‘American’ flouts state law
WORTHINGTON — An Iowa man arrested Tuesday told authorities he does not need a driver’s license because he is an American, not a U.S. citizen.
Michael Duane Strain, 52, of Lime Springs, Iowa, presented an officer with apostille papers concerning Posse Comitatus, a group that believes there is no legitimate form of government above that of the county level.
The officer had stopped to speak with Strain at approximately 10 p.m. because his pickup had stalled at Oxford Street and Diagonal Road and was blocking traffic. The pickup was towing a horse trailer with eight horses inside.
After Strain identified himself, he told the officer he needed a tow truck to get the pickup started. He said he was taking the horses to Oregon, then handed the officer the apostille papers.
After speaking with dispatch, the officer learned Strain had two outstanding warrants for his arrest from Filmore and Olmsted counties.
While being transported to the law enforcement center, Strain told the officer he was “sove
