A Shrine in Kiryat Menachem
On Thursday, November 21, 2002, a Palestinian named Nael Abu Hilail boarded the Number 20 bus in Jerusalem, and at about 7:10 am detonated the explosive belt he was wearing, as the bus was stopped in the Kiryat Menachem neighborhood.
The bus was crowded with children on their way to school.
Eleven people were killed immediately, ripped to pieces by the horrific explosion. 48 were injured, some of them very seriously.
Nael Abu Hilail’s father was proud of his son’s crime; after the mass murder he said on Palestinian TV: “Our religion says we are proud of him until the day of resurrection. This is a challenge to the Zionist enemies.”
The people of Kiryat Menachem have not forgotten the lives, and the families, and the worlds that were destroyed that day. LGF reader Lizzy sent us photos of the bus stop where this Arab atrocity took place; the neighborhood has made it into a shrine.
Never forget.

I taught art to the neighbourhood kids here for 4 years, and my girls went to kindergarten here. My ex husband still lives here, while I live one neighbourhood over, about three blocks away. I think about 19 people died in this attack, mostly kids. I knew four of them. I taught them in my art classes. The little 8 year old boy was my neighbour, and a week younger than my Iris.
I walk past this bus stop every day. The pain for these poor people never ever lessens.
