So how come the protests were directed at the American Embassies? And on 9/11, no less?

In my personal experience, there are a significant number of Muslims (especially from overseas) who don’t think there’s really any daylight between the U.S. and Israel. This means that believing 9/11 to be a joint false flag operation designed to make Muslims look bad isn’t a stretch for said people.

Note that I’m not saying it wasn’t contrived, I’m simply saying that it being contrived wouldn’t rule out the presence of other motives, especially when those things can be used for cover as they were in the beginning.
