Tales from the Fever Swamp: The Strange History of John G. Schmitz
One of the few people ever expelled from the John Birch Society for “extremism,” Schmitz was an activist and politician who served in the US House and the California State Senate and ran for president on the American Party ticket in 1972.
During a hearing on abortion, he referred to his critics as “bulldykes” in writing, and stated that they had “hard, Jewish, and arguably female faces.” Feminist lawyer Gloria Allred sued him for this and won.
He was noted for his opposition to sex education, yet he admitted to fathering two illegitimate children in an extra-marital affair that occurred at the height of is career.
One other thing: He was the father of notorious screwball and child molester Mary K. LeTourneau.
