The World Should Know

Sun, May 18, 2003 at 9:10:56 am PDT

Smadar Haran Kaiser is an Israeli whose family was murdered in 1979 by a Lebanese terrorist named Samir Kuntar, sent by Abu Abbas to “protest the signing of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty.” This is her heartrending story: The World Should Know What He Did to My Family.

It had been a peaceful Sabbath day. My husband, Danny, and I had picnicked with our little girls, Einat, 4, and Yael, 2, on the beach not far from our home in Nahariya, a city on the northern coast of Israel, about six miles south of the Lebanese border. Around midnight, we were asleep in our apartment when four terrorists, sent by Abu Abbas from Lebanon, landed in a rubber boat on the beach two blocks away. Gunfire and exploding grenades awakened us as the terrorists burst into our building. They had already killed a police officer. As they charged up to the floor above ours, I opened the door to our apartment. In the moment before the hall light went off, they turned and saw me. As they moved on, our neighbor from the upper floor came running down the stairs. I grabbed her and pushed her inside our apartment and slammed the door.

Outside, we could hear the men storming about. Desperately, we sought to hide. Danny helped our neighbor climb into a crawl space above our bedroom; I went in behind her with Yael in my arms. Then Danny grabbed Einat and was dashing out the front door to take refuge in an underground shelter when the terrorists came crashing into our flat. They held Danny and Einat while they searched for me and Yael, knowing there were more people in the apartment. I will never forget the joy and the hatred in their voices as they swaggered about hunting for us, firing their guns and throwing grenades. I knew that if Yael cried out, the terrorists would toss a grenade into the crawl space and we would be killed. So I kept my hand over her mouth, hoping she could breathe. As I lay there, I remembered my mother telling me how she had hidden from the Nazis during the Holocaust. “This is just like what happened to my mother,” I thought.

As police began to arrive, the terrorists took Danny and Einat down to the beach. There, according to eyewitnesses, one of them shot Danny in front of Einat so that his death would be the last sight she would ever see. Then he smashed my little girl’s skull in against a rock with his rifle butt. That terrorist was Samir Kuntar.

By the time we were rescued from the crawl space, hours later, Yael, too, was dead. In trying to save all our lives, I had smothered her.

Joel N. emailed this link to me, and he commented: “To prove nothing has really changed, the accompanying photograph shows Palestinians protesting Abbas’ arrest by the US in Iraq.”

Like I always said: it's not about land, it's not about the demand of return. It's about killing Jews. Period.

I wonder what they're going to do with him now they have him.

2 cba  Sun, May 18, 2003 7:24:18am

I was living in Israel when this happened. The detail of her accidentally smothering her 2 year old in her attempts to keep her quiet has always stayed with me. That seemed (and still seems) the most horrific detail of all.

3 ploome  Sun, May 18, 2003 7:28:55am

2 cba

I remember that also..

I cant imagine the pain that woman has..

4 Jeffersonian  Sun, May 18, 2003 7:29:31am

Unspeakable. Abbas needs to swing for his crimes and the "Palestinians" sent a message that their ethnicity is not a blanket immunity for indiviuals who choose to murder, rape and destroy in their name. The word "Palestinian" is rapidly becoming synonymous with psychotic criminality and a total lack of civilized ethics.

5 darren  Sun, May 18, 2003 7:43:36am

Instead of seeing Sharon today, President Bush will be reading this article (i hope). The associated press has actually released its article about the last 4 terrorist attacks with real details about these attacks. Jews killed were actually described as human beings. How sad it is that this is the first time we've witnessed decent reporting.

but now i'm off to the NYT for a reality check. pessimism...ON!

6 Paladin  Sun, May 18, 2003 7:43:38am

Allah has no regard for human life, why should his followers? After all, they don't believe non-Moslems are human.

Convert to Islam or die. that's the agenda, folks. And it hasn't changed since the 7th century.

Every time I think my disgust for these asshats couldn't sink any lower, they prove me wrong.

7 mommydoc  Sun, May 18, 2003 7:43:40am

Yeah, but they were only Jews. It's not like they were innocent Palestinians, the family members of a glorious martyr who were humiliated by checkpoints and had their home bulldozed. Now that's something to be outraged about. Not the death of some evil Jewish Zionists.

Is it just me or does the bad news seem to be escalating?

8 cba  Sun, May 18, 2003 7:48:47am

mommydoc:

Is it just me or does the bad news seem to be escalating?

Israel eased up on the checkpoints and other security measures, remember? To show goodwill...

And now there's a rash of successful killings. Colour me shocked. /sarcasm

9 Wild Justice  Sun, May 18, 2003 7:57:08am

And just when I thought I was done crying for the day.

