 RetweetVenezuelan Epithets

Sun, Feb 29, 2004 at 6:16:26 pm PST

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, trying like crazy to get noticed, today called President Bush (avert your eyes, sensitive readers) an “asshole.” I don’t know if that’s the smartest thing to say, Hugo.

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called President Bush an “asshole” on Sunday for meddling, and vowed never to quit office like his Haitian counterpart as troops battled with opposition protesters demanding a recall referendum against him.

Chavez, who often says the U.S. is backing opposition efforts to topple his leftist government, accused Bush of heeding advice from “imperialist” aides to support a brief 2002 coup against him.

“He was an asshole to believe them,” Chavez roared at a huge rally of supporters in Caracas.

How much encouragement would it take to get President Bush to send a Delta Force Team down there to oust him permanently?

Chavez is just trying to look tough to bolster his own position and keep his LLL fan club worldwide stoked and impressed with him.

Thing is though, if you are a wanna-be strongman dictator in Latin America, it would probably be a good idea to NOT go out of your way to spit on the United States, the big kid on the block. Chavez is going to quickly go the way of Allende if he can't at least keep his mouth shut. Thing is, it won't be a CIA sniper that gets rid of Chavez. His own people will do it, with just a little nudging from us.

And before any leftist trolls get their dander up about Venezuela, give me one shred of evidence the U.S. had any involvement in the attempted coup in 2002, before you come on here raving about "evil American imperialism." I have yet to see any.

Oscar Watch
Let's see it's half over, and there have been 6 digs at Bush, and the latest was Errol Morris winning the Michael Moore Oscar for Documentary films, stated that while millions died in Vietnam (Fact checker for the documentarian, pleeze!) then launched into how we are now going into a hole (just like Vietnam). Interestingly, the camera panned the audience - many of whom sat with arms folded...
maybe they were just acting...

Thanks for the link! I would like to think western media would give some attention to Venezuela, but Chavez is a champion in their eyes. Hope all the best and will pass on your link to those I know.

From your link:

After five years of highly divisive rhetoric, President Chavez has managed to fracture the country into two highly emotional sides, and has gone out of his way to teach his supporters to hate his opponents. Today, his explosive strategy of class resentment, calculated division and endlessly escalating provocation has left Venezuela on the edge of a civil war.

The tactics sound awfully familiar. I wonder if Kerry has been taking notes?

63 Occasional Reader  Mon, Mar 1, 2004 6:21:33am

I'd urge any Spanish-speaking LGFers to try to catch a Chavez speech on television some time. The man comes across as completely demented.

As to the translation of "asshole", according to this article in the Venezuelan daily "El Universal", the choice word in question was, indeed, "pendejo". But not only Bush draw 'da wrath of Hugo. Referring to talk of the Organization of American States sending a mission to intermediate, he's also quoted as saying:

"Aquí no vendrá la OEA ni nadie (...) ¡Bastantes cojones hay aquí para defender a la patria de cualquier extranjero que pretenda humillarla, carajo!"

"Neither the OAS nor anyone else will be coming here! We have more than enough balls here to defend the fatherland against any foreigner who tries to humiliate it, goddammit!"

Quite the statesman.

A "pendejo" is a flaccid penis, a "good-for-nothing" a "can't get-it-up.

Lit. "pendulous"

In practice, It's an all-purpose insult.

68 Martel-Sobieski  Mon, Mar 1, 2004 7:05:44am

I for one have been utterly dismayed that this issue hasn't gotten WAY more attention. I guess its just that like in most things, everything comes to South America 10 years later than the rest of the world, including Cuban subversion, which in this case comes 30 years behind the times.

The tinhorn Chavez is blatantly trying to "Cubanize" Venezuela. He has improrted thousands of Cuban "Doctors" and "Educators", effectively re-nationalized the country's oil company PDVSA along "socialist" lines. He has organized commie style "block committees," he has characteristically appropriated (and forever tarnished) the name of the Great Liberator Simon Bolivar for his ridiculous "Bolivarian Revolution" which is nothing more that the same old Cuban/Che Guevara Bullshit in a new bag.

Venezuela, and especially Caracas is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, the Venezuelans are some of the most talented, industrious, educated and truly decent, fun-loving people on the planet, and they deserve much better than Hugo Chavez and his obsolete class-warfare comunism.

It is to thier credit that the Venezuelans have not yet turned to armed rebellion. Venezuela has one of the longest traditions of democratic rule in South America.

However, if (I should say WHEN) Chavez makes the predictably stupid mistake of invalidating the referendum against him this year, we will see Venezuela explode.

The question is whether or not the Venezuelan military will shoot thier own people. After 6 years of leftist class-hatred brainwashing from Chavez, it's an open question.

Saludos a todos los Venezolanos que aprecian la Libertad. Que no pierden la fé. Que tienen muchos amigos por todo el Mundo que estan siguiendo la situación, y que te apoyan.

Viva Venezuela Libre
Viva Cuba Libre

Muerte a Socialismo !

69 Gordon  Mon, Mar 1, 2004 7:08:08am

#68 Martin-Sobieski: Chavez is an inept, would-be dictator, who is hostile to U.S. interests.

That being said, what are we doing promoting and trumpeting democracy around the world, and then supporting a coup against an elected leader in Venezuela?

Hypocrisy, thy name is GW Bush.

70 Gordon  Mon, Mar 1, 2004 7:11:58am

There is an old story about how a Bolivian general, after overthrowing the previous government, promptly committed outrages against the British consul and the few British interests within Bolivia (they had supported his predecessor).

