage at Capital One Arena while twerking.

And the axe falls:

“The Massachusetts National Guard considers the conduct of this soldier to be inappropriate and inconsistent with our military values,” Col. Mark Kalin, Commander, Massachusetts Army National Guard, said in a statement to the Times. “We are currently working to ensure our service member is evaluated and receives any services he may need, while also reviewing appropriate disciplinary actions. The incident is currently under investigation and no further information is available at this time.”

This is basically vigilante action, and nuts besides, since a National Guard officer has no authority to be enforcing the law or whatever the hell this weirdo was trying to do. He is a full time employee of the Mass Guard. Every large Guard unit has a number of full time cadre personnel who keep things running while everyone else is out doing their civilian stuff. These are critical personnel and there is no way this guy should be left in this assignment, or in the Guard at all.

Heh, much of the movie was filmed in Pittsburgh.

I actually got to watch part of the scene (starting around 4:09) get filmed. It was filmed at the rear of the Oakland branch of the Carnegie Library. I was a grad student at the time and would walk around to try and wake up after hours at the computer.

Iirc, that one scene took two days to film. The director had Beale do just about every combination of walk, run, hop, etc down the stairs and go to the car.

Amusing factoid…

The male actor was really uncomfortable with his supposed pet dog. So they had the dog handler hidden (folded up) in the back of the sports car. And they had to take a break every once in a while to let the handler get out of the back of the car and stretch.

We shall see. We have to remember that Putin is not acting rationally at this point. If he was, he would realize that he will not prevail in Ukraine, yet he insists on throwing fresh cannon fodder into the fray. That’s not the action of a rational leader - the rational course of action would be to withdraw, negotiate some kind of truce, then reorganize his military and rearm and have another go at it in ten or fifteen years time.

And while I certainly agree that logically, it would be unbelievably stupid to bomb your pipeline and cut off a major source of income, people (ordinary people like us or sometimes leaders of nations) don’t always think or act logically - or it may well seem logical to that particular person, even if it seems completely insane to the rest of us (I’m thinking of the example of family annihilator-type killers such as John List or Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès).

What he does now with the “referenda” is actually “rational” in the “rat in panic” rational, villainous sort of way. And he probably thinks he can prolong the war long enough that Ukraine’s allies get tired, Ukrainians get tired (esp. in cold winter) and he either gets a good deal on what he has occupied so far or can even advance. Remember, he doesn’t do internet and gets his info from thin red folders, and his own generals probably wouldn’t tell him about all the problems with the mobilization etc. GIGO — the end effect of a sorta rational policy based on bad data may seem indistinguishable from the end effect of an irrational policy.

Anyway, if Putin is indeed into the endurance game, then NS2 must have been an important part of it, like a carrot before a donkey’s nose. And now he no longer has the carrot.

That’s a good point; Garbage in, garbage out. And from an outsider’s POV, it would certainly look like irrational decisions.

I wonder what he’ll do regarding those sham referendums - will he go all-in and officially proclaim them to be Russia, or will he (as I’ve seen mentioned on the web) put that decision off for the time being and try to use that issue as a bargaining chip in some future negotiations?

Note that what we see as Putin’s fatally irrational decision - invading Ukraine in Feb. - must have seemed rational to him at the time based on garbage data about his sorry excuse of an army. Taking Kiev in three days, had that been achievable, would have been pretty much a crushing blow. So had that been achievable, the invasion must have seemed rational (again, thoroughly evil too, but that’s another story).

As I mentioned a few days ago, preserves/jam prices have shot up.

Sadly my favorite, boysenberry, is among those whose price is now pushing luxury territory.

Boysenberries are fascinating, being a hybrid of several species in the genus Rubus, species from both Europe and North America, with the European raspberry being the primary ancestor.

Boysenberries combine the strong flavor of said raspberries with the sweeter flavors of American blackberries/loganberries.

Anyway, however boysenberries are bought they usually are not cheap.

The hybrids were first identified on a farm in Orange County, California. That was a century ago when Orange County was still an important agricultural region, before it was turned into suburbamania/Disneyland.