I am so ripped up inside ...

10 Cowgirl Carrie  Sun, May 18, 2003 7:59:32am

The other day, when I was talking with a former friend about the killing, I was assured that it would stop if the Palestinians were to be given their land back. When I commented about how horrible it is that the Pals are killing civilians, he commented that "they're just settlers it's their own fault". But then, this is the same guy who said the Kurds were the scourge and Saddam had a right to massacre them because they're not "real Iraqis" and not really his people.

Why do I talk with him? Because I keep thinking that somewhere--there has to be some real compassion in his soul...I'm still trying to find the nice guy I once knew...

Then you read something like this and wonder if anyone who knows what's really happening and has a heart could ever side with the homicide bombers....

11 Photios  Sun, May 18, 2003 8:22:06am

What a horrible story. I hope it is read by millions.

1. Finally a story in a prominant liberal paper that portrays jewish victims of Arab terror as human and that terror as tragic. This vice the usual portrayal of terror (in the liberal press) as a response to "occupation" (the quotes because I maintain that that is Israeli land, forfeited by the Arabs because of their refusal of a Palestinian state in preference for killing Jews).

2. Why are Abbas and Arafat still breathing?

3. Why are people who support Arafat, Abbas, Kuntar, (insert list of millions here) still being offered a state that they have previously refused?

4. Transfer.

Faster please

13 endnprbias  Sun, May 18, 2003 8:24:01am

to cowboy carrie:
you will never convince this person what is right and what is wrong.
next time, engage him in a talk, get him to say something really stupid, like the settlers (sic) had them coming.
then tell him he's a racist, anti-semite terrorist sympathizer - that he should be locked up for the safety of everyone everywhere, and say that you would no sooner have a conversation with adolf hitler than him.
get up and leave, report him to the fbi, and never ever
say another word to him

14 Wild Justice  Sun, May 18, 2003 8:33:32am

Cowgirl Carrie,

endnprbias forgot to mention one thing. You know those cowgirl boots of yours? One or two hard knocks to the testicles.

One for the "settlers", one for the Kurds.

I will debate confused people until the cows come home. I will debate stupid people until the cows come home. I will debate the misinformed, the moronic, and the mixed-up.

But those without a heart are a waste of time.

15 Susan  Sun, May 18, 2003 8:43:19am

What a terrible story. And this poor woman was the daughter of a Holocaust survivor.

Just truly sickening. That poor little girl being forced to watch her father die before they smashed her brains out.

Wonder when someone's gonna nominate Abu Abbas for a Nobel Prize?

(sarcasm off).

16 Caton  Sun, May 18, 2003 8:45:13am

Cowgirl Carrie,

Don't forget the spurs before following Wild Justice's advice.

17 Susan  Sun, May 18, 2003 8:45:41am

#4, Jeffersonian:

"The word "Palestinian" is rapidly becoming synonymous with psychotic criminality and a total lack of civilized ethics."

Unfortunately, this isn't true. They are still the innocent little lamby-darlings being beaten up on by the big bad Zionazis. Maybe Americans are horrified by their behavior, but no one else is.

18 Caton  Sun, May 18, 2003 8:46:27am

#15 Susan

Wonder when someone's gonna nominate Abu Abbas for a Nobel Prize?

2004 Nobel Peace Prize.

19 Wild Justice  Sun, May 18, 2003 8:50:26am

Caton,

Rusty spurs.

20 Jeffersonian  Sun, May 18, 2003 8:58:10am

#17 Susan...I'm loathe to admit it, but you're probably more right than wrong. The moral rot goes deep, does it not?

21 Mitch Polka  Sun, May 18, 2003 8:59:04am

#10 Cowgirl Carrie
Why do I talk with him? Because I keep thinking that somewhere--there has to be some real compassion in his soul...I'm still trying to find the nice guy I once knew...

"Your enemy is never a villain in his own eyes. Keep this in mind; it may offer a way to make him your friend. If not, you can kill him without hate -- and quickly."
Lazarus Long

Go live in on a "settlement" & your "friend" will blithely consign you to the flames. You need to be more selective in your choice of friends.

22 Keelie  Sun, May 18, 2003 8:59:19am

#7 - mommydoc - What seems to be escalating is my hatred for these people (to give them the dubious benefit of the doubt). I guess the more I read (and you're right, there seems to be a lot more sh-t flying) the more enraged I get.
This can't be healthy.
It's time for the Israelis to take "affirmative action." I simply can't believe that Bush - after all his pronouncements on terrorism - is condoning all this. My feeling is that he's touched on getting rid on terrorism then he's backed off. There are many terrorist butchers around right now and they should simply be eliminated - not arrested and kept in a nice friendly, warm environment.

