Man Arrested And Fired After Aiding Robbery Victim
Sometimes a good intention produces a bad result. :
DECATUR, AL - A would-be Good Samaritan who intervened in a robbery Wednesday night is now out of a job and facing criminal charges. John Cagle was arrested after he fired five shots at a robber who was pointing his gun at Cagle. None of the shots hit the robber, but one of them nearly hit a man on the next street over.
It all started Wednesday night just before 6 p.m. at the Merita Bread store in Decatur. A robber wearing a ski-mask barged into the store and held up the cashier at gunpoint. Cagle was working across the street at the Express Oil store when he noticed the robbery in progress. Witnesses say he ran across the street with his gun, and when the suspect saw him coming he fled outside. The cashier tells Newschannel 19 that the robber then turned and pointed his gun at Cagle, who responded by firing the shots. One of the errant shots busted out a window of a house behind the store, landing just six feet from the homeowner. Decatur police arrested Cagle at the scene and charged him with one count of reckless endangerment and one count of unlawfully discharging a weapon within city limits. Express Oil fired Cagle the next day. The robber escaped and remains at large.
