I went to two Whole Foods markets in the last hour to check this out. The largest store had a huge display of olive oil. It did not have Canaan oil. But it did have Halutza brand, which is made in Israel. The shelf space was one bottle wide.

The other store had a much smaller display. They had Canaan but not Halutza. The Canaan shelf space was also one bottle wide.

Here's a shot of the Canaan oil. I noticed the word Palestine before I saw Canaan.

re: #1 HelloDare

Thanks for doing that research!

I just went over to the Whole Foods web site to look for more information. Turns out they have a whole "Forums" section where anyone can post. Most of the forums are about recipe trading and stuff, but the "Food Politics" one is absolutely plastered with whiny "boycott Whole Foods!" threads posted by pissed-off Obamabots. My favorite title is "Goodbye Whole Foods, Hello Local Markets Not Run By Right Wing Extremists."

Anyway, here is something: the Whole Foods Blog's piece on Dr. Bronner's soap, from last December. It seems fairly tame. I would like to find some online communication in which Whole Foods acknowledges and responds to the fact that Canaan Fair Trade supports scholarships to a university that Hamas describes as a "greenhouse for martyrs."

I just came back from my local Whole Foods. I can confirm that Debbie Schlussel is at least partly wrong (should we be surprised?) My Whole Foods does sell Israeli Halutza olive oil, and it does not sell the "Palestinian" Caanan olive oil.

They do have a large selection of Dr. Bronner's soaps, which use the Caanan oil. Here is Dr. Bronner's discussion of their use of "olive oil from the holy land."