I guess I would make a lousy diplomat.

23 Photios  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:03:40am

Despite what I wrote above, in a communique dated 15May03 HonestReporting.com reports NY Times Ignores Palestinian Terror.

Granted, before the latest attacks, but after their scandal.

The New York Times, all the "news" that's fit to print.

Faster please.

24 Caton  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:04:57am

#19 Wild Justice

Of course, modern technology offers better options today.

25 Keelie  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:05:29am

(On a rant) I also believe that the fundamental strategy of avoiding collateral damage is totally unreal... and of course it's what terrorists use to protect themselves.

These people are just too comfortable nested in their little enclaves because they know that it's unlikely anyone will bomb the area to kill them.

This is of course the problem the Israelis have. One "big one" and perhaps that will all change, much as I hate to say it.

26 Black Flag  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:11:03am

-horrifying for her and her family.

The story should read like this:
"Outside, we could hear the men storming about. Desperately, I slammed home a 75 round drum into my Soviet made AKM-74 and made meat-paste of the asshole when he kicked open my door.

But alas, life does not always go as it should. The scum are alive and kicking.

I ask, for those that may know, why are the citizens in that area not armed? I am in the US and a strong believer in my 2nd amendment rights...my wife and I actually went to the range yesterday and had some "practice". I couldnt see a situation like the one in that sad womans story happening at my home.

27 Wild Justice  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:11:13am

Caton,

The EZE Bloodless Castrator applies a latex ring/band around the scrotum and pulls the ring/band tight, cutting off the blood supply. An aluminum clip secures the ring. A built-in knife cuts the ring/band and you are ready to re-load for next animal. The scrotum should fall off in 20-40 days. Works best on calves 350 lbs. and up. A tetanus toxoid injection should be given at time of castration. Tetanus toxoid (Covexin 8, Bar Vac CD-T, Vision C & D Tetanus Toxoid or Ovine Tetanus Shield) should be administered when bands are applied.

Those injections are kinda pricey.

28 Mitch Polka  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:15:38am

On Hate.

A heady beverage. I've been imbibing more & more frequently, lately.

Problem is that secular & religious scholars have, since time immemorial, warned of its pernicious effects on those who drink it.

Years ago, we adopted a kitten. He became a much loved member of the family, especially to my 9 year old son.
One day, Moose.... that was his name.... began acting more & more strangely. Eventually, it happened. He viciously attacked the little boy who loved him best of all. I knew what needed to be done & told my boy what I was about to do. He begged with heartbreaking sincerity that it wasn't Moose's fault, he hadn't realy meant to do it, wouldn't I please give him another chance...

I loved that cat, too.
I killed it.

I don't really know if that memory applies in any way, here & now. Seems to.

29 Caton  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:18:33am

#27 Wild Justice

Well... forget it, then. Back to the old, proven methods.

30 Wild Justice  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:22:40am

Caton,

Nah, let's go with The EZE Bloodless Castrator and skip the tetanus toxoid injection.

31 Wild Justice  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:27:42am

Mitch Polka,

There's nothing wrong with justifiable rage and hatred. And anyone who tells you otherwise is an asshole. Excuse the language.

32 Caton  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:28:17am

#30 Wild Justice

But... What if Cowgirl Carries gets tetanos? No, really, if she uses it, she needs the injection.

33 Caton  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:32:11am

#31 Wild Justice

There is something wrong with hatred, no matter how justified it is. Trust me on this. It's a lot better to kill in cold blood. Hatred is an all-consuming passion that leaves no space for any other feeling.

34 Wild Justice  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:35:15am

Caton,

I thought the tetanus injection was for the bull ... or for the bullshitter, in Cowgirl Carrie's ex-friend's case.

35 Wild Justice  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:39:33am
It's a lot better to kill in cold blood.

Agreed.

But what do you feel when you're sitting at home with your smothered child in your lap, your husband's dead body on the beach, and your little girl's brain matter splattered on the rocks?

36 Caton  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:41:04am

#34 Wild Justice

Oh! In that case, who cares? Let's skip the injection. Carrie, be careful where you put your finger, though.

37 veebee  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:41:59am

#15 Susan, #18 Caton --
I think LGF should nominate Abu Mazen for Nobel peace prize. For real. Because if anybody can nominate anyone, why not do it just to make a point?

38 Caton  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:43:03am

#35 Wild Justice

Well, when my first wife was killed, I joined the army. And after 25 years, the hatred is still there, still burning, still eating from the inside. Definitely not a healthy feeling.

