I first began investigating creationist school vouchers as my part of my fight against creationism in my home state of Louisiana. Over the past few months, I’ve learned creationist vouchers aren’t just a Louisiana problem—they’re an American problem. School vouchers are, as James Gill recently wrote in the New Orleans Times-Picayune, ‘the answer to a creationist’s prayer.’

Liberty Christian School, in Anderson, Indiana, has field trips to the Creation Museum and students learn from the creationist A Beka curriculum. Kingsway Christian School, in Avon, Indiana, also has Creation Museum field trips. Mansfield Christian School, in Ohio, teaches science through the creationist Answers in Genesis website, run by the founder of the Creation Museum. The school’s Philosophy of Science page says, “the literal view of creation is foundational to a Biblical World View.” All three of these schools, and more than 300 schools like them, are receiving taxpayer money.

So far, I have documented 310 schools, in nine states and the District of Columbia that are teaching creationism, and receiving tens of millions of dollars in public money through school voucher programs.

There is no doubt that there are hundreds more creationist voucher schools that have yet to be identified. The more than 300 schools I have already found are those that have publicly stated on their websites that they teach creationism or use creationist curricula.

Leave it to Rush Limbaugh to come up with the sickest, weirdest right wing take on the gun control debate.

CALLER: …on any given day in Americans [sic], more than 3,000 children are killed from abortion and we have no problems with that. We’re OK with that. It’s not an issue.

So you can’t spend 40 years of telling people and telling children that if I make a mistake, if something comes up and this child I don’t want is in the way of my future and in the way of me graduating high school, is in the way of me going to college, is [in] the way of me being happy, is in the way of whatever I want out of life, that it’s OK for me to kill the baby, but later on when I become a disgruntled employee, when I become an unhappy student at school because children are bullying me, that I want to eliminate them and get them out of the way? It’s the same concept.

LIMBAUGH: Well, it’s a good point. You know how to stop abortion? Require that each one occur with a gun.

This is me, just shaking my head.

Limbaugh was on a hate roll today; he also referred to the children at Obama’s news conference on gun violence as “human shields.”

The National Rifle Association is in full-fledged attack mode today, with another video advertisement whining about media criticism and calling President Obama a “hypocrite” for sending his daughters to a school with armed guards.

There’s no mystery about who they’re appealing to with ads like this: the lunatic right wing base. The ad is packed with far right memes. And notice how they never use the words “President Obama” — that’s not an accident. They’re making a conscious appeal to the wingnuts who don’t believe Obama’s presidency is legitimate.

The NRA’s new advertisement is a blatant appeal to the looniest segment of the right wing, to those cretins who seem to believe President Obama’s children deserve no special protection just because their father is President of the US.

And when they were criticized for this disgusting ad, their response was:

NRA spox: “Whoever thinks the ad is about Pres. Obama’s daughters are missing the point completely or they’re trying to change the subject.”

The NRA will continue to focus on keeping our children safe and securing our schools, fixing our broken mental health system, and prosecuting violent criminals to the fullest extent of the law. We look forward to working with Congress on a bi-partisan basis to find real solutions to protecting America’s most valuable asset - our children.

Attacking firearms and ignoring children is not a solution to the crisis we face as a nation. Only honest, law-abiding gun owners will be affected and our children will remain vulnerable to the inevitability of more tragedy.
