Child obesity, and the only way to stop it
I have no issue with Michelle Obama taking on childhood obesity. The problem is that they are calling for action on the food industry.
The heart of the problem is the people who provide food to a child, namely, the parents. No 4 year old is obese on their own. My daughter was telling me of a friend whose mother nags her to lose weight, then fills the house with fattening, sugary snacks. (Full disclosure: I’m not up for sainthood on this one myself. We just brought my son back down to a 12 regular from husky-sized pants, mostly by providing healthier snacks and cutting out his morning double-hot chocolate with extra whipped cream.)
Parents need to learn to cook, and cook healthy. Parents need to limit computer/video game time. No government program will reach into your home and do this for you.
Aim the program at the parents, not the industry. Healthy snacks and foods abound already, they just need to find their way into homes.