39 Darleen  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:44:29am

never.forget.

40 Wild Justice  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:48:21am

Oh my God. I am so sorry. I don't know what else to say.

41 Caton  Sun, May 18, 2003 9:52:57am

#40 Wild Justice

Bah. We tracked those who killed her. As horrible as it sounds, I enjoyed killing them. Too bad I couldn't kill them more than once.

42 Wild Justice  Sun, May 18, 2003 10:00:05am

Caton,

Wow. I'm stunned.

(BTW, "Revenge is a kind of wild justice." -- Francis Bacon. That's where my handle comes from.)

43 Caton  Sun, May 18, 2003 10:08:45am

#42 Wild Justice

It wasn't even revenge, it was a military operation two years later. Oh well, I needed the training anyway.

44 Wild Justice  Sun, May 18, 2003 10:22:36am

Caton,

I'm stepping out for a few hours. Good chatting with you and God bless. I look forward to meeting you in Israel one day.

45 AmericaninUK  Sun, May 18, 2003 10:38:04am

I remember hearing about this when it happened. How can one forget?

Tell me again about the roadmap...

46 mommydoc  Sun, May 18, 2003 11:46:01am

Caton: I am so sorry for your loss. I'm sure it never goes away.

47 Sajah  Sun, May 18, 2003 12:18:56pm

#2 CBA it is funny what stays with you. I remember the little girl's head being smashed. I do not remember that Abu Abbas had anything to do with this--so here is another reason to rejoice at his capture. He is a devil.

48 cba  Sun, May 18, 2003 12:42:32pm

Sajah, I'm not sure why it was that detail. I think it was the horrifying thought of being forced to cause the death of one's own child. I was about to get married, so maybe I was thinking about becoming a mother myself (although that didn't happen until 1983). Or perhaps it was the awful "Sophie's Choice" overtones. It still sickens me.

49 Mitch Polka  Sun, May 18, 2003 2:29:23pm

#35 Wild Justice
You sit home & grieve. If it helps, hate,
But, the tracker/hunters can't waste time & energy on emotional gratification. Their job is not to "feel"; It's to find & kill murderers.
That requires cold focus.

#38 Caton
I dare not offer my condolences; it would seem intrusive.
I hope you understand.

My Groups | jerusalemdiaries Main Page

Thanks to Harvey Tannenbaum of Efrat for the following details of
yesterday's terror victims:

Yesterday she celebrated 3 years since she made aliyah from
Kazakhstan. Nella Prov, 55, was a proud grandmother of two children
and a mother to two children. Nella had dreamed in Kazakhstan of
having a sabra grandson born in Jerusalem. Nella had prayed that one
day she would live in Jerusalem. In 2000, Nella packed her bags and
made aliya. People told her that she was crazy to leave the quiet of
Kazakhstan for the terror of Israel.

Nella was a regular on the first bus no. 6 out of Pisgat Zev so she
would always be on time for work in Jerusalem. Nella's daughter,
Ola, began to call her mother's cellphone, which she had just gotten
as a gift from her children. The phone rang but nobody answered.

As Nella's family began to search the hospitals, the representative at
Hadassah said to try Abu Kabir, as they were still identifying bodies
in pieces. As Ola and her sibling drove to Abu Kabir Forensic
Institute, they were the first to go inside. Their mother's head was
lying near her body and the children confirmed in screams that their
mother, the dreamer from Kaskastan was dead from terror, on the 3rd
anniversary of her aliyah to Jerusalem. Tonight, Nella is to be
buried in Jerusalem's Har Menuchot cemetery.

-------------------------------------
Yitzchak Moyeal, was 62, and a postal worker. He too left his Pisgat
Zeev community on that first bus no. 6 to the post office. Yitzchak's
son, Sharon was an Egged bus driver on a different line. Yitzchak
had 6 children and 12 grandchildren and together with his wife of 40
years, was active in their shul and in their local yeshiva in Pisgat
Zev.

Sharon and his siblings were 'invited' to the Forensic institute. As
Sharon, the oldest son, entered the room, he saw his father in death.

Yitzchak's body was intact and the children, grandchildren, and family
will bury Yitzchak tonight at Har Menuchot.

-------------------------------------------
Shimon Otinski, 68, was a lecturer, an immigrant from Kiev to his
promised land. Shimon was sitting next to his friend Yitzchak with
whom he prayed and played. Shimon was the father of two children and
the grandfather of two boys. Shimon had left Kiev 10 years ago for a
better life where he could 'practice' his Judaism. Today, this Jew
will be buried in Jerusalem where the practice of kaddish recitation
will once again be said for the olim from Russia.
-------------------------------------------------- ------
Olga Brener, 52, Marina Zachshivili, 44, and Roni Yisraeli, 34 are the
other 3 dead Jews. Their personal stories will be released later
tonight.

