Why call it "sexual assault" if it was, in fact, rape? So which was it? In any case, it is disgusting.

Rape is a sexual assault, obviously.
But legally its used to mean very specific sexual assaults, and it can have different meanings state to state.

The issue is that they don't wish to enumerate the various kinds of sexual assault. Horrendous will cover it, in any case.

There's no possibility of a rape shield law to preserve her anonymity, so this is sort of a way of protecting the victim as well.(my best guess) Thats why CBS issued such a short statement and said there wouldn't be another.

The truth about rape is that no woman is immune from it, ever. It's every woman's nightmare because it can happen to any woman and the chances are high. 1 in 4 I believe. I wouldn't get on a plane if there was a 1 in 4 chance that it would crash.

In far too many minds, all over the world, a female human is little more than an outlet or repository for male wishes or power ... Rape is regularly and consistently used as a weapon of war. Rape is regularly and consistently used as a method of control.

But rape is also just regular and consistent. Men rape for no reason other than that they think they can get away with it — all the time, every day.

So, this being the case, why should CBS send a woman to a place where the rule of law has been nullified. i.e. Egypt during these times of turmoil and lawlessness?

Quite. The appropriate response naturally isn't to condemn rape, but to blame the victim for leaving her house.

Ice, like.. derp! Hurr hurr.

She probably should not come back to the US, there's gang rapes here too. Just showing that concern.

I condemn rape. I am asking you what is the appropriate conclusion from the paragraph I quoted. If " Men rape for no reason other than that they think they can get away with it — all the time, every day." what responsibility does CBS have sending a woman to a place where the rule of law has broken down and men can get away with rape. I'm not blaming the victim, I'm asking what responsibility her employer has for the assignments it gives her.

13 Kronocide  Wed, Feb 16, 2011 11:53:52am

You make the conclusion.

14 What, me worry?  Wed, Feb 16, 2011 12:32:39pm

Maybe in her own frenzy, Echidne of the Snakes, got a little hyperbolic.

Human culture is not responsible for rape. Men who rape are responsible for rape. And not all men rape. I think she was trying to say that, but in her anger (totally justified, btw) didn't make that real clear.

Also rape is far more prevalent in countries where women have no or few rights. Yes, we have rape in the U.S., but it's much worse in countries where women are still getting stoned for adultery. Where woman have no choices in who they marry and no way to divorce. They live in abusive situations their entire lives with no way out.

Egypt is more moderate than most of the Arab world, and who knows who these men were. Maybe some of the prisoners who were let out? But I have to tell you that Arab men treated us much differently than Jewish men in Israel, the most democratic of all the Middle East. We got groped in the Arab markets, so much so that we stopped shopping there without a male escort.

It was a wild crowd that day in Egypt, but you can't compare these folks to Americans. If such a thing happened to a reporter here, then we can discuss that and I don't recall that ever happening. Not to a reporter or a woman in a professional situation.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that human culture stops rape. In the U.S. as in all western countries where woman have their rights, rape is diminished.

Perhaps what's going wrong semantically somewhere is that "human culture" is being conflated with "human nature." A culture can either bring out the worst in human nature, or the best (note that "culture" does not necessarily equal organized religion or government - Somalia has a culture too, of lawless, chaotic anarchy and all the lovely things it brings).

YES, exactly.

Echidne might be one of these people who think all human culture has to be a rape culture. I don't think so though.

Women are raped every minute of every day in every country and in every imaginable situation—at home, at work, in the street, in parking lots after buying groceries; during wars, revolutions, celebrations... Curtailing a woman's movements will not prevent it.

21 BARACK THE VOTE  Wed, Feb 16, 2011 1:19:38pm

Why must the onus of preventing rape always fall to the potential victims? and not the legal system, court system, and -- duh-- the rapists?

True. I think publicityStunted said it very well! The culture brings about the nature. So very true!
