Obama Rules Out Large Reductions in Afghanistan
But Democrats are calling on reductions, and they’re clearly resisting any additional troops to Afghanistan, even as they blame the Bush Administration for missing the opportunity to go after the Taliban in Afghanistan with more troops by focusing on Iraq instead.
It’s a curious position; now that Iraq is stabilizing and US forces are being transferred out of that theater of operation, the Democrats hold that more troops (which weren’t supposedly available because of Iraq) aren’t going to make a difference in Afghanistan. They want a cut and run strategy to be decided upon, and 98 have signed a House bill calling for an exit strategy.
Obama, for his part, says he wont agree to large reductions; but he also doesn’t say he wont engage in reductions of any size, and he also doesn’t say that he will add troops, which is what his generals say will improve matters.
