I’m glad you posted this; I thought it was a good Krugman column, and especially for the way he debunks various myths about unemployment.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved where he rips on the heartless and the clueless as you quoted, but there’s also a lot of useful info in there for those who might genuinely not understand the issue (and despite the heartless and the clueless, I do tend to think that most ordinary people who don’t get it are simply misinformed rather than evil. I hope?)

Isn’t the issue that we have two branches of Congress with supermajorities—and they didn’t pass the bill? They can phone their votes in. They don’t have to compromise with anyone. They don’t have to listen to anyone, and they know this.

And I don’t think the Republicans have enough mind to spare some extra thought juice and exercise mind control on the Democrats.

Who are they?
The Dems?
Without Byrd and with Nelson there is not 60 votes…and if you think the Democrats have not bent over backwards to compromise the Republicans then you have not been paying attention.
It has become just a silly game.
The Dems have a bill that needs to pass, the R’s say “sure, but first we need you to do XYZ and then we will vote for it”…
Dems are all “OK we did XYZ, so now we vote and it passes, yeah?”…
Next thing ya know the R’s are yelling “whoa there little buddy we never said we would really, really vote for the bill, but we will if you also do ABC” and it goes on and on and on and each time I hear how it is all the Dems fault because they just won’t fucking compromise enough.
