Disgusting.

…they felt liberated from what they experienced as the intrusive, commodifying, basely sexualizing Western gaze. … When I wear my headscarf or chador, people relate to me as an individual, not an object; I feel respected.

The whole idea of the burqa is to prevent sexual temptation from the man. It creates and promotes the idea that the only cause for the “sinful” erotic excitement a man might experience in the presence of a woman is the woman herself - she is the source of that “evil”. Proof: If she hides herself inside a black tent then the “evil” “sinful” urge doesn’t emerge (usually). So the woman is the direct cause for the “sinful” sensations and the following “sinful” act, rather than the man’s own nature, instinct and sexuality. If she doesn’t cover herself then whatever happens is her fault because she is the source of sin and the threatening embodiment of dark evil magical temptation the man just can’t resist. The man’s libido is denied and projected onto her. She’s the scapegoat for his “sins”.

And if she’s such a powerful lure that might enslave the man to his “lower” “animal” “sinful” instincts and urges then he might feel he’s in an inferior position to hers - he’s not in control, she has power over him, and that power must be subjugated and suppressed so he could be in control.

I don’t think very highly on “spirituality” in general, but still I think that spirituality is introspective and that to be spiritual you have to turn inward and know yourself. And meet the challenges with your own effort to rise above and transcend. That certainly doesn’t mean absolving yourself by projecting your own weaknesses and “sinful” nature on someone or something else and then keeping that something out of your sight so you won’t be tempted. It also doesn’t mean controlling someone for which you have a weakness. It means controlling yourself. It means recognizing your own weakness, vulnerability to temptation, instinct and urges, your own “base” desires - owning them, recognizing them as your own and not pinning them on someone or something outside, taking responsibility for them and then trying to rise above your so-called “lower nature”.

In this particular case a man that achieved a “higher spiritual degree” will be able to sit in bed with a naked model and still relate to her as an individual and be interested in what she has to say. A man like that is really free. A man who needs women to hide themselves so he won’t have to confront his own “sinful” sexuality and who needs to control them in order to control himself or avoid awareness to his own weakness is on the opposite end - he’s the lowest on the scale of spirituality, there’s nothing spiritual about it. And most definitely nothing feminist.
