Venezuela’s Maduro Rescinds Order Expelling CNN, Asks Obama to Negotiate

Huge demonstration in Caracas, Venezuela, Feb. 22, 2014

I’m not really sure why President Maduro thinks having his officials negotiate with President Obama is going to solve his problems with his own people.

CARACAS, Venezuela — Massive demonstrations by opponents and supporters of President Nicolas Maduro were underway Saturday in central Caracas as the official death toll rose to eight on the 10th day of civil unrest roiling Venezuela.

Leading the opposition demonstration in eastern Caracas was Liliana Tintori, wife of Leopoldo Lopez, the former Caracas borough mayor who was arrested last week and charged with inciting violence that by official count has also led 137 injuries. Lopez and other opposition leaders say armed pro-government vigilantes have been responsible for the deaths.

News media on Saturday reported two more deaths Friday night in Caracas. And in a surprise announcement at a late night news conference Friday, President Nicolas Maduro called on President Obama to enter into negotiations with Venezuelan officials to settle differences. He also rescinded a previous order expelling CNN news crews from Venezuela.

A Great YouTube Find: Keith Jarrett’s European Quartet Live at NDR Jazz Workshop

Some of the greatest piano quartet music ever made

Wow, what a find on YouTube — a complete, high quality live performance of Keith Jarrett’s “European quartet” with Jan Garbarek (sax), Palle Danielsson (double bass), and Jon Christensen (drums), recorded in Hannover, Germany in 1974. I’ve seen pieces of this, but never the whole thing.

This is Keith in a pretty experimental phase, but not to the point of cacophony like some other free jazz experiments of the time. The intricacy of Jarrett’s compositions is counter-balanced by a shifting, sliding sense of time and phrasing that was one of this band’s unique signatures.

Extraordinary Events in Ukraine: Government Collapses, Yanukovych Flees

Regime change
World • Views: 14,692

Here’s the New York Times report: Ukraine’s Leader Flees Palace as Protesters Widen Control.

KIEV, Ukraine — Abandoned by his own guards and reviled across the Ukrainian capital but still determined to recover his shredded authority, President Viktor F. Yanukovych fled Kiev on Saturday to denounce what he called a violent coup, as his official residence, his vast, colonnaded office complex and other once impregnable centers of power fell without a fight to throngs of joyous citizens stunned by their triumph.

As President Yanukovych’s nemesis, former Prime Minister Yulia V. Tymoshenko, was released from a penitentiary hospital, Parliament found the president unable to fulfill his duties and exercised its constitutional powers to set an election for May 25 to select his replacement. But with both President Yanukovych and his Russian patrons speaking of a “coup” carried out by “bandits” and “hooligans,” it was far from clear that the day’s lightning-quick events were the last act in a struggle that has not just convulsed Ukraine but expanded into an East-West confrontation reminiscent of the Cold War.

 Frank says:

I was writing all kinds of positive and negative canons and weird inverted this and retrograde that and getting as spaced-out mathematically as I could and I was going "Wait a minute (laughs), who cares about that stuff?" I had always liked rhythm and blues so here I was stuck between the slide rule and the gut bucket somewhere and I decided that I would opt for a third road someplace in between. -- From an 1972 interview to Martin Perlich. On giving up writing serial music.