Today, there are funerals every hour in Har Menuchot. The first one
just ended--it was the burial of 98 year old Rav Michel Feinstein,
Z"L, the 1st cousin of Rav Moshe Feinstein, Z"L. As 25,000 Jews
accompany this Gadol BaTorah from Bene Beraq, the traffic is backed up
in Jerusalem.

The traffic jams are funeral processions from yesterday in the burial
of Dina Levy, 37, from Hebron, being buried with her unborn fetus,
then the above 6 of the 7 dead Jews from Jerusalem's bus terror.

----------------------
One injured soldier on the bus was the son of a soldier, who 20 years
ago was injured in another bus terror attack .

One injured soldier on the bus was bending down to his knapsack to
take out his Mishnayos to learn. He escaped death as the fireball of
the bomb missed his head as he was searching for his knapsack below
him.
-----------------------

Ronny Yisraeli, 34, was a man who climbed the corporate ladder. Ronny
was a clerk in the Supersol and after several years was promoted to
manager of the night shift at the Har Nof Supersol. Ronny had moved
his wife, 8 year old daughter, and 2 1/2 year old daughter from Ma'ale
Adumim to a larger apartment in Pisgat Zeev.

Every morning, Ronny would take the first bus to the bus station and
then transfer to a bus to Har Nof to open the Supersol market there.
Three months ago, Ronny was informed that on May 19, 03, he would be
promoted from assistant manager to manager of the Supersol market in
Har Nof.

"Abba won't be home tonight, the 8 year old explained today to her 2
1/2 year old sister," in front of TV cameras visiting the house. The
8 year old had already drawn a new 'label' to stick onto the front
door with only her mother's name as she knew that Abba was dead.
Ronny was murdered today on bus no. 6 as it was his last day as
assistant manager at the Supersol in Har Nof. Ronny had missed death
on the 20 bus in Kiryat Yovel, 6 months ago, as he ran to catch the
ill-fated bus, but 'missed' the connection in November 02.

Today, Ronny Yisraeli, will be buried in Har Menuchot, not too far
from the Supersol of Har Nof.
-------------------------------------------------- -----
Olga Brenner, 52, immigrated from Moldavia, 6 years ago. Olga and
her daughter, Svetlana, 27, were together on today's bus. The mother
and daughter had different jobs in the cleaning company at two
different addresses. Olga and her husband and children loved every
day of their new lives in Israel since 1997. The mother and daughter
would travel together to and from work each day from Pisgat Zeev.

Today Olga's head was blown off by the terrorist's bomb, as her
daughter Svetlana watched in the bus, only to be injured and not die
with her mother. Olga is being buried tomorrow, as the doctors try
to figure out a way for Svetlana to be brought in an ambulance in an
ICU unit to answer kaddish as her father will recite tomorrow for his
wife, her mother, Olga Brenner.

Lizzy,

My thoughts are with you and your family.

Caton,

When we meet in Israel one day, all the Arak you can drink is on me.

Mitch Polka,

Thanks for your comments. Never having been a soldier like you or Caton, I have never been in a situation requiring the cold-blooded professionalism you guys possess. I speak merely as a desperately hurting, desperately wounded, heart-sick civilian. God bless you, and thank you for your service. The respect I have for you guys knows no bounds.

52 Caton  Sun, May 18, 2003 6:41:08pm

#49 Mitch Polka

Thank you for understanding that.

53 mommydoc  Sun, May 18, 2003 10:02:21pm

lizzy: thank you for their stories. I never knew them , will never know them, and yet the tears won't stop coming.

I didn't think I could cry anymore, I have been so angry. Thank you for reconnecting me with my humanity.

And be safe and well.

54 zulubaby  Mon, May 19, 2003 11:30:52am

This is by far one of the worst things I've read. It was painful to read, I can't imagine what this woman has been through. Her courage humbles me.

55 Debbie  Mon, May 19, 2003 3:39:08pm

I felt punched in the gut reading this, especially that she had accidentally smothered her own child. I was also deeply moved (and horrified) when she mentioned how she was reminded of her mother hiding during the Holocaust.

This is also reminiscent of the Holocaust

This article is very recent. Samir Kuntar is a hero in Lebanon. He is celebrated and praised and political and religious leaders demand his immediate release from Israeli prison.
