Today in Nutbars: Thomas Sowell
Although it’s only Tuesday we have 2 contenders for wingnut of the week: Jon Voight’s demented rant (no link) and Thomas Sowell. Yesterday in IBD:
Is U.S. Now On Slippery Slope To Tyranny?
With a title like that, you know where we’re going, don’t you?
When Adolf Hitler was building up the Nazi movement in the 1920s….
Godwin right out of the gate!
In our times, American democracy is being dismantled, piece by piece, before our very eyes by the current administration in Washington, and few people seem to be concerned about it.
What? I guess I bought this Lego Democracy kit for nothing.
The real people ‘dismantling democracy’ would be the plethora of GOP types seeking to overturn the Constitution, of course.
Just where in the Constitution of the United States does it say that a president has the authority to extract vast sums of money from a private enterprise and distribute it as he sees fit to whomever he deems worthy of compensation? Nowhere.
It also doesn’t say anything about what’s on TV tonight. OUTRAGE!
And yet that is precisely what is happening with a $20 billion fund to be provided by BP to compensate people harmed by their oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.[…]If our laws and our institutions determine that BP ought to pay $20 billion — or $50 billion or $100 billion — then so be it. But the Constitution says that private property is not to be confiscated by the government without “due process of law.”
Holy shit! Obama confiscated that money? Here I thought he merely asked for it!
Technically, it has not been confiscated by Barack Obama, but that is a distinction without a difference.
And there you have it. Wingnuts make stuff up. It’s what they do.
After this we have a page babbling about FDR and the gold standard (!), then we go back to Nazi Germany for another extended Godwin moment.
I can’t be bothered to go through the rest of it here because it’s too damn early in the day to start drinking. You’re on your own.
