The incredibly embarrassing Audacity of Dope

I’m wondering if his Special Olympics comment wasn’t a gaffe, but maybe he was telling the truth and it was a cry for help.

is this turn around due to her “principles”? Or complaints from angry constituents. No contest.

I have a friend who voted for Obama specifically because he thought Barack would help repair the image of America abroad. It was becoming harder and harder for me to refrain from calling my friend and saying “I told you so.” Now I don’t have to. It goes without saying.

How many people in the White House knew about this letter? Must have been a lot. Who is advising him? Are they all nuts?

Sarcozy is “conservative” (for a French leader).

He’s personna non-grata in Barack’s world.

There’s very little information about this available, even in the French article from Le Figaro. I think it’s clear that Obama knows who the current president of France is, and knows that he wrote this letter to the former president, not the current one. If the story is true, then he simply wanted to express his camaraderie and willingness to work with Chirac, a major world political figure who shares Obama’s outlook on international relations: he hates Israel, has a deep fascination with and sympathy for radical Islamic extremism, and he harbors strong anti-American leanings. It may or may not have been a harsh snub of Sarkozy. If Obama has been blowing off Sarkozy in the past as the blog post suggests, then it was indeed a serious insult. If not, then it’s just a warm and friendly overture that seeks to establish a relationship in addition to, not instead of, one with France’s current president. Sort of like if Bashir Assad wrote a nice note to Jimmy Carter, thanking him for all the good work he does in the Middle East.

As an afterthought, look at this: Obama met Gorbachev in run-up to Medvedev talks. I guess talking to former world leaders is part of his strategy.

In any case, no matter what the motive, it pissed off Sarkozy. What good does that do?

It lets France know that, like Britian, they are simply 1 out of 190 other nations in the world.

I wish this surprised me, but it is de rigeur for the left: Always treat the left in other countries as though they are the only “legitimate” political force and conversely treat governments of the center-right as though they are pretenders.

It is about as anti-democratic as you can get.

So finally it turns out that there’s probably no story here.

Chirac, no longer able to direct the resources of a large European country toward helping genocidal terrorists, now runs some kind of foundation that does charitable work around the world. Chirac wrote a letter to Obama in that capacity, and Obama wrote back saying that he looks forward to working with him. He knows who the current president of France is, he didn’t mean to offend Sarkozy, and no offense was taken.

Imagine if Sarkozy sent a letter to Gov. Palin hoping that they could work together in the future to assure that both governments would have the same shared anti-terrorist, anti-appeasement vision.

Think the feces would hit the rotating oscillator on several levels?
