Suicide Bomber Attacks Iraqis

I don’t blog about every suicide bombing attack that happens in Iraq, because the news is already saturated with these events; my time is better spent finding the less well-covered items, I think.

But the atrocity perpetrated today against Iraqis lined up to apply for work is certainly one of the most vicious acts yet, aimed solely at Iraqi Muslims: Suicide Bomber Kills 50 at Police Station in Iraq.

ISKANDARIYA, Iraq (Reuters) - A massive car bomb killed about 50 people at a police station south of Baghdad on Tuesday as civilians lined up to apply for jobs, in one of the deadliest attacks on Iraqis working with U.S. occupation forces.

The bombing, which wounded at least 75 others, came after U.S. officials said an Islamic militant with links to Osama bin Laden’s al Qaeda network was plotting to ignite a civil war in Iraq to undermine efforts to hand over power to Iraqis.

“There are around 50 martyrs, 30 of whom have been identified, and dozens wounded,” Dr Tahsin Ahmad told Reuters at the hospital in Iskandariya, 25 miles south of Baghdad.

Interesting terminology from Dr. Ahmad, who seems to be trying to delegitimize the murderous actions of the Iraqi mujahideen by portraying the victims as martyrs. (I would have also asked him his opinion about the bomber, however. Just checking.)

I’d prefer that the whole martyrdom excuse be dropped. It’s a dangerous delusion no matter who uses it.