Seriously? Did they not know that a goddamn hurricane was coming?

It’s not like an earthquake (a common enough natural disaster for those of us who are from the Pacific Coast) which can strike without warning.

My question was actually going to be, “‘Did not,’ or ‘could not?’” Evacuating a hurricane isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do, especially if you don’t have someone you can crash with that can help absorb some of the cost. With that said, undoubtedly there are a lot of proud people who are like, “Fuck that, gubmint ain’t tellin’ me what to do, if I die in this hurricane, then oh well! My body becomes their problem to clean up!”

re: #159 Dopamine Fish

And of course, the problematic part of my question here is that, in a state that is prone to hurricanes, you would THINK that the state would have funds set up for people who are materially unable to afford evacuation, so that citizens shouldn’t have to choose between “groceries for the next 2-3 months” and “getting out of the way of this goddamn hurricane”. But Governor DeathSentence would rather spend money on political stunts that fuck up people’s lives than protect his own citizens.

re: #157 Dr Lizardo

The early evacuation orders did not cover as far south as the Ft. Myers area.

They had a hurricane watch on Monday but did not have a hurricane warning until Tuesday, about 24 hours before it hit.

The NHC warned that predicting Ian’s path was going to be tricky because it was being influenced by a large low pressure trough to the north, and those troughs are difficult to predict how far south they will dip.

Also - there were storm surge watches earlier, but as usual a lot of people don’t take head of those.

Fair enough, that’s understandable (ill-advised, but understandable). But like you, I suspect there’s more than a few of those AIN’T NO GUBMINT MAN GONNA TELL ME WHAT TO DO! USA! USA!! types who simply refuse to evacuate under any circumstances.

Hurricanes do have a level of uncertainty about them. I live in Tampa and was expecting to get slammed up until the last minute. Heck I was going to book a room in what was looking like a safe Fort Myers. All we got was some rain and wind. I lost a few screens on the lanai.

I am not in an evacuation zone but judging by the videos I have seen I am not sure how much it would have mattered.

Fair enough. Maybe if there were a person, a chief executive of the state of Florida, let’s say, whose job would be the see to it that those who needed to be evacuated (but couldn’t for the reasons you mentioned) would be taken to safety.

And maybe that person - let’s call them a “governor”, for lack of a better term - would make sure that they weren’t wasting their time pursuing fatuous nonsense, and be focused on the very real and oncoming danger to the public.

Alas….if only such a person existed in the state of Florida.

One of the arguments about “getting back to work” during Covid was that “People die of Covid, but they also die of poverty!”

People don’t die of poverty. They die from lack of proper nutrition, shelter and health care because our Economy has decided that poor people should not have access to such things.

I truly believe that we must find some sense of community and apply that to government and how money gets spent. We are not fundamentally kind to those outside our “group”, whatever category we divide ourselves into. There are lots of kind humans out there, but the world as it stands now does not allow for that to be a guiding force. Our economic system is cruel by design, what we have is a system that encourages us to blame and hate on those without wealth and while we fight among ourselves and struggle financially, the rich are robbing us blind and laughing at how fucking stupid we are for blaming each other.

I am for capping personal wealth at 50 million dollars. If you can’t live on that then fuck you. Give your CEO job or whatever the fuck to someone who can. Pour the rest of that wealth into paying employees above livable wages, benefits and invest in safe workplaces. And tax these motherfuckers at 70 percent like we used to. And maybe burn KStreet to the ground while we’re at it, lots of evil comes from that place.

The Fifth Circuit will end DACA soon, subjecting hundreds of thousands of Dreamers to potential deportation. The Biden Administration will act to provide them some protection from deportation, but they will lose their right to work legally in the U.S. If the Democrats retain the House and expand their Senate majority, immigration reform could be passed next year. Sinema and John Cornyn are working on a bipartisan bill, but I doubt that there will be enough GOP Senators signing on to defeat the filibuster unless it includes funding for Sippy Cup Caligula’s Wall.

