Hitchens in a shrieking, hate-crazed, anti-Jewish diatribe

Recent reports of atrocities committed by Israeli soldiers in the course of the intervention in Gaza have described the incitement of conscripts and reservists by military rabbis who characterized the battle as a holy war for the expulsion of non-Jews from Jewish land. The secular Israeli academic Dany Zamir, who first brought the testimony of shocked Israeli soldiers to light, has been quoted as if the influence of such extremist clerical teachings was something new. This is not the case.

Hitch’s diatribe is all based on Danny Zamir’s false report to Haaretz and The Guardian. Now that it has been proven bogus, Hitch’s argument falls apart.

I don’t think Hitchen’s rant should be classified as an “argument” — it’s the usual diatribe. It was that “Dr’s Plot” column he wrote a while back which (imo) did Hitchens in, as far as I’m concerned. Hitchens repeated blood libels spread by notorious Hate Sites, and to think that Hitchens was just “too dumb” to realize who he was using as a “source” (?) — I don’t buy it — I suspect he knew very well who his sources were, yet chose to fan the flames of antisemitism anyway. (all too typical for those coming from the UK)…

Another thing, btw, when Hitchens took off on his rant about Dr. Baruch Goldstein, along with his blood libels, the column’s title was “The Doctor’s Plot” — I don’t know who decided to give his column this title (?) — but for Russian antisemites, that title has resonances…

The “Dr’s Plot” title is an example of to clever by half semi-erudite reference that would get a rise out of bright undergraduates. Several threads back people were falling over themselves to praise Hitchens for slapping down the offensive rapper. He is a man of wide learning but poor judgement who often acts on his emotions rather than on analysis or consideration for others.

Because he’s a devout atheist who rails against all religions equally.Hitchens is a well spoken version of a Jew hater who claims, “I don’t hate Jews, just Israel” or “I don’t hate Israel, only Jews.” Take your pick, same old same old, imho.

While you might disagree with this column, it would behoove you to read the whole thing, Zamir was only used as an intro. The main substance of the article was Rabbi Derlich and how his entreatment to commit genocide was not punished as such. Hitchens also provided an argument on how such a genocide is supported by the Jewish scriptures (Book of Numbers?). Hitchens used this to support his thesis that the Israeli army is being infiltrated by orthodox Jews which are forming a sub-population within the army which is beholden to the orthodox rabbis and suggests that they might not follow orders from secular leaders in the future.

If you merely react to the first paragraph, and not the substance of his argument, it doesn’t reflect well on your credibility. This isn’t a diatribe, this is a reasoned argument whose predictions might be exaggerated. But there is a basis for it and therefore it surmounts the threshold to become more than just “anti-Israeli/Jewish” shilling.
