Another amazing story of a rescue from the Victorian bushfires - thanks to Google Earth and a helicopter..
A SON desperate to save his stricken mother and stepfather used a private helicopter and Google Earth to help them flee the inferno.
As fire engulfed their Steels Creek retreat, Sean Evans’ mother Rachana rang her son in a last-ditched plea for help.
What followed was a high-flying rescue straight out of Hollywood.
Surrounded by a wall of fire, a charter helicopter pilot swooped down to rescue Rachana, her husband Daricha and a 29-year-old Dutch backpacker from the Greenwood Lane property.
From his home at South Yarra, Mr Evans contacted a charter company boss at Moorabbin who used internet satellite mapping to lock in the Steels Creek farm.
The information was relayed to the pilot hovering above the firestorm.
“I directed him over the phone until he got an image of mum’s farm,” Mr Evans said.
“I then described a spot where (the pilot) could land the chopper and he emailed me an image with a drop pin where I had described.
“They plucked them from the gates of hell and delivered them safely to my door step.”