I recently read that if you have an income of $8 million, that’s enough money to pay other people to do all the tedious chores we don’t like, live in a nice home, take dream vacations, and otherwise maximize your happiness. Every dollar above that is just running up the score.

The difficulty is in enforcing that. What defines an “income” of $8M? CEOs are paid in the low 7 figures (looks like the median CEO is around $3.5M/yr in raw cash), but make far more than that in bonuses, options, and other benefits. The interplay here is just frustrating to work through. Yes, I want employees to have incentive to materially contribute to the company bottom line (bonuses). Yes, I want employees to be invested in the future of the company (stock options, ESPP). I don’t want the fabulously wealthy to be able to abuse these mechanisms to hide income and place themselves far above the ordinary man in the warehouse or data center.

Modern wealth is not about owning physical assets, it’s about owning patents and licenses and rights to use ideas, brands and names.

Heck, companies don’t even own their offices, they lease everything down to office equipment and simply commission factories to produce their goods under their guidelines.

And abstract concepts like licenses, patents and brand names are hard to quantify, which makes modern bookkeeping an arcane form of numerical alchemy.

About those HIMARS:

The Pentagon announced a new $1.1 billion Ukraine aid package yesterday that included, “18 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and associated ammunition.” While the news generated a great deal of initial excitement, it didn’t take long for people to notice the fine print. “Unlike Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA), which DoD has continued to leverage to deliver equipment to Ukraine from DoD stocks at a historic pace, USAI [Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative ] is an authority under which the United States procures capabilities from industry,” the Pentagon’s press release explained. “This announcement represents the beginning of a contracting process to provide additional priority capabilities to Ukraine in the mid- and long-term.”

In other words, the U.S. has given Ukraine money to go shopping, but such weapons deliveries arrive whenever the manufacturers can get that equipment to them. Items like Humvees are likely plentiful, and should arrive quickly. HIMARS, not so much, and might take as long as two years.

Yet that’s not the problem that many make it out to be. Ukraine’s bottleneck is the same it has always been—ammunition. The U.S. and allies simply don’t have enough HIMARS rockets to feed Ukraine’s insatiable hunger for more.

Many Wall Street firms essentially cap their salaries at around 250k. The rest is all bonuses, options, and other incentives structured specifically to minimize taxes.

How many missiles does a drone of this type carry?

It can carry up to 800 lbs of ordnance and other payload, per Wiki. The wiki says it can carry up to 4 Hellfires or 4 2-pods of Stinger anti-aircraft missiles; it also says the base version can carry 2 Hellfires and a signals intelligence package for 14-15 hours, while the improved version can loiter with the same loadout for 35 hours.

They use specialized high-efficiency diesel engines for these drones because they don’t have to fly fast or far, they just have to stay in the air. That, and the majority of their weight and size is fuel tanks.

Speaking of DeSantis, look for all his bluster about mail-in balloting being some sort of issue to all of a sudden drop away as thousands of Republican voters may be unable to live in their houses or have lost their homes.

DeSantis, What a turd fraud.

Just watched that sheriff walk that back all the way to I dunno how many, if any, based his earlier on 911 calls.

Initial reports of casualties are often wildly inaccurate; you have to wait a couple days to get a reliable count.

As others here have mentioned, evacuations are complicated. Often, it’s unclear where the hurricanes will hit until very late, not giving people sufficient time to leave affected areas. Doing it in advance, you end up with a much wider area of evacuation, leading to roads with gridlock and cars stuck for hours trying to flee, and perhaps heading to more dangerous sites.

Given the current state of federal law, this will probably go nowhere. They might get the shooter and family, but the companies are all protected by GOFP laws.

This dude is an elder at that “church” near my house. Seeing this land in my timeline had me press the button on ordering foam board for protesting.

“James White is OK with assaulting a 72 YO man.” Or something. I’ll figure it out.

ETA: (1) Mark Houck apparently used his children as human shields when it came time for the FBI to arrest him.
(2) This is the “church” where the leadership (which James is a part of) believes that people who obtain abortions should be executed.

