A good find at Verum Serum: Barack Obama and former Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers apparently worked in the same office building for three years.

Tech Note: Accelerando

Unlike the last one, here’s a tech note about something you will notice.

Today we were trying to figure out why LGF was responding very slowly, even though traffic was not especially high. At first we suspected the new installation of Mint, but Mint is not the culprit.

Digging around the web server with the top and ps commands, we discovered multiple instances of a process called ‘cpdavd’ running, using obscene amounts of processor time. Googling ‘cpdavd’ told me that this was the WebDAV background daemon, an extension that lets server administrators edit files remotely.

Well, we don’t use WebDAV and never have. It was enabled as part of the default virtual server settings when the LGF server was first provisioned. There’s no telling why it suddenly started spawning so many processes, but they had been running for about two weeks, wasting CPU cycles like crazy. So…

We killed all the cpdavd background processes, and used our Web Host Manager control panel to disable launching it. And watched as the server load instantly dropped from about 20 to about … 2.

That’s a huge difference, and it should be very obvious to all LGF visitors as the pages load much more quickly. So there’s our tech success story of the day.

AP’s Puff Piece on Louis Farrakhan

US News • Sat Oct 18, 2008 at 11:33 am PDT • Views: 250

Here’s a very sympathetic article from the Associated Press about one of the most hateful figures on the American scene: Farrakhan says ‘new beginning’ for Nation of Islam.

CHICAGO – The Nation of Islam, a secretive movement generally closed to outsiders, has planned a rare open-to-the public event at its Chicago-based headquarters in what the Minister Louis Farrakhan deemed a “new beginning” for the group.

Hundreds of religious leaders of different faiths have been invited to the event planned for Sunday, a rededication of the group’s historic Mosque Maryam on the city’s South Side. Farrakhan is scheduled to speak.

“We have restored Mosque Maryam completely, and we will dedicate it to the universal message of Islam, and the universal aspect of the teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad,” Farrakhan said in an invitation letter. “It represents for the Nation of Islam, a new beginning.” …

“It is a very conscious effort to open the mosque up to the community and to rededicate the community to learning about Islam,” said Aminah McCloud, a professor of Islamic studies at DePaul University. “Previously, the Nation has been open to people coming to visit it, but its members don’t generally go anywhere else … now there is a concerted effort.”

Here’s how AP writer Sophia Tareen describes Farrakhan’s notoriously virulent antisemitism:

In February, Farrakhan appeared at an annual Saviours’ Day event in Chicago and called Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama the “hope of the entire world” that the U.S. will change for the better. The Obama campaign quickly denounced Farrakhan’s support, because of past comments about Jews that many have called offensive.

Interesting how the Associated Press presumes to speak for the Obama campaign.

Iowahawk: I Am Joe

The Hawk gets serious: I Am Joe.

I hope you will join me in expressing a simple bit of solidarity with this guy, Spartacus style. I AM JOE. I am a Wal Mart schlub in flyover country who changes my own oil and unclogs drains without a license. I smoke and drink beer and toss the football in the front yard with my kid, and I figure I can fend my way without handouts from some Magic Messiah’s candy bags. Most everyone in my family and most everyone I grew up with is another Joe, and if you screw with them, you screw with me.

Are you a Joe? Say it proud. Leave it on every goddamn newspaper comment section and online forum. Let these pressroom and online thugs know you won’t stay silent when they try to destroy the life of a private citizen for speaking his mind — because for every one of them, there are a million Joe Wurzelbachers. And for that we should all be thankful.