Queen Victoria was apprised of the situation. She consulted her globe, and noted that Bolivia had no seaports which the British navy could bombard in retaliation. She then took a pen, marked an "X" through Bolivia, and stated, "then Bolivia no longer exists."

Maybe we should consider doing the same thing, at least rhetorically, for rulers like Hugo Chavez.

72 Martel-Sobieski  Mon, Mar 1, 2004 7:18:58am

#69 Gordon

You are ass-backwards as ususal.

I'll bet you think that Fidel Castro and Saddam Hussien were "elected" Presidents because they won 99% of the vote in thier last "referendum."

I'll bet you think that Salvador Allende was an "innocent victim" and that he wouldn't have led Chile to utter poverty and desolation just like Cuba.

Hitler himself was "elected" before he siezed dictatorial power you dumbass.

As for "supporting a coup" When did the U.S. Government ever endorse anything other than respect for constitutional measures in Venezuela? The U.S. neither supported nor (officially) encouraged the coup against Chavez, and could easily have prevented him from coming back if it had been our intention to do so.

Now, I personally believe that it would have been the right thing to do, and would have prevented the bloody debacle which is about to explode over there.

Instead they sent inept, leftist crusading, Castro-Kissing, embarrassing failure of a President and all-around loser Jiminy Carter over there to preside over the referendum.

Only the severely logic-impaired LLL could equate that with "GW Hypocrisy"

Get your facts straight (oops, I forgot, LLL's are factophobes)

76 Jonathan  Mon, Mar 1, 2004 9:25:49am

Just got off the phone with my suegra (mother-in-law) in Caracas. She is staying right now in "La Florida" a neighborhood in Caracas proper, and reports that they are stocking up on areparina, arroz and other staples, since the situation is really getting out of control. The other day when we were on the phone we could hear the gunfire and pot-clanging (anyone who knows Venezuela will know what I am talking about, it's when people open their windows and start banging together pots and pans to create as loud a noise as possible) clearly on the other end.

Chavez's embrace of Khatami and Mugabe is right on par with his previous expressions of culo-licking love for Saddam & Fidel. He has done more to foster terrorism on this side of the Atlantic than anyone in the past few years. Just look at the presence of Hizbollah and other cells on Margarita Island. The only thing that he hasn't seemed to embrace yet is anti-semitism, but with a small yet well-off Jewish population the handwriting is on the wall.

The fact that the media here is more interested in Haiti than Venezuela is mind-boggling. Let's face it, Haiti's story is tragic, but it's not nearly a direct threat to the U.S. economy like what is going on in Venezuela. Just remember that next time you are paying $3.50/gal for gasoline this summer.

As for the American media: they are either ignorant dupes or willing collaborators who see Hugo as the "voice of the Venezuelan downtrodden masses" fighting against corruption and injustice. Not to mention they (the mainstream media) are probably saying the same things about GWB on a daily basis.

77 Jonathan  Mon, Mar 1, 2004 9:27:33am

The definitive word on the definition of "pendejo" (this from the Diccionario de la Lengua Española of the Real Academia, the Spanish-speaking world's equivalent of the O.E.D.): The literal definition is, indeed, "pubic hair". The colloquial definitions vary from country to country, but generally are either asshole/jerk, coward, fool, or (in Peru) someone who is crafty but unprincipled.

#79 papijoe: Here's what you do--adopt your best haughty Castilian accent, tell your wife, "pero coño! Qué barbaridad!", and then direct her here. Haughty Castilian liguists will then inform her (after a word search) that the non-colloquial definition of "pendejo" is, and I quote:

1. m. Pelo que nace en el pubis y en las ingles.
81 RG  Mon, Mar 1, 2004 11:19:19am

DAMN IT,

[etc.]

Did you actually read what I wrote, huevón? Nobody disagreed that the colloquial meaning is "asshole". Yeah, so papijoe others and I had a discussion about the LITERAL meaning of the word--what the fuck is it to you, joputa? Y me dices a mí "pendejo"? Si no tienes la capacidad mental de seguir el argumento y participar en este foro, perfecto, me importa un pedo, en todo caso dicen que eso es el resultado de tener padres que son primos hermanos, así que no te culpo para nada.

In Houston area Mexican slang, I've heard a word pronounced "way" (maybe spelled "hue", if I had to guess) used in such a way as to suggest it probably means a-hole or d!ck.

From what I understand it means that the subject of the epithet's wife or girlfriend is unfaithful. i.e. he's a cuckold(sp). The person that one's wife is unfaithful with is called a Sancho, which isn't really a pejorative.

Chavez is the best thing to happen to the New World since Dr Martin Luther King took a stand against the imperialist greed and inherent racism of the US, and Castro prevailed in the Bay of Pigs fiasco. Haiti is just a bitter response by a bunch of dumbass yank imperialists upset by their inability to get rid of the man of the millenium (so far).

Chavez called Bush a 'pendejo' which in the context said can be interpreted to mean 'asshole'. Pendejo is a pubic hair from that area. It also means idiot or moronic. It depends how it's used. The Venezuela crisis is extremely complex and is being under-reported in the U.S. media. Venezuela is today governed by thugs and criminals and the opposition is made up mostly of decent people who have no chance at removing this 21st century dictator from office.  Frank says:

The essence of Christianity is told us in the Garden of Eden history. The fruit that was forbidden was on the tree of knowledge. The subtext is, All the suffering you have is because you wanted to find out what was going on. You could be in the Garden of Eden if you had just kept your mouth shut and hadn't asked any questions. -- Playboy Interview, April 1993