Me being a non-passive person, if that scumbag had done that to my father he would not be sitting in jail. He would be attempting to recover in the ICU.

Um, aren’t musical instruments meant to be played? And part of maintenance is actually playing them?

Something, I dunno, can’t quite put my finger on it, tells me it wouldn’t be “controversial” in ol’ Ben’s parlance if it’d been Ian Anderson playing the thing.

“It’s not a ban - they’re widely available elsewhere.” Except you’re ALSO demanding that book stores stop selling these books. Face it: You and your ilk want to ban books. It’s just not as easy for you as you would like.

And are only those voters whose candidates won allowed to decide? Even though taxpayer monies come from those who voted for other candidates?

On the underground cyber war between Russia and Ukraine/West

I fully expected the Russians to simply shut down the Ukrainian power, transportation and communications grid, disrupting Ukraine’s ability to react long enough for them to come in and seize key points and pretty much end the war within 72 hours.

That is also probably the outcome they were promising Putin as well.

1. It highly likely that Norway is not alone in taking these actions.

2. Actions against energy infrastructure would not be an unexpected follow-on to the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines. And since the world energy infrastructure is globalized, the victim of such an action would not even have to be Western or Western aligned.

There has been a lot of ‘noise’ (but nothing that seems authoritative) on twitter that Russia has now shut down its pipeline into Hungary and Serbia.

Ukraine had shut it down for a few days in August because Gazprom had not paid the monthly rent. The EU also had decided to _not_ sanction it.

The closest that I have seen is this article from The Times.

Gas prices surged last night on fears that Russia may be preparing to halt flows through one of the two remaining pipeline routes that it is still using to send gas to Europe.

European gas prices were up about 19 per cent while UK gas prices jumped by 27 per cent to close at almost 305p per therm, according to analysts at Icis, the price reporting agency. That is about six times higher than the historical average, albeit still well below highs of more than 600p a therm seen last month.

Tangentially related — I’m a bit too young to remember most of the Cold War, except the last few years — however, I thought that even during the worst days of Soviet Union, they never actually tried to shut off oil supplies, just like we always sold them precision ball bearings, and sometimes even machines to make precision ball bearings.

It just seems to me that Putin, at least this past decade has lost his sense of rationality, which the old Soviets had at least since the Cuban Missile Crisis. Or at least rationally not wanting to blow up the entire world and destroy their own power.

Putin is banking on Russia’s ability/willingness to suffer being greater than the West’s and that at some point the West will cave and allow him to declare Ukraine his sphere of Interest.

But it seems that the Russian cyberattacks against Estonia in 2007 and later in Ukraine woke up a lot of folks in the security field. Russia.

Btw:
Russia is still screwing around with NATO ally Estonia -

VILNIUS, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Estonia has repelled “the most extensive cyber attacks since 2007”, it said on Thursday, shortly after removing Soviet monuments in a region with an ethnic Russian majority.

Russian hacker group Killnet claimed responsibility for the attack, stating on its Telegram account on Wednesday it had blocked access to more than 200 state and private Estonian institutions, such as an online citizen identification system.

re: #239 Hecuba’s daughter

Initial reports of casualties are often wildly inaccurate; you have to wait a couple days to get a reliable count.

As others here have mentioned, evacuations are complicated. Often, it’s unclear where the hurricanes will hit until very late, not giving people sufficient time to leave affected areas. Doing it in advance, you end up with a much wider area of evacuation, leading to roads with gridlock and cars stuck for hours trying to flee, and perhaps heading to more dangerous sites.

Case in point - I am from Tampa and I almost booked a hotel for me and my family is Fort Myers to ride out the storm here. I didn’t go through with it because this is not my first storm. They never seem to go precisely where they think it will go…until they do.

Stop. This leads to not doing anything, because failure is preordained. (And the courts aren’t wholly corrupt or DT would be in the middle of his second term.)

They did. Remington was in bankruptcy proceeding for the second time and they had 4 insurance companies that could split the cost of the settlement.
